It was my middle school's musical performance. It was opening night. The hall was
filled with families, friends, and teachers. Most of the school was there.
My friend John and I were asked to be stagehands-the only seventh graders in an
eighth grade production. We were stationed in front of the curtain on stairs that led to the
floor of the auditorium. We sat on the steps, racing onstage when the lights darkened
between scenes to position and get back props().
"Half a Sixpence"focuses on Arthur Kipps,a businessman's assistant acquiring a
fortune.Ann,his childhood love,faces competition from upper-class Helen.The
climactic scene takes place when Artie encounters Ann,played by Lisa.As the scene
opens, she stands at an ironing board, ironing.
The lights darkened prior to that scene.John and I rushed onstage with the props.
There was a problem."Guys!"Lisa whispered. She had the iron in one hand and was
supporting the ironing board with the other."It won't stay up!"We had seconds.John
and I made vain efforts to fix it.The lights were coming up.We had to go!
Poor Lisa was holding the ironing board and gamely pushing the iron back and forth.
In seconds, she would have to say,"Oh,Artie!"and cross the stage to where he stood.
Lowering the ironing board and stepping over it would be odd.Staying put and
yelling lines would be disturbingly odd.Instead,Lisa stayed in character and added a
brilliant bit of stage business, having had but a handful of heartbeats to decide.
"Oh,Artie!"she yelled. Then she simply let go.Ironing board and iron fell with a
crash that served to strengthen the emotion of the moment. It was comic. The audience
loved it.She'd saved herself, the performance, and two shaken seventh graders.
What's more disheartening than failing spectacularly in front of the whole school under a
spotlight? And what's more empowering than turning a disaster into clever improv(即兴表演)?
One of the rules of improv is "Play in the present and use the moment.Or,in
Lisa's case,"Use what you're given-even if it's broken.

Scientists have found cures for many types of diseases. However,a definite way to
fight cancer has proved difficult. That is because every person's cancer is based on their
particular genes.Dr.Catherine Wu and her team at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in
Boston,Massachusetts, aim to change that by developing common vaccines()to
fight each person's unique cancer.
Dr.Wu's research focuses on using the power of the body's immune system to fight
cancer cells. She got the idea after watching how a bone marrow transplant(骨髓移植)
helped patients reset their immune systems to fight the disease."There in front of my
eyes were people who were being cured of their leukemia because of the use of the immune
response,”she said.
The researcher wondered if vaccines created using an individual's cancer characteristics
could help their immune system to attack the diseased cells more effectively.
For their first study,Dr.Wu and her team chose six people suffering from advanced
melanoma,a type of skin cancer. The scientists began by analyzing each individual's
cancer characteristics. They then created personalized vaccines containing each patient's
unique proteins. The vaccines were designed to train the patients'immune systems to
recognize and kill cancer cells while sparing the healthy ones.
In 2015,all individuals were given a seven-shot course of their personalized vaccines.
By 2017,four patients showed no signs of cancer again. The tumors()did return for
the two patients with the most advanced cancer. But the growths disappeared after the
patients received four more doses of the customized vaccines.By 2021,all six patients
were declared cancer-free.
Though the sample size is small,Dr.Wu's research has proved that personalized
vaccines can effectively battle cancer. Her pioneering work has earned her many awards.
Most recently,in February 2024,she received the important Sjoberg Prize. The honor
carries a prize of $1 million-$100,000 as award money and $900,000 to fund future
cancer research.

If you reside near a coast or on an island, you're likely familiar with hurricanes or
typhoons. But did you know that hurricanes and typhoons are essentially the same
phenomenon? They are just named differently based on their location:hurricanes in the
North Atlantic and typhoons over the Northwest Pacific.Elsewhere, they're referred to as
tropical cyclones(热带气旋).
These destructive storms are classified on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale,
a system that helps people understand the possible severity of coming storms. It consists
of five hurricane categories, ranging from Category 1(74-95 mph winds)to Category 5
(157+mph winds)to warn residents. However, these categories only refer to wind
speeds and do not account for other factors such as excess rainfall, tidal surge(),or
any following storms.Unfortunately, these unmeasured factors, particularly storm surges
and flooding, often cause more deaths than high winds!
Scientists are considering introducing a Category 6 for hurricanes with winds exceeding 192
mph.So far,we have seen five hurricanes that qualify as Category 6.This idea is supported
by famous scientists such as Michael Werner at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory,
and James Kossin. They argue that expanding the category system helps better
communicate the potential danger and damage connected with powerful storms and that
leaving the category threshold(分类☒值)capped at Category5 is worrying because“it
tends to understate the risk"from climate change. They're using science to back their
claims, citing that rising temperatures provide extra energy to fuel hurricanes and
typhoons.
Critics, however, believe the focus on wind speed is insufficient. They suggest more
in-depth categories,rather than additional ones.Deirdre Byrne,a scientist,suggests
adding letter classifications to the Wind Scale to help warn residents of secondary storm
risks.
The debate on how best to classify and communicate the dangers of tropical cyclones
continues. Both parties are concerned about the impacts of these storms.Hopefully, they
will find a solution that reflects a balance between science and public safety!

Each year when the Scripps National Spelling Bee comes around,I always reflect on a
rather controversial fact-good spellers aren't always good writers, while terrible spellers
can be fantastic writers. In fact, some of our most renowned writers, including William
Faulkner,Ernest Hemingway,and F.Scott Fitzgerald,were reportedly not just bad
spellers, but really bad spellers.Fitzgerald's spelling was so consistently questionable that
literature fans are still debating the word "orgastic"at the end of The Great Gatsby.16
Was it a misspelling?
17 But spelling can't make a sentence crackle()or a headline pop-only
carefully chosen words can do that. And if those words are spelled incorrectly in the first
draft,or even the fifth draft,it doesn't really matter as long as corrections are made
before publication.
It's important to remember that the ability to spell well is not the same as the ability
to write well.Writing involves crafting sentences, paragraphs, and stories that engage
readers and convey ideas effectively.Good writing is about clarity, style, and creativity,
not just about spelling every word correctly.Even the best writers need to revise their
work multiple times.18
So if you're not a spelling bee champion, don't let that fact dissuade you from writing
that novel, business proposal, poem,or blog post.19 Many successful authors have
struggled with spelling throughout their careers but have still managed to produce
brilliant work.If you have a passion for writing, focus on developing your skills in
storytelling, argumentation, and expression. The mechanics of spelling can be learned
and improved over time, and there are plenty of tools available to assist you along
the way.

E.I don't deny the importance of spelling.

Max and Mia were thrill-seekers at heart.Their weekends were often spent climbing
cliffs,or exploring dark caves.
"You know, safety should always come first,"Max's father often reminded him.
"Adventure is exciting, but always remember to take care of yourself and each other."
Summer arrived, and Max and Mia decided to go on a camping trip, complete with a
planned rafting()adventure down a nearby river.They packed their tools,checked
the weather forecast, and prepared for a weekend of fun and exploration.
As they set up camp near the river, the sky was clear and the sun was shining.
However, the weather report predicted a sudden change, with thunderstorms expected
later in the day."We should start early,"Max suggested,"before the weather
turns bad..”
Mia agreed, and they loaded their raft with supplies and set off down the river. The
water was calm at first, and they enjoyed the peaceful surroundings, taking in the beauty
of nature around them.
"This is amazing!"Mia exclaimed, feeling the warm sun on her face."I love being
out here..”
Max smiled."Me too.Let's enjoy the calm while we can.
As they rowed further down the river, the rapids began to pick up speed.Suddenly,
a strong gust of wind caught the side of the raft, tipping it over.Max and Mia were
thrown into the rapid waters, struggling to keep their heads above the surface.
"Mia,grab onto the raft!"Max shouted,reaching out a hand.Mia swam towards the
raft, her arms waving wildly as she fought against the current."I'm trying,Max!I can't..."
Her words were cut off as a wave crashed over her head, pulling her under the surface.Max
acted quickly, swimming towards her and grabbing her arm."Hang on,Mia!I've got you!"He
pulled her towards the raft, and together they managed to climb back aboard.
Once they were both safely on the raft, they took a moment to catch their breath.
"That was close,"Mia said, shaking the water from her hair."I thought we were done
for.”“We're not out of the woods yet,”Max replied, surveying the river ahead.“We
need to stay focused.”
