But some raise oysters to clean up the polluted seawater. Amy, a 15-year-old girl, is one of them. She has won a master oyster gardener prize this year. She thinks oysters are really helpful. They are environmental stars. “I knew nothing about oyster gardening when I started in 2022. I learned all of this after I completed a free course about it. The course is about raising oysters in cages (笼子),” Amy says. There used to be lots of oysters in coastal waters. But their numbers have diminished. This is mainly because of some natural disasters. Oyster gardening is a way to help. “Anyone can join,” an oyster gardening researcher Liz Black says. “You don’t have to do a lot to take care of your oysters, but the influence they have on the environment is huge,” Amy says. During the oyster gardening season, Amy and her mom go to the beach. There Amy has nine cages. “Once a week I go out there,” she says. She pulls the cages from the water to check conditions of the oysters. This spring, Amy’s oysters will be big enough to be collected. Amy will go with Liz to pick them up. Oysters that are collected will then be “planted” on the reefs (珊瑚礁). So far, Amy has raised more than 1,500 oysters. She’s a great leader of oyster gardening and a great supporter, too. 1.What does Amy think of oysters? A.Huge. B.Clean. C.Helpful. D.Delicious. 2.When did Amy get to know about raising oysters? It was also Miss Caroline’s first day as a teacher. She began the day by reading us a story about cats. Then she started to teach us the letters. When Miss Caroline discovered that I could read and write, she said, “Tell your father not to teach you anymore. It’s best to begin reading and writing with a fresh mind.” After supper that night, Atticus sat down with the paper and called, “Scout, ready to read?” I told Atticus I didn’t feel very well and didn’t think I’d go to school anymore if it was all right with him. “You never went to school and you do all right, so I’ll just stay home too. You can teach me as Granddaddy taught you.” “No, I can’t,” said Atticus. “I have to make a living. Besides, they’d put me in prison (监狱) if I left you at home. Now what’s the matter?” I told him what happened at school. “Miss Caroline said you taught me all wrong, so we can’t ever read any more. Please don’t send me back, please, sir.” “First of all,” he said, “if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of people. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view—” “Sir?” “—until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” Atticus continued, “You learned many things today. Miss Caroline learned several things herself. We could not expect her to learn all our ways in one day, and we should understand her when she knew no better.” “But if I keep on going to school, we can’t ever read any more…” “That’s really worrying you, isn’t it?” “Yes, sir.” When Atticus looked at me, I saw the look on his face that always made me expect something. “Do you know what a compromise (折中办法) is?” he asked. “Breaking the law?” “No, an agreement. It works this way,” he said. “If you promise to go to school, we’ll go on reading every night as usual. Is it OK?” “Yes sir!” 1.What happened to Scout on her first day at school? A.She was not able to read the letters. B.She lost interest in reading and writing. C.She couldn’t follow Caroline in class. As you can imagine, there were a lot of complaints (抱怨) from my kids, but I refused to change my opinion. For the whole week, no one in the family used smart phones. At first, I worried about my decision. Because I couldn’t send messages to my friends and I would not be connected to the rest of the world. However, our holiday without smart phones was wonderful. In our opinion, we enjoyed our holiday without being distracted (使分心) by smart phones. It was worth it. This summer, our holiday place had free Wi-Fi. After the first day, it became clear that my kids didn’t communicate with the family and they missed all the family activities. With eyes looking at the screens of smart phones, they never found the beauty around them. I tried to see it from their point of view. I recalled when I was a teenager, how I missed my friends when I was on family holidays. I know how important friends are to teenagers. So I wanted my kids to be able to keep in touch with their friends while enjoying our holiday. Maybe, for them, a holiday means using their phones whenever they want. I am not sure what the right answer is because I have nothing to compare it with. Honestly, the family trip without our phones felt more like a holiday to me. Now I am planning it for next year. At that time, he showed an interest in gu feng music. It mixes traditional Chinese singing with pop. “I really like how they sing in these songs. It made me want to learn Peking Opera,” Zhang said. It was hard at first, but he practiced every day and never gave up. In 2021, Zhang went to a university in Wuhan. The hot and dry weather there made his voice sound tired and he had difficulty singing. So he started to learn a special Peking Opera skill called qiaogong. The skill requires actors to wear high-heeled shoes and balance on their toes (踮着脚). Sometimes, they have to jump on chairs or move around! “At first, just standing on the ground was difficult,” Zhang said. “I fell many times, but I drilled day by day. Finally, it became easier.” It was this skill that gave Zhang the idea to turn Hulu Xiao Jin Gang into a Peking Opera show. A group of Americans who taught English in other countries recently discussed their experience. They thought that miscommunications (沟通误解) were always possible, even over something as simple as “yes” and “no”. On her first day in Micronesia, an island in the Pacific, it was hot, and Lisa went into a store and asked, “Do you have cold drinks?” The woman there didn’t say anything. Lisa repeated the question. Still the woman said nothing. She later learned that the woman had answered her: She had raised her eyebrows (眉毛), which in Micronesia means “yes”. Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria, a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant. It was known for its cabbage. She asked the waiter, “Do you have cabbage today?” He nodded his head. Jan waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a nod means “no”. Tom had a similar problem when he arrived in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the head. He thought some people had not understood, so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same thing. He soon found out that his students did understand. In India, people nod and shake their heads in different ways depending on where they come from. No card ever came with it. Calls to the flower shop were not helpful at all. After some time, I stopped trying to find out the sender’s name and was just pleased with the beautiful flower, in soft pink paper. I couldn’t stop imagining who the giver might be. Some of my happiest moments were spent daydreaming about the sender. My mother encouraged these daydreams. She’d ask me if I had been especially kind to someone. Perhaps it was one of my classmates. Perhaps it was the old man who I once helped. As a girl, I had more fun imagining that it might be a boy that I had met. A month before my high school graduation (毕业), my father died. I was so sad that I became completely uninterested in my coming graduation dance, and I didn’t care whether I had a new dress or not. My mother, in her own sadness, would not let me miss any of those things. She wanted her children to feel loved. We learn, work and relax by using phones, computers, iPads, AI robots and so on. Now, let’s see what’s going on in Julie’s life. Julie usually wakes up at the ring of a mobile phone. Then, she eats her breakfast with a video on the phone. When she gets to her company, she deals with the business on the computer. And she often downloads (下载) and stores things that she needs on her iPad. When she needs something, she can just turn on the iPad and search for it. She carries the iPad wherever she is on business because it’s light and convenient. When she is at home in the evening, she uses a smart AI chat robot to write her projects. She only needs to type in some key words and then she can get some ideas in a second. It can make her use less time to do more things. In the late evening, she always falls asleep to the soft music from Xiaodu. Julie lives with technology, and so do we. However, technology brings us some problems at the same time. Staring at screens too much is bad for our eyes. Many of us are near-sighted or have other eye problems. AI is making some of us unwilling to think and explore on our own. We may copy ideas from AI robots. We may even like chatting in the virtual (虚拟的) world better because of so many chat robots. So, I think that technology is a double-sided sword (双刃剑). We should use technology correctly and wisely to make our life colorful and convenient. 1.What does Julie probably do? A.She is a student. B.She is a writer. C.She is a manager. I loved nothing better than driving our family truck to do something, but this time I was not so happy because my father had told me I would have to ask for credit (赊账) at the store. Sixteen is a proud age. Young men at that age want respect but not charity. I had seen many times that my friends were refused when they asked for credit. We lived in a poor village, where money was seriously needed. I knew clearly how difficult it might be to make the store owner believe me and get the credit. At the Davys’ Brothers store, Buck Davy was talking to a farmer. After I finished choosing the things I wanted, I walked over to him. “I need to put these on credit,” I said to him carefully. The farmer gave me a kind look, but Buck’s face didn’t change in the slightest. “No problem,” he said in a relaxed voice. “I know your daddy will pay for them in time.” Then he turned to the farmer, “This boy is James Williams’ son.” The farmer nodded to me in a friendly way. I was so proud of my father. “James Williams’ son”—these three words opened the door to these adults’ respect and trust. That day I discovered the importance of having a good name. My father’s good name had won our neighbors’ respect for our family. That good name and the responsibility that came with it encouraged us to be better than we might be. We also wanted to be regarded as good people. By acting like good people for a long time, we became good out of good habits. 1.What did the writer’s father ask him to do? A.To drive a truck. B.To buy some tools. C.To ask for money. D.To get some help. 2.Why was it difficult to ask for credit? A.Because the writer’s father didn’t have any money. B.Because the writer was only sixteen. C.Because the store owners didn’t trust them. D.Because it was difficult to make money in that poor village. 3.How did the writer feel about his task at first? A.He was embarrassed. B.He felt happy about it. C.He was relaxed. D.He was proud of it. 4.Why was the writer proud of his father? A.Because his father trusted him and gave him a task to do. B.Because his father opened a door for him. C.Because his father was Buck Davy’s brother. D.Because his father had won the neighbor’s respect for his family. 5.What can be inferred from the passage? A.The writer would go to college after high school. B.Buck knew the writer’s father very well. C.It was easy to get people’s trust in that small village. D.People didn’t trust one another at that time. 【答案】1.B 2.D 3.A 4.D 5.B 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,讲述作者高中时赊账买农具的经历,因父亲的好名声顺利办成事,让他领悟到好名声与责任感的重要性。 1.细节理解题。根据“my father gave me a task to buy some tools for our farm.”可知,父亲让作者买一些工具,故选B。 2.细节理解题。根据“We lived in a poor village, where money was seriously needed. Because of this love, he decided to work with his friends to turn a famous Chinese cartoon, Hulu Xiao Jin Gang, into a Peking Opera show. Zhang’s love for Peking Opera began in high school. He thought Qiaogong would be perfect for showing the movements of the snake character from the cartoon. You have to know where a person is from to understand whether they mean “yes” or “no”. 1.What do we know about these Americans in the text? A.They went abroad for vacations. B.They often discussed their experiences. C.They needed to learn foreign languages. D.They had problems with communication. 2.How do people in Micronesia show “yes”? A.By nodding heads. B.By raising eyebrows. C.By shaking heads. D.By saying“no”. 3.Why did Tom misunderstand his class at first? A.He didn’t know much about Indian culture. B.He didn’t explain everything clearly enough. C.Some students didn’t speak English. D.He didn’t know where the students came from. 4.What is the best title for the text? A.body Language in foreign restaurants B.class discussion in Indian Schools C.Miscommunications in different cultures D.English Teaching in other countries Anvitha Vijay, nine, has created many educational apps. She went to workshops where she learned about the latest software such as Sketch for app building. All that training led to an idea for a third app: This one, called GoalsHi, helps kids to practice good habits. Users are rewarded (奖励) for achieving goals, such as eating their vegetables or practicing the piano. Anvitha says the rewards are like getting a sticker (贴纸) for a job that they do well. “Kids can set goals with this app and get stars when they achieve them,” she says. “The idea is to e... kids to achieve one little step a day.” Anvitha’s goal is to continue creating apps that help kids learn while having fun. But even more important to her is that the world sees the power of technology in kids’ hands. “The more training we get in technology at an early age,” she says, “the better chance we have of becoming a person who will one day change the world.” 1.Which of the following is TRUE about Anvitha Vijay? In fact, my mother wanted her children to see themselves much like the gardenia: lovely, strong and perfect. My mother died ten years after I was married. That was the year the gardenia stopped coming. 1.How did the writer feel when she was imagining who sent the flower? A.Sad. B.Happy. C.Worried. Yu Zidi, a 13-year-old swimmer born in Baoding, Hebei, has become a new star in the swimming world. Her latest achievement at the 15th National Games made her famous—she won the women’s 200m individual medley (个人混合泳) and set a new Asian record of 2:07.41. Yu’s love for swimming started at six. On a hot summer day, her dad took her to a water park in Baoding. She loved playing in the water so much that a coach noticed her talent and invited her to join the swimming club. Since then, she has kept a strict schedule (时间表): waking up at 5 a. m. every day for training, practicing 4 to 6 hours after school. Her hard work led to golds at the 2025 National Swimming Championships and places at the World Aquatics Championships (世界游泳锦标赛) in Singapore. What makes Yu special is her balance between studies and swimming. As a middle school student, she never falls behind in class. When she’s away for competitions, she takes online classes during breaks. “I finish homework before training and review for an hour after coming back,” she said. Her teachers praise her: “She’s focused in class and uses time wisely, setting a good example for her classmates.” Staying modest after breaking the Asian record, Yu stated, “I’m not a genius (天才), every progress comes from repeated practice.” Coach Li Chao noted, “She is always first to arrive at the pool and last to leave. Her perseverance (毅力) is beyond her age.” This young girl from Hebei shows us that passion and self-discipline (自律) can lead to great achievements. As she continues to swim forward, Yu Zidi is proving that young people can shine in both dreams and studies. 1.What did Yu Zidi achieve at the 15th National Games? They had never been to a concert because their parents didn’t allow them to go there until they were in the sixth grade. They were only in the fifth grade. “Please, Mom and Dad. We will do anything if you let us go,” they begged (祈求) their parents. After about a week’s time, their parents agreed. But they made some conditions. “First, work very hard and get an A on your next book report. Second, pay for the concert tickets yourselves. Third, find an adult to go to the concert with you because Mom and I will have a charity dinner (慈善晚宴) that night.” Alice and Amanda smiled at each other because they could easily meet the first two conditions. The only problem was the third one. Suddenly they looked across the table at the oldest sister Andrea who was 18 years old. Andrea could drive them to the concert. The day of the concert finally arrived. When they got to the concert, the three sisters had the seats with the best view. Then the music began. The Spring Festival is Li Ming’s favourite holiday. Every year, his relatives come to visit them and they have great fun together. But this year, a heavy snow hit just before the festival. The roads were closed and nobody could come. “The Spring Festival is ruined (毁坏),” Li Ming said, feeling down. Then Li Ming and his family went outside to clear the snow. They met some of their neighbors. “I was planning to celebrate with my daughter in the city,” said Grandma Liu, shaking her head. “I made dumplings, but I’m all alone.” “My son was coming home,” Mr. Chen said. “I prepared fish for him, but now it seems wasted.” Suddenly, Li Ming got an idea. After discussing with his parents, he shouted, “We have New Year cake! Let’s celebrate the New Year right here together!” The neighbors gladly accepted.
