Grand Central Terminal (GCT), a Beaux-Arts building since 1913, remains one of New York’s most visited attractions. Let’s take a look at a few of the gems (宝石) that make this historic landmark shine.
The Transportation Sculpture
Designed by French sculptor Jules-Felix Coutan, Transportation is 66 feet wide and stands 48 feet tall at its highest point. Coutan made a small-scale model of the sculptural group, and craftsmen in Long Island City carved it from Indiana limestone.
The Tiffany Clock
A jewel-like clock made by world-renowned Tiffany Studios sits in the middle of the Transportation statuary, right below Mercury’s toes. With a diameter of 14 feet, this colorful timepiece is said to be the largest Tiffany glass clock in the world.
The Main Concourse’s Ceiling Mural (壁画)
About 50 artists helped paint the mural, which was designed by a French artist named Paul-Cesar Helleu. Although the artistic team worked with an astronomy professor, soon after GCT opened, a sharp-eyed commuter noticed that the constellations (星座) weren’t in their usual positions. The mural had been painted backwards.
The Whispering Gallery
You’ll find the whispering gallery in front of the famed Grand Central Oyster Bar & Restaurant. To explore the magical sound for yourself, stand in a corner and face the wall. Have someone do the same thing in the opposite corner. Then, all you need to do is talk. The sound will travel across the curves of the vaulted ceiling, right to the ears of the person waiting in the opposite corner.
1. Who created the design for Transportation?
A. Helleu. B. Coutan. C. Tiffany. D. Mercury.
2. What is a feature of The Main Concourse’s Ceiling Mural?
A. It’s designed by a foreign astronomer.
B. It’s a gem shining in the night sky.
C. It’s a collectively designed timepiece.
D. It’s painted the wrong way around.
3. What can a visitor do in the whispering gallery?
A. Buy a right souvenir. B. Walk across its ceiling.
C. Test the sound effect. D. Paint the ceiling mural.

Outside the Field Museum in Chicago, a bronze sculpture by artist Marla Friedman captures a moment when a friendship was made.
It’s called “The Red Palm Nut.” A young woman sits barefoot on the ground, reaching out her hand to a chimpanzee (黑猩猩), who sits about a yard away. And he lightly, seemingly shyly, takes her human fingers into his own. A bright, red palm nut has dropped on the soil between them. The woman in the sculpture is the great primatologist (灵长类动物学家) and conservationist Jane Goodall, at the moment she first earned the trust of a wild chimp.
Jane Goodall called the silvery-chinned chimp David Greybeard. She met him when she was in her 20s, who saved cash tips she’d earned as a waitress to journey to Africa, where she served as assistant to the famed anthropologist Louis Leakey.
On a rainy morning of November 4, 1960, she saw David Greybeard and other chimps take twigs (嫩枝) from a tree, pick off their leaves, and use them as sticks to pierce a termite mound (白蚁丘) and slurp the insects off the end — almost like how human beings might lick peanut butter off a spoon. What she saw and recorded was startling: the chimps had made the twigs into tools. When she wrote about it to Louis Leakey, he famously replied, “We must now redefine man, redefine tools, or accept chimpanzees as humans.”
By the time Jane Goodall died last October, at the age of 91, she’d been honored around the world for her work with chimps and people, and established animal shelters and forest conservation programs.
David Greybeard, I think she’d want us to note, died in 1968. Jane Goodall and her friend saw strangers in a jungle, reached out their hands, and began a friendship that changed how humans understood our place in the world.
4. What does the sculpture express to the public?
A. The development of cross-species friendship.
B. The remarkable artistic talent of Friedman.
C. Natural response of animals to humans.
D. The great worries Goodall had about chimpanzees.
5. What is a characteristic of Jane Goodall’s job?
A. Exploring the mysteries of nature.
B. Conducting animal experiments.
C. Studying interaction with chimps.
D. Revealing the goodness of human nature.
6. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “startling” in paragraph 4?
A. Amazing. B. Frightening. C. Inspiring. D. Entertaining.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To introduce a great sculpture. B. To honour Jane Goodall.
C. To share a scientific discovery. D. To uncover chimps’ secret.

According to a 2024 report from ocean conservancy organization Oceana, Amazon produced 208 million pounds of plastic packaging (包装材料) waste from U.S. deals in 2022. Despite a global drop in plastic waste, the number for U.S. shipping saw a 9.6 percent increase. “This amount of plastic, in the form of air pillows, would circle the Earth more than 200 times,” the organization says.
Amazon, for what it’s worth, does provide guidelines around the topic. U.S. customers whose orders are achieved by Amazon can click on any order in the Amazon app and scroll down to the bottom to view recycling instructions. Customers can also ask Alexa or Siri “How do I recycle my Amazon packaging?” and both will direct them to Amazon’s guidelines.
But David Pinsky, a senior plastics campaigner at Greenpeace, doesn’t think this information is very useful. “While it is helpful to provide information, Amazon is continuing to place the load on customers to manage its huge packaging footprint. As U.S. and global recycling markets crash, the truth is that very few plastics are still recyclable and, even if they are collected for recycling, most are not recycled. It’s time for Amazon to throw away all single-use packaging and switch to reuse and refill systems,” Pinsky, who works to make large companies reduce their single-plastic use, wrote in an email.
Large corporations like Amazon need to take responsibility by ending throwaway packaging and switching to reuse and refill systems, Pinsky explained.
In a December 2022 blog post, Amazon admitted this difference: “Although the plastic packaging Amazon uses today is recyclable, it generally requires our customers to take the materials from their homes to store drop-off locations. As a company that centers our customers, we recognize it’s not the easiest customer experience.”
8 How does the author start the text
A. By making a comparison. B. By listing some key data.
C. By presenting a viewpoint. D. By quoting a famed saying.
9. What can we find in the Amazon app according to the text?
A. Remarks from green campaigners.
B. Suggestions of making proper orders.
C. Instructions about recycling plastics.
D. Guidelines of reducing buyers’ burden.
10. Which of the following may David Pinsky agree with?
A. Amazon apps are of no use to shoppers.
B. Amazon provides valuable information.
C. Amazon is a dependable shopping company.
D. Amazon needs to adjust packaging strategy.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Ways for Amazon to Recycle
B. Responsibility for Amazon to Take
C. Directions of Using Amazon App
D. The Reality of Amazon Recycling

Advertising involves employing persuasive techniques to get consumers to buy products services and ideas. As mass-produced goods flood in the market, companies use advertising to encourage consumers to see a necessity to buy the products they sell, thus persuading people to buy things that they do not really need. As such, advertising has made us wasteful.
Advertising has encouraged the shift from needs-based to wants-based production, leading to wasteful consumerism. Advertising techniques that get consumers to buy more to obtain greater discount, often encourage consumers to buy what they do not need to enjoy more benefits. For one, tech companies are constantly producing new products and their advertisements highlight the positive features of the latest models, persuading consumers to throw away their old devices and purchase new ones. Similarly, advertising constantly promotes new trends and styles, encouraging people to discard their out-of-fashion items for trendier ones. In short, advertising develops a false need for people to always follow trends, leading to waste.
Advertising also encourages an addictive behaviour that leads to repetitive buying. To persuade buyers to repeat their purchase companies dangle incentives such as limited-time discounts, promotions and coupons (优惠券). Buyers who do not want to miss out on a good deal, would buy again even if they have no need for the product. A loyalty programme is another effective form of advertising that encourages repeat purchases. Since buying more will lead to the increase of loyalty points, customers will return regularly to purchase items. As loyalty points expire (到期) customers will be driven to buy more even if they do not need them, so that they can make use of the loyalty points. As such, advertising persuades consumers to buy things that they do not need, leading to more waste.
There is no doubt that advertising has a strong influence on buyers, encouraging endless unnecessary consumption. Perhaps, to lower the effects of advertising, buyers should be more aware of the influence that advertising tricks have over them and put a stop on unnecessary spending. It is time for buyers to take control.
12. How does advertising lead to wasteful consumption?
A. Encouraging consumers to buy their necessities.
B. Providing consumers with possible financial help.
C. Leading buyers to change consumption patterns.
D. Uniting companies to conduct cheating to buyers.
13. What can be inferred about “a loyalty programme” from paragraph 3?
A. It is a technique to test customers’ loyalty.
B. It is a company’s trick of goods promotion.
C. It brings customers many practical benefits.
D. It helps companies speed up renewing goods.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards advertising?
A. Critical. B. Supportive. C. Objective. D. Unconcerned.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Consumption contributes to advertising.
B. Production depends on consumers’ needs.
C. People’s purchasing power increases a lot.
D. Advertising makes wasteful consumption.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One week, we participated in a program that aimed to bring students fun and also strengthen their courage. On the third morning, we left our camp for a hike. We picked our way along a stream in a park. There were six of us. Tall and strong, Sam led the way.
After a while, we found a small waterfall and some smaller kids playing in the pool below together with their camp leaders. Forked ribbons of water (分叉的带状水流) leapt about three meters into the pool.
We settled ourselves on a large stone above the waterfall. We unpacked our bags and spread out food, eating and laughing. Minutes later, the others carried all the food and attempted to jump across the stream above the waterfall. Soon, they crossed the first narrow ribbon of water and were now standing on the rocks that bordered the second channel.
To me, the second channel looked so wide! Scared, I decided to stay right where I was. But they yelled back, “Come on over here! If you want any juice, that is!” I was thirsty. Slowly, I picked my way across a group of rocks till I reached a flat stone opposite where they were grouped. All had their backs to me; they were now busy aiming small stones at a fallen tree on the bank.
I glanced down. The very cold water was running past the stone, inches away from my feet. I looked across the belt of water towards the tempting fruit juice! This sight inspired me to take action. I bent down, tensed myself to leap, and then glanced towards the left side.
Barely two meters away was the waterfall. Although it was small and there were adults below, I still feared. My knees trembled; I drew back a couple of paces, staring at the running water.
“Come along, Jimmy!” Sam said in a gentle voice. I looked up. Sam stood on the other side, barely four feet away from me. He must have seen me hesitating on the edge of the stone and sensed my terror at jumping across this little stream! Embarrassed, I took off my glasses.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I wiped them, searching for a reason to avoid crossing the water.
