AI tools regularly make mistakes and make up sources. By some estimates, over half of AI-driven answers have factual errors. Children’s exposure to misleading information online isn’t new. 1 Even children who are online only for short periods likely see false or inaccurate information. Here’s how to help them spot it.
2
Any parent knows the feeling of being caught in a never-ending loop (循环) of whys from their kid. 3 Provide informative answers, but build their thought processes, too. “Great question, what do you think? What makes you think that? How would we find out what’s right?” You’ll develop their critical thinking by emphasizing the process of reasoning, not just the outcome.
Encourage skepticism (怀疑).
Children’s skepticism is context-specific. My colleagues and I have demonstrated, for example, that even four-year-olds show basic fact-checking abilities in digital contexts under the right circumstances. When they notice that a platform contained some misinformation in the past, they seek out more evidence before accepting a new claim. 4 For example, if you come across a doubtful AI summary, comment on it out loud.
Practice strategic disengagement (脱离).
Critical thinking is slow and deliberate. Scrolling through a social media feed is quite the opposite. Even when a questionable post arouses skepticism, that feeling might fade as soon as a newer piece of content appears. 5 Taking frequent breaks can stop the habit of endless, passive consumption. Another simple strategy is to teach children that if something arouses strong emotions, they should pause.
A.Use children’s natural curiosity. B.But now AI has worsened the problem. C.When that desire to learn strikes, join in. D.Evaluate the quality of children’s questions. E.Show your child you also doubt things online. F.Ultimately, kids’ presence in the digital landscape is a reality. |

Have you ever noticed that some people can eat what they want and stay in shape, while others carefully watch what they eat and still put on weight? 6
Scientists say when some people eat, their bodies will naturally store the extra energy from food as fat. 7 Meanwhile, other people eat more than they need but their bodies are able to “burn off” the extra food without making fat, so rarely have weight problems.
Through experiments, scientists found that eating the same food and getting the same exercise, some lab mice gained weight while others stayed thin. They concluded weight gain seemed to be influenced by genetic factors. 8
The study of weight gain is becoming more important as the number of people who are overweight continues to grow. 9 This means they are at risk of illness such as high blood pressure and heart disease.
Current medicines for weight control do not work very well because they can have serious side effects. 10 Therefore, despite this breakthrough in the study of weight-loss drugs, scientists and health professionals all agree that currently the best way to control weight gain is to have a healthy, balanced diet and an active lifestyle with daily exercise. This will not only help people avoid becoming overweight, but also help them stay healthy and energetic.
A.So people turn to other methods to control their weight. B.So they hope more people become aware of their weight control. C.These people gain weight if they eat more than they need each day. D.In the United States, over 70% of the population have weight problems. E.However, it takes a long time to develop and thoroughly test new drugs. F.However, scientists believe that some people stay thin due to their genes. G.Thus they believe it could lead to developing medicines that prevent weight gain. |

Have you ever considered whether to spend on a vacation or buy a new phone? While buying something new brings an immediate rush of excitement, studies show that this happiness disappears quickly. 11 This article explores why experiences are more satisfying than material belongings and improve well-being in ways objects can't.
12 Hedonic adaptation (享乐适应), the idea given by psychologists Brickman and Campbell, means even the most exciting buying becomes ordinary over time. For example, when you buy something new, like a phone or a piece of clothing, the excitement is high at first, but it soon becomes part of your daily routine.

Another reason why experiences outweigh material belongings is that they tend to include other people, deepening relationships and creating connections. Whether traveling with family or trying a new restaurant with a friend, shared experiences strengthen social relationships. 13 They offer a sense of belonging and community.
That's not to say material things don’t have their place — some pieces bring joy and meaning, especially if they have emotional value. A well-loved guitar or a thoughtful gift can carry emotional significance. However, the happiness from objects is often tied to their practical use or related memories, rather than the pieces themselves. 14
So, what’s your take on this? Have you ever spent money on something you wanted for so long, only to realize it didn’t last? And what's an experience you spent money on that still brings a smile to your face whenever you think about it? 15 After all, it’s not the things we collect but the memories and connections we create that truly make life rich.
A.And they are the necessities in our daily life. B.One reason lies in a theory put forward in 1971. C.Maybe it's time to rethink what we spend money on. D.These connections are significant sources of happiness. E.Things are meaningful because of the connections objects create. F.The key is balancing spending on material goods and experiences. G.Instead, spending on experiences creates longer-lasting happiness. |
