The Chihuahuan Desert in West Texas is one of the largest deserts in North America. The winters there are cool and the summers are very hot. This area is also home to a mysterious phenomenon (现象) called the Marfa Lights.
The Marfa Lights are bright lights that appear in the night sky all of a sudden and then fly to faraway places and disappear. They are about the size of basketballs and are often described as white blue, yellow, red, or other colors. The lights sometimes even get close to people’s houses. One woman who lived on a farm told the story of what she experienced one night. She was in bed and suddenly she saw the lights shining through her bedroom window. She watched them change color for a few minutes. Finally, they went away. Pilots who used to train in the desert in the 1940s also reported that they once saw these mysterious lights.
What causes this phenomenon? People have different opinions on this. A popular explanation is that the lights might have something to do with headlights from cars on the road nearby. Scientific research also suggests that some of the lights are caused by the refraction (折射) of light between layers (层) of air that have different temperatures. However, not all of these lights can be explained so easily.
Anyway, people will continue to study the lights to find out where they come from. No matter what these lights really are, they are as mysterious today as when they first appeared. But it is certain that the mystery behind them will be solved one day.

Feng Boyao and Meng Shuqi found that their city library didn’t have enough Braille books (盲文书籍) for blind people and many of the Braille books were outdated. So, they teamed up to help the blind by fixing the problem. Feng and Meng both studied at No.37 Middle School in Taiyuan, Shanxi province. They invented a new kind of Braille reader. Their work took first prize in a national competition. The goal of this competition is to nurture creative thinking—it does this by encouraging young people to solve social problems. The invention was also given a national patent (专利).
When connected to a computer, their Braille reader can turn words into raised dots (凸起的点). Blind people can read by touching the dots, which are made of magnets (磁铁). This is the first Braille reader that uses magnets.
“We found that today’s Braille readers are very difficult and expensive,” Feng said. “So, we decided to develop a user-friendly product, especially for young blind children from grades 1 to 3. Moreover, it only costs about 2,000 yuan.”
After making their first machine, Feng and Meng visited a school for the blind to get advice and improved it based on the students’ needs, like changing the size of the screen and the amount of space between the dots.
“We hope the invention will be widely used in the future to help those blind people who can’t afford the Braille reader now,” Meng told Taiyuan News.

They are about the size of basketballs and are often described as white, blue, yellow, red, or other colors.
33. What does the first paragraph tell us about the Marfa Lights?
A. The color. B. The place. C. The speed. D. The size.
