Mr. Honnold has long dreamed of climbing Taipei 101. The skyscraper got its name because it’s located in Taipei, Taiwan, and it has 101 floors. From 2004 until 2010, the building was the tallest building in the world. Now it’s the 11th tallest.
Mr. Honnold is the first person to climb the building without ropes.
Mr. Honnold had never climbed a building before. Climbing Taipei 101 is very different from climbing El Capitan. It’s made of glass and metal, not natural rock. And it’s in the middle of a city, surrounded by lots of people. Mr. Honnold usually climbs in quiet natural settings where he can concentrate.
Also, Mr. Honnold was being filmed. The streaming service Netflix was showing his climb on live TV.
Mr. Honnold made his climb along a corner of the building, starting at the bottom. He used the building’s metal structures to grab onto. At first, crowds could easily spot his red shirt, black pants, and yellow shoes. But as he kept climbing, he appeared smaller and smaller from the ground.
He stopped a few times to rest or wave, but kept climbing until he reached the top. When he finally got there – after about 91 minutes, he waved his arms to the people below. Many of those watching the climb began cheering.

(2026·河南省开封市高三一模)At 16, I thought I was ready for a big rock climb. My dad took me to a mountain one sunny day. He led the way up, placing safety equipment in the rock cracks. I followed, connected to him by a red rope. When we reached the top, I felt on top of the world — strong and fearless.
The challenge came when we had to rappel (绳降) down the other side. Looking down, I felt sick with fear. Our rope wasn’t long enough, so Dad had to use an old rope left by others. As I went over the edge, my heart pounded so hard against my rib cage (胸廓) that it hurt, and I wished I were back at the campsite roasting marshmallows (棉花糖) with my little sisters.
Halfway down, I was balancing on a small rock when my dad shouted a warning. A fist-sized stone hit my hand sharply. Pain shot through my arm. I was frozen, terrified that one wrong step would make me fall. I could only focus on the thin red rope tying me to my dad above.
When Dad reached me, I was cold, tired, and too scared to speak properly. After checking I wasn’t seriously hurt, he calmly showed me what to do. “Sit back in your safety belt. It will hold you,” he said, demonstrating by leaning back himself. Trusting him, I followed suit. My shaking leg finally calmed. Together, we rappelled the rest of the way down.
When my feet touched solid ground, my legs collapsed. In that moment of relief, I realized something important. It wasn’t just the climbing I loved, but the feeling of being someone adventurous and capable, and someone who could face fear with trust.
We had many more adventures after that. Each tested my limits and involved moments of fear. But I always trusted my dad to bring us home safe. Every experience, even the scary ones, became a treasured story.

(2026·安徽省部分学校联考)I’m Dalton Johnson. The first time I went rock climbing, it wasn’t love at first sight. My brother and his friend invited me to join them. While the day itself was fun — hanging out with my brother and experiencing something new — the climbing itself wasn’t particularly memorable. I remember thinking, “This would be really cool if it weren’t on a broken quarry (采石场) wall but out in the mountains.” At that point, I didn’t realize how deeply connected climbing and the mountains truly were.
My real introduction to climbing came later when I attended a National Outdoor Leadership School course. There, I learned the foundational skills of both sport and traditional climbing. Traditional climbing involves placing your own gear (装备) into the rock to protect against falls. It’s as adventurous as it sounds, and it instantly appealed to me. Armed with new knowledge and a passion for exploration, I bought my first climbing security gear.
This gear marked the beginning of a new chapter in my life. I hit the road, living out of my car and chasing rock climbing destinations across the western United States. I climbed famous routes in Yosemite, tested my limits on Joshua Tree’s flat rock walls, explored the Tetons, enjoyed the granite (花岗岩) of the High Sierra, and experienced hidden beautiful spots around Lake Tahoe. Every destination brought a deeper appreciation for the sport.
Rock climbing is more than a hobby — it’s become my identity. The mountains have turned into my playground, and climbing is my way of connecting with them. Each harder grade has fueled my addiction to the sport. Today, climbing is as central to my life as it was during those road trip days. I balance time between training in the gym and climbing outdoors. Life’s responsibilities can get in the way, but even a single day out on the rock leaves me smiling, laughing, and feeling grateful. I can’t imagine what my life would be like without climbing!
5.What can we know about the author’s first rock climbing?
A.He disliked the climbing setting. B.He remembered the details clearly.
C.He encountered danger halfway. D.He found the experience boring.
6.How did the author prepare for rock climbing?
A.By visiting destinations beforehand. B.By attending various online courses.
C.By purchasing safety equipment. D.By learning basic skills from his brother.
7.What did rock climbing experiences bring to the author?
A.Inner peace and like-minded friends. B.New challenges and amazing views.
C.Clear goals and wild imagination. D.Spiritual wisdom and keen focus.
8.Why does the author say rock climbing has become his identity?
A.He considers it fashionable. B.He treats it as a hobby.
C.He pursues it as a career. D.He finds it irreplaceable.

1.What was the author’s initial feeling while rappelling down?
A.Regretful and scared. B.Expectant and nervous.

【答案】5.A 6.C 7.B 8.D

根据第二段中“Armed with new knowledge and a passion for exploration, I bought my first climbing security gear.(带着新的知识和探索的热情,我买了我的第一个攀岩安全装备)”可知,作者通过购买安全装备来为攀岩做准备。故选C。
根据第三段中“I climbed famous routes in Yosemite, tested my limits on Joshua Tree’s flat rock walls, explored the Tetons, enjoyed the granite (花岗岩) of the High Sierra, and experienced hidden beautiful spots around Lake Tahoe. Every destination brought a deeper appreciation for the sport.(我攀登了优胜美地的著名路线,在约书亚树的平坦岩壁上测试了自己的极限,探索了提顿山脉,欣赏了内华达山脉的花岗岩,还体验了塔霍湖周围隐藏的美丽景点。每一个目的地都让我对这项运动有了更深的理解)”可知,攀岩经历给作者带来了新的挑战和令人惊叹的景色。故选B。
8.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Rock climbing is more than a hobby — it’s become my identity. The mountains have turned into my playground, and climbing is my way of connecting with them. Each harder grade has fueled my addiction to the sport. Today, climbing is as central to my life as it was during those road trip days.(攀岩不仅仅是一种爱好,它已经成为我的身份。山变成了我的游乐场,攀岩是我与它们联系的方式。每一次更难的攀登都让我对这项运动更加着迷。今天,攀岩在我的生活中就像在那些公路旅行中一样重要)”可知,作者认为攀岩已经成为他生活中不可替代的一部分,因此说攀岩已经成为他的身份。故选D。
