Ms. West was born in 1930, and grew up on a small farm in Virginia. At the time, Black people were not equal to white people. Ms. West went to a one-room school with other black children.
But Ms. West knew that education was important. She studied hard, earning a scholarship to Virginia State College. She graduated with a degree in mathematics. After graduating, she taught math and science at schools for Black students.
In 1956, Ms. West got a job at the US Navy’s Dahlgren Laboratory.Ms. West worked on a project aimed at figuring out the exact shape of the Earth.
As part of her work, Ms. West had to program one of the world’s first supercomputers. At the time, these were huge devices, and information had to be entered into the system using paper cards with holes punched in them.
Ms. West’s work helped create an extremely precise mathematical model of the Earth’s shape. This model was used to plan the orbits of satellites for the GPS system.
The GPS system helps people around the world every day. If you’ve ever seen someone using a map on a phone, then you’ve seen the system that Ms. West helped develop.
In spite of Ms. West’s successes, she wasn’t really recognized for her work until 2018, when she won several awards.

Passage1阅读理解
Imagine waiting at a bus stop, excited to explore a new city. The bus arrives, and you settle into your seat, eager for the journey ahead. But as the bus starts moving, the hot sun shines in, ruining your mood. The thought stays in your mind: If only I’d chosen the other side of the bus. Now, what if you could predict which side of the bus would be shaded during your trip? Veyil may be a simple solution to the everyday problem.
Veyil, an app, is designed for those who rely on public transport. It mainly helps users identify which side of the bus will stay cooler and shaded during the journey. Using the Veyil app is simple — just input (输入) your starting point, destination, travel time and the day. The app then analyses your route using GPS, accurately calculating sunlight directions to determine the sunniest and shadiest spots. It provides real-time guidance on whether to sit on the left or right side of the bus for comfort.
What sets Veyil apart is its philosophy (哲学) — the belief that small, practical solutions can address significant inconveniences. Its creators believe in empowering users with tools that simplify daily experiences, one journey at a time. This philosophy comes to life through moving stories from users. “Once we got a message from a lady thanking us for the app. She shared that because of Veyil, her new baby is able to sleep well during bus journeys,” says Hadi, one of Veyil’s creators.
The idea of the app started in 2019 when creators decided to use technology to solve common travel issues. In May 2025, the complete version of the app was released. Accessible as both an app and a website, Veyil ensures easy use for everyone. As it gains popularity, it’s set to change how people think about public transport.
With plans to work with weather updates and further shade-tracking, the app serves as a great example of how technology can bring comfort to life.
1.What’s the feature of Veyil?
A.It cures users of travel sickness. B.It uses GPS to locate users’ position.
C.It guides users to take comfortable seats. D.It helps users find the destination easily.
2.What can we infer from Hadi’s words in the third paragraph?
A.Users are satisfied with Veyil. B.Veyil targets young users.
C.Babies tend to sleep on public transport. D.Hadi was moved to tears by the stories of Veyil.
3.What was the inspiration for creating the Veyil app?
A.The need to improve the accuracy of public transport schedules.
B.The goal of making public transport more environmentally friendly.
C.The idea of providing more entertainment options for bus passengers during their journey.
D.The desire to use technology to solve common travel issues related to sun exposure on buses.
4.What’s the best title of the text?
A.Can Passengers Choose Cooler Seats?
B.Will Transport System Be Updated?
C.Will Public Transport Be Replaced?
D.Can Weather Be Predicted Better?
Passage2阅读理解
(2026·安徽省华师联盟质量检测)Sixteen rescued seal pups, fitted with GPS trackers, have been spotted swimming in France and Ireland after being released from the British coast. The Cornish Seal Sanctuary (避难所) and the University of Exeter tracked their movements this winter, discovering that the young seals travelled long distances in international waters.
The first pup, named Maggot, surprised researchers by swimming over 150 miles to Brittany. Another pup, Selkie, rescued in January, became the first to cross into France, swimming up the River Somme before settling in the eastern English Channel. Whirligig, rescued from Weymouth, returned to local waters and was later seen resting in Brixham Harbour. Dung beetle, released in South Cornwall, swam to Ireland and is still exploring near Wexford.
The data helps researchers understand how rescued seals adapt to the wild. Anne Van Domberg, a senior animal care specialist, said, “For the first time, we see where they go, how fast they settle, and where they find food. This gives us valuable information on their success after release.” Two other seals, JP and Bug, were also seen thriving (茁壮成长) along the Cornish coast.
The sanctuary treated over 30 pups this winter, many needing medical care. Anne added, “We rescue seals with the aim of releasing strong, healthy animals back into the wild; but thanks to this technology, we’re finally able to follow their stories beyond the shoreline. It’s amazing to see them thriving, exploring, and in some cases, travelling hundreds of miles. It’s real proof that our work matters. It’s so exciting to see where they head off to and heartwarming to know that they are doing so well out there in the wild.”
The sanctuary also reminded the public to keep a safe distance of at least 100 metres from wild seals to avoid disturbing them.
5.What was the main finding about the rescued seal pups?
A.They mostly stayed near the British coast.
B.They travelled far in different countries’ waters.
C.They liked to stay in one place.
D.They were afraid of deep water.
6.What can be known about Selkie?
A.It revisited its rescue location after release.
B.It undertook the longest migration of all pups.
C.It was the pioneer to enter France.
D.It preferred quiet island environments.
7.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.How seals find food in the wild. B.Seals’ success after release.
C.Rescued seals’ living conditions. D.Data’s value for seal research.
8.What does Anne think of their work?
A.Worthless. B.Rewarding. C.Perfect. D.Impractical.
Passage 3 阅读七选五
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
(2026·福建省全国名校联盟期中)In my backpack, there is always a waterproof paper map. 1 Instead, it is my main tool for navigating (导航).
I have tried digital devices and set precise points on my GPS watch. But every time I use it, I feel a strange distance. 2 It reduces the land into simple lines and dots, while the real wilderness is full of details and textures (肌理). Unfolding a paper map feels more engaging. I trace the lines with my fingers and match the symbols to the rivers I see in the distance. I am not being guided passively. I am actively building my own understanding of the land.
3 A screen tells you: “You are here and follow this line.” But a map asks you: “Where are you? What surrounds you? How will you move through this place?” When I stare at a blinking dot on a screen, I seem to forget the sunlight, the wind, and the sounds of the forest. But with a paper map, I watch, think, and most importantly, engage fully with the environment.
A paper map turns every step into a conversation with nature. 4 I remember once getting lost on a mountain path. I stopped, spread out my map, and tried to match what I saw around me with the details on the map. Slowly, the landmarks began to line up, and the landscape started to make sense again.
Of course, I value safety. My GPS watch is always with me. I reserve it for emergency, but the paper map gives me something more: the memory of finding my way. 5 .
So next time you go into the wild, bring a paper map. Let your eyes, hands, and mind explore, get lost, and discover the land on your own terms.
A.It is not just a silent backup.
B.It is like reading an over-simplified world.
C.They never run out of battery, which is a relief.
D.Even losing my way enhances this connection.
E.I sometimes wonder what it really means to navigate.
F.I learn to trust my own judgement rather than the map.
G.And I will always appreciate the patience and self-trust it builds.

To celebrate turning 50, my friend and I decided to run a marathon, aiming to break 4 hours. It’s not a time that would especially 1 any competitive runner, but it was our goal and a nice round number.
Glancing at my running 2 repeatedly, I knew we had it in the bag. We just needed to 3 our current pace. We were moving forward effortlessly.
But when I crossed the finish line, the official time was 4:04:04. According to my watch, I had 4 27.13 miles — nearly a mile beyond the standard 26.2. My friend’s watch read 27.39. Our tale is far from 5 . I’ve heard the same story from other runners: Your watch tells you one thing, reality tells you another. It was a real blow.
There were three possible reasons. First, the course 6 might be inaccurate. Second, my GPS watch 7 me. Finally, I ran a highly 8 race, making lots of unnecessary zigzags (之字形).
The race director 9 the course, “We totally focus on getting the exact measurement, not 2 inches off.” Then I 10 the watch company and the project manager 11 the second assumption: Things like GPS drift (偏差) can also cause your activity to report more or less distance than you 12 traveled.
So, what can runners do on race day? Mark Carroll, a two-time Olympian, said, “Don’t let your watch take away from the 13 of the event.” Maybe if I can get prepared for another 26.2 miles, I’ll try a totally different approach: Forget my watch, 14 zigzagging to high-five the crowd, and just run for the sake of running. After all, the 15 of a marathon is just doing it.
1.A.influence B.touch C.move D.impress
2.A.shoes B.shorts C.watch D.pack
3.A.record B.adjust C.quicken D.maintain
4.A.paved B.covered C.measured D.stretched

故填to come。
