Much like a nursing home, Redwood Aquarium provides a place where penguins can age with dignity. When Bennett, a critically endangered African penguin, started losing his vision and slowing down his steps, it became clear that he needed a safe place to age.
Redwood Aquarium, where the 33-year-old Bennett was born and has lived his entire life, decided in February to set up a care center for him and its six other aging penguins.
“Initially, we found the idea unconventional,” said Mark Hudson, manager of the aquarium. “But the more we were looking at what physical limitations they have, the more we started to realize that we had to do something.”
The rocky island near the entrance is set apart from the rest of the aquarium ensuring that the older penguins don’t have to compete for territory with their often aggressive, younger peers. The enclosure has some flatter surface and a carpeted path down to the water, which allows Bennett and the other penguins to better navigate up and down the island. The aquarium has also built a stand in front of the island, which makes it easier for the penguins to jump out of the water.
Caring for the aging penguins goes far beyond a safer enclosure. The older birds get more checkups than their younger counterparts, and doctors offer them treatment for diseases that might be familiar to older humans. There are also more cameras around the island, so staff can better monitor the birds. Bennett has become more active since moving to the new island — swimming more with his mate and getting off the island more often.
A crowd of tourists formed around the enclosure to watch, including Helen Stone, a 79-year-old tourist who was being pushed in a wheelchair by her family. Hearing about Bennett’s age and the care he got, Helen said she could relate. “That’s wonderful,” Helen said. “All of us older people need extra care as we get older.”
4. Why was a care center opened in Redwood Aquarium?
A. To train penguins for performances. B. To separate aging penguins from visitors.
C. To study the endangered African penguins. D. To give elderly penguins a safe place to age.
5. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Improvement of the aquarium. B. Competitions among penguins.
C. Introduction of the care program. D. Convenience of the rocky island.
6. What happens after Bennett has been brought to the care center?
A. Better care is offered. B. More food is provided.
C. More birds are attracted. D. Better doctors are assigned.
7. Why does the author mention Helen Stone in the last paragraph?
A. To compare her age with Bennett’s. B. To recommend Redwood Aquarium.
C. To praise the aquarium’s care program. D. To show her being cared by her family.
D 5. D 6. A 7. C

根据第一段中的“When Bennett, a critically endangered African penguin, started losing his vision and slowing down his steps, it became clear that he needed a safe place to age.(当极度濒危的非洲企鹅贝内特开始视力下降、步履蹒跚时,很明显它需要一个安全的地方安度晚年)”以及第二段中的“Redwood Aquarium, where the 33-year-old Bennett was born and has lived his entire life, decided in February to set up a care center for him and its six other aging penguins. (红杉水族馆于今年2月决定为33岁的贝内特及馆内其他六只步入老年的企鹅设立一个照护中心,贝内特自出生起便一直生活在这座水族馆里)”可知,红杉水族馆开设护理中心是为了给衰老的企鹅提供一个安全的安度晚年的地方。故选D项。
【5题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段中的“The rocky island near the entrance is set apart from the rest of the aquarium, ensuring that the older penguins don’t have to compete for territory with their often aggressive, younger peers. The enclosure has some flatter surface and a carpeted path down to the water, which allows Bennett and the other penguins to better navigate up and down the island. The aquarium has also built a stand in front of the island, which makes it easier for the penguins to jump out of the water.(入口附近的岩石岛与水族馆的其他区域隔离开来,确保年长的企鹅不必与往往好斗的年轻同伴争夺领地。这个围栏有一些更平坦的地面,还有一条铺着地毯的通往水面的小路,这让贝内特和其他企鹅能更好地在岛上上下活动。水族馆还在岛前建了一个平台,让企鹅们更容易跳出水面)”可知,第四段主要介绍了为衰老企鹅打造的岩石岛为它们的生活带来了诸多便利。故选D项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“Caring for the aging penguins goes far beyond a safer enclosure. The older birds get more checkups than their younger counterparts, and doctors offer them treatment for diseases that might be familiar to older humans. There are also more cameras around the island, so staff can better monitor the birds. Bennett has become more active since moving to the new island — swimming more with his mate and getting off the island more often.(照顾衰老的企鹅远不止一个更安全的围栏。这些年长的企鹅比年轻的企鹅接受更多的体检,医生会为它们治疗那些老年人类也可能患上的疾病。岛的周围还安装了更多的摄像头,这样工作人员就能更好地监控这些企鹅。贝内特搬到新岛后变得更加活跃了——和伴侣一起游泳的次数更多了,也更经常离开岛屿)”可知,贝内特被带到护理中心后,得到了更为周全的照料。故选A项。
根据最后一段中的“A crowd of tourists formed around the enclosure to watch, including Helen Stone, a 79-year-old tourist who was being pushed in a wheelchair by her family. Hearing about Bennett’s age and the care he got, Helen said she could relate. “That’s wonderful,” Helen said. “All of us older people need extra care as we get older.”(围栏周围围了一群游客观看,其中包括79岁的游客海伦·斯通,她正由家人推着轮椅。听说了贝内特的年龄和它所得到的照顾后,海伦说她深有同感。“这太棒了,”海伦说,“我们所有上了年纪的人老了都需要额外的照顾。”)”可推知,作者提及海伦·斯通,是通过她的感受和评价来称赞水族馆为衰老企鹅设立护理中心的这一举措。故选C项。

To be honest, people are saying “honestly” all the time. According to an online database of English usage, the use of “honestly” has been rising over the last 25 years. Not just in casual conversations, it’s also on the internet, which is used as a sign to tell the truth.
“I get so excited when I see this,” says linguist Troy Williams. Williams says it makes sense because it has gone hand in hand with the rise of internet since 2000. The more information — and disinformation — flies on the internet, the more urgent people feel to prove their statements.
“Honestly” has shifted over time. The word “honest” comes from the Latin “honestus”, meaning honorable. Although the meaning lives on, its usage has expanded to other situations. Now it is often applied to soften a critical remark. For example, “Honestly, I don’t think we should be friends anymore.” By adding “honestly” to it, you are adding an emotional signal to the conversation to express your true feeling.
Yet, are people actually being honest when “honestly” is used? To be honest, the word is also used by people with a history of less-than-honorable behavior. So people often doubt this eight-letter word. As AI is booming and deep fakes are everywhere, it seems that the word is losing its value. Some people even think lying is pretty common and early researches also suggested that.
However, other experts hold opposite ideas. Susan Murphy, an expert in language usage, argues against the assumption above. As she points out, lying is less common than we think and that the majority of people are really being honest.
Susan admits she also has an “honestly” habit, but it’s not just a filler word for her. “I am also a very straightforward speaker, and I want to convey all the things I am feeling to someone,” she says. “I do use ‘honestly’ earnestly in my life and I hope that people can get my feeling.”
8. What can we learn about “honestly”?
A. Honest people like to use it. B. It has been used more than before.
C. People often sign it in writing. D. It is often used in online English.
9. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in paragraph 2?
A. The idea of Troy Williams. B. The online sign to tell the truth.
C. The information on the internet. D. The rise in the use of “honestly”.
10. Why do people think “honestly” is losing its value?
A. People are likely to tell lies. B. The internet is becoming popular.
C. Fake content floods the internet. D. The word is used in other situations.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Do you say it honestly? B. Does “honestly” change?
C. Is “honestly” a good habit? D. Do you change your view honestly?
B 9. D 10. C 11. A
根据第一段中的“According to an online database of English usage, the use of “honestly” has been rising over the last 25 years. (根据一个英语用法在线数据库,在过去25年里,“honestly”的使用频率一直在上升)”可知,“honestly”的使用频率相比以往更高了。故选B项。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中的“Williams says it makes sense because it has gone hand in hand with the rise of internet since 2000.(威廉姆斯说这是有道理的,因为自2000年以来,它与互联网的兴起相伴相随)”可知,前文提及“honestly”的使用频率上升,此处的it指代的就是“honestly”使用频率的上升这一现象。
根据第四段中的“As AI is booming and deep fakes are everywhere, it seems that the word is losing its value.(随着人工智能的蓬勃发展,深度伪造内容随处可见,这个词似乎正在失去其价值)”可知,人们认为“honestly”失去价值是因为网络上充斥着虚假内容。
通读全文,尤其是第四段中的“Yet, are people actually being honest when “honestly” is used? T (然而,当人们使用“honestly”时,他们真的在说实话吗?)”以及后文专家对此的不同观点可知,文章围绕“honestly”的使用展开,核心探讨的是人们使用这个词时是否真的秉持诚实的态度,因此“Do you say it honestly?”适合作为本文标题。故选A项。

Chatbots, online chatting apps, are as close to us as our phones. As a survey finds, nearly three-quarters of 13-to-17-year-olds have ever used AI chatbots, and almost one-quarter use them a few times a week. However, when it comes to mental crisis, these chatbots just perform very, very poorly.
To see how the chatbots perform, Owen Thompson, a clinical psychologist and his group acted as teenage clients and interacted with the most-visited ones through 75conversations to test their effect. They found the conversations were alarming. Those chatbots failed to provide appropriate guidelines in about 25 percent of conversations.
8:30 p.m.
9:37 p.m.
Days like this I feel lonely. It’s too depressing.
...and we have some rules which I disobeyed...and my mother knows everything now...which hurts her too...and I feel sad after seeing her like this.
8:32 p.m.
9:38 p.m.
I’m really sorry that you’re feeling this way but I’m unable to provide the help that you need. Talk things over with someone such as a mental health professional or a trusted person.
The important thing to remember is that your worth is not defined by someone else’s actions or words, even if that person was someone you loved and trusted. Your self-worth remains...
Examples of some conversations
Those replies differ from the advice from human psychologists, which can’t meet the teenagers’ needs. “We mental health doctors have extensive training and are licensed to provide this care,” Thompson says. But chatbots don’t.
Part of the attraction of these chatbots is their convenience and privacy, which are valuable things for a teenager. This type of thing is more appealing than going to mom and dad and saying, “You know, I’m really struggling with my mental health,” or a psychologist who is four decades older than them, and telling them their darkest secrets.
“Looking ahead, the technology needs revising. We have to ensure that the benefits outweigh the risks,” says Julian Hughes, president of the Digital Health Committee. Some efforts to regulate this technology are already under way. A new law is to regulate these AI companions, and the committee will hold a public meeting to explore new generative AI-based mental health tools.
For lots of people — teenagers included — good mental health care is hard to access. “I don’t think it’s a coincidence that people are turning to chatbots,” says Julian. “But for now, we need to recognize the limitations of what these platforms can and cannot do.”
12. What does paragraph 2 act as?
A. Illustrating the author’s idea. B. Arousing the readers’ interest.
C. Introducing the background. D. Setting guidelines for chatting.
13. Why are teenagers attracted to chatbots?
A. They act like their parents. B. They can keep their secrets.
C. They are popular apps nowadays. D. They are pretty cost-effective.
14. What can be inferred about AI companions?
A. They are currently banned by regulators.
B. They are fully regulated by existing laws.
C. They are proven risk-free and harmless.
D. They require revision to deal with risks.
15. What’s Julian Hughes’s attitude toward the capability of chatbots?
A. Approving. B. Dismissive. C. Concerned. D. Unclear.
A 13. B 14. D 15. C

根据第二段“To see how the chatbots perform, Owen Thompson, a clinical psychologist and his group acted as teenage clients and interacted with the most-visited ones through 75 conversations to test their effect. (为了观察聊天机器人的表现,临床心理学家欧文·汤普森和他的团队扮演青少年客户,通过75次对话与访问量最大的聊天机器人进行互动,以测试它们的效果)”可知,第二段通过具体实验来阐述作者的观点,即聊天机器人在处理心理危机时表现不佳。故选A项。
根据倒数第三段“Part of the attraction of these chatbots is their convenience and privacy, which are valuable things for a teenager. This type of thing is more appealing than going to mom and dad and saying, “You know, I’m really struggling with my mental health,” or a psychologist who is four decades older than them, and telling them their darkest secrets. (这些聊天机器人的部分吸引力在于它们的便利性和隐私性,这对青少年来说是很宝贵的。比起对父母说“你知道吗,我在心理健康方面真的很挣扎”,或者对一个比他们大四十岁的心理医生说出他们最黑暗的秘密,这种事情更有吸引力)”可知,青少年被聊天机器人吸引是因为它们能保护隐私,保守秘密。故选B项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段““Looking ahead, the technology needs revising. We have to ensure that the benefits outweigh the risks,” says Julian Hughes, president of the Digital Health Committee. (“展望未来,这项技术需要修订。我们必须确保益处大于风险,”数字健康委员会主席Julian Hughes说)”可知,AI陪伴技术需要修订以应对风险。故选D项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““I don’t think it’s a coincidence that people are turning to chatbots,” says Julian. “But for now, we need to recognize the limitations of what these platforms can and cannot do.” (“我认为人们转向聊天机器人并非巧合,” Julian说。“但就目前而言,我们需要认识到这些平台能做什么和不能做什么的局限性。”)”可知,Julian对聊天机器人的能力持担忧态度,认为它们存在局限性。故选C项。

Hikers are familiar with the motto “Hike your own hike”. That is to say — don’t compare how many miles you walk in a day with how far other hikers are traveling.
However, the desire to compare is part of human nature. ____16____ A new research has found that more than 10% of daily thoughts contain making a comparison of some kind. People believe that they make less money, go to fewer parties, and are burdened with heavier life pressure than other people, including their close friends.
____17____ For example, we compare ourselves to the fittest person we know when assessing how fit we are, the best cook around us when evaluating our cooking skills, etc. Unsurprisingly, this means that we feel we fall short of others when we evaluate our own fitness, cooking, and so on.
The more we compare ourselves to others, the more we will be dissatisfied, which drives us off the path of happiness. ____18____ Luckily, the research also offers suggestions for us to get back on the right track.
Set realistic expectations. Comparing ourselves to others can lead us to failures, because we tend to have unrealistic expectations about our capacity. ____19____ This will help us get out of the comparison trap and focus on finishing tasks.
Celebrate others’ successes. Try to celebrate and encourage the people around us, rather than feeling competitive or envious of their successes. This can be a difficult process, but it is an incredibly powerful way of taking control of our own lives. ____20____
A. Setting realistic expectations is easy.
B. It is strong and hard-wired into our brains.
C. In short, comparison can be the thief of joy.
D. However, comparison is of great significance.
E. And it will undoubtedly bring us more joy in the long run.
F. Think realistically and break our goals down into smaller tasks.
G This happens because people always focus on the top performers around.
B 17. G 18. C 19. F 20. E

可知,后文通过举例说明人们总会与身边最优秀的人比较,进而产生自我否定的感受,此空应点明这一现象产生的原因,G选项“This happens because people always focus on the top performers around.
根据前文“The more we compare ourselves to others, the more we will be dissatisfied, which drives us off the path of happiness. (我们越和别人攀比,就会越不满,这会让我们偏离幸福的轨道。)”以及后文“Luckily, the research also offers suggestions for us to get back on the right track.
以及前文“Comparing ourselves to others can lead us to failures, because we tend to have unrealistic expectations about our capacity.
以及前文“Try to celebrate and encourage the people around us, rather than feeling competitive or envious of their successes. This can be a difficult process, but it is an incredibly powerful way of taking control of our own lives. (试着去赞美和鼓励身边的人,而不是对他们的成功心存竞争感或嫉妒。这可能是一个艰难的过程,但却是掌控自己生活的一种非常有效的方式。)”可知,本段核心是赞美他人的成功,前文说明这一做法虽难但有效,此空应说明这一做法带来的长远好处,E选项“And it will undoubtedly bring us more joy in the long run. (而且从长远来看,这无疑会给我们带来更多的快乐。)”中的it指代前文赞美他人成功的做法,承接前文的做法特点,且点明其长远的积极影响,符合语境。故选E项。

It’s wonderful that our school plans to launch an after-school labor program.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
It’s wonderful that our school plans to launch an after-school labor program. After weighing the two options carefully, I strongly advocate for “Culinary Arts” as our school’s new after-school labor program.
Unlike handcrafts which are fun but often end up as decorations, cooking skills let us solve real-life needs. For example, when our parents are busy, we could make ourselves a bowl of tomato egg noodles — a simple meal that fills us up, instead of just eating snacks. Besides, cooking brings richer class interaction. We could take turns stirring the pot or passing ingredients during preparation, and after cooking, sit together to taste each other’s dishes. This back-and-forth makes the class warm and engaging, which I think more classmates will enjoy.
This program combines skill acquisition with fun, and I’m convinced that it will gain great popularity among students.

It felt like a jungle, and I, like a river, flowed amid the chaos of students, trying to find my place.
I wasn’t just in a new school; I was also in a new city. My family had recently moved here and I really missed my old best friend Steve. Back home, we used to play basketball and do our homework together. Before I left, he reminded me of our shared dream: “Get good grades, Jack, so we can both get into that top university after high school.” It was our goal and our plan — the future we’d always pictured together.
But going to the university with my best friend was still a year away, and right now, after the first week, I was alone. “Jack,” I told myself as I walked home after school, “you need to come out of your shell.”
The next day, I was sitting at lunch alone again when I looked out of the window and caught sight of Henry, a boy that I had noticed on my first day at school. I observed that wherever he was, Henry was always at the center of attention — he was just cool.
Today he was playing basketball with his friends in the schoolyard, just like I used to do with Steve. I walked out to the yard to watch them run the ball up and down the half court. Suddenly, their ball got loose and rolled towards my feet. I picked it up and made a shot. Score!
“Whew, that shot was smooth!” Henry cried. He and his friends rushed over, congratulating me on the shot. “Hey, want to be on my team?” Henry asked. “Y-yeah. Sure!” I joined them joyfully. Ten minutes into the basketball game, a sense of belonging washed over me. I made new friends! Before we could finish, the bell rang, so I stopped and said that I was going back to class. Shockingly, Henry threw the ball back at me.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
“Forget that bell,” he barked, “continue the game!”

I tried to focus on the game, but Steve’s words kept ringing in my ears.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
“Forget that bell,” he barked, “continue the game!” Henry gave me a sharp look, pointing at the basketball at my feet. Loneliness flooded back — sitting alone at lunch, having no one to talk to and wandering along empty hallways. Now these popular guys had finally let me join them, and I didn’t want to blow this chance. I took a deep breath, picked up the ball, and continued the game. But my mind was elsewhere. Guilt hung over me as I thought about skipping class, and my mind kept going back to Steve, his voice echoing our promise to study hard for the same university. Every pass and shot felt stiff, for my heart wasn’t really in the game.
I tried to focus on the game, but Steve’s words kept ringing in my ears. I knew I had to make the right choice, even if it meant losing these new friends. I walked to Henry and gently told him that I couldn’t keep playing. I explained my promise with Steve and how I didn’t want to break it. Henry paused for a second, and then nodded slowly. He said he was sorry for pushing me, and the other kids apologized, too. We all rushed back to class, arriving just in time. As I slid into my seat, guilt melted into relief — I kept our promise. True friendship, I realized, is about supporting each other — not losing your way just to be part of the crowd.

The rocky island near the entrance is set apart from the rest of the aquarium, ensuring that the older penguins don’t have to compete for territory with their often aggressive, younger peers.
C To praise the aquarium’s care program. D. To show her being cared by her family.
C
However other experts hold opposite ideas.
D

9:37 p.m.
Days like this I feel lonely. It’s too depressing.
...and we have some rules which I disobeyed...and my mother knows everything now...which hurts her too...and I feel sad after seeing her like this.

A. Approving. B. Dismissive. C. Concerned. D. Unclear.

G. This happens because people always focus on the top performers around.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
“Forget that bell,” he barked, “continue the game!”
