How do you read? Some people only read dialogue, while others might skip long
sections of text or only read the first and last sentences in a paragraph.Others say they read
each word and revisit the same section two or three times to ensure that they don't miss
anything.
The digital age has had a significant impact on how we read.Surveys show that
Americans read fewer books per year than 30 years ago.Although the rise of social media
communities has increased book sales over the last few years, the average American
spends about 26 minutes reading per day, compared to three hours on the Internet or
watching TV.
Nowadays,we spend more time skimming (and scanning rather than close

reading. Some experts worry about the loss of our ability to slow down and read deeply. So,
is there a“right”way to read?
Skimming is a common strategy (that involves skipping over words and
sections to get the main idea.According to Daniel Willingham,a psychologist at the
University of Virginia, skimming is fine as long as it doesn't affect understanding. That is
enough for most beach reads. For example, they don't require us to recall details of a scene
or deal with many difficult words.Knowing the text type also influences reading strategies.
Those who read a lot of mystery novels can skip sections while still understanding the
story.
Experts often contrast skimming with"close"reading.Close reading requires greater
focus and is usually more time-consuming,making it challenging to stay focused. When
readers do close reading, they actively analyze the text, make connections, and critically
evaluate (the information they read. This level of deep thinking is believed to
activate (different parts of the brain used for understanding, memory, and
problem-solving,leading to a stronger and fuller brain response.
In today's fast-paced digital world, balancing between skimming for efficiency and
close reading for depth can improve our reading experience and learning abilities.
28.What is the main finding of the survey in paragraph 2?
A.People no longer read for fun.
B.People read more books than before.
C.Reading time is far less than screen time.
D.Social media makes reading more popular.
29.What is a“beach read”like?
A.It is easy to read quickly.
B.It has a difficult story.
C.It needs slow,careful reading.
D.It teaches many new words.
30.How is close reading different from skimming?
A.It requires deeper thinking.
B.It is easier to stay focused.
C.It is faster to get information.
D.It works for all kinds of books.
31.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To explain a change in reading.
B.To show the benefits of close reading.
C.To present effects of the digital age.D.To compare two ways of reading.

Have you ever noticed that some people can eat what they want and stay in shape,
while others carefully watch what they eat and still put on weight? How frustrating!
However, scientists are beginning to believe that some people get the ability to stay thin
from their parents.
Scientists say that when some people eat, their bodies will naturally store the excess
energy from food as fat. These people gain weight if they eat more than they need each day.
Meanwhile, other people eat more than they need but their bodies are able to"burn off'the
extra food without making fat,so they rarely have weight problems.
To show that this is true, scientists have experimented on laboratory mice. They gave
the mice a special diet with a lot of fat. Some mice gained weight while the other mice
stayed thin, even though both groups of mice ate the same amount of food and got the
same amount of exercise.Scientists concluded that weight gain seemed to be influenced by
genetic factors. They also believe they have now identified the genes that may cause this
tendency.These genes,according to the scientists,get passed down the generations.Armed
with this knowledge, they believe it may be possible to develop medicines that can target
the genes and stop people from gaining weight.
The study of weight gain is becoming more important as the number of people who
are overweight continues to grow.In the United States, over seventy per cent of the
population have weight problems. This means they are at risk of illnesses such as high
blood pressure and heart disease.
Current medicines for weight control do not work very well because they can have
serious side effects, such as heart problems. However,it takes a long time to develop and
thoroughly test new drugs. Therefore, despite this breakthrough in the study of weight-loss
drugs, scientists and health professionals all agree that currently the best way to control
weight gain is to have a healthy, balanced diet and an active lifestyle with daily exercise.
This will not only help people avoid becoming overweight, but also help them stay healthy
and energetic.

It was a bright and sunny day,but inside the classroom,Tom was not cheerful at all.
He had just received his test results, and they were far from what he had hoped for.His
heart sank as he stared at the disappointing marks.
Tom had always been a hard-working student, and this failure made him feel very bad.
He couldn't understand how he had performed so poorly when he had put in so much effort.
He felt defeated and wondered if he was just not good enough.
As he walked home,he kept thinking about what had gone wrong. He replayed the
moments leading up to the test, trying to figure out where he had made mistakes.Maybe he
hadn't studied the right way?Or perhaps he had been too nervous during the exam?
When he got home,Tom decided to talk to his elder brother,Jack.Jack was always
