One tap of my stick, and the buffalo (水牛) moved forward. I guided them along the road. We walked past mud homes and villagers working on their crops. This was life in a small village in Sindh, Pakistan.
Months flew by as I watched over the buffalo daily until Uncle visited. “Brother, you must send Rasool Bux to school. Herding buffalo is not in his future,” Uncle said. My father was persuaded finally. The following week, I started primary school. By the end of the year, I was among the top students in the school and determined to study at a university in Karachi. a big city over 150 kilometers away. “Look at this guy! He will go to study in Karachi?” My classmates teased.
The challenges set before me didn’t weaken my determination. I turned to writing as a way out. I got published and won competitions, gaining recognition and confidence to keep moving forward.
I began college studies when I was hit with another roadblock. My father couldn’t afford my tuition (学费). With good handwriting and a passion for calligraphy, I got a part-time job at a leading daily newspaper. One fine day, I took a bus to Hyderabad alone, a city fifty kilometers from my village. Guided by kind strangers, I presented my calligraphy skills at the newspaper’s counter and was offered a paid internship—one of the happiest days of my life. Within a year, under the guidance of senior calligraphers, my skills improved, along with a good salary.
Blessings kept pouring in—I got an editorial position, advertising work, and the most wonderful milestone of all, an MBA in marketing and advertising from a Karachi university.
Now, when I reflect on the laughter and doubtful glances of the village classmates, their opinions hold no weight. What truly matters is that I have been following my dreams and struggling for them. The very stick that once herded the buffalo along the village paths now stands as a symbol of never quitting— to guide my life’s course through every challenge that comes my way.

Pumpkins are popular symbols of autumn: When pumpkin spice lattes appear, we know summer is ending. After enjoying pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving, we soon prepare for winter holidays. In between, jack-o’-lanterns become the stars of Halloween. These seasonal vegetables also make us think of simpler times and the charm of small family farms. As one historian notes, “People are buying these things because of these very old-fashioned ideas.”
The word “pumpkin” has an interesting journey. It didn't always refer to a specific plant, but more to a shape of squash. While the word itself has European roots, the plant’s true home is the Americas. Thousands of years ago, native people in Mexico began farming different types of squash that looked like what we now call pumpkins. When European settlers arrived, they found pumpkins a useful food source, easy to grow and store.
However, the word “pumpkin” also has a surprising past. Not long after it first appeared in English in the 1600s, it became a way to insult people. For women, it was often used to suggest they were driven by natural desires rather than wisdom. For men, it meant they were empty-headed, a term even used for politicians for centuries. By the late 1600s, calling someone a “pumpkin” meant they were conceited or stupid.
Fortunately, by the late 19th century, the meaning of “pumpkin” began to change. It became a sweet term of affection for children. As more Americans moved from farms to cities, pumpkins also became an influential symbol of traditional country life, connecting people to an idealized past. Today, this cultural history continues to grow. Small farmers use pumpkins to create inviting “agrarian wonderlands” that draw visitors, helping to develop the very small family farms they represent.
8. What does “old-fashioned ideas” in Paragraph 1 suggest?
A. People expect to enjoy pies.
B. People prefer connection to traditions.
C. Pumpkins are a must-have decoration for Halloween.
D. Pumpkins are favourite seasonal vegetables.
9. Which place is the pumpkin native to?
A. Europe. B. Mexico. C. Americas. D. Britain.
10. What does the underlined word “insult” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Speak highly of. B. Show no respect to.
C. Pay no attention to. D. Take control of.
11. How is the passage mainly organized?
A. By comparing pumpkins’ wide uses in different nations.
B. By listing pumpkin cooking ways in the history.
C. By explaining causes and effects of pumpkins’ popularity.
D. By following pumpkins’ historical progression and meaning changes.
D
Climate change is quietly reshaping our food, even affecting the cheese on our tables. Researchers have found that changes in cows’ diets, driven by a warming climate, can change cheese’s taste color and nutritional value. This is particularly true for cheeses like Cantal, a traditional French product.
Traditionally, cows in regions like Auvergne, France, eat local grass. However, severe droughts (干旱), increasingly common due to climate change, force many dairy farmers to seek other feeds, such as corn, for their cows. Animal scientist Matthieu Bouchon and his team conducted a study to understand how these dietary changes affect dairy products.
For nearly five months, Bouchon’s team created drought conditions artificially, adding different amounts of corn to the cows’ grass food. They carefully analyzed milk samples, checking their fatty acid and protein profiles, which are important for cheese quality. The study revealed some interesting findings. A corn-based diet did not affect milk production and even led to a reduction in methane gas from cows. However, cheese from grass-fed cows was richer and more tasty. More importantly, it contained higher levels of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids and beneficial probiotics (益生菌). Therefore, to keep cheese quality, producers should include fresh vegetation in corn-based food.
Experts also note that warmer climates directly affect cows’ health. High temperatures can make cows eat less. To deal with the heat, cows use their nutrients to cool down, in which case staying healthy becomes a problem. In response, dairy producers worldwide are adapting. Some are raising cows indoors instead of feeding them outdoors to keep them comfortable. Others are experimenting with different feed mixes to ensure milk quality.
As Bouchon stated, “If climate change progresses the way it’s going, we’ll feel it in our cheese.” This highlights the urgent need for sustainable practices to protect our environment as well as the quality of the food we enjoy.
12. Why are dairy farmers changing the way to feed cows?
A. To change cheese’s taste. B. To reduce production costs.
C. To adapt to frequent droughts. D. To improve cheese’s nutritional value.
13. What can we conclude from Bouchon’s study?
A. Droughts result in great losses in the dairy economy.
B. Dietary changes increased milk production greatly.
C. Adding grass to cows’ feed plays a key role in cheese’s quality.
D. Only corn-based food can raise the levels of probiotics in the cheese.
14. What is Bouchon’s attitude towards the impact of climate change on cheese?
A. Concerned. B. Disappointed. C. Confident. D. Positive.
15. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. The Secret of French Cheese Making
B. How Climate Change Is Reaching Our Plates
C. Corn vs Grass: Which Is Better for Cows?
D. Sustainable Practices in the Dairy Industry

Looking Back and Moving Forward
This term, I was faced with two major challenges: poor time management and heavy study pressure. I often stayed up late to finish homework and felt stressed, which affected my efficiency and mood.
To solve the problem, I made a detailed daily schedule and divided big tasks into small ones. Besides, I took short breaks to relax, which helped me refresh my mind and improve my study efficiency. And I also talked to teachers and friends when upset. Gradually, I became more organized and positive.
This experience taught me that challenges are chances to grow. I am confident that I can face future difficulties bravely and make steady progress in the new term.
