Liu Lingli has been a teacher for hearing-impaired (听力受损的) children for 33 years. Her first communication with hearing-impaired people was with her neighbor, Mrs. Wang. One day, when Liu was playing in her house, Wang used sign language (手语) to communicate with her. But Liu couldn’t understand. Wang’s husband told Liu that Mrs. Wang wanted to make her a scarf.

The first safe, successful airplane was invented by the Wright brothers, Orville Wright and Wilbur Wright. However, their first flight, on December 17th, 1903, was not great news. On that day, there was nothing appearing in the newspaper. After a few days, short news began to appear in newspapers all over the country, but it seemed that no one was very interested in that.
Orville Wright drove the airplane up in the air and flew it for 12 seconds. Wilbur Wright took turns with his brother flying their airplane. The next two flights lasted twice as long as the first one. On the fourth flight that day, the airplane stayed in the air for 59 seconds. After it landed, a sudden wind blew the plane over. Their airplane was badly damaged. The first successful airplane never flew again.
After the Wright brothers, Louis Bleriot flew across the English Channel in 1909. He flew from France to England in an airplane which had only one set of wings. His flight was meaningful in history. He proved that people from different countries could now visit each other by air from now on.

Having worked as a village doctor in Henan village, Yunnan province, Yang Lianying has won praise from her community for her diligent work.
“My biggest hope is that villagers are healthy,” says Yang. Born in Mengzi, Yunnan, in 1980, Yang was a farmer for many years before she began to receive medical training in 2005.
Speaking about why she chose to become a doctor, she recalls a story when she was about 8 years old. Her mother suddenly fell ill. Since Henan village lies in a mountain area and as a village doctor, she often has to hike long ways to visit them at home. Moreover, village doctors don’t make much money but have heavy workloads. So few young people would like to do that. Yang has to care for nearly 2,000 villagers with only one other workmate.
But Yang keeps going. “Actually, I love this job and consider all the difficulties I meet as challenges. The villagers trust me. Can you imagine working on a scientific experiment for nearly fifteen years? That’s what Nicolas Appert, a French cook, did.
At that time, nobody knew exactly why food went bad. The bacteria (细菌) that make food go bad hadn’t been discovered yet. Food was dried or salted, but the methods influenced the food’s taste and didn’t always work. So Appert decided to invent a better way to store food.
Appert believed high temperatures might help, so he ran test after test. He experimented with soup, fruit and other foods. All that hard work finally paid off. He discovered a way that worked!
How did he store food? First, he put food in a glass bottle. Then he closed the bottle with a cork (木塞). He crossed two wires (金属线) over the top to hold the cork. Finally, he put it in boiling water.
Later, to run his business, Appert asked the government for money. They said they would—if Appert shared his method with everyone. Appert agreed and wrote a cookbook in 1810. Thousands of copies were printed. It was quite a hit.
Then vegetables and fruit picked in summer could be stored for the winter. Travelers could take the bottles on long trips. Four years later, Appert replaced glass bottles with tin cans (锡罐).

“I was moved by her kindness, and thought it would be great if she could speak,” Liu said, “so I decided to become a teacher for hearing-impaired students.”
At first, Liu almost gave up because of difficulties. She then thought about her neighbor and the pain on her face when she could not make people understand what she was trying to say. That made Liu stick to her dream of being a “special education” teacher and she succeeded.
Although she was only 18 at that time, she regarded the students as her children. Every day, she spent much time teaching them to speak. I’m from Canada and now live in Shanghai. I love planes very much and have many model planes. A C919 model plane is one of my favorites. The C919 is the first China-made plane. It made its first flight from Shanghai to Beijing on May 28 last year. The next day, it started regular (定时的) service, flying between Shanghai and Chengdu. As soon as I heard about the first regular flight, I decided to buy a ticket online. Luckily, I bought one just before they sold out.
