It was the last in a line of long, rainy days.I had n't seen the sun come out for more
than a few moments for the better part of the week. Being a light lover, this had left me
feeling tired, rundown, and a bit bad tempered. Even though I d on't usually pray about
such things, I wished for just a bit of sunshine to brighten my day, warm my heart, and
uplift my spirits.
I stopped by a local store to grab a bottle of vitamins. The line at the check-out
counter was four deep but I didn't mind.At least it was bright and dry inside the store.I
chatted for a few minutes with a middle-aged lady in front of me with a basket full of
diapers(尿布) .I didn'task if she had a new baby a t he r age or was helping out a daughter
or son with theirs, but her tired face looked like it had seen a few sleepless nights
recently.
When it was her turn, she slowly pulled out some worn bills to pay for the diapers.
She counted carefully and emptied out her wallet but was still about seventy cents short.I
quickly grabbed my own wallet and threw a one-dollar bill on top of hers. She turned her
head and blessed me with a bright, beautiful, shining smile. She thanked me over and
over again and I just smiled back and said:“You're welcome.”
After she had left and I'd paid for my vitamins, I walked outside. It had started to
rain again but I didn't mind.I had wanted a bit of sunshine and that was what I'd gotten in
her smile.I felt energized, full of love, and ready to enjoy the day.I also realized that the

⊙
In recent years there has been a lot of talk about the urgency and importance of
preserving our environment.Pollution and careless exploitation are certainly reducing the
ecosystems'chances of natural recovery. However, globalization has brought with it
strong cultural pressures that threaten to remove ancient cultures.
Those cultures are as important and valuable as our environment. The different ways
in which human beings have established relationships with the natural and social
environment require our attention and are worthy of being cared for and preserved.
The cultural and historical heritage that we have allows us to understand ourselves
better..But it is not just a matter of privileging(给予特权)the local and rejecting the
foreign.Understanding and enjoying our historical and cultural baggage will also allow us
to better adapt to foreign cultural influences, making them enrich us instead of simply
copying them without adding value.
Culture includes the way we express ourselves, language, the way we see and
respond to things, our beliefs, our knowledge about our natural and social environment,
our diets, tastes, and customs.Giving up would leave us losing an important part of our
value as individuals.
More than protecting our cultural characteristics, the ideal is to enhance them, and
to make them stronger in the face of external factors. This, again, does not mean that we
should abandon different cultural influences, for we can do so without losing our culture.
In short, just as it is important to preserve our cultural heritage,it is equally
important to promote it.This will allow us to understand where we are in the world, and
how we can contribute to enriching world culture and economy in the age of globalization.
8.How does the author organize Paragraph 1?
A.By listing numbers.
B.By giving examples.
C.By making a definition.
D.By making a comparison.
9.What does the underlined word "baggage"in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Luggage.
B.Belief.
C.Symbol.
D.Difference.
10.What should we do properly with our cultural characteristics?
A.Repeat them.
B.Rebuild them
C.Rid them of foreign cultures.
D.Protect and strengthen them.

11.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.Ways of preserving our cultural heritage.
B.Reasons of protecting our cultural heritage.
C.Information of dealing with globalization.
D.Significance of promoting our cultural heritage.
D
Natural World Heritage sites provide crucial habitats for many rare species,as well
as protect rare ecological processes and excellent landscapes. They also contribute to
economy,climate stability and human well-being.
Two-thirds of natural sites on the World Heritage List are crucial sources of water,
and about half help prevent natural disasters such as floods or landslides.Over 90%of
listed natural sites create jobs and provide income from tourism and recreation.Forests
found in World Heritage sites across the tropical()regions store an estimated 5.7
billion tons of carbon.
Natural World Heritage sites have high international visibility and provide insight
into conservation successes and challenges.Through the World Heritage Convention, they
have the power to mobilise (action where it is most needed, and often pioneer
management solutions which contribute to sustainable development. The success of the
conservation of World Heritage can act as a test of the effectiveness of protected areas
globally, and of our ability to protect nature overall.
Many natural World Heritage sites demonstrate that conservation works when efforts
are sustained. For instance,Comoe National Park in Cote d'lvoire came off the List of
World Heritage in Danger in 2017 thanks to international support and joint action on the
ground, which resulted in species populations rising, including chimpanzees and elephants
that were thought to have disappeared from the park.
To protect the world's natural World Heritage sites from growing threats, investing
in their protection and management is key. This is a collective responsibility shared by
governments,civil society,local communities and people.
The state of conservation of natural World Heritage sites needs to be closely
monitored to identify the most threatened sites, and this is where national and
international conservation efforts should focus first.World Heritage sites,as the planet's
most significant protected areas, deserve the best quality management if they are to have a
positive outlook.
12.Why does the author mention those numbers in Paragraph 2?
A.To show the significance of the World Heritage sites.
B.To tell the current situation of the World Heritage List.
C.To change people's views about natural sites.
D.To compare natural sites and tropical regions.

B.Our ability to protect nature overall needs much effort.

14.What's the focus of efforts on Natural World Heritage sites?

techniques used by drama to keep readers engaged.
Developing characters.Creating memorable characters is essential to crafting a

Creating dialogue.Creating effective dialogue is crucial in writing engaging stories as
it can reveal important information about characters and drive the plot forward. To
achieve this, writers should aim for natural-sounding dialogue, which flows smoothly,
avoiding overly complex language.18
Building tension and conflict.Conflict is essential to creating drama.19
Meaningful relationships and conflicts are crucial to driving the plot forward and building
a sense of drama and urgency that keeps readers engaged.
20 Setting, sound, and imagery play an integral()role in creating an

The Robinsons lived in Florida with their twin daughters-Patricia,who was mute
(哑的)yet generous,and Isabel,who was as vain(自负的)as a peacock.Isabel was a
spoilt child who ordered her parents to give her everything they could afford. On the other
hand,Patricia was happy with what she had.Isabel had a passion for singing. She even
had a music band,Prophecy Queens,which included a few of Isabel's friends.They all
had heart-warming voices and played wonderful tunes using instruments.Whenever
Patricia wanted to listen to the Prophecy Queens playing, her twin would laugh at her by
saying,"You are an embarrassment in front of my friends! They sing beautifully, and as
for you-you can't even speak!"To this,Patricia would disappointedly go to her
bedroom. She knew that crying or complaining would be of no use.Even though Isabel
looked down upon Patricia, she would not dream of thinking negatively about Isabel.
One day,Isabel and her friends were practicing hard for their music band
performance, since they had a State Singing Competition which was going to take place
the next afternoon. The Prophecy Queens desperately wanted to win.It was their dream.
The next morning,surprisingly,Aunt Laura,from the neighbourhood,visited
them.Isabel felt annoyed, since Aunt Laura had only wanted to say good luck to her,
while bringing Patricia her favourite soup.In her mean little soul, she planned that she
would finish the soup before Patricia would even notice. So,she daringly went up to the
bowl and finished the soup in one go.After a while, she found her skin turning red.Isabel
started to panic.Would she be able to show her face during the performance? She felt
sorry for herself.
Isabel informed her family as soon as possible that the soup contained shrimps().
She was allergic to shrimps.Patricia realized that Isabel had drunk her soup and got sick.
In her heart of gold, she felt sorry for her twin and blamed herself for not drinking the
soup before her innocent sister drank it.
