Mia’s New Balance
Mia was a Grade 8 student who loved studying. She spent almost all her time reading books or doing homework—even during breaks, she refused to play with classmates. “Good grades are the most important thing,” she always told herself.
One day, Mia suddenly felt dizzy in math class. Her teacher sent her to the school nurse. She said, “You’re tired because you don’t rest or exercise enough. Your body and mind need balance.” Mia didn’t take it seriously. She went back to studying as soon as she got home.
A week later, Mia had a big exam. She stayed up late the night before, memorizing formulas (公式) and writing notes. But during the exam, she couldn’t focus— her head hurt, and her hands shook. She made many silly mistakes. When the results came out, Mia’s score was much lower than expected. She felt sad and confused.
Her mom noticed her unhappiness and said gently, “Mia, studying hard is good, but not at the cost of your health. Why not try going for a walk or playing badminton with friends after finishing homework?” Mia decided to give it a try.
Every afternoon, she played basketball with her classmates for 30 minutes. She also started going to bed early and listening to soft music before sleep. Little by little, Mia felt more energetic. She could focus better on class, and her mood became brighter. In the next exam, she got a great grade—even better than before!
Mia finally got it: A healthy body and a relaxed mind are the best helpers for success. Only when we take care of both our physical and mental health can we truly shine in school and life.

Do you often see colorful objects dancing in the sky on windy days? Those are kites, an important part of Chinese culture with a long history. The earliest kites in China date back to over 2,000 years ago, during the Spring and Autumn Period. At first, they were used for military purposes—soldiers used them to send messages or measure distances. Later, kites became popular among ordinary (普通的) people as a form of entertainment.
Chinese kites are famous for their beautiful designs and rich meanings. Common patterns include dragons, phoenixes, butterflies, and fish. Each pattern has a special symbol: dragon is a symbol of power and good luck, while fish stands for prosperity (繁荣). Making a kite is a careful craft. Craftsmen use bamboo for the frame because it is light and strong, then cover it with colorful silk or paper. They often paint traditional stories or natural scenes on the surface, making each kite a work of art.
Flying kites is a popular activity in China, especially during the Spring Festival and Qingming Festival. People believe that flying kites can bring good luck and drive away bad luck. In some areas, there are even kite festivals where people gather to show off their beautifully made kites and compete with each other. Today, Chinese kites have spread around the world, becoming a symbol of Chinese culture and friendship.
36. How does the writer start the text?
A. By telling a story. B. By giving a fact.

C. Chinese Kites: Culture, History and Popularity D. Popular Festivals for Flying Kites

Today was an amazing day. There was a total solar eclipse in Wuhan! I woke up early because I was getting excited!
My friends and I went down to the Yangtze River to find a good place to watch it. We took cameras, chairs, food and drink so we could look and eat. Lots of people gathered there to watch it. Slowly, the moon moved in front of the sun. It looked like someone bit a hole in the sun. The sun got darker and darker as the moon slowly covered the sun.
At 9: 26 a. m. , the moon completely covered the sun. The sky got dark. The crowd gasped and cheered. The light of the sun made a ring of light around the moon. I took this photograph. The total eclipse lasted for only five minutes! Then it passed and the sky started to get brighter again.
I was really inspired by the eclipse this morning. In the afternoon, I spent hours reading about astronomers, eclipses, and how the planets move in our solar system. The universe is simply amazing! I also watched some videos about famous taikonauts. I want to become a taikonaut some day. The sky is the limit!
