After having her second child, 35-year-old Eman Wagdy Selim felt that she had a bigger purpose in life. Although her background was in language and translation, the young Egyptian woman, with her husband’s support, had an idea to create a platform called “Al Faraza” to provide high-quality fruits and vegetables at competitive prices. After listing 150 products, the platform began offering meat and cheese as well through start-up companies.
In 2019, Eman developed the project further into an app that allowed Egyptian women and other small-business owners who sold homemade meals, as well as local farmers, to bring their products to a wider audience.
Today, “Al Faraza”, an Egyptian word that refers to careful and attentive selection, supports Egyptian women in particular, providing them with job opportunities and income to secure decent lives for themselves and their families. They also have access to training opportunities to learn how to best prepare, market and sell homemade food to customers in Egypt through the app.

Steamed buns, or xiaolongbao, receive global recognition for their paper-thin skin and light, flavourful fillings. They are steamed to perfection, highlighting a harmonious blend of their delicate textures with the distinctive fresh and delicious broth (肉汤).
The buns, generally thought to have originated in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province, were actually created by locals from Shengzhou, a county-level city in Shaoxing, Zhejiang, around 120 kilometres southeast of Hangzhou.
Historical records show that the owner of the first xiaolongbao shop, believed that compared with Hangzhou, Shengzhou was less renowned to people. As a result, in order to attract customers, the owner decided to use Hangzhou on his signboard.
Natives of Shengzhou doing business across the country then followed suit, naming their shops Hangzhou xiaolongbao. Therefore, for a long time, Hangzhou xiaolongbao has been synonymous (密不可分的) with Shengzhou xiaolongbao.
Local statistics show that there are about 50,000 Shengzhou natives who, relying on Shengzhou xiaolongbao, have opened more than 20,000 stores nationwide. Most of the shops that are scattered (散布) throughout the streets and alleys exist as mum-and-pop stores, with the handmade buns being of good quality.
However, compared to the modern production processes of many food outlets, the development of Shengzhou xiaolongbao faced limitations. Since 2016, the government of Shengzhou has rolled out an initiative to establish distinctive brands for both Shengzhou xiaolongbao and other local snacks, with an annual investment of 30 million yuan ($4million) to fuel its growth.
Entrepreneurs (企业家) in Shengzhou have also blazed new trails by pioneering a production line for quick-frozen xiaolongbao. So far, there are more than 70 quick-frozen xiaolongbao companies in Shengzhou.
8. What is special about xiaolongbao?
A. Thin skin and tasty fillings.
B. Thick skin and sweet fillings.
C. Fried well with rich broth.
D. Baked perfectly with fresh meat.
9. Where were the buns generally believed to have originated?
A. Shengzhou. B. Hangzhou. C. Shaoxing. D. Suzhou.
10. What does the underlined phrase “less renowned” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Smaller. B. Less crowded.
C. Quieter. D. Less well-known.
11 What do the last three paragraphs mainly talk about?
A. The development of Shengzhou xiaolongbao.
B. The limitation that xiaolongbao are faced with.
C. The distinctive brands of Shengzhou xiaolongbao.
D. The production lines for quick-frozen xiaolongbao.

Are you feeling sleepy? Maybe you’re dreaming of a nice, long nap to recharge your batteries. Think about sleep for very long and you may find yourself letting out a wide, drawn-out yawn (哈欠).
While scientists have many ideas, there’s no single explanation for why humans yawn. Still, there is one thing experts know about yawns — they seem to be infectious! In fact, a person is six times more likely to yawn after seeing someone else do so.
One possible explanation has to do with something called social mirroring. This is caused by mirror neurons (镜像神经元), which help the brain notice useful behaviours in others and then copy them. When one person sees another yawn, their mirror neurons observe the action and interpret it as beneficial, causing them to yawn, too.
Another popular theory is that yawns are infectious due to social bonds. Actually, many experts believe they may be a sign of empathy (移情). Humans are undoubtedly social creatures, and they form friendships, families, and live together in groups, for which many people mirror others, such as smiling when another person does so. Yawning may be just another example of this. Some research has shown that people are most likely to catch a case of the yawns from another person if the two share a social bond.
The answer could even be that yawns aren’t truly infectious at all. Instead, people may yawn when they’re together simply because they’re in the same environment. Experts say many things may trigger (引发) yawning, including temperature and time of a day. Possible triggers may be experienced by anyone in the same general area, indicating that people yawning after each other may be a coincidence (巧合).
Think about the last time you yawned. Was it after watching another person do the same? Or did you start the yawning and pass it to others? Either way, yawning often becomes a group activity!
12. How does the author lead in the topic?
A. By asking a question. B. By referring to an old saying.
C. By listing some data. D. By giving an example.
13. How do social bonds influence the infectiousness of yawning according to Paragraph 4?
A. They signal people to avoid yawns.
B. They decide how long yawning lasts.
C. They increase the likelihood of yawning.
D. They have no obvious impact on yawning behaviour.
14. What is the purpose of Paragraph 5?
A. To argue yawning is infectious only in social settings.
B. To propose yawning should be avoided in public spaces.
C. To explain yawning spreads due to emotional connections.
D. To suggest yawning may result from environmental factors.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Exploring the biology of yawning.
B. Discussing the social aspects of yawning.
C. Investigating the infectious nature of yawning.
D. Examining the cultural significance of yawning.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. C

【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Some research has shown that people are most likely to catch a case of the yawns from another person if the two share a social bond.(一些研究表明,如果两个人之间有社会联系,那么他们最有可能被另一个人传染打哈欠)”可知,根据第四段内容,社会联系会增加打哈欠的可能性。故选C项。

How Animals Adapt to Pacific Northwest Winters
As winter covers the Pacific Northwest in its cold embrace, the season begins in “the big dark”, a time when days grow shorter, and nights stretch longer. ____16____. However, animals in our region have some amazing ways to survive and thrive (茁壮成长).
●Physical Adaptations
____17____ Mammals like deer and elk grow thicker coats to keep warm. This extra fur (毛) traps heat close to their bodies, helping them survive in freezing temperatures. Birds, on the other hand, fluff up (使蓬松) their feathers. This creates pockets of warm air that keep them cozy.
●Finding Food with Foraging (觅食) and Storage
Winter can be a challenging time for animals to find food. To cope, many species have developed strategies for foraging and storing food. ____18____. This behaviour ensures they have enough to eat when fresh food is hard to find. Pacific wren birds are well-known for storing food. This small bird can be seen foraging under snow for insects. Its ability to dig through snow allows it to find food even when it seems scarce.
●Social Adaptations
Many animals rely on social behaviour to survive during winter. Group living offers several advantages, including better hunting success and increased protection from attackers. Being in a group can also help animals stay warm, as they crowd together to share body heat. Wolves are known for their pack behaviour. They form groups to hunt and protect each other. ____19____
●Staying Active In the Cold
In the Pacific Northwest, snow and ice can create challenges for animals that live in water. However, some species have adapted to stay active despite the cold. ____20____ They build homes and create underwater entrances to these structures. This design allows them to access food stored inside, even when the surface is frozen.
A. Winter animals sleep in holes.
B. Many people think winter is tough for wildlife.
C. Social animals often gather tightly in cold winter.
D. Some animals gather and hide food in the fall so they can access it later.
E. Beavers (河狸) are remarkable animals that manage to thrive in winter.
F. Hunting in packs increases their chances of capturing larger prey, such as deer.
G. One of the most noticeable changes in animals during winter is in their fur and feathers.
【答案】16. B 17. G 18. D 19. F 20. E

Dear Alan,
Hope you’re excited about the winter camp! Thinking about your interests and China’s winter features, I strongly recommend the Chinese Painting Winter Camp.
Firstly it’s a perfect way to dive into Chinese culture. You’ll learn basic techniques like ink wash and brush control, and create works themed on bamboo or mountains. Secondly, compared to skiing, painting is more relaxed and indoor, which fits the cold winter weather well. You won’t have to worry about harsh conditions and can focus on the creative process.

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Growing up in a small village in the care of my grandmother affected my childhood with a mix of love and simple pleasures. Every day after school, I’d hurry to Grandmother’s welcoming home, greeted by the smell of freshly baked cookies and the warmth of the fireplace. We would spend hours together gardening, baking, and especially knitting (编织). Each birthday, Grandmother would gift me a hand-knitted sweater with bright colours and complex patterns, which I held dear.
Later, I moved to the city for my studies, leaving the countryside and Grandmother behind. Getting used to the exciting city life and burdened by an increasingly demanding academic schedule, I found myself unwilling to call Grandmother. Although the handmade sweater kept arriving each year, my appreciation for it decreased. The bright, old-fashioned patterns looked out of place among the modern and fashionable clothes of my classmates.
Before my 18th birthday, a package from Grandmother arrived on time again. Inside was Grandmother’s latest creation. The sweater was as colourful as ever, with eye-catching designs, but it might cause embarrassment if I wore it in school. In a moment of disappointment, I threw the sweater aside. “Why couldn’t Grandmother just be like my friends’ relatives who gifted fashionable clothes or smart devices? Why does she stick to such an old-fashioned tradition?” I complained to my mother.
My mother was sad when she heard my words. “Your grandmother is getting older, and her eyesight is not so good as it used to be,” she replied. “Despite this, she insists on keeping the birthday tradition alive.” She continued, her voice trembling (颤抖), “She rejected my advice, spending months knitting that sweater. Every stitch (一针) is filled with her love for you. She could easily buy something from the store, but she chooses to make the sweater because it means something more.” A sense of shame suddenly washed over me.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The realization that I had taken my grandmother’s love for granted struck me deeply.

I wore the sweater and stepped into the classroom on my birthday.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
The realization that I had taken my grandmother’s love for granted struck me deeply. I picked up the sweater, running my fingers over the distinctive patterns that she had painstakingly created for me. Fueled by a surge of gratitude, I dialed my grandmother’s number, my heart pounding. Hearing her voice on the phone, I immediately expressed my heartfelt thanks and promised I would wear the sweater on my birthday. Knowing I was delighted with her present, my grandmother sounded so pleased and we chatted happily for a long time.
I wore the sweater and stepped into the classroom on my birthday. When seeing my special sweater, some of my classmates were curious but others laughed at the old-fashioned design. However, their reaction didn’t bother me. After I explained its story and the love behind it, an expression of envy crossed their face. They showed great admiration for my unique and priceless gift. Wearing the sweater, I felt a profound connection to my grandmother. I proudly saw her creation as a badge of honour.

Eman’s idea only became a reality after she heard about the One Million Arab Coders Initiative, which provides online training courses to help Arab youth build and master coding skills so they can pursue jobs in digital technologies and develop their own high-tech projects.
She enrolled in the Initiative’s Data Analysis track, where she learned how to transform data into successful ideas. Acquiring these skills was a vital step towards the success of “Al Faraza”, and Eman is proud of the personal growth and achievements she has experienced thanks to the Initiative.
Overjoyed at the success of her project, Eman says: “‘Al Faraza’ has helped change the lives of 800 Egyptian women, and we will continue to grow and develop our project. We promise that we will expand the app’s reach to be accessible to all Egyptian women, wherever they are, so that we can grow together as one team.”
4. What was Eman Wagdy Selim’s original profession?

14 What is the purpose of Paragraph 5?

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
