I'm visiting a climbing center, called The Crag,to find out why so many people are
falling in love with indoor climbing. There are over 35 million climbers worldwide, and in
the UK the numbers have increased since the 1960s,when the first climbing walls were
created so that proper mountaineers could get some exercise when the weather or lack of
time kept them from their usual locales. Now,there are 500 or so walls in different cities
around the UK.
What's the attraction?"I find it really hard not to think about work all the time,"
says Katia Lennon, who has been climbing for two years."The wall is the one place
where I don't even need to try to switch off.You just focus on what you're doing.
"There's lots of problem-solving,working out where to put your hands and feet."Sam
Bailey says."The mental effort distracts you from doing much else."Teresa Ibarra,a
climbing instructor, points out that you don't need to be a great athlete to do it.All sorts
of body shapes and ages get something out of it.
One thing that surprises me,is the number of women in The Crag."It's non-
threatening-super-relaxing,"says Yasmine,"unlike most gyms I've been to.Other
women I talk to make the same point."Jasmine says,"You see muscly gym guys coming
in and thinking they're going to do it easily, but it doesn't happen for them."Another
climber,Aleida says,"I don't feel at a disadvantage,and I know some other women who
come here feel like me too.If a tall strong guy does the climb with a one-arm pull-up,I
can do it by throwing my leg into a split(劈叉)and balancing on a hold.”
I decide to have another go and share a wall with Sophie and her friend Luke. They
are both strong and confident. They also seem much more mature in their decision-
making and teamwork skills than children their age-though thinking about what I've
observed during my visit to The Crag, somehow it doesn't seem that surprising.

A wave of startups say seaweed is a solution to climate change-able to absorb
atmospheric carbon, provide raw materials for biofuels, and feed the world-no fertilizers
()fresh water,or even land required.Running Tide,a Maine-based company,is
working on a system that will eventually sink the buoys(),attached with long locks
of seaweed,to the deep ocean floor, where the carbon they contain will remain stored for
800 years or more.
Running Tide was founded by Marty Odlin,an engineer and fourth-generation
commercial fisherman. The Gulf of Maine is warming faster than nearly every other
oceanic region, and Odlin has seen the changes firsthand.About 15 years ago,Odlin
heard a talk from Klaus Lackner-the physicist who popularised the idea of removing
carbon from the atmosphere. It clicked."It was like,oh,this is right because there's no
way we're going to get off fossil(化石的)fuels in the next50 years,”he recalls thinking.
“We're going to have to pull it down.”
Using seaweed to draw down carbon would be an elegant solution-if it works.
Seaweed forests collectively cover an estimated two million square kilometers and absorb
as much carbon as the Amazon rainforest. But much of that storage is short-lived.When
the seaweed is harvested, eaten by animals,or washes ashore, its stored carbon is
released back into the atmosphere.Running Tide's model,in theory at least, would take
that stored carbon and sink it to the ocean floor where it would remain for centuries,
breaking down slowly.
Some scientists are careful about rushing ahead before fundamental scientific,
environmental, and regulatory questions are answered."Climate change is intensifying,
and people are panicking,"says Kristen Davis,a professor of University of California
Irvine,"but the science is not there yet to actually confirm that it's a good idea.

On a clear day,the tiny village of La Vega offers great views of the Atlantic Coast.
But this afternoon, the thick fog hanging over Jonay Gonzalez Perez and Sara Rodriguez
Dorta's farmland sets a special scene.
"There's almost enough fog to get you started collecting it,"says Mr.Gonzalez
Perez, walking through his farmland."But we need to wait a little longer, until the fog is
at the same level as the catcher."Since 2018,Mr.Gonzalez Perez and his wife have relied
entirely on fog collecting to water their 3.7 acres of farmland when rain is in short supply
in the summer months.
On a good day,the couple's435-yard-long wall of collectors-一vertical(垂直的)U-
shaped nets stuck into the ground with metal poles-can harvest 475 gallons of water. The
fog droplets fall from the nets and flow through 220 yards of black tubing, which snake
down into a 95,000-gallon storage tank()that looks like a giant waterbed.
Their system-which the couple built with their own hands over the course of a
year-was entirely paid by the government, after they won a local award for the best
initiative in rural farming. But this isn't just a pet project for farmers. In 2020,the
European Commission partnered with the local government in neighboring Gran Canaria
to fund the Life Nieblas fog-collecting project, which aims to reforest areas destroyed by
drought or forest fire.Harvested fog water meets the World Health Organization's
standards on drinking water safety and has provided isolated()communities with a
much-needed resource for decades.
As the Canary Islands and regions around the world look to address the effects of
climate change, fog collecting is becoming an increasingly practical technology for

communities facing water supply challenges.
"Fundamentally,we depend on our groundwater in the Canary Islands and water is
always short,"says Maria Victoria Marzol Jaen,a climate scientist."Fog water alone
can't make up for this, but it can be useful for reforestation purposes, like in the case of
forest fires. But for rural zones, where water consumption is much lower, fog collecting is
more than just helpful. It can be the solution to water problems.
12.Which of the following best describes the system used by Mr.Gonzalez Perez?
A.It turns raindrops into drinking water.
B.It applies advanced technology to create fog.
C.It is a series of underground waterbeds collecting fog.
D.It meets their farmland's watering needs during dry months.
13.What significantly helped Mr.Gonzalez Perez and his wife finance their system?
A.Government support.
B.Their personal savings.
C.Donations from their local neighbors.
D.A prize from the World Health Organization.
14.How is fog water beneficial for the Canary Islands according to Jaen?
A.It can produce energy for isolated communities.
B.It provides enough water to replace groundwater.
C.It solves water consumption problems in rural areas.
D.It decreases the frequent occurrence of severe wildfires.
15.What can be a suitable title for the text?

It's no secret that artificial intelligence is changing the way we work. With more and
more simpler tasks being automated, humans are left with more high-level cognitive
work,such as idea generation,strategic planning,and creative writing.16
The problem is that we still follow a mindset that resembles the era of assembly(
lines, which doesn't foster or facilitate the type of work needed today.Leaders
constantly measured productivity in terms of how many hours an employee spent at work
or the number of abstract targets they reached.17 This type of output doesn't fit in
the era of AI.Instead,we have to make a psychological switch, structuring each workday
for quality instead of quantity.

shows that continuous work impairs()creative idea generation and high quality,
complex cognitive work.18 It's recommended that using work sessions that are about
90 minutes long, attacking the hardest part of the task in the first 20 minutes and moving
to the slower, easier work during the remaining time.
19 Therefore, managers should consider the principal area that a team or
individual is working on rather than imposing the same work schedule across a team or an
organization.Data suggests that it's better to work on tasks that involve creativity,
imagination, and problem solving during the first few hours of the day and again right
before you go to sleep.20 In between the focused work sessions, make time for a nap
or for easy work that doesn't require much creativity or focus.
A.That's because people tend to overwork.
B.The time of day will also make a difference.
C.As a result,quantity of work was prioritized.
D.To excel in the new era,we'll need to transform how we work.
E.With every new technology comes fear and then new opportunity.
F.Because of that,it's better to work in bursts, giving the mind a rest.
G.The middle of the day is better for something calling for concentration.

The tornado()blew through on a Sunday. We were visiting grandparents in
Raleigh then.Unaware that seventy miles away the big tree in our front yard was tearing

When we returned,we saw Rosica's father and brothers in our yard, gathering debris

barely knew them then. They were covered in sweat and dirt.
My mom didn't seem to notice how happy they were to help us because the first thing
she said was "Oh you don't need to be doing all that work!"Mr.Flores laughed,"Clard!
Of course,we don't.But more importantly you cannot sleep in that house tonight.Come
and speak to my wife. She'll help you figure out what to do."My mom doesn't usually let
people tell her what to do,but she sighed()deeply,as she took in the sight of our
home in the failing light, reached for my hand and followed our neighbor to their house.
The Flores family lived across the street.Their home was the same size as ours but
housed three generations.Rosica was my age.I knew her name and face, but since she was
new to our school and had a different teacher,we had never spoken. It was she who
answered the door,"Mama is changing the sheets on the bed for you,and there's some
lemon cheesecake on the table.
"Please don't trouble yourself.I think I'd call a hotel and see about a room,"my
mom said more uneasy than usual.Mrs.Flores came down the stairs and smiled at us
