For the past eight years, I’ve served as a volunteer interviewer for Stanford University’s OVAL program. My responsibility is to meet students applying to Stanford, talk with them, and write an interview report, which becomes part of the admissions files (录取档案) and is sent to the admissions officers who decide which students to accept. However, with Stanford’s acceptance rate below 4% in 2023, each time I see the word “deny” next to my interviewees’ names at the end of an admissions cycle, I feel a little more heartbroken. Was I helping these students by sharing my Stanford experiences, or was I only setting them up for greater disappointment?
Just when I was considering throwing in the towel, a piece of good news encouraged me to carry on. I received an unexpected message from Layla, one of the admitted students I had interviewed. She thanked me for helping her get into Stanford. Though touched by her words, I believed she had misunderstood the admissions process.
When we met for coffee months later, Layla delighted me with a detailed discussion of her classes, professors, research, and friends. She mentioned that she had requested to see her admissions file through the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, which allows students to access and review their educational records. I wondered why she would want to revisit her application when she should simply be enjoying her college experience.
The truth came when Layla learned that the initial admissions officer had been uncertain about her application but decided to give it another review because of my interview report. My judgment had made a difference.
Through this experience, Layla found the confidence she needed about her place at Stanford, while I rediscovered the value of my role. Sometimes, we all need to be told that our contributions matter.
4. What did the author do for the Stanford OVAL program?
A. To do interviews and prepare written reports.
B. To select applicants and make a quick judgment.
C. To meet applicants and decide who can be admitted.

Hummingbirds (蜂鸟) are surely among the most active of all birds. But they face a significant challenge moving freely between flowers, as hummingbirds cannot fold their wings at will. This should have made flying through narrow spaces difficult. But it doesn’t. New research shows why.
Hard wings are useful for birds to stay in mid-air to catch insects, says Robert Dudley of the University of California, Berkeley, because they “help lift force during the upstroke (向上拍打) as well as the downstroke”.
But they also present a challenge for hummingbirds, which need to move through thick leaves to access the flowers from which they get the nectar (花蜜). Unable to fold their wings to pass through narrow gaps, they must find other ways.
To find out how they do it, Dudley and his colleagues trained Anna’s hummingbirds, a North American west-coast species, to fly through gaps of various sizes, filming their efforts with high-speed cameras. Their study reveals that the birds have two methods, neither of which is known in other birds.
The first involves staying in the air in front of the gap before turning their body sideways and passing through slowly, one wing at a time, while continuing to flap to power the move. The second involves swinging their straight wings back at the shoulders against their bodies, to pass through the gap without waving wings up and down, which requires a faster entry speed.
When the hummingbirds encountered a new barrier, they tended to use the slower but surer sideways method. But once they became familiar with a particular gap, the birds would switch to the faster technique.
Dudley says that the next step will be to look at how the birds move through a series of gaps set at different angles (角度) to each other. “This would get closer to the actual direction tasks when they fly quickly through plants,” he says.
8. What seems difficult for hummingbirds because of their hard wings?
A. Flying very fast. B. Getting lift force.
C. Going through gaps. D. Staying in the air.
9. What is the purpose of the research on hummingbirds?
A. To train them to fly faster. B. To study their feeding habits.
C. To compare their flying methods. D. To find how they pass narrow gaps.
10. When do hummingbirds use the faster flying method?
A. When the gap is wide enough. B. When they know the gap well.
C. When they face a new barrier. D. When they stop flapping wings.
11. What does Dudley plan to do next?
A. Film the flying with high-speed cameras.
B. Observe how hummingbirds collect nectar.
C. Study how hummingbirds pass angled gaps.
D. Test hummingbirds in different environments.
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. B 11. C

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“But they face a significant challenge moving freely between flowers, as hummingbirds cannot fold their wings at will. This should have made flying through narrow spaces difficult(但它们面临着在花朵之间自由移动的重大挑战,因为蜂鸟不能随意折叠翅膀。这应该会使在狭窄的空间飞行变得困难)”以及第三段“Unable to fold their wings to pass through narrow gaps, they must find other ways(由于无法折叠翅膀穿过狭窄缝隙,它们必须寻找其他方法)”可知,蜂鸟的翅膀坚硬且无法随意折叠,这让它们穿过狭窄缝隙这件事看起来十分困难。故选C。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Unable to fold their wings to pass through narrow gaps, they must find other ways(由于无法折叠翅膀穿过狭窄缝隙,它们必须寻找其他方法)”以及第四段“To find out how they do it, Dudley and his colleagues trained Anna’s hummingbirds, a North American west-coast species, to fly through gaps of various sizes, filming their efforts with high-speed cameras.(为了弄清楚它们是如何做到的,达德利和他的同事们训练了安娜的蜂鸟,一种北美西海岸的蜂鸟,让它们飞过各种大小的缝隙,用高速摄像机拍摄它们的飞行努力。)”可知,研究人员开展这项关于蜂鸟的研究,核心目的是弄清楚无法折叠翅膀的蜂鸟是如何穿过狭窄缝隙的。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第六段“When the hummingbirds encountered a new barrier, they tended to use the slower but surer sideways method. But once they became familiar with a particular gap, the birds would switch to the faster technique(当蜂鸟遇到新的障碍物时,它们倾向于使用较慢但更稳妥的侧身穿缝方法。但一旦熟悉了某个特定的缝隙,它们就会切换到更快的方法)”可知,蜂鸟在对某个缝隙十分熟悉的情况下,会使用更快的飞行方法穿过缝隙。故选B。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Dudley says that the next step will be to look at how the birds move through a series of gaps set at different angles to each other(达德利说,下一步将观察这些蜂鸟如何穿过一系列相互呈不同角度的缝隙)”可知,达德利接下来计划研究蜂鸟如何穿过有角度的缝隙。故选C。

A bronze (青铜) sculpture of a winged lion that has long beautified the center of Piazza San Marco in Venice is from a faraway land, according to a new study. It was made in China as a protector over 1,000 years ago and may have been imported to Italy by Marco Polo’s father via the Silk Road in the 13th century.
In the study, researchers identified the source of the bronze used to create the famous lion, which became an official symbol of Venice in the early 1260s but whose exact origins are not clear. The researchers examined a series of nine samples from different parts of the lion and used a scientific way to identify the percentage of lead isotopes (铅同位素) in the metal.
By comparing the lead isotope percentage from the Venetian lion to worldwide reference databases, the researchers narrowed down the origin of the bronze to the Lower Chang River in what is now China, today called the Yangtze River. A previous study by another research group showed that a thing from the Shang dynasty has the same lead isotope signal as the Venetian lion.
One possible explanation for the Venice lion, the researchers suggested, rests with the Venetian businessmen Niccolò and Maffeo Polo, the father and uncle of Marco Polo. In the 13th century, the brothers travelled along the Silk Road, eventually reached the city known today as Beijing, and spent four years in the court of Kublai Khan, a powerful ruler of China at that time. Perhaps the Polo brothers found a sculpture there that fit their idea of what a lion looked like and managed to ship it back to Venice in pieces.
“Of course, this is only one possible guess based on the crossing of historical and archaeometallurgical (考古冶金学的) data. The word now goes back to the historians”, the researchers wrote.
12. How did the researchers find out where the lion came from?
A. By referring to Chinese art styles.
B. By studying old historical records.
C. By following Marco Polo’s travel route.
D. By analyzing lead isotopes in the bronze.
13. What do we know about the lion?
A. It was first discovered in Beijing.
B. It was created as a symbol of Venice.
C. It was brought to Venice as one piece.
D. It was probably made in ancient China.
14. Why do the researchers mention historians in Paragraph 5?
A. To praise them for earlier discoveries.
B. To show the guess needs further study.
C To suggest that they carried out the study.
D. To explain how lead isotope analysis works.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. History Story: Marco Polo Brought a Lion from China
B. Tourist Spot: Winged Lion Attracts in Piazza San Marco
C. Historical Finding: Bronze Protectors Used in Ancient Italy
D. Scientific Discovery: Venice Lion Sculpture Possibly Chinese
【答案】12. D 13. D 14. B 15. D

How to Stay Focused
We’ve all found ourselves sitting at a desk, unable to concentrate. In a world full of information and distractions, staying focused is a big challenge. ____16____ Here is some useful advice from experts.
____17____
It’s easy to lose focus when a class is boring or hard. Instead of just sitting there, turn listening into an active activity. A good way to do this is by using a special note-taking method. For example, divide your paper into three parts: main ideas, questions, and a summary. As the class goes on, write down key points and any questions you have. This keeps you engaged and helps you understand the lesson better.
Use the 5-minute rule.
When you can’t focus, challenge yourself to work for just five minutes. ____18____ Often, once you start again, you will find it easier to continue. If you’re still struggling, take a tinier first step, like shortening the work time and extending the rest time.
Break tasks into small steps.
A big task can feel scary. The trick is to break it down. Instead of trying to “finish all the questions,” focus on one small part at a time. If you have a lot of homework, just start by completing one math problem. ____19____
Clear your mind.
____20____ To solve this, get a notebook and write down everything in your head. This helps clear your mind, giving it space to focus on what’s important, and you don’t need to write in full sentences.
A. Become an active listener.
B. Review your notes after class.
C. Then, reward yourself with a short break.
D. Learning to focus better will help you succeed.
E. Sometimes your brain is too full of different thoughts.
F. Therefore, it is important to find a quiet place to study.
G. This makes the work less stressful and helps you concentrate.
【答案】16. D 17. A 18. C 19. G 20. E

【答案】
How to Use AI Properly as a High School Student
Dear classmates,
Nowadays, some high-school students rely too much on AI, like using it to write essays without thinking. This is a big problem.
Here are my suggestions. First, we should use AI as a tool for learning. For example, when we don’t understand a grammar point, we can ask AI what it is, which is similar to asking a teacher. Second, we must do our own work. We should know that what we gain by ourselves is more valuable than what AI gives us.
Let’s use AI properly and make progress in our studies!
Thank you!

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last night was the last game for my 8-year-old son’s soccer team. In the final quarter, tension filled the air. The kids ran with all their efforts, while parents held their hands tightly, watching the ball pass back and forth. The score was 2-1 in my son’s team’s favor, and every pass felt like it could change the game’s outcome. Parents circled the field, shouting encouragement loudly and warmly.
With less than 10 seconds left, the ball rolled to Mikey O’Donnell, one of my son’s teammates. Everyone held their breath — this could be the final play. Shouts of “Kick it!” echoed across the field. Mikey leaned back, tensed his small body, and struck the ball with all his strength. It flew through the air, and for a moment, everyone froze. Then the crowd around me went wild. People burst out laughing, clapped their hands and cheered.
Yes, Mikey indeed scored, but in the wrong goal — he’d kicked the ball into the net of his own team. The score was now 2-2, and the game ended in a tie. My son and his teammates’ smiles slowly faded (消失) as they realized the ball had gone the wrong way. Some of them kicked the grass lightly in disappointment, while others stood frozen, staring at the ball in their own net, unsure how to act.
Mikey had Down’s syndrome (唐氏综合症) and for him, there was no such thing as a wrong goal. Every time someone scored a goal, Mikey gave them a happy hug. He even hugged players on the other team when they scored.
Finally, the silence was broken by Mikey, who jumped and shouted with excitement, “I scored! I scored! Everybody won! Everybody won!” As Mikey cheered, everyone was staring at him helplessly.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Everyone on both teams cheered, and parents rushed happily to join their kids.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 All of a sudden, Mikey ran joyfully, arms open, to hug my son. My son froze for a second, then smiled and hugged Mikey back tightly. Seeing this, other teammates walked over one by one, patting Mikey’s shoulder and cheering for him. “Great goal, Mikey!” they shouted warmly, forgetting the tie. Even the opposing team’s kids smiled and waved at him. No one blamed him; instead, everyone was moved by his pure joy. The disappointment in the air faded quickly, replaced by warmth and kindness.
Everyone on both teams cheered, and parents rushed happily to join their kids. They took photos of the kids hugging each other, laughing and chatting like old friends. My son held Mikey’s hand, telling him how amazing he was. Mikey’s face lit up with happiness, not knowing he had “made a mistake” but feeling loved deeply. That night, no one cared about winning or losing. We all realized that the true spirit of soccer was not victory, but friendship, tolerance and the simple joy of playing together.

D. To coach students for interviews and offer guidance.
5. What does the underlined phrase “throwing in the towel” in Para 3 probably mean?
A. Working harder. B. Giving up.
C. Changing methods. D. Throwing files.
6. What did the author realize through Layla’s experience?
A. Students have to check their admissions files.
B. Most admissions officers doubt interview reports.
C. Interview reports can influence admissions decisions.
D. Students often misunderstand the admissions process.
7. How did the author’s feelings change throughout the story?
A. From doubtful to valued. B. From nervous to relaxed.
C. From confident to confused. D. From excited to disappointed.

A. When the gap is wide enough. B. When they know the gap well.
C When they face a new barrier. D. When they stop flapping wings.
11. What does Dudley plan to do next?
A. Film the flying with high-speed cameras.
B. Observe how hummingbirds collect nectar.
C Study how hummingbirds pass angled gaps.
D. Test hummingbirds in different environments.

13 What do we know about the lion?
C. To suggest that they carried out the study.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
