My exchange trip to China felt like a fantasy movie. I had prepared by reading online about trips to China before, yet my experience still surprised me.
My first big surprise happened in Suzhou, our first host city. I had heard it called the “Venice (威尼斯) of the East” and imagined a small town with quiet canals (运河). As soon as I stepped out of the railway station, I was shocked. Suzhou was so huge and modern! Our school stood near ancient canals, where I saw tall glass buildings next to old wooden boats. It felt strange to see both a “village” and a “city” in one place. This contrast (对比) made us look at the city with fresh eyes.
Later, we saw an even stronger contrast in Beijing. My host family lived near the hutongs. These narrow alleys were full of traditional life. Just a short walk away, modern skyscrapers rose into the sky. People say many hutongs are disappearing each year. How lucky we were to visit them!
After these surprises, of course, there were challenges. The biggest one was the language barrier. Simple words like “homework” or “bus stop” were sometimes hard to communicate. Translation apps became my best friends. They helped most of the time, though sometimes the results were funny.
Still, I met kindness everywhere. A stranger helped me find my way during a rainy day at the Summer Palace. A student at a cafe in Beijing spoke English so well that I almost forgot I was abroad. These moments showed me how friendly Chinese people were.
In the end, this exchange trip was not just about studying; it was also about understanding a culture and making friends. I enjoyed every moment and truly can’t wait to visit China again!

D.Stay only with people who speak perfect English.

Our trip to China felt like a fantasy movie. I had read comments online about trips to China before, yet our experience still surprised me.

Today was magical! At the Yuanmingyuan Ruins Park, I tried a special tour using VR technology (技术). It was the world’s first VR tour of Yuanmingyuan.
Thanks to today’s technology, the tour looks quite real, with everything the size of real ones. It shows what Yuanmingyuan is like through eight units. With light “glasses” on, I stepped into history excitedly, with the stones around me turning into a great palace—the “Garden of Gardens”! I could “walk” through famous Yuanmingyuan scenery like Jiuzhou Qingyan and Guanshuifa.
I joined in the immersive (沉浸式地) activity of “Qianlong’s Garden Tour”. Along the way, I saw the cute “Guardian Dragon” and completed fun activities such as collecting “Time Fragments”. This was unlike what other VR experiences could give. I really felt like walking in Yuanmingyuan seeing the beautiful lakes and trees.
From some workers there, I knew this project was from Daxiang Merged Media. And it is the opening work of “Chinese Cultural Heritage VR Large Space”. The creative team worked hard on the forty scenes of Yuanmingyuan.
After the trip, I knew better about Chinese buildings and culture. To me, it’s not only an interesting VR game but also a meaningful trip. I expected to explore more about these gardens’ history and designs.

It was a summer day when I was about 13. Dad took me to visit the Shanghai Natural History Museum. Back then, it was in an old building on Yan’an Road.
Dad used to work at a seafood processing factory. As we walked past the fish specimens, he was excited to share his knowledge. “This fish sells fast,” he told me. “It tastes great.” The other visitors turned to stare (盯着) at us as we walked on.
But when we were back in the hall to see the dinosaurs carefully, Dad was silent. Clearly, these giants couldn’t be eaten. (If they were still alive, we might be on their menu!) The star exhibit was a Mamenchisaurus (马门溪龙). It stood 22 meters tall and held its long neck high. I couldn’t take my eyes off it. Many questions raced through my mind: What did it do all day? How much did it eat? What was our planet like when it was alive? And why did it—and all the other dinosaurs—disappear?
In 2015, the Natural History Museum moved to Jing’an. To celebrate the tenth birthday of its new home, it’s hosting a special dinosaur exhibition where you can see a Mamenchisaurus. But it’s a little different from the one I saw in the old museum. Over time, scientists have learned more about these dinosaurs. Now they believe they couldn’t hold up their long necks very high.
There are still many unknowns about these ancient animals. We keep guessing and piecing together the puzzle. As we learn about their world, we also learn more about our own. Dinosaurs ruled the Earth for about 165 million years. Will humans ever break this record?

“As a new Shenzhener, being led to check out the history of my city is really a wonderful experience,” said a participant in her online blog, after she took part in a cultural tour led by Mary Ann O’Donnell, an American anthropologist (人类学家) who has been based in Shenzhen since the 1990s.
The Shuiwei tour, organized by Handshake 302, a public art organization, was one of a series of tours that will take visitors to a total of seven places of cultural and historical importance in Shenzhen.
Take Metro Line 4 or 7, get off at Fumin Station, walk a few steps, and you will get to the heart of Shuiwei.
“What’s important is not what did or did not happen, but how the stories we tell become history, and how we use the history to shape our identities,” said O’Donnell.
Along the years, people in Shuiwei made a living by fishing and producing sea salt. However, the practical influence of “water” gradually fell off. Around the 1980s, villagers travelled to and from Hong Kong by boat to buy daily necessities or unusual objects and resell them in Shenzhen. Meanwhile, village renovation (革新) and industrialization (工业化) turned Shuiwei into a landlocked region. The village soon changed its livelihood from fishing and agriculture (农业) to manufacturing (制造业) and real estate (房地产业). Hand-shake buildings are everywhere.
The rock museum in the village, which exhibits hundreds of valuable rocks collected from all over the world, also shows the transition from “water” to “Iand” in Shuiwei’s cultural geography, according to O’Donnell.
1.How many metro lines which can take visitors to the heart of Shuiwei?
A.2. B.3. C.4. D.7.
2.What did the writer mention to show the importance of “water” in people’s lives in Shuiwei?
A.hand-shake buildings. B.the rock museum.
C.fishing and producing sea salt. D.manufacturing and real estate.
3.What can we learn from the passage about Mary Ann O’Donnell?
A.She came from America and has lived in Shenzhen for 31 years.
B.She has organized tours to a total of seven places in Shenzhen.
C.She thinks history is closely connected to people’s identities.
D.She believes people in Shuiwei lived a much better life in the 1980s.
4.What does the underlined word “transition” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.价值 B.转变 C.渊源 D.典故

The Three Gorges Dam (三峡大坝), lying on the Yangtze River in Hubei Province, is one of the largest and most amazing engineering projects in the world. It stands proudly between the beautiful mountains of Xiling Gorge, showing the wisdom and hard work of the Chinese people.
The Yangtze River, China’s longest river, often caused serious floods in the past, bringing disasters to millions of people. To solve this problem and create clean energy, the Chinese government decided to build a huge dam.
People began to build the Three Gorges Dam in 1994. And it took over 12 years to complete. Thousands of workers used modern machines and technology to make this dream come true. They moved mountains, changed the river’s path (路径) to build the dam, which is about 2.3 kilometers long and 185 meters high—as tall as a 60-story building!
Today, the dam plays a key role in China. It has greatly reduced flood risks, protecting cities and farmlands. The dam’s power stations produce clean electricity for millions of homes and factories, helping reduce air pollution. Its connected vessel system (连通器系统) helps ships pass. Ships enter a lock (水闸), and gates close. Water level inside the lock rises or falls to match the next section. When the water levels become the same, gates open, and the ship moves to the next lock.
The Three Gorges Dam is not just a dam—it’s a symbol of China’s courage and creativity. Visitors from around the world come to see this modern wonder. Students learn about its scientific achievements and the spirit of teamwork behind it. The dam teaches us that with determination (决心), humans can overcome even the most difficult challenges of nature.

Shanghai is becoming a major place for investment (投资) by international theme park companies, because they expect to make use of China’s growing entertainment and travel markets.
The success of earlier parks has made it easier for more global brands (全球品牌) to set up in Shanghai. For example, Shanghai Disney Resort welcomes over 14 million visitors each year and the number continues to grow. It opened the world’s first Zootopia-themed land in December 2023.
At the same time, LEGOLAND Shanghai Resort is preparing to open this summer. As of March, the company said 80 percent of its ride facilities (设施) had been completed. The park will include eight themed areas with 2,889 LEGO models made from over 85 million LEGO bricks. It’ll include special Chinese feature. For example, it will be the world’s first “Monkie Kid” area, based on the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West.
John Jakobsen, chief operating officer of LEGOLAND Resort, said the company chose Shanghai because the Yangtze River Delta, which also includes Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui provinces, may include nearly 55 million possible customers, showing the strength of China’s consumer (消费) market.
Two more global theme parks are also coming to Shanghai. Warner Bros has teamed up with Jinjiang International, China’s major travel company, to build a “Making of Harry Potter” studio tour. Planned to open in 2027 with an investment of 2.8 billion yuan, this will be the first of its kind in China and the third in the world. Unlike the ones in London and Tokyo, it will include Chinese colour and new digital technology. Another theme park, based on the popular cartoon show Peppa Pig, is also being planned, adding to Shanghai’s growing theme park scene.
China will speed up major investment projects and work harder to support new types of cultural businesses and develop the tourism industry, according to the 2025 Government Work Report. “China has a huge customer base of young people and young families who are strongly interested in new and wonderful entertainment experiences and are willing to pay the bill for high-quality joyful times,” said Dai Bin, president of the China Tourism Academy.
Theme parks in China are also attracting older visitors. Many elderly people now enjoy going to theme parks as the attractions begin to better meet the needs of different age groups. At Shanghai Disney Resort, the number of elderly visitors who bought one-day and two-day tickets in 2023 rose by about 75 percent compared with 2019.
Shanghai’s fast-growing theme parks, like “Harry Potter” and “Peppa Pig” projects, show China’s big market and government-supported growth. By mixing culture with new ideas, they are changing fun parks around the world. They have a brighter future.
1.What does the word “feature” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Quality. B.Colour. C.Support. D.Value.
2.According to Jakobsen, why did LEGOLAND Resorts choose Shanghai for its new park?
A.Because of the beautiful environment in Shanghai.
B.Because of the history and traditional culture in Shanghai.
C.Because Shanghai may attract large numbers of customers.
D.Because it can get more support from the Chinese government.
3.What’s the purpose of the article?
A.To report on Shanghai’s growing theme parks.
B.To compare different theme parks in Shanghai.
C.To warn about Shanghai’s over-investment in theme parks.
D.To receive a lot of support of developing cultural industry.
4.What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) towards the future of Shanghai’s theme park?

A.will live longer on Earth than dinosaurs
B.have lived on Earth for 165 million years
C.will disappear from Earth sooner or later
D.will continue to learn more about dinosaurs
5.What would be the best title for the passage?
