Jane Goodall, who died on October 1, 2025 at 91, devoted her life to the study of animal behavior and kept a charm, open-mindedness, optimism and wide-eyed wonder that are more typical of children.
In her pioneering studies in the big rainforest of Tanzania’s Gombe Stream Game Reserve, now a national park, Goodall famously recorded chimps (黑猩猩) taking long pieces of grass and inserting them into termite (白蚁) nests to “fish” for the insects to eat, something no one else had previously observed. It was the first time an animal had been seen using a tool, a discovery that changed how scientists differentiated between humanity and the rest of the animal kingdom.
Without formal training, she turned up in the famous anthropologist (人类学家) Louis Leakey’s office in Tanzania in 1957 as his secretary, but she soon was encouraged to study chimpanzees for her potential as a female. She has a completely open mind and deep insight into humans’ closest living relatives, something most scientists lost during their formal training. Later, when Goodall wrote up her observations of chimps using tools, Leakey wrote, “Now we must redefine (重新定义) tool, redefine Man, or accept chimpanzees as human.”
Goodall spoke of animals as having emotions and cultures, and in the case of chimps, communities that were almost tribal. She also named the chimps she observed, an unheard-of practice at the time, receiving laughing from scientists who had traditionally numbered their research subjects.
Goodall inspired and advised world leaders, celebrities, scientists and conservationists, also touching the lives of millions of children. Through the Jane Goodall Institute, which works to engage people around the world in conservation, she set up Roots Shoots, a global youth program that operates in more than 60 countries. The program teaches children about connections between people, animals and the environment, and ways to engage locally to help all three.
4. Why was Goodall’s discovery about chimps so important?
A. It found termites were chimps’ main food.
B. It changed how we define humans and animals.
C. It proved chimps could make tools like humans.
D. It first showed chimps eating termites with tools.
5. What helped Goodall succeed without formal training?
A. Her secretarial work for Dr. Leakey.
B. Living very close to the chimps in forests.
C. Her open mind and deep insight into animals.
D. Leakey’s belief that women researchers were better.
6. How was Goodall’s research method unusual?
A. She followed tradition by numbering chimps.
B. She filmed chimp behavior instead of writing.
C. She named chimps and saw them as emotional.
D. She studied individual chimps rather than groups.
7. Which words best describe Jane Goodall?
A. Creative and inspiring. B. Outgoing and influential.
C. Responsible and graceful. D. Determined and emotional.

As you walk into any supermarket today, you’re likely to find plant-based meat products like burgers and sausages. Made from plants such as soy and pea, these items are becoming increasingly common worldwide. In fact, the global market for these products is experiencing remarkable growth and is expected to reach $30 billion by 2025.
Supporters insist on several key benefits. They believe that it’s a healthier and more environmentally friendly choice to traditional meat. Nutritionally, plant-based meats are generally lower in saturated fat (饱和脂肪). Environmentally, they require significantly less land and water than traditional meat production. A 2024 study showed that plant-based burgers produce 90% fewer greenhouse gas compared to beef burgers.
Technological advances have played a key role in the rise of plant-based meat. Companies, like Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods, have created special processing methods to replicate the taste and texture and even the “juiciness” of real meat. Some companies even use a molecule called heme — found in both plants and animals — to achieve a meat-like flavor (香味). Interestingly, in blind taste tests, many consumers cannot tell between plant-based and animal-based burgers.
However, the industry faces great challenges. The higher price point remains a big barrier — plant-based options often cost twice as much as regular meat. Many consumers also express concerns about heavy processing and artificial additions. Some simply believe that real meat tastes better. Additionally, while more environmentally friendly than beef, producing plant-based meat still requires a great deal of energy and resources, particularly for highly processed products.
Looking ahead, experts predict prices will decrease as production technology improves. With more restaurants adding plant-based choices to their menus, consumer acceptance continues to grow. Although plant-based meat is unlikely to replace traditional meat entirely, it’s expected to become a hot choice alongside regular ones. For now, it’s clear that this is more than just a trend — it’s a growing part of the global food system.
8. What do we know about plant-based meat?
A. It’s a healthier choice with lower fat.
B. It’s the most popular food worldwide.
C. Its global market is growing very rapidly.
D. It solves environmental problems caused by farming.
9. What does the underlined word “replicate” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Copy. B. Remove. C. Simplify. D. Replace.
10. What is the expected future for plant-based meat?
A. It will soon go out of fashion.
B. It will remain a research product.
C. It will be a common food instead of meat.
D. It will replace traditional meat worldwide.
11. What will the author most likely discuss next?
A Different kinds of traditional meat.
B. Its short-term market performance.
C. Conditions for its future development.
D. Health risks of eating traditional meat.
D
Few natural cures offer as much pleasure and affordability as a good night’s sleep. However, achieving quality sleep often turns out hard to get. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that adults generally require 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night, yet many fall short. About 35% of adults don’t meet the minimum of seven hours. This percentage is even higher among people of color. Teens, who need more sleep than adults, are in a worse situation; nearly 70% don’t get the recommended eight hours nightly. Women especially suffer from sleeplessness, with up to 50% reporting that they lie awake at night, unable to sleep.
Not getting enough sleep is connected with lots of health risks, including diabetes, heart disease, overweight, depression, weakened immune (免疫的) function, and so on. Some effects gather together over time, and just one night of poor sleep can increase the risk of catching a cold. Sleeping little damages hormone (荷尔蒙) production: ghrelin — the hormone that signals a full stomach — is reduced, while leptin, the hunger-controlling hormone increases, possibly leading to an extra 500 calories per day. Yet, even if you want more sleep, achieving it may feel out of your control.
Fortunately, certain plants can aid sleep. Various plants can help us sleep better, particularly those that are nervine, which can calm or comfort the nervous system. As a trained chemist, I suggest starting new herbs slowly. Try them in the evening at home, either right before bed or a few times between dinner and bedtime, beginning with a low quantity and gradually increasing it.
When we mix sleep-promoting herbs with some other drugs together, like anti-anxiety medicine, sleeping pills, or some pain and allergy (过敏) medications, care is necessary. Over combinations may cause overbalance sedation, with serious side effects such as damaged motor skills, sleepiness during driving or machinery operation, heightened depression risk, and reduced heart or breath rate.
12. According to the text, which group is most likely to be short of sleep?
A. People in their teens. B. People aged 20-25.
C. People aged 40-65. D. People aged over 65.
13. Why can sleeping little lead to weight gain?
A. It reduces the heart rate. B. It makes you feel hungrier.
C. It raises the level of anxiety. D. It weakens immune function.
14. What could be the suggestion regarding using herbs for sleep?
A. To start with a high quantity for immediate effect.
B. To avoid combining them with any other drugs.
C. To regard them as completely safe and effective.
D. To be careful about mixing with certain medications.
15. What can be the suitable title for the passage?
A. Natural Herbs for Better Sleep. B. Reasons for Sleeping Problems.
C. Sleep Needs of Different Groups. D. Mixing Risks of Herbs and Drugs.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In the busy modern life, stress is unavoidable for most people. Too much stress, whether from work, study or relationships, harms physical and spiritual health. ____16____ Below are practical ways to answer it effectively.
____17____ When stressed, your breath often turns flat and rapid, worsening anxiety. Deep breathing, by increasing oxygen (氧气) intake, slows your heart rate and calms you down. You can practice it whenever and wherever you want — even a 2-minute break at work: find a quiet place, sit comfortably, and focus on breathing in and out.
Regular exercise is another powerful stress solution. ____18____ Even 30 minutes of physical activities daily can make a big difference in dealing with stress. Running, quick walking or yoga produces endorphins — “feel-good” hormones that lift your emotion. Besides, regular exercise improves sleep, which helps you deal with stress better.
Diet matters too for stress management. Caffeine in coffee, tea and energy drinks activates your nerves and increases anxiety. ____19____ Try herbal tea (花草茶), fresh fruit or whole grains (谷物) instead — they provide continual energy and support your body’s stress reaction.
Don’t bottle up stress or bad feelings. Talking to a trusted friend or doctor offers new views. If you prefer to hold your secrets, keeping a diary works well. ____20____ Writing down thoughts helps manage emotions, clear your mind and lighten stress.
A. Deep breathing is a simple yet effective stress solution.
B. Many people find relaxation skills helpful for managing stress.
C. But you can take active measures to keep its influence in check.

E. It removes your attention from worries and produces physical relaxation.
F. It also contributes to long-term health benefits like improving heart function.
G. You can express your emotions freely without worrying about others’ opinions.

Some of my best childhood memories are from my grandparents’ farm, filled with the gentle sounds of chickens. Among them, a special chick named Bulldozer became my closest friend. We named him for his funny, determined walk. Unlike other roosters, Bulldozer was gentle and quiet.
My favorite memory was watching him do his happy dance around the yard. He would run towards me, his feathers shaking with excitement, and then circle me as if celebrating my arrival. My dad, who usually was busy with work, always had a smile for Bulldozer. He enjoyed the rooster’s company while gardening. My mom would save him little treats from the kitchen, like bits of vegetable, and he would eat gently from her hand. In the evenings, I would often sit on the back steps doing my homework, and he would settle quietly beside me. Those peaceful moments were my treasure. He was more than a pet; he was a listener to my secrets and a calm part of our family’s daily life.
Bulldozer lived with us for several happy years, becoming a familiar and loved part of our neighborhood. However, one quiet autumn afternoon, something felt wrong. The yard was silent. Bulldozer, who was usually waiting for me at the fence, was nowhere to be seen. My heart dropped. We found him lying still under his favorite tree. He was gone, as if he had simply gone to sleep there. The vet said it was likely a peaceful, natural end due to his age.
We buried him under that same tree. The yard felt incredibly empty. I missed his dance, his quiet company, and the simple joy he brought to our family every day. The happy memories we shared now felt bittersweet, and a deep sadness settled in my heart.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
For a long time, I couldn’t bring myself to visit the corner of the yard.

【答案】4. B 5. C 6. C 7. A

11 What will the author most likely discuss next?
A. Different kinds of traditional meat.
B. Its short-term market performance.
C. Conditions for its future development.
D. Health risks of eating traditional meat.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. C 11. C

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

One morning weeks later, a soft sound from the corner pulled me from my thoughts.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 For a long time, I couldn’t bring myself to visit the corner of the yard. Every time I passed by, memories of Bulldozer’s happy dance and quiet company rushed in, making my eyes tear up. I avoided his favorite tree, where we used to sit together after school, and even skipped playing in the yard. My parents noticed my sadness and tried to comfort me, saying Bulldozer had lived a happy life with us. But I still felt empty, as if a part of my childhood had gone with him.
One morning weeks later, a soft sound from the corner pulled me from my thoughts. I walked over hesitantly and was surprised to see three fluffy chicks huddling under the tree — Bulldozer’s tree. My mom smiled and said they were from a neighbor, and we’d take care of them. As one chick walked towards me with a funny, determined step, just like Bulldozer, tears of joy rolled down my face. I knew Bulldozer’s warmth had never left; it lived on in these little lives, keeping our happy memories alive forever.
