Ludwig van Beethoven, a famous composer born over 250 years ago, is known worldwide for his nine symphonies. Before his death, he started writing his 10th Symphony but never finished it. In 2021, a team of musicians, AI experts and historians used artificial intelligence (AI) (人工智能) to complete this unfinished work.
The project organized by Deutsche Telekom began in 2019 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. The team trained an AI system with all of Beethoven’s music and works by other composers he admired. They also studied Beethoven’s notes to guess his ideas for the symphony. After over two years of work, the AI helped finish the music.
On October 9, 2021, the Beethoven Orchestra in Bonn, Germany, performed the AI-completed symphony for the first time. The concert was streamed live online for free, and a recording called Beethoven X—The AI Project was released the same day.
People had mixed reactions. Some praised the music as creative and exciting. Tim Hottges, a supporter, said, “Humans and machines created something new together!” However, others questioned: “Can AI-made music be called real art?” This debate (争论) made people think about how technology and creativity can work together.

A.Choose the best answer.
You probably know you should say “please” and “thank you” at restaurants. You probably know the rules of a library. You know you should respect and be nice to your classmates. But do you have music manners?
Keep It Down! You have to notice the volume of your music. You should not play your music so loud that everyone around you can hear it. Some people might even get angry. Usually, when you play the music loud on an MP3 player, other people can’t hear the words of the song. They just hear a loud sound. No one wants to listen to this. Very loud music can also be bad for your cars, so even if you are alone when listening to our MP3 player, you shouldn’t have it turned up too high.
Take Them off! You need to know when to turn your MP3 player off and put it away. Libraries and schools don’t allow MP3 players. There are other places, like museums, that don't have rules, but is would be rude to have your MP3 player on. Sometimes, it just doesn’t make sense to listen your MP3 player at event. Why would you listen to music at a play, a movie or a sporting event? You would miss what is going on and others would wonder why you even came.
Take One Out! Once in a while it’s okay just to take out one earphone and not the other. Imagine you are listening your MP3 player when someone asks you the way. It would not be rude to take out one earphone, tell him the way, and put back the earphone and continue listening. You can also do this when you order food at a fast-food restaurant or when you answer the telephone and it’s not for you.
It’s Your Choice! There are times when you need to decide what is best. For example, some people can listen to music on their MP3 Players when read books, while others think it is disturbing. In cases like this, you need to do what seems right for you.

A.the theatre won’t allow it B.the actor will get angry
C.others won’t hear the play well D.we will miss part of the play

Artificial intelligence (AI) can do many different things. From controlling the lights in our homes to helping us order pizzas, it seems there aren’t many more uses for AI than we already have. However, can AI make music like human beings?
Thanks to a team of Swiss scientists, AI may soon be able to come up with music especially for us. Researchers at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland have created a computer algorithm (算法), the “Deep Artificial Composer” (DAC), which can create original music all by itself.
Florian Colombo, an EPFL scientist who helped create the DAC, said that AI could produce complete melodies (旋律), with a beginning and an end.
At present, the DAC is only able to produce several pieces of traditional Irish folk music, but it’s hoped that it will be able to create songs based on any type of music in the end.
To “teach” the DAC, the scientists trained it to “listen” to over 2,000 different folk songs. Based on this input (输入), the AI taught itself how to compose music, from getting the pitch (高音) and timing right, to choosing the right notes.
This process is still in its early stages, with the DAC still not producing perfect results, but Colombo told AFP that the AI’s music is still “quite pleasant to listen to.”
While the idea sounds very hopeful, we shouldn’t expect the DAC to replace real-life composers any time soon. According to Colombo, the system was designed to produce only simple melodies. So far, it can only create songs based on a single instrument.
Colombo said that his purpose in creating the DAC was to help people create their own music, not to have it made for them. His exciting new ideas came from Austrian composer Wolfgang Mozart. It’s said that he used to throw dice (掷骰子) to help him pick which notes to use when making new music.
“A good composer with creative ideas will never be replaced by an algorithm.” Colombo told AFP.
1.What can be learned from the first two paragraphs?
A.AI has been used in more places than we already know.
B.AI has already composed music for people.
C.DAC was created by a group of scientists in Switzerland.
D.DAC was refused by some composers.
2.What does the underlined word “itself” refer to?
A.A robot. B.The EPFL. C.A composer. D.The DAC.
3.According to the passage, we can infer that the scientists _________.
A.expect the DAC to replace good composers B.are amazed at the melodies made by the DAC
C.are not satisfied with the system of the DAC D.have achieved their purpose of creating the DAC
4.Which is the best title for this passage?
A.Colombo Helped Create the DAC B.AI Composers VS Human Composers
C.AI—A Good Assistant for Composers D.The DAC Changes the Way of Composing
根据“Researchers at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland have created a computer algorithm (算法), the ‘Deep Artificial Composer’ (DAC)”可知,是瑞士的研究人员创造的DAC。故选C。
根据“Researchers at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland have created a computer algorithm (算法), the ‘Deep Artificial Composer’ (DAC), which can create original music all by itself.”
根据“Colombo said that his purpose in creating the DAC was to help people create their own music, not to have it made for them…It’s said that he used to throw dice (掷骰子) to help him pick which notes to use when making new music.”
Does the music we listen to affect us in one way or another? The following questions and answers may give us some ideas.
CAN MUSIC HELP US SLEEP?
Obviously, yes! In a study, music was shown to cure insomnia (the condition of being unable to sleep). Over 80% of the people taking part in the study became better sleepers after three weeks of listening to classical music at bedtime. In another study, half of the people over the age of 60 who had difficulty falling asleep reported that they became good sleepers after a few weeks. So, if you’re battling to fall asleep, make yourself a 45-minute playlist of slow, calming music.
CAN IT TAKE PAIN AWAY?
Well, maybe not totally, but music has been shown to help us feel better. One experiment asked people to hold their hands in freezing cold water. The people who were listening to music could handle the pain for longer, especially if they got to choose the music themselves. The same was found at dentists’ rooms-patients felt less pain if they got to choose the music they listened to.
CAN MUSIC MAKE US ACT DIFFERENTLY?
For sure! Think about the music you hear when you’re at the shops or at a restaurant. Studies show that playing slow music at a restaurant makes you eat slower. The pace of music in a shopping center determines (decides on) how fast people walk-you take more time to browse (look at things in a shop) if the music is calmer. Some studies have even shown that music can influence what you buy. One test done by psychologists in England in 1999 changed the background music near displays of German and French wines. When they played German music, the German wine sold twice as much. When French music was used, the French wine sold five times better!
1.Music affects us in many ways except in _______.
A.sleep B.study C.senses D.behaviour
2.________ music may help people who have problems in falling asleep.
A.Loud B.Dance C.Classical D.Pop
3.The underlined word “handle” is closest in meaning to ________.
A.keep off B.break down C.focus on D.deal with
4.From the third question and answer, we can learn that _______.
A.fast music make people eat more B.loud music is popular in the shopping center
C.German wines sell better than French wines D.music can change our way of eating and shopping
5.The text above is written to ________.
A.tell people how to create music B.describe different kinds of music
C.introduce the effect of music D.test people’s understanding of music
6.In which section of a magazine can you find this text?
A.Book club. B.Science discovery. C.World travel. D.Big debate.
【答案】1.B 2.C 3.D 4.D 5.C 6.B
根据“CAN MUSIC HELP US SLEEP? Obviously, yes!”可知,音乐能帮助我们入睡;根据“CAN IT TAKE PAIN AWAY? Well, maybe not totally, but music has been shown to help us feel better.” 根据“CAN MUSIC MAKE US ACT DIFFERENTLY? For sure!”
根据“Over 80% of the people taking part in the study became better sleepers after three weeks of listening to classical music at bedtime. ”可知,参加这项研究的人中,超过80%的人在睡前听了三周古典音乐后,睡眠状况变好了。故选C。
3.词义猜测题。根据下文“The same was found at dentists’ rooms-patients felt less pain if they got to choose the music they listened to.”
根据“Studies show that playing slow music at a restaurant makes you eat slower. The pace of music in a shopping center determines (decides on) how fast people walk-you take more time to browse (look at things in a shop) if the music is calmer.”
通读全文,尤其是根据“Does the music we listen to affect us in one way or another? The following questions and answers may give us some ideas.”
通读全文,尤其是根据“Does the music we listen to affect us in one way or another? The following questions and answers may give us some ideas.”

1.The underlined word “volume” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”.
A.the type of music B.the amount of a sound
C.the length of a song D.the colour of an MP3 player
