Narrow lanes are very common in China. They are usually about two meters wide, or six chi in traditional Chinese units. Most of them are nothing special. But Liuchi Xiang (Six-chi Lane) in Tongcheng, Anhui, is perhaps the most famous lane of this kind.
Its story dates back to the Qing Dynasty (朝代). Two local families, the Zhangs and the Wus, argued over the dividing (分割) line between their houses. They couldn’t reach an agreement. The Zhang family was angry. Their relative, Zhang Ying, was an important officer in the government (政府). They wrote him a letter, asking for advice. When his reply came, they opened it to find a poem (诗) inside.
A letter from far away just for a wall.
Is not right or good at all.
Three chi to your neighbour as a gift.
Is nothing as time continues to drift.
After reading it, the Zhang family felt ashamed. They stepped back three chi for their neighbour. This act deeply moved the Wu family. In return, they decided to do the same thing and stepped back another three chi. And so came the six-chi-wide lane between the two houses.
Hundreds of years have passed since then, and the lane is still there. The people of Tongcheng still keep the poem in mind. Whenever they walk down the lane, they are reminded how kindness encourages more kindness.
26. Why is Liuchi Xiang well known in China?
A. It is wider than most old lanes.
B. It came from a story about kindness.

A. Time will change people’s feelings.
B. Giving space can avoid future fights.
C. Officials should solve local problems.
29. Why did the Wu family move back as well?
A. They respected old local rules.
B. They planned to build a public lane.
C. They were touched by the Zhangs’ act.
30. What lesson does the story mainly teach?
A. History helps explain local culture.
B. Kind actions often bring kind returns.
C. Family connections matter more than land.
C
“What’s that smell? It’s really bad”! That’s what many people say when they smell a durian, a fruit loved by some people but really not liked by others. Durians are grown in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, but now more and more farmers grow them in Hainan, China.
A durian is a large fruit, usually about 20~30cm wide. It’s also heavy and weighs up to 3kg. On the outside, it has sharp points, which look scary. This is the outer shell to protect it. It is a yellow-green-brown colour, but inside the fruit is yellow. The smell of the durian is so strong that places like Singapore and Thailand do not allow you to bring this fruit on public transport. If you take the train in Singapore, you can see the “No durian” sign at almost every station.
With such a strong smell, you may think they can’t be delicious; for so many people, because of the smell, they just can’t eat them. But many people love durians. People often eat them when they are really soft because then they are sweeter.
Even though they have a strong smell, durians are good for our health. They have lots of vitamin C, which is found in other fruits like oranges and lemons. They also have a useful nutrient that helps make your body stronger.
31. How do people usually feel about the smell of durians?
A. Most people enjoy the smell very much.
B. The smell becomes weaker after cutting.
C. Different people have very different opinions.
32. Why does a durian have sharp points outside?
A. To help it grow faster.
B. To keep the inside safe.
C. To make the fruit look larger.
33. What happens because of the durian’s strong smell?
A. Shops sell it at higher prices.
B. Farmers have to stop growing it.
C. Some places limit it on public transport.
34. When do many people like eating durians best?
A. When they are fresh and hard.
B. When they become soft and sweet.
C. When they are cooked with sugar.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. What makes durians special to people.
B. How durians help keep people healthy.
C. Why durians grow well in Southeast Asia.

Nowadays, instead of going to shopping malls or theme parks, more and more people in China choose to visit factories on weekends. When a well-known car factory in northern China opened to visitors earlier this year, many people showed strong interest in the limited (有限的) visiting chances.
Parents welcome these trips because children can see how products are made. They can build a bridge between school learning and real life. Some young people also like these visits because they can get to know more details about their parents’ jobs in factories years ago. What’s more, vloggers enjoy the special sounds and sights in the factories. They are great for making widely loved videos.
Although factory tourism is very new in China, it has been popular in Europe for a long time. For example, a famous European car maker opened its workshops to visitors as early as the 1950s. Today, factories in Europe receive millions of visitors every year.
In China, this growing trend (趋势) has a special cultural meaning. In the past five years, many large companies, including car makers and drink producers, have allowed the public to visit their factories. This shows a change from only “Made in China” to “Experienced in China”.
