When I was a young boy, every summer, Mom, Dad, my brothers and I would climb into our old car and drive for 7 hours over long mountain roads to visit Mom’s relatives in Tennessee. We always stayed in Grandma’s house there with her, Uncle Rich and Aunt Charlotte. It was a fun time with days full of excitement and joy. Often Aunt Charlotte would even make us a Thanksgiving dinner in the summertime. Some of my happiest childhood memories came from those visits.
One especially holds a special place in my heart. During that visit, I had great fun every day. One evening, I climbed into bed in the guest bedroom on the second floor of the house. Although I had played and explored the whole day and was really tired, I was still wide awake, my mind racing with the day’s sweet events. As I lay there, I heard the most pleasant sound coming from the front window below me. It was laughter. Mom, Dad, Uncle Rich, and Aunt Charlotte were down there sharing stories and telling jokes. The laughter was so happy, so joyous, that I found myself smiling. And even then in my young mind and childish heart, I realized that this is how life should be. The laughter became a sweet song to me and I fell asleep feeling all was right with the world.
Whenever my life seems too hard or crazy, I look back on that memory. And I took the lessons that Uncle Rich and Aunt Charlotte taught me. They always lived their lives with love and joy and laughter and smiles. Uncle Rich passed away many years ago but Aunt Charlotte is still alive. I write to her each week and I am so thankful to still have her in my life.
We fill lives with laughter, smiles, love and joy. We not only give ourselves happiness but also make this world a better and more beautiful place.

Growing up, students are repeatedly told that their actions and choices in high school will influence the rest of their lives, but to what degree is this actually the case? In fact, far more of the decisions made in high school matter and can decide the rest of one’s life than many may think, including one’s grades, behavior, friendships, and so on.
Failing to perform well in high school can influence students’ future by reducing their school choices for further education and even their chances of getting a good job in the future. Studies have shown that a student’s GPA (grade point average) is related to his future pay, with students who have a 4.0 GPA making more than $50,000 a year, while those with a 2.5 GPA or lower may not even break $40,000.
Yet, the importance of high school is beyond report cards. According to Erik Erikson, a developmental psychologist (心理学家), the events happening between the ages of 12 and 18 decide whether or not a person develops a full sense of self. During this stage, teens generally ask themselves “Who am I?”. They often identify themselves with certain types of music, books, etc., through which teens begin to discover themselves and their relationship with the world.
Social circles also play a role in shaping who you are. Schools offer a special environment in which students find themselves in one place for no reason other than age and where they live. Clearly, this provides students with experiences they couldn’t find anywhere else and allows them to develop good and real friendships.
Without a doubt, choices made in high school have effects that flash throughout one’s whole life. Therefore, high school students and their families must make sure that they have a good experience and a healthy environment for self-exploration. It is worth mentioning that while students need to concentrate mainly on their grades and behavior, they shouldn’t fall into the common trap (陷阱) of caring too much.
8. Why does the author mention students’ GPA in paragraph 2?
A. To stress the uncertainty of the future. B. To list the results of different subject choices.
C. To show the long-term effects of grades. D. To compare grading methods across schools.
9. Which can replace the underlined phrase “identify themselves with” in paragraph 3?
A. Stand out from. B. Think highly of. C. Keep away from. D. Feel a connection to.
10. What leads to close friendships during teenage years according to the text?
A. Common study goals. B. The similar age and location.
C. Shared hobbies and interests. D. The same family background.
11. What is the author’s suggestion for high school students?
A. Valuing parent-child relationships highly. B. Trying to become the top student in class.
C. Preparing for future jobs as early as possible. D. Balancing school grades with personal growth.
C 9. D 10. B 11. D
根据第二段“Failing to perform well in high school can influence students’ future by reducing their school choices for further education and even their chances of getting a good job in the future. Studies have shown that a student’s GPA (grade point average) is related to his future pay, with students who have a 4.0 GPA making more than $50,000 a year, while those with a 2.5 GPA or lower may not even break $40,000.(在高中表现不佳会影响学生的未来,因为这会减少他们继续接受教育的学校选择,甚至减少他们未来找到好工作的机会。研究表明,学生的平均绩点(GPA)与他未来的工资有关,GPA为4.0的学生每年的收入超过50000美元,而GPA为2.5或更低的学生甚至可能不会超过40000美元。 )”可知,作者提到学生的GPA是为了说明高中表现不佳会影响未来教育选择和就业机会,也就是说为了显示成绩的长远影响。故选C。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“According to Erik Erikson, a developmental psychologist, the events happening between the ages of 12 and 18 decide whether or not a person develops a full sense of self. During this stage, teens generally ask themselves ‘Who am I?’. They often identify themselves with certain types of music, books, etc., through which teens begin to discover themselves and their relationship with the world.(根据发展心理学家埃里克·埃里克森的说法,12至18岁之间发生的事件决定了一个人是否发展出完整的自我意识。在这个阶段,青少年通常会问自己‘我是谁?’。他们经常_____某些类型的音乐、书籍等,通过这些,青少年开始发现自己以及他们与世界的关系。)”可知,青少年通过与音乐、书籍等建立连接探索“我是谁”,认同自我,进而发现自我与世界的关系。可推测,“identify themselves with”意为“认同自我,探索自我身份”,选项D“Feel a connection to(与…… 产生联结)”可替换画线单词,符合题意。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Schools offer a special environment in which students find themselves in one place for no reason other than age and where they live. Clearly, this provides students with experiences they couldn’t find anywhere else and allows them to develop good and real friendships.(学校为学生提供了一个特殊的环境,使他们仅仅因为年龄和居住地相同就聚集在同一个地方。在这个环境中,学生们除了年龄和居住地外,没有其他原因。显然,这为学生提供了他们在其他任何地方都找不到的经验,并使他们能够建立良好而真正的友谊。)”可知,造成青少年时期的真挚友谊的原因在于相似的年龄和共同的居住地。故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“It is worth mentioning that while students need to concentrate mainly on their grades and behavior, they shouldn’t fall into the common trap of caring too much.(值得一提的是,虽然学生需要主要关注自己的成绩和行为,但他们不应该陷入过于关心的常见陷阱。)”

A new study with teens in a high school theater program showed how positive feelings can push them to work hard. Students also learned ways to deal with their own and others’ bad feelings. The researchers interviewed students in this three-month theater program. This study showed how theater programs can support the development of teens’ ability to understand feelings.
Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign started open-ended interviews to get a good understanding of one setting — a high school theater program. Ten teenagers were interviewed every two weeks over a three-month period while the theater group prepared a musical.
The program provided a culture that helped them learn to deal well with the events and feelings connected to these different emotions. The adults set good examples for teens and helped them learn good ways to control strong feelings.
The theater setting supported this process (过程) by putting the youth in situations where strong feelings may appear because hard work brought stress. Also, strong feelings were accepted and discussed openly with a culture of caring about others.
“The development of ‘emotional intelligence’ (情商) is important to adult work and family life, but many young people arrive in adulthood with bad emotional skills,” according to Reed W. Larson, the study’s lead author. “Our research findings suggest how, under the right conditions, teenagers learn these skills. Although further research is needed, youth programs, such as the theater program, along with schools that provide these conditions may lead to better emotional intelligence.”
12. What did the new study find?
A. Theater programs are popular among high schools.
B. Doing theater helps teenagers deal with their moods.
C. Emotional skills are important to student success.
D. High school teaching is a performing art.
13. How did the researchers get information for the study?
A. By holding interviews. B. By preparing a musical.
C. By teaching at the local school. D. By reviewing students’ performances.
14. What can we say about the adults in the theater program?
A. They experienced the same emotions as the teens.
B. They were close observers of the program.
C. They provided models for the students.
D. They were in control of the new study.
15. What is Reed W. Larson’s attitude towards the theater program?
A. Doubtful. B. Curious. C. Worried. D. Supportive.
B 13. A 14. C 15. D

A. Doubtful. B. Curious. C. Worried. D. Supportive.
