Last year,as my then-9-year-old son,Leopold,and I were preparing for a mom-son
ski trip to Keystone,Colorado,I came up with a rule:We would say yes to everything.
You see,Leopold is a picky eater-he only eats chicken and yogurt-and can be hesitant
to try new things.
I was hoping to find a way to help him,so I borrowed the idea of a Yes Day,
something our family has done a handful of times since watching the movie of the same
name. Before the trip,Leopold and I agreed we would say yes to everything, including
food and experiences-especially new ones.
We started saying yes before we even boarded our flight, when we stopped at a breakfast
buffet at the airport. For me,that meant I sampled a vegan meatball, while Leopold tried
a mouse bite of hash browns(土豆饼)and he said it looked“funny'”.Neither of us went
back for seconds, but we each rated our respective new foods as "not bad".
The next day, after we got settled at our hotel,I took Leopold snowboarding on a
mountain. My hope was that Leopold would make the most of this opportunity. In the
beginning,I played it safely and stuck to the long and winding easy green run.Later,
thinking of Leopold, who had kept to our bargain and faced his fear of heights to learn
how to ride a chairlift,I challenged myself to ski an intermediate (blue run.
There was a part that was steeper()than I would have liked, but I did my slow,
careful S-turns and I made it down in one piece.Better than in one piece-I was proud of
myself for trying something new.
We had so much fun saying yes to everything and the experience was a delight as
Leopold and I braved it together. There lies the beauty of saying yes:It pushes you to go
out of your comfort zone.Cultivating a sense of adventure helps us live life to the fullest.
4.Why did the author ask Leopold to practice the Yes Day idea?
A.To improve his skiing skills.
B.To increase his physical fitness.
C.To visit as many places as possible.
D.To encourage him to try new things.

No sound is more universal than laughter. There are no language or cultural
barriers-everyone everywhere understands the concept-and there's no learning curve(
习曲线).“Babies don't need to have seen or heard laughter to know how to do it,”says
Sophie Scott, one of the world's leading experts on laughter. But why do we laugh?
According to scientific studies,it's not just jokes, funny photos or funny movies that
cause laughters.In fact,humor isn't even the main reason we laugh."Laughter is a
nonverbal emotional expression,"Scott explains."The emotion that we seem to be
expressing with it is joy,but it's a social joy that is primarily experienced with other
people..”
The community aspect of joy is vital to understand the reasons we laugh. While
people certainly can(and do)laugh when they are alone, they're much less likely to than
when they're around other people.According to a scientific paper published in Trends in
Cognitive Sciences, people are 30 times more likely to laugh if they are with someone else
than if they are alone.
But it's not something we do intentionally,at least not when it comes to the sort of
genuine laughter that comes out of us.What's more, there are times when we can't help
but laugh(and can't stop),such as if we're being tickled().
So what exactly is happening in the body when we laugh?Scott explains that laughter
is a physiological response. When we laugh, the brain releases endorphins, which relax
the whole body. Our facial muscles and breathing system are both involved in laughter.
In other words,we're hardwired for laughter.Everyone has the ability to laugh,
even blind babies who have never seen laughter and deaf babies who have never heard it.
Other mammals laugh too, including mice when they are tickled."It's likely that many
species of animals laugh and we just don't realize it because we don't know what their
laughter sounds like,Scott says.

The modern world is built on concrete. It holds together driveways, bridges and the
buildings in which more than 70 percent of the world's population makes their home. But
the material is also a climate killer. Its production is responsible for 8 percent of global
carbon dioxide release.
Solutions have been few and far between, but a California company named C-Crete
Technologies says it has developed America's first carbon-free and commercially available
ready-mix concrete.
Its trick is two fold. The first has to do with ingredients().The production of
traditional Portland cement-concrete's main ingredient-requires manufacturers to break
down limestone()into usable calcium oxide(CaO).That typically produces and
sends out carbon dioxide. What C-Crete Technologies does instead is to use naturally
occurring, plentiful rocks whose processing does not produce carbon dioxide. The second
step has to do with heat:C-Crete Technologies can manufacture its cement at room
temperature. That makes a huge difference, given that cement is typically produced at
2,600 degrees Fahrenheit, which requires a massive amount of energy. From then on,
it's just normal concrete chemistry.
C-Crete president Rouzbeh Savary has set his sights on expanding even more, and he
argued that widespread use of his concrete should be a "no-brainer"because it offers the
same strength as traditional concrete at a similar cost and without climate pollution. After
more than a decade of research and development,C-Crete's product has won millions of
dollars from the government plus several early customers.
能力调研检测
英语试题(五)·第4页(共8页)
Cost, however, might give other potential customers pause().The material price of
C-Crete concrete was less than 10 percent more expensive than Portland cement-based
concrete. Then, too, there is the issue of transportation.C-Crete Technologies has one
factory to make the stuff,so it's expensive to deliver the concrete to projects outside
northern California.
12.What is special about C-Crete Technologies'concrete?
A.It contains different ingredients.
B.It absorbs a huge amount of heat
C.It is produced at room temperature.
D.It is made from a special type of limestone.
13.What does the underlined word "no-brainer"in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Easy decision.
B.Stupid action.
C.Brave attempt.
D.Secure measure.
14.What does the last paragraph mainly focus on regarding C-Crete concrete?
A.Its commercial potential.
B.Its promising future.
C.Its present disadvantages.
D.Its limitation in sales region.
15.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Sustainable Solutions to Climate Change
B.California's Climate-Friendly Innovation
C.Pollution-free Cement:New Path to Modern Construction

Have you ever talked with a friend about a problem, only to realize that he just
doesn't seem to grasp why the issue is so important to you?Have you ever presented an
idea to a group,and it's met with complete confusion?What's going on here?16
Miscommunication is the failure to communicate properly or not being able to express
ideas or thoughts correctly. It is among many communication barriers. Here come some
ways to lower your risk of miscommunicating.
Get their attention.Having a person's attention means making sure they are listening
and understanding the words you say.17 If the other person is distracted or in the
middle of doing something else, either get their attention or try another time.If they
seem to be distracted by other things, ask for their attention by saying,"I need to make
sure you understand this'”or“I'd appreciate your full attention.”
Check your assumptions. You might assume that people understand what you're
saying or asking them to do.18 For example,if you're giving directions, explain what
the person might need to do as prep-work.You may over-or-under-estimate the amount of
knowledge or ability someone has,so it's best to ask.

Sarah and Lisa, two high school friends, decided to go clothing shopping on the spur
of the moment. They entered the store and immediately got excited by all the beautiful
clothes.
Sarah looked at Lisa and said,"We need to make some preparations for the formal
dance next month.Let's pick up some fancy dresses."Lisa nodded eagerly, and they
both started looking through the clothes.Suddenly,Sarah pulled out a bright yellow
dress and exclaimed,.“This is it!I'm going to wear this to the dance.”
Lisa looked at her doubtfully and said,"Are you sure? You'll look like a BANANA
in that."Sarah laughed and replied,"That's the point!I want to stand out."
They continued shopping and finally found the perfect dresses. As they were checking out,
Lisa said to Sarah,"You know,on second thought,I think I might also wear something
yellow. Why don't we be two bananas at the dance?"
When that day came, they received a lot of attention and compliments on their outfits
as they made their way through the crowd. Some people even came up to them and asked
where they got their dresses.
Sarah and Lisa felt proud of their choice to stand out,and it made them feel confident
and happy.Later in the evening, they overheard a group of people talking about them,
saying that they looked ridiculous in their bright yellow dresses. At first, the two girls
felt hurt, but then they felt that the group was just expressing their own insecurities
about standing out and being different.
"Hey.Don't worry about what people think.Just express your own individuality
through clothing choices, and don't worry about fitting in or pleasing others.declared
Sarah. As Sarah finished her empowering statement,Lisa nodded in agreement.Just
then,a girl named Jessica, known for her sharp tongue and popularity, approached them
with her friends."Wow,look at you two!Trying to be the center of attention, huh?"she
smirked(得意地笑).
