Afterwards the teacher gave each of the students three more ribbons and instructed them to spread this recognition ceremony. One of the boys in the class honored a junior executive in a nearby company for helping him with his career planning and later that day the junior executive went to see his boss, who had been noted as being kind of a bad-tempered fellow. He told his boss that he deeply admired him for being a creative genius. Then the junior executive placed the blue ribbon on his boss’s jacket. That night the boss came home to his 14-year-old son and sat him down. He said, “The most incredible thing happened to me today. I was in my office and one of the junior executives came in and told me he admired me and gave me a blue ribbon for being a creative genius. Imagine. He thinks I’m a creative genius. Then he put the blue ribbon that says ‘Who I Am Makes a Difference’ on my jacket above my heart. He gave me an extra ribbon and asked me to find somebody else to honor. As I was driving home tonight, I started thinking about whom I would honor with this ribbon and I thought about you, I want to honor you.” “My days are really stressful and when I come home, I don’t pay a lot of attention to you. Sometimes I scream at you for not getting good enough grades in school and for your bedroom being a mess, but somehow tonight, I just wanted to let you know that you do make a difference to me. Besides your mother, you are the most important person in my life. You’re a great kid and I love you!” The astonished boy started to sob and sob, and he couldn’t stop crying. His whole body shook. After a long silence, he looked up at his father and said through his tears, “Thank you, Dad. This blue ribbon means more to me than anything. I love you too.” 24. This blue ribbon means more to me than anything. C Why do some people keep making harmful choices, even when the outcomes are obvious? A new study by UNSW Sydney’s Dr Bressel found that for a small group, the issue isn’t lack of motivation or ability, but rather a subtle but persistent failure to connect their actions with its consequences. The paper, published recently in Nature Communications Psychology, details an online learning game where participants were asked to click between two planets for rewards or to avoid punishment. Researchers observed three behavioural types: Sensitives (avoid bad choices), Unawares (adjust strategies after being told their errors) and Compulsives (still make wrong choices even after learning their mistakes) “Some people don’t learn from experience. Even when motivated to avoid harm, they fail to see their behaviour causes problems.” said Dr Bressel. This study followed past research, which only focused on Australian psychology students, but had key differences: 267 participants from 24 countries (including over 50-year-olds), six-month follow-ups, and post-game surveys on their choices. The same behavioural profiles emerged across cultures and ages. In Australian studies, 35% were Sensitives, 41% Unawares, 23% Compulsives; in the new study, 26% Sensitives, 47% Unawares, 27% Compulsives. Dr Bressel linked more Compulsives to older participants, as cognitive flexibility declines with age. Interestingly, when participants were invited back to play the same game six months later, most showed the same behavioural profile. “That was striking,” said Bressel. “These aren’t just random mistakes. They’re almost like personality types. This is not to say they’re fixed, just that they may require intervention to break.” Researchers confirmed Compulsives’ choices weren’t habits: participants could explain their wrong choices. This points to a deeper issue — a failure to integrate new knowledge to minimise bad outcomes. Dr Bressel noted real life is more complex than the game, but the pattern of ignoring experience and information matches compulsory behaviours. The research has important implications for public health messaging. Many campaigns rely on providing information — about smoking, drinking or financial risks — with the assumption that people will act on it. But this study suggests that for some, information alone isn’t enough. “Standard information campaigns work for most — but not for everyone,” Dr Bressel said. “For compulsive individuals, we may need different intervention.” 27. What was the main purpose of the online learning game? A. To test participants’ ability to follow instructions. B. To compare different reward systems across cultures. C. To examine how people link actions with consequences. D. To measure participants’ motivation to avoid punishment. 28. What can be inferred about “Compulsives”? A. They lack awareness of their mistakes. B. They are unable to explain their behaviour. C. They are less affected by external feedback. D. They struggle to apply what they have learned. 29. What is a striking finding of the new study? A. Cognitive ability declines with age. B. Behavioural patterns are consistent. C. Most participants improve after repeated trials. D. Participants’ behaviours vary greatly across cultures. 30. Which is the best title for the text? A. Understanding Rules, Breaking All. B. Knowing More, Doing Otherwise. C. Recognizing Habits, Acting Well. D. Learning Risks, Behaving Safer. C 28. D 29. B 30. 根据第一段中“A new study by UNSW Sydney’s Dr Bressel found that for a small group, the issue isn’t lack of motivation or ability, but rather a subtle but persistent failure to connect their actions with its consequences. (悉尼新南威尔士大学的布雷塞尔博士的一项新研究发现,对于一小部分人来说,问题不在于缺乏动力或能力,而在于一种细微却持续存在的无法将自身行为与其后果联系起来的失误)”以及第二段中“The paper, published recently in Nature Communications Psychology, details an online learning game where participants were asked to click between two planets for rewards or to avoid punishment. 根据第三段中“Researchers confirmed Compulsives’ choices weren’t habits: participants could explain their wrong choices. This points to a deeper issue — a failure to integrate new knowledge to minimise bad outcomes. 根据第三段中“Interestingly, when participants were invited back to play the same game six months later, most showed the same behavioural profile. D There are multiple enjoyable genres for books and movies, including action and adventure. But we need to stop sleeping on sci-fi. Talk of parallel universes, aliens and space exploration may seem fascinating, yet it’s unapproachable for some people. This surface-level perception prevents many from realizing that the genre extends beyond that, and it’s more relevant to our lives than one might expect. Dissatisfaction with traditional structures is apparent among much of Gen Z. Serious concern surrounds the future of technology, the climate, sustainability, healthcare and a host of other social issues. Current issues and future implications involving pandemic and crises spur even more pessimism. With this disillusionment, we need to use our imagination to help foster the change we seek in the future. One subject which lends itself to the encouragement of that imagination is science fiction. Edward Finn, founding director of the Center for Science and the Imagination, expressed the importance of imagination. “It is a capacity we can build as individuals and collectives, and it is the ignition system for a lot of things we care about: resilience, empathy, and innovation,” Finn said. Finn also expressed why the genre’s ability to make people envision different realities is important for societal progress. “Science fiction plays a valuable role in helping us deal with the present because it pushes us to use our own imaginations,” Finn said. “Experiencing possible futures allows us to see beyond the present and think about the world we should be working towards and the people we want to become.” It is unquestionable that technology is one of the most important aspects of our world and our daily lives. Home technologies and devices like smart phones are constantly evolving to new levels never previously imagined. This continuous improvement and innovation of these technologies parallels an evolving relationship and dependence on it. We need to question unintended consequences technology has in society and use this knowledge to navigate challenges and consider solutions to preventing potential issues in the future. From political and social issues to technological issues and beyond, looking at them through the lens of sci-fi is important for evaluating our present and how we need to innovate and reshape society to progress. Science fiction’s ability to expand our imaginations provides tools to build a more ideal world than the one we currently live in. 31. What can we know from the first two paragraphs? A. Science fiction describes our present living realities. B. People are unable to understand the science fiction. C. Science fiction is short of the enjoyable elements. D. People lack a deep insight into science fiction. 32. What does the underlined word “disillusionment” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. discouragement. B. astonishment. C. disagreement. D. argument. 33. According to the passage, which statement may the author agree? A. Science fiction inspire us to develop technology. B. Imagination contributes to turning future into reality. C. The solutions to the current issues may be reflected in Sci-fi. D. Technology can help prevent possible problems in the future. 34. The author writes this passage to __________. A. reveal a consequence B. suggest a pathway C. introduce a genre D. present a perspective 【答案】31. D 32. A 33. C 34. 根据第二段中“This surface-level perception prevents many from realizing that the genre extends beyond that, and it’s more relevant to our lives than one might expect. 根据前文“Serious concern surrounds the future of technology, the climate, sustainability, healthcare and a host of other social issues. Current issues and future implications involving pandemic and crises spur even more pessimism. 根据第六段中“We need to question unintended consequences technology has in society and use this knowledge to navigate challenges and consider solutions to preventing potential issues in the future. Every family, community, and culture has traditions, customs and practices passed down from one generation to the next. These traditions shape our identity and give us a sense of belonging. ____35____ From cooking recipes to holiday rituals, the methods by which traditions survive and evolve offer a fascinating glimpse into human society. One of the most powerful ways traditions are preserved is through storytelling. Elders share stories of the past with younger generations, often during family gatherings or community events. ____36____ In this way, history becomes alive and personal, ensuring that the values and experiences of previous generations are not forgotten. In many cultures, traditions are also maintained through formal education. Schools may teach traditional arts, crafts, or languages, ensuring that these skills are passed on even when families no longer practice them at home. ____37____ Museums and cultural centers play a similar role, displaying artifacts and offering workshops that bring traditions to life for visitors of all ages. ____38____ Festivals, ceremonies, and public celebrations provide opportunities for entire communities to participate in traditions together. But you may not have time or money to go to a gym on a regular basis. The good news is that today’s technology lets you access fitness classes from the comfort of your home. A quick Internet search will turn up thousands of online fitness classes. These classes let you listen to instructions and watch trainers demonstrate how to do exercises. You can watch videos on your phone, computer or tablet and do the exercises right where you are. All you need is an Internet connection and a space large enough to move around in. Online fitness classes take a wide variety of forms. Some focus on stretches and slow movements. Other classes involve fast aerobic activity, while others build muscle strength. Some require equipment such as weights, but others use only your body. This means that you can choose the class you like. And you can try a different one whenever you like. Some virtual fitness classes require a membership fee, but some are completely free. Anyone can post a fitness video on the Internet. Not everyone knows what they are doing. So it is important to think about who is teaching the class. Try to find trainers who are certified by an organization with a good reputation. I tried some virtual fitness classes several years ago. The reason was simple: convenience. I could do a fitness class at any time of day. I didn’t need to travel to a gym and back, which saved me a lot of time. But being able to work out any time meant I kept putting it off. I’d do everything else first and then the day would be over. I’d never actually get around to exercising. Having to exercise at a definite time means I have to put it on my schedule. So for me, scheduled classes such as those at a gym are helpful. 40. B A teacher in New York decided to honor each of her seniors in high school by telling them the difference they each made to her and the class. She presented each of them with a blue ribbon imprinted with gold letters which read, “Who I Am Makes a Difference”. The teacher gave each student three more ribbons in order to ________. A. teachers have great influences on students B. it is important to express gratitude to others C. everyone needs to be recognized and appreciated D. parents should pay more attention to their children C Why do some people keep making harmful choices, even when the outcomes are obvious? C. Whether it is a national holiday or a local harvest festival, these shared experiences strengthen community bonds and give younger members a chance to learn through participation rather than instruction. However, traditions are not static. As societies change, traditions often adapt to remain relevant. ____39____ For example, traditional clothing may be redesigned with modern materials, or ancient ceremonies may incorporate contemporary music. This flexibility allows traditions to survive while still honoring their original meanings. Understanding how traditions are transmitted helps us appreciate the delicate balance between preserving the past and embracing the future. A. Writing was a turning point in preserving traditions. B. 40. What do people need to have virtual fitness classes? 41. What is the author’s suggestion about choosing an instructor while having virtual fitness classes? 42.
