A big clean-up has begun in Jamaica, an island in the Caribbean, after it was hit by Hurricane Melissa on 28 October. The storm killed at least 32 people and caused severe damage and flooding.
What is a hurricane?
Hurricanes are powerful storms that form over the northern Atlantic Ocean and the northeast Pacific, with winds of at least 74 mph. They form when warm, moist air rises from the ocean, causing surrounding cooler air to swirl in. There are five categories of hurricane, ranging from 1 to 5 in severity, with Category 5 (winds≥156 mph) causing disastrous damage that forces people to leave their homes.
Which other countries were affected?
After hitting Jamaica, Hurricane Melissa weakened to a Category 3 and moved to Cuba. It also affected the Bahamas, Bermuda, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. No deaths have been reported in Cuba but 43 people died in Haiti and at least 2 died in the Dominican Republic. Nearly six million people across the Caribbean were affected.
How did people help out?
The UN World Food Programme delivered food kits to 1,500 people, with 2,000 more underway. However, the storm blocked roads and railways in some areas, posing great challenges to aid delivery. Several European countries sent support. Jamaica’s Prime Minister said “recovery will take time”, but added “the government is working to restore normalcy quickly”.
1. What is the minimum wind speed of a hurricane?
A. 39 mph. B. 74 mph. C. 156 mph. D. 185 mph.
2. Which country suffered the most deaths in the hurricane?
A. Jamaica. B. Cuba.
C. Haiti. D. The Dominican Republic.

Rachel Cooke was a journalist who wrote about almost any topic with admirable insights. Yet she repeatedly returned to two core subjects which owed as much to her grandmother as to her Oxford education.
One was the pleasure of food, explored in her column The Observer. Her love of eating traced back to her grandmother, Grammy Goodson’s kitchen genius. Cooke’s food writing embraced everything from a humble bacon sandwich to an elegant souffle. The other everlasting theme was the lives of women who braved all challenges. Her 2013 book, Her Brilliant Career, recovered ten pioneering female stories from the 1950s, described by critic Victoria Gray as “a vivid, insightful, affectionate page-turner”. Cooke also edited The Virago Book of Friendship, exploring female friendship through the works of over 100 women writers.
As a cultural polymath (博学家), Cooke wrote books and art reviews, and served as a TV critic. She was also a celebrated interviewer, winning “Interviewer of the Year” at the British Press Awards in 2012.
Born in Sheffield, in northern England in 1968, Cooke spent several childhood years in Israel after her father taught at Tel Aviv University. She later wrote sharply about the cultural division between northern and southern England, reflecting that she still “understood the world from the viewpoint of the north”.
Her colleague Robin Morgan recalled her fearlessness and humour — whether dressed as a film star for a premiere (首映) or wearing odd outfits on the Internet to document public reactions. He compared her to Victoria Wood in her ability to “find humour in the ordinary”.
Even after she was diagnosed with cancer, Cooke continued to write with humor and jokes. “I’m a writer: for me everything is material,” she noted. Rachel Cooke passed away in 2023, leaving a legacy of courage, curiosity and fascinating writing.
4. What were the two main themes in Cooke’s works?
A. Diverse recipes and TV criticism.
B. Delicious food and tough women.
C. Oxford learning and her grandma.
D. Northern culture and female friendship.
5. What can we learn about Cooke’s life experiences from the passage?
A. She spoke up for women’s equal rights.
B. She won a national award for interviews.
C She spent most of her childhood in Israel.
D. She learned to write about food from her grandma.
6. What do Cooke’s words imply in the last paragraph?
A. Writing is in her blood. B. Health is second to none.
C. Personal stories matter most. D. Humor can defeat illnesses.
7. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To praise the use of humor in literary writing.
B. To stress family’s crucial influence on career.
C. To promote books about extraordinary women.
D. To introduce a distinguished journalist and writer.

Scientists have made a breakthrough in vision restoration by inserting tiny electronic chips into the back of patients’ eyes. The chips measure just two millimetres wide — about the thickness of a grain of rice.
A trial involved 38 patients with an eye disease called age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It mostly affects older people and makes the centre of their vision unclear. About 600,000 people in the UK have AMD.
The trial took place at 17 hospitals in five European countries, including the UK. The patients had a type of AMD called “dry AMD”, which damages cells at the back of the eyes that detect light. Those cells transform light into electrical signals for the brain to process vision. When the cells are damaged, people can’t see properly. Currently, there is no cure.
The tiny “bionic” chips can give people back some sight. Bionic means a man-made object that acts as a body part. The patients get a pair of glasses with a built-in video camera and a small pocket sized black box that processes the data.
When the patients wear the glasses and look at something, the camera captures images and sends the data to the black box, which makes the images clearer. By using infrared signals (红外信号), the information is sent wirelessly to the chip beneath the patients’ retina (视网膜). This chip relays signals through the optic nerve to the brain, which requires some training to understand the images they see.
Patients can only see in black and white, but it has greatly elevated the lives of those treated. Seventy-year-old Sheila Irvine was one patient who took part in the trial. She is registered as blind, but now can read books and do crosswords. “It is amazing,” she said in an interview. “I am one happy bunny.”
“Blind patients are actually able to have meaningful central vision restoration, which has never been done before,” noted Mahi Mugit, an associate professor at University College London, commenting on the trial’s outcomes.
8. What is the effect of “dry AMD”?
A. It results in complete vision loss. B. It mainly impacts young adults.
C. It blocks any signal to the brain. D. It harms light-detecting function.
9. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A. How the entire system works. B. Why infrared signals are used.
C. When patients train their brains. D. What makes up the electronic chip.
10. What does the underlined word “elevated” in paragraph 6 probably mean?
A. Restricted. B. Disturbed. C. Extended. D. Improved.
11. What is Mahi Mugit’s attitude towards the new device?
A. Indifferent. B. Doubtful. C. Optimistic. D. Critical.

For many years scientists have believed that modern humans split off (分化) from their earlier ancestors between 500,000 and 700,000 years ago. After reexamining and digitally reconstructing a broken skull (颅骨) found in China, however, researchers are challenging this belief. They now think modern humans may trace back to more than a million years ago.
Homo sapiens (modern humans) share a common ancestor with Neanderthals and Denisovans, two species of early humans with large brains. At some point in the past, these three species split off from one another, and Homo sapiens are the only ones that did not go extinct. Figuring out exactly when the species split off has been difficult.
The skull, Yunxian 2, was first found in 1990 in central China and is about a million years old. Yunxian 2 was partly damaged, but based on its age, scientists decided it belonged to a species called Homo erectus, one of the first human ancestors to walk on two legs.
For the new study, a team of scientists in China and the UK used high-resolution 3D scanning and computer modeling to virtually rebuild Yunxian 2. The final model they created had a larger brain case (the part of the skull that holds the brain) and a narrower space between the eye sockets than Homo erectus. This led the team to conclude that Yunxian 2 was not Homo erectus. Instead, it belonged to a group of early human ancestors called Homo longi, which included the Denisovans.
Using Yunxian 2 as a reference point, the scientists proposed a new Homo family tree and determined that the Denisovans were the extinct human species that was most closely related to Homo sapiens. This, they said, meant that if the Denisovans split off at least a million years ago, so did Homo sapiens — about 400,000 years earlier than previously thought.
Scientists who were not involved in the study expressed skepticism about its findings. But Chris Stringer, an anthropologist (人类学家) and an author of the study, said he and his colleagues would continue their research and would work to gather more evidence to support their new theory.
12. Why are three human species mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To compare their brain sizes. B. To list all human ancestors.
C. To explain a research challenge. D. To show their living regions.
13. How did the researchers reassess the Yunxian 2 skull?
A. By creating a virtual model. B. By analyzing the soil layers.
C. By restoring the broken pieces. D. By discussing it with other specialists.
14. What did the new study find according to the passage?
A. Homo longi is the earliest human ancestor.
B. Homo sapiens split off earlier than thought.
C. Yunxian 2 was confirmed as part of Homo erectus.
D. Neanderthals are loosely linked to Homo sapiens.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. New Technology Reconstructs Ancient Fossils
B. Scientists Argue about the Human Family Tree
C. The Denisovan Link: Our Closest Ancient Relative
D. The Discovery of a Skull: Rewriting Human Origins

The apartment above Penny’s beauty salon (沙龙) was often empty. Kenzie, the salon owner’s daughter, had lived there during college rent-free, but once she graduated, she moved in with her three dogs. However, the salon owner, Penny, wouldn’t allow pets in the apartment: “Just think of what those women would think if they saw a dog running through the salon, Kenzie. They’d never trust the cleanliness of the business again.” That is what Penny told her daughter. So after her daughter Kenzie moved out, finding a new renter became a challenge.
Many people had filled out application forms hoping to rent Penny’s house, and Penny asked around about all the applicants. Sarah Johnston wouldn’t be a good fit because she smoked too much, and Penny couldn’t have that smell affecting business. Jeremiah von Camp had dealt with too many clients. Jessie Sinclair was a huge environmentalist and wouldn’t approve of the chemicals salons use. Penny wasn’t even sure why she’d applied.
One day, Penny got a call from a woman named Patrisha Jerguson. Patrisha was retired and seemed perfect — no pets, no smoking, and she was quiet. Penny quickly accepted her application and helped her move in. After spending some time together, Patrisha and Penny became friends, sharing tea and stories.
But things took a turn one Monday when Penny’s employee April called in a panic. Patrisha had wandered into the salon and started doing a customer’s hair. When the staff tried to stop her , Patrisha got upset, saying only “Ms. Jane” could tell her what to do. Penny rushed over and found Patrisha sweeping the floor, thinking she was still at work.
Penny realized Patrisha was losing her memory. She called Patrisha’s daughter, Leigh, who came and took her mother back to Chicago. Patrisha was confused and sad, but Penny comforted her, promising they would still talk on the phone.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
After Patrisha left, Penny always recalled the days she spent with Patrisha.

Several months later, a familiar figure appeared at the salon’s door.

根据第三段“The patients had a type of AMD called ‘dry AMD’, which damages cells at the back of the eyes that detect light.(这些患者患有干性年龄相关性黄斑变性,这种病症会损伤眼后部的感光细胞。)”
根据第五段“When the patients wear the glasses and look at something, the camera captures images and sends the data to the black box, which makes the images clearer. By using infrared signals (红外信号), the information is sent wirelessly to the chip beneath the patients’ retina (视网膜). This chip relays signals through the optic nerve to the brain, which requires some training to understand the images they see.(患者佩戴该眼镜视物时,摄像头捕捉图像并将数据传至黑盒,黑盒会优化图像清晰度;信息通过红外信号无线传输至患者视网膜下的芯片,芯片再经视神经向大脑传递信号,而大脑需要经过一定训练才能解读看到的图像。)” 故选A。
根据第六段“Seventy-year-old Sheila Irvine was one patient who took part in the trial. She is registered as blind, but now can read books and do crosswords.(70岁的Sheila Irvine是参与此次试验的患者之一,她此前登记为失明,如今已能读书、做填字游戏。)”
根据文章最后一段“‘Blind patients are actually able to have meaningful central vision restoration, which has never been done before,’ noted Mahi Mugit, an associate professor at University College London, commenting on the trial’s outcomes.(伦敦大学学院副教授Mahi Mugit就试验结果表示:‘失明患者如今能实现有实际意义的中心视力恢复,这在以往是从未实现过的。’)”
D
For many years, scientists have believed that modern humans split off (分化) from their earlier ancestors between 500,000 and 700,000 years ago.
C 13. A 14. B 15. D
根据第二段“Homo sapiens (modern humans) share a common ancestor with Neanderthals and Denisovans, two species of early humans with large brains. At some point in the past, these three species split off from one another, and Homo sapiens are the only ones that did not go extinct. Figuring out exactly when the species split off has been difficult.(智人(现代人类)与尼安德特人、丹尼索瓦人拥有共同的祖先,后两者是两种脑容量较大的早期人类。在过去的某个时期,这三个物种彼此分化,而智人是其中唯一没有灭绝的。准确确定这些物种的分化时间一直十分困难)”可推知,文中提及三个人类物种是为了说明该项研究所面临的难题——准确确定这些物种的分化时间。故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“For the new study, a team of scientists in China and the UK used high-resolution 3D scanning and computer modeling to virtually rebuild Yunxian 2.(在这项新研究中,一支中英科学家团队使用高分辨率三维扫描和计算机建模技术对郧县2号颅骨进行了虚拟重建)” 可知,研究人员通过构建虚拟模型重新评估郧县2号颅骨。故选A。
根据第五段“This, they said, meant that if the Denisovans split off at least a million years ago, so did Homo sapiens — about 400,000 years earlier than previously thought.(他们表示,这意味着如果丹尼索瓦人是在至少一百万年前分化出来的,那么智人也是如此 —— 比此前认为的时间早了约 40 万年)” 可知,新研究发现智人的分化时间比原本认为的更早。

With an adult, ask local businesses if you can display your leaflets in their window.(你可以打印或手绘传单,在上面注明此次衣物收集的具体要求。 F选项“You can also ask family and friends to post about your drive online.(你也可以请家人和朋友在网上发布你的捐赠活动信息)”以“also”衔接前文,补充了线上宣传的方式,与前文的线下张贴传单形成互补,丰富了宣传渠道,符合语境。
根据下文“Once you have the clothing donations, you’ll want to bring them to an organization that can distribute them to where they are needed. Some organizations also offer the option to pick up your donations at a scheduled time.(一旦收集到捐赠的衣物,你需要将其送到能把衣物分发给所需人群的机构。部分机构也会提供定时上门取件的服务)”可知,本段核心是介绍收集到捐赠衣物后,将其送达相关机构的具体做法。A选项“Deliver the donations.(送达捐赠衣物)”精准概括本段主旨,词汇上与文中的“bring them to an organization”形成直接呼应,符合小标题要求。故选A项。
根据本段小标题“Express gratitude.(表达感谢)”以及上文“You can write thank-you notes to any volunteer who helped. With an adult’s assistance, post on social media about the success of the drive.(你可以给所有伸出援手的志愿者写一封感谢信。

After Patrisha left, Penny always recalled the days she spent with Patrisha. The apartment above the salon seemed so quiet without their laughter and stories. Penny missed their conversations and the warmth Patrisha brought to the place. She spent many evenings alone, recalling their time together. Penny also worried about Patrisha’s well-being in Chicago. She often found herself staring at the phone, hoping for a call from Patrisha or her daughter Leigh. The salon felt emptier without the friendly face who had become such a part of their lives.
Several months later, a familiar figure appeared at the salon’s door. Penny looked up in surprise and saw Patrisha standing there, looking a little pale but with a smile on her face. “Penny,” she said softly, “I missed you.” Penny rushed over to embrace her friend. “I didn’t think I’d see you again,” Penny said, tears in her eyes. Patrisha explained that her daughter had brought her back for a short visit. Over the next few days, Patrisha spent time with Penny and the salon staff, sharing stories and laughter once more. Penny realized that true friendship could bridge even the gaps of time and memory.
