The morning school bell rang. Our history teacher, Mr. Zhang, entered the classroom and walked directly to turn on the TV. “Another boring history video!” my deskmate Lin Lin talked in a low voice, resting his head on the desk.
“Today,” Mr. Zhang began, his voice more serious than usual, “we’re going to witness (见证) living history.” The screen lit up, showing Beijing’s grand military parade (阅兵式) on that clear morning of September 3, 2025.
The classroom was noisy until the speaker mentioned “14 difficult years from 1931 to 1945.” Mr. Zhang stopped the video, “For 14 years,” he said seriously, “China never gave up and over 35 million people were killed or hurt! The hard fight and high cost helped stop a bigger global disaster.” We all fell into deep thought.
As we continued watching, we were slowly drawn in. After learning about the history behind it, the parade’s message—“Remember history, honor martyrs (烈士), value peace, and build the future”—became clear and meaningful to us. When the camera showed leaders from 26 countries attending, Lin Lin, who hadn’t been interested before, sat up straight and asked, “So many foreign leaders here, why?”
After the video ended, our classroom remained unusually quiet. Mr. Zhang explained that the parade was not about showing power, but a serious promise to protect today’s hard-earned peace. During the break, instead of discussing video games, we talked about what we had seen. Lin Lin even said he wanted to learn more about the martyrs mentioned. “How great they were!” he added.
That day’s lesson ended not with a bell, but with a new understanding—War is terrible and peace does not come easily. We should not forget that!
21. How does the passage begin?

B. By showing a classroom scene.
C. By describing a historical event.
D. By introducing a famous person.
22. What was the video mainly about?
A. The development of New China.

D. A parade to remember history and value peace.
23. What’s the main purpose of the military parade according to the passage?
①honor martyrs ②show military power
③protect today’s peace ④invite foreign leaders
A. ①③ B. ②④ C. ①② D. ③④

Have you ever looked up at the stars? Do you want to know more about them? A big telescope (望远镜) in China may help you explore them well. It is called the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (500米口径球面射电望远镜), or FAST for short. Because it is so large and powerful, people often call it China’s “Sky Eye”.
Dr. Jiang Peng has always loved watching the stars. After graduating, he made an important decision to join the FAST project. He now serves as its head engineer. When Jiang first learned about it, he was amazed by its huge size and difficult challenges. “I have always been interested in space and other planets since I was little, and I love solving difficult problems,” Jiang said. He believes that building big dreams requires both passion (热情) and hard work.
Jiang and his team had to connect thousands of steel cables (电缆) perfectly. “No one had done this task before; there wasn’t even a precedent of failure to learn from and every step felt like walking on thin ice,” said Jiang. But he never gave up, all driven by his passion for exploration. He worked with his team for years, and in 2016, FAST was finally completed.
Jiang hopes that more young people can study astronomy (天文学) in school. He thinks learning about space will help students understand science better. For example, the way stars shine for billions of years teaches us about balance in nature. He suggests adding astronomy to geography classes and calls it “Earth and Astronomical Sciences”. He also wants experts to help write clear and interesting textbooks for students. Now, it’s time for the next generation (一代人) to carry forward this love for the stars.

In traditional Chinese culture, a father’s love is often quiet but strong. A well-known piece of prose (散文), “The Sight of Father’s Back” by Zhu Ziqing tells of a typical traditional Chinese father. However, Chinese fathers show their love in different ways, and this love is always as deep as the ocean.
Zeng Guofan was a senior official and an army leader in the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). He always found time to write letters to his children. In the letters, he advised his children on good behavior towards family and friends.
Lu Xun was one of China’s greatest writers in the 20th century. He was known and respected for his direct and smart writing. However, to his son, Zhou Haiying, he was simply a gentle father.
As we continued watching we were slowly drawn in.

23. What’s the main purpose of the military parade according to the passage?
①honor martyrs ②show military power
③protect today’s peace ④invite foreign leaders
A. ①③ B. ②④ C. ①② D. ③④
24. How did Lin Lin’s feelings change in the story?
A. sad→surprised→moved
B. bored→nervous→worried
C. bored→interested→moved

A. needed a job after graduating
B. was asked by his team to join
C. enjoyed difficult challenges

28. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “precedent” in paragraph 3?
A. Excuse. B. Example. C. Method. D. Secret.
29 What can we infer from Jiang Peng’s suggestion about school classes?
A. Fun activities make science learning more enjoyable.
B. Geography is more important than astronomy in school.
C. The school science education is enough for the students.
D. Learning about space is good for students’ science studies.

While Lu Xun was writing, his son liked to choose the writing paper for him. Lu Xun always agreed on his son’s choices.
Fu Cong, a great pianist, always thanked his father for his education. His father, Fu Lei, was a famous scholar (学者) and translator. When Fu Cong grew up, he went to Poland to study the piano. Fu Lei missed his son and apologized (道歉) for being too strict with his son in the letter.
