【中考真题】
“Stephen!” shouted Billy from the back of the class. “What’s 160 divided by 7?”

“Good job!” said Billy, copying the number down in his notebook.
“Stephen! When is Thomas’s birthday?” asked Mary.
“It’s February 16,” said Stephen, “and he was born on a Tuesday.”
“Wow!” said Thomas. “How did you know that?”
“You told me,” said Stephen, “on November 5 last year, at 3:05 pm. It was nine months, three days, four hours and sixteen minutes ago...”
Carol cut in, “You did the calculation (计算) all in your head?”
“Yes, of course,” said Stephen. “How else would I have done it?”
Carol couldn’t believe her ears and almost fell off her chair.
“Wow!” said Thomas. “We have a real genius (天才) here. Right here, in our class!” He looked at Stephen and gave him a big smile.
Stephen turned bright red, like a tomato. “I am not a genius,” he said quietly. “I’m just Stephen.”
“But you’re so good at math and remembering things, surely you must be a genius,” said Thomas kindly.
“I can prove (证明) I’m not,” said Stephen.
He got up and started to collect things from his classmates: a painting, a geography notebook, a history notebook and an English notebook. Then he went to the front of the class.
“Tell me what you see,” Stephen said, holding up Carol’s painting.
“A really good picture!” shouted out Thomas.
Next Stephen picked out Thomas’s geography notebook. “Listen up,” he said. “Test 1, A+. Test 2, A+. Test 3, A+.”
“Good job!” Mary shouted.
“Now you, Mary,” said Stephen. “History project last term-teacher’s words: an excellent piece of work. History project last year-teacher’s words: excellent, good job, Mary.”
Stephen continued, “Now I’m going to read you a poem.” It was from Billy’s English notebook
“What a beautiful poem!” said Carol.

Vicky’s mother opened the door. She had a look at Vicky’s bedroom.

Vicky was eating breakfast. Her father came into the kitchen and said, “Mom wants you to clean your room. It looks as if a hurricane passed through it.”
Joe, Vicky’s little brother, asked, “A hurricane? Is that a bad thing?”
“Sure it is,” said his father.
“I’ll do it after school, Dad,” said Vicky. “My first class is geography and Mr. Miller hates people to be late.” And off she ran through the front door.
Twenty minutes later, Vicky ran into her classroom.
“Today,” said Mr. Miller, “we’re going to learn about hurricanes. Have any of you seen a hurricane?” Vicky thought about her bedroom, but she said nothing.
“I haven’t seen one. Not a real one but I watched a program on TV and I know they destroy (破坏) things and leave a mess,” said James who sat next to Vicky.
“Yes,” said Mr. Miller. “But today I’m going to surprise you. Sometimes hurricanes do good.”
“Hurricanes can be good things?” Vicky asked.
“Oh, yes,” said Mr. Miller. “Hurricanes bring a lot of water to rivers and lakes that are becoming dry. Animals and fish come back to live in them. Hurricanes also pick up heat from the very hot areas of the world and drop it in less warm places.”
“So, hurricanes can be good things,” Vicky said to herself. “I’m going to show Mom the good part.”
When Vicky got home in the afternoon, she began to clean up her bedroom. She put all of her things in their proper places.
“Mom,” she called. “Can you come here for a minute?”

James Brown was ten years old when his parents sent him to school. It was not far from his home, so he went to school by himself.
But, instead of going to school, he was in the habit of playing truant (逃学). He would go into the fields, or spend his time with lazy boys. Then he lied to his mother that he had been to school, and that his lessons were very good.
One fine morning, his mother told James she would take him to his aunt’s after school. But, instead of minding her, he went off to the water, where there were some boats. There he met plenty of lazy boys. He was led by them to rent a boat, and to go with them upon the water.
Little did James think of the danger into which he was running. Soon the wind began to blow, and none of them knew how to manage the boat. For some time, they fought against the wind and the tide (潮水). At last, they became so tired that they could row no longer.
A large wave upset the boat, and they were all thrown into the water. Think of James Brown, the truant, at this time! He was far from home, known by no one. His parents didn’t know his danger at all. He was fighting in the water, on the point of being drowned (淹死).
Some men, however, saw the boys, and went out to them in a boat. They reached them just in time to save them. They were taken into a house, where their clothes were dried. After a while, they were sent home to their parents.
James was very sorry for what he had done, and he was never known to be guilty (内疚的) of the same thing again. He learned to pay attention to his books, and, above all, to obey his parents perfectly.

When I was young, doctors told me I might often get sick when the weather changed.
Because of this, I was never good at sports. During P.E. class, while others happily played games, I just stood on the side, quietly watching ants carry crumbs (碎屑) across the ground. Sometimes, I felt sad.

From that day on, I played with them in every P.E. class. After school, we spent an hour outdoors together. Sometimes we played sports, sometimes danced, and other times we just walked and talked.

Emma glanced (瞥见) at the huge card the class had made. Mr. Stinton wouldn’t like it if they bought presents for him, so Emma had suggested the class make a card and food just like he did for them. She’d spent much time planning the surprise party.
“I’m going to call Mr. Stinton,” Mrs. Bowman said. “Emma, will you turn off the lights please?”
Mrs. Bowman called Mr. Stinton saying the lights in the classroom had gone out. As soon as Mrs. Bowman hung up, Emma took one last look around the room and turned the lights off.
Emma heard the sound of Mr. Stinton’s shoes in the hallway. The doorknob (门把手) turned, so Emma turned the light on. Everyone called out. “Surprise!”
Mr. Stinton was surprised, but so was Emma. Mr. Stinton was carrying some balloons and cookies.
“A surprise party for me?” Mr. Stinton said. He walked to the huge card. “This is the most beautiful card I’ve ever seen.” He turned to Emma and handed her a card. “It makes my birthday card for you look kind of small.” He gave Emma the balloons and cookies. “Happy birthday, Emma. I was so excited when I found out we have the same birthday.”
“Happy birthday, Emma,” her classmates said.
“I’m glad we share the same birthday, too,” Emma said, smiling at Mr. Stinton.

Leo was a small and thin boy who lived in a small village. Some boys in the village often made fun of him and Leo was afraid.
One day, an old wizard (男巫) went by the village and saw Leo being made fun of. So when the bad boys left, he gave Leo a lion’s tail. “It’s a magic tail,” the wizard said.“When someone wears it and acts bravely, he or she will turn into a strong lion.” Leo hung the lion’s tail behind his body and decided to teach the bad boys a lesson.
But when the boys came, Leo was afraid and tried to run away. However, they caught him. Suddenly, Leo felt the tail behind his body and remembered what the wizard had said. He became brave. He looked them in the eye and said he would make them stop doing that. Leo felt the goosebumps (鸡皮疙瘩) all over his body. “This must be the sign that I am turning into a lion,” he thought. The boys ran away in fear. Leo wanted to catch them, but he found his legs were short as usual.
When the wizard saw it, he came to Leo. Leo was very happy, and wanted to tell him how the bad boys were frightened away. However, before he could even speak, he remembered his lion body had lasted only a short time.
“You are great,” said the wizard. “But have you ever seen a lion fighting? No one fights with lions because they know how brave and strong lions are.”

But deep down, he knew that he was just afraid of failing. One afternoon, as he walked past a small art workshop, he saw a sign in the window: “Chinese Painting Class for Beginners—Join Today!” Then, the instructor, a kind-looking woman named Ms. Oliver, welcomed him with a warm smile. “Have you painted before?” she asked. “No,” Liam admitted (承认). “I don’t think I’m very good at drawing.”

Then she said to me, “You should talk to Marcy and tell her that!”
I was quite shocked when I heard my daughter’s problem. After thinking about her situation for a while, an idea suddenly hit me. I quickly got two baskets from the living room. I told her, “At birth, each person is given a small basket. This small one here is yours, and the larger one belongs to me. As you grow up, your basket will grow bigger, too. You can see that your little basket is inside mine. That’s because when you were just born, there were so many things you couldn’t deal with on your own. I had to do everything for you that you couldn’t manage.”
Sara nodded, showing that she understood what I meant.
I continued, “As you grew and started to complete tasks independently, I began to place a few more things in your basket. For example, when you learned to tie your shoes, that skill went into your basket.”
She said softly with a sense of pride, “I can tie my own shoes.”
“Exactly. As you grow older, you’ll have to take on more and more tasks.” While saying this, I slowly separated her basket from mine and placed her basket in her hands. “Finally, you will carry your own basket filled with things that only you can do.”

Schools are supposed to be safe places for children all the time. Sadly, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) (国际红十字委员会) has seen accidents happen in schools from time to time. For this reason, the ICRC began its education program in 2017. First-aid training in schools around the world is one of its plans.
Kate is a 16-year-old student who wants to become a doctor when she grows up. She lives in New York. In the spring of 2021, she took part in the ICRC’s first-aid training. During the process, one important lesson she learned was that in dangerous situations, everyone must take care of themselves first before helping others.
Since joining in the training, Kate has learned a lot of first-aid skills. She has been able to use them to stop the bleeding (流血) and deal with the wound herself. She once helped her friend who hurt his hand with broken glass. She even taught other students who could not take part in the training as well as her younger cousins some first-aid skills she learned.
“The training is important,” Kate said. “The teachers and students in our school used to know little about first aid. Now we can carry out some of the skills correctly in different situations.”

When I was younger, I was a different person. I was shy and quiet, often hiding behind my parents. I didn’t like sharing my ideas, and I felt nervous in big groups. I would read some books instead of joining in games during the school break.
In my neighborhood, I had a group of friends. We spent our afternoons playing outside and riding bikes. I loved the feeling of the wind in my hair as we raced (飞奔) down the street. But still, I found it hard to share my ideas. If someone suggested a game, I usually agreed, even if I didn’t want to play. I was afraid of what others might think of me.
As time went on, I started to change. I joined a club at school and learnt to express myself through art. At first, I was nervous, but my teacher was encouraging. She told me that everyone has great ideas and we can share them. That made me feel brave. I began to speak up more and even shared my drawings with my classmates.
A new friendship also helped me change for the better. I met a boy named Sam, and he loved drawing just like me. We started to work together, and I found that sharing my ideas could be fun. Sam encouraged me to be more confident. I found when I opened up, others listened and enjoyed my ideas. That made me proud.
Now, I am not afraid to share my ideas any more. I have learnt that it’s great to be myself. I understand that my experiences have shaped who I am today, and I am excited to see where it will take me next.

【中考真题】
“Stephen!” shouted Billy from the back of the class. “What’s 160 divided by 7?”
“22.85714,” replied Stephen without looking up.

“What a mess! It looks as if a hurricane (飓风) passed through Vicky’s bedroom,” said Vicky’s mother. “I must ask her to clean it.”

“Hey, Sam,” said Mom. “Would you please put these paper-towel tubes in the dustbin?” Sam looked at the tubes and something came to him. He asked, “Could I use them to make a robot?” “Great idea!” said Mom. “Do you have any other good recycling materials?” asked Sam. “Come on. Let’s go and see what else we can find in our house,” said Mom.

When I was young, doctors told me I might often get sick when the weather changed.
Because of this, I was never good at sports. During P.E. class, while others happily played games, I just stood on the side, quietly watching ants carry crumbs (碎屑) across the ground. Sometimes, I felt sad.
But not long ago, things changed. Our school started morning exercises on Tuesdays and added two P.E. classes every Friday. My classmates were all excited, but for me, it didn’t matter.
Until one day, “Hey, Zhang Lei, do you want to play badminton with us?” someone called. ▲ But when I looked up, three classmates were walking towards me.
I was so surprised—no one had ever invited me before. “Me? But...”
“Come on, let’s go!” Li Ling said, taking my hand. They led me towards the playground.
The game began. The girl on the other side threw the shuttlecock (羽毛球) up. “Get ready!” she shouted. The shuttlecock flew high. I looked up and followed it with my eyes. For the first time, I saw the wide, blue sky.
From that day on, I played with them in every P.E. class. After school, we spent an hour outdoors together. Sometimes we played sports, sometimes danced, and other times we just walked and talked.

②One day Lily found a puzzle game online— The Perfect You.
③Curiously (好奇地), Lily clicked it and there was a puzzle piece with a green light on the screen. “No, I can’t stop now.” As soon as his voice fell, Ethan rushed out, leaving his father behind.
As the race continued, Ethan ran more slowly. The pebbles in his shoes made his feet hurt, and with each step, the pain increased.
Later, the father caught up with his son. “Dad, I can’t run anymore. It’s wrong of me to ignore (忽略) these pebbles.” Ethan said, with tears in his eyes.
The father stopped to check Ethan’s feet. His feet were badly hurt. So they had to stop the race and return home.
On their way home, the father said, “Ethan, taking a minute to remove pebbles seems like a waste of time, but it could save you from a week of pain. So if you meet problems, you’d better try to solve them, or they may grow and cause much more harm.”
“I get you, Dad. Learning how to deal with the challenges along the way is so important. It’s not just a race to the top, but a race to wisdom.” Ethan said.
