A Social Media Detox Campaign
Last week a “Social Media Detox” campaign was successfully held in our school, whose intention was to raise students’ awareness of over-reliance on social media and encourage their real-world connection.
The event kicked off with an inspiring lecture, regarding negative effects of social media and practical tips for better usage. Then came a lively panel discussion, where students shared their experiences and reflected on how social media impacted their lives. A 24-hour digital-free challenge became the highlight, asking students to stay away from social media completely.
The response was overwhelmingly positive. Many students said that the activity helped them reconnect with the world around them and focus on meaningful conversations. Overall, this innovative campaign has not only promoted healthy social media habits but also inspired them to embrace real-life interactions.

M: What does the app do, Jessica?
W: It s an exam organiser app. You put in when your exams are, how much you need to study for each subject, the topics you need to study and the app creates a study plan for you(1).
M: That could save some time, Does it do anything else?
W: Yes, Harry. It tells you when to take a break and have something to eat too, it also recommend different types of exercise and it reminds you to get enough sleep.
M: Can I use it to share information with my friends?
W: Yeah. That’s the most useful thing, I think. You can make study groups so that you can ask questions, exchange notes, tips and ideas and generally help each other.(2)
M: Fantastic! Where did you get the idea from?
W: Well, one of the competition challenges was called “study group through communication” and i thought of this idea. I never thought we would win though!(3)
M: Amazing! But will the app do the exams for us?
W: That would be unfair. Harry!

Are zoos necessary, or are they only bad to the animals?(4) This is a question that causes disagreement among many animal experts. Some, we may just call them Group A, believe that placing animals in a zoo does harm to them. These people think that all animals should be protected from being hunted illegally for fur or skins and left in their natural habitats, which we can call wildlife reserves. They also advise people to be educated to know more about animals in the wild.(5) Other experts of Group B think differently. They say that modem zoos are designed very closely to the natural environment. They believe that certain species, such as the panda from China and the white tiger from India, are not only protected from uncontrolled hunting and killing but can give birth to babies under protection and in that way they may be saved from dying out.(6) OK, that’s all from me and you’re expected to express your opinions on this question next class.

Good morning, class. Now I’ll tell you something about the history of English. Old English is very difficult to understand. Only a few experts can read it. Several written works from the Old English period have remained. Perhaps the most famous is called Beowulf(7). The name of the person who wrote it is not known.
In 1066, William took control of England. The language used by the new rulers slowly changed the way English was spoken 800 years ago. English became what language experts call Middle English, which was used between about 1150 CE and 1500 CE(8). Middle English sounds like Modern English. Many written works from this period have been passed down. Perhaps the most famous was written by Geoffrey Chaucer, who lived in London and died there in the 1400s. Chaucer's most famous work is The Canterbury Tales, written more than 600 years ago.(9)
The history of the English language continues as Middle English becomes Modern English. I’ll talk about Modern English after a short break.(10)

Hello, and welcome to this week's edition of the Global Culture Podcast. Today, we're going to discuss UNESCO World Heritage sites. Places as unique and significant as the Mogao caves in China, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the pyramids of Egypt are part of our shared heritage. There are already over a thousand UNESCO World Heritage sites.
What are the benefits of gaining heritage site status then? Firstly, once a site is listed, it is brought under the supervision of UNESCO. It means better protection and conservation. There will be more technical and financial (11) assistance to protect and preserve the site. This is true especially when the site is critically endangered. For example, Angkor, capital of the Khmer Empire from the 9th to the 15th century, entered the World Heritage list in 1992 and was added to the list of World Heritage in danger in the same year. UNESCO then worked together with international experts and the local government to protect and manage the site. After a decade of hard work, Angkor was removed from UNESCO's danger list in 2004 (12). Secondly, as soon as a site gains its World Heritage status, the public will pay more attention to it. The new heritage site is likely to attract more tourists (13) from far and wide, at home and abroad. The boom in tourism will in turn lead to economic development. This is especially important for poorer countries, for it will boost the service industries and create different kinds of jobs for the residents. Also, economic development will make it possible to improve the local infrastructure. More roads and bridges (14) can benefit not only the tourists, but also the local people. Moreover, the inclusion of any site in the World Heritage list is a source of national pride (15).

Sometimes a book comes along that isn't just "interesting"or "well done"-it's a
book where it seems like the author looked into your brain and wrote a book specifically
for you.A book like that for me was released this week. It's called 100 Things We've
Lost to the Internet, written by editor Pamela Paul.
Paul lists 100 things we used to do that the Internet has either changed or taken over
completely:writing letters, print newspapers, the joys of being bored, and not having all
the knowledge in the world in your pocket.
AsI'm a longtime accumulator(收集者)of random knowledge,.certain entries(条目)
on the list---Being the Only One,Figuring Out Who That Actor Is--hit me where I
live, remembering detailed facts is no longer nearly as impressive when everyone has
the capability to find the answer in seconds.
On and on the list goes, with every minor shift adding to the pile. What this book
does so well is illustrate the growth of that pile, while any individual item might be no
big deal, the collected set is significant. It's a list of ways in which the world now is
different from the world then.
Obviously,Paul isn't saying that everything back then was better.Time marches on,
after all,and it's tough to argue against the many benefits that the Internet has brought
into our lives. But that isn't really the point. It's not about whether it used to be better.
It's that it used to be different.
100 Things We've Lost to the Internet is a fun read for those of us who share some
of Paul's memories and experiences. We remember what it was like and we like to
remember. The landscape has shifted, and no doubt it will shift again as technology's
advancement continues apace. This book serves as a reminder of the simple truth that
when gains are made, sometimes something is lost.
29.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To review and recommend a good read
B.To comment on the effect of the Internet.
C.To argue for the viewpoint of a new book.
D.To urge the readers to value what they have.
30.Which might be entries on Paul's list?
A.E-pay and Compact Disks.
B.Bad Photos and Washing Machines.
C.Maps and Eye Contact.
D.Postcards and Homeschooling.

31.What does the underlined phrase "hit me where I live"in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Prove what I'm good at.
B.Introduce how I grew up
C.Describe the place I live in
D.Speak out what is on my mind.
32.What conclusion has the author drawn after reading Paul's book?
A.Things in the past are better.
B.There're no gains without pains
C.The Internet is a double-edged sword.
D.Technology is constantly changing the world

Not too long ago,on a cold winter night, there was a teenager who wanted more
screen time and a parent who said no.The teenager was advocating()for her right
to scroll()for an extra 30 minutes. The parent argued that none of her
friends'parents let them have screens after 9 o'clock."I thought,in this family,we
don't compare ourselves with other people,Dad?"the teenager replied. The parent-
who was me by the way-just got served.Since they were young,I have told my kids
not to compare themselves with other people.I have argued countless times that
comparisons are the"thief ofjoy".
Although my daughter didn't win,she did help expose one of the worst pieces of
advice I have ever given. Now is the time to set the record straight, which starts with
questioning the idea that all social comparison is unhealthy.
Social comparisons do,of course, often get us into emotional trouble. But they can
be harnessed()for our betterment if we understand how they work. The social
comparisons we make-ones that lead us to feel good or bad about ourselves-are vital
to our ability to thrive().Science provides a guide we can use to harness the way
we perform these comparisons to reduce their negative emotional impacts.
Comparing yourself with someone who is outperforming you could result in
feelings of envy if you focus on the things they have and you don't,or it can be
energizing and inspiring if you use these comparisons as a source of motivation, for
example,"If they can achieve that,so can I."Comparing yourself with someone who is
doing worse than you could result in fear and worry if you think about how you could
fall into similar circumstances,or it can draw out feelings of gratitude and appreciation
高一英语
第6页共12页
if you use that comparison to broaden your views-for example,"Wow,things could be
much worse;I'm doing great."
I wish I had taught my daughter these earlier. How we feel about ourselves rests not
just on whom we compare ourselves with but also on how we think about that
comparison. That's something we all have control over.
33.How did the author feel about his daughter's argument?
A.Excited.
B.Inspired.C.Energized.
D.Relieved.
34.We can infer from the last two paragraphs that the author agrees that
A.it's better to avoid comparing ourselves with others completely
B.our attitude towards comparison determines our emotional response
C.comparing with those who are better always brings negative feelings
D.social comparison's effects depend entirely on who we choose to compare with.
35.How does the author develop the passage?
A.From theory listing to personal proof.
B.From listing examples to a single theory
C.From personal story to scientific analysis.
D.From questioning data to confirming tradition.
36.Which would be the best title for the passage?
A.Social Comparisons Can Be Controlled by Science
B.Social Comparisons Can Get Us into Emotional Trouble
C.Comparing Ourselves with Others Can Strengthen Family Ties.
D.Comparing Ourselves with Others Can Become a Healthy Habit

Gizzly bears can grow to about 2.5m long and weigh over 400kg.They hold a
conflicted place in the American mind:people respect them, but they give us frightening
dreams.Ask the tourists from around the world that flood into Yellowstone National
Park what they most hope to see,and their answer is often the same:a grizzly bear
“Grizzly bears are re-occupying large areas of their former range(领地),”says bear
biologist Chris Servheen. As grizzly bears expand their range into places where they
haven't been seen in a century or more, they're increasingly being sighted by humans.
The western half of the U.S.was full of grizzlies when Europeans came, with a rough
number of 50,000 or more living alongside Native Americans.By the early 1970s,after

centuries of cruel and continuous hunting by settlers,600 to 800 grizzlies remained on a
mere 2 percent of their former range in the Northern Rockies. In 1975,grizzlies were
listed under the Endangered Species Act.
Today, there are about 2,000 or more grizzly bears in the U.S.Their recovery has
been so successful that the U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service has twice attempted to de-list
grizzlies, which would loosen legal protections and allow them to be hunted. Both
efforts were overturned due to lawsuits from conservation groups. For now, grizzlies
remain listed.
Obviously,if precautions aren't taken,grizzlies can become troublesome,sometimes
killing farm animals or walking through yards in search of food.If people remove food
and attractants()from their yards and campsites, grizzlies will typically pass by
without trouble.Putting electric fencing around chicken houses and other farm animal
quarters is also highly effective at getting grizzlies away."Our hope is to have a clean,
attractant-free place where bears can pass through without learning bad habits,"says
James Jonkel, longtime biologist who manages bears in and around Missoula
