17-year-old Lin Mei loved the festive glow of traditional red lanterns during the Spring Festival. This year, she wanted to make one herself instead of buying a machine-made one. She found an old craftsman, Mr. Zhang, who agreed to teach her. Mr. Zhang gave her bamboo strips, red silk cloth, and a roll of string, then showed her the basic steps of bending the bamboo into a frame. However, Lin Mei’s hands were clumsy—she either broke the bamboo strips or tied the knots too loose. The frame kept falling apart, and she sighed, feeling discouraged.
Just then, Mr. Zhang’s grandson, Xiao Yu, who was around her age, came over with a plate of candied hawthorns. He had been learning lantern-making since he was a kid. Seeing Lin Mei’s frustrated look, he smiled and said, “Don’t worry. Bending bamboo needs gentle force. Let me show you the trick again, and we can make one together.” Lin Mei looked at him gratefully and nodded.

During his summer vacation, Li Hao volunteered at a primary school in a remote village. He found that the school had a small shadow puppet theater club, but the puppets were old and faded, and the stage was too simple. The children lost interest quickly, and the old teacher in charge of the club was worried. Li Hao, who had learned about shadow puppet art in his hometown, decided to help. He collected bamboo and animal skins from the village, and planned to make new puppets with vivid colors. However, when he tried to carve the puppet faces, he found it hard to make the expressions lifelike, and the color dye always faded after being exposed to sunlight. Li Hao felt a little disappointed, but he remembered the children’s eager eyes when they talked about shadow plays and knew he couldn’t give up.

Chen Jia signed up for the National Teenagers Traditional Culture Innovation Contest with her embroidery work—a picture of pandas playing among bamboo, made entirely by hand with silk threads. She had learned Suzhou embroidery from her grandmother for five years, spending hours every day practicing needlework. However, during the preliminary round, some judges thought her work was too traditional and lacked creativity. “It’s just a nice painting with threads, not an innovative work,” one judge said. Chen Jia felt her heart sink. She walked off the stage, holding her embroidery tightly, tears welling up in her eyes.
That night, Chen Jia sat in her room, looking at her grandmother’s old embroidery pieces, which mixed traditional patterns with modern elements. Suddenly, an idea flashed into her mind: she could add LED lights into the embroidery to make the bamboo leaves glow softly at night, and combine traditional patterns with a modern environmental theme. A spark of hope lit up her eyes.

第一层 基础档(保分篇)
Paragraph 1
From that day on, Lin Mei and Xiao Yu practiced making lantern frames every afternoon at Mr. Zhang’s workshop. Xiao Yu taught her to soak the bamboo strips in warm water first to make them more flexible. He also showed her how to bend the strips gently and tie the knots firmly at the corners. Lin Mei followed his instructions carefully. At first, she still made mistakes, but she never gave up. With Xiao Yu’s patient help, her hands became more skillful day by day. Finally, she managed to make a stable lantern frame. They then covered it with red silk cloth and fixed a candle inside.
Paragraph 2
On New Year’s Eve, Lin Mei hung the lantern she made at her doorway. When she lit the candle, the red lantern glowed warmly, lighting up the doorway. Her parents praised her highly, saying it was the most beautiful lantern they had ever seen. Neighbors passing by also stopped to admire it and asked where she bought it. Lin Mei proudly told them she made it herself with Xiao Yu’s help. Looking at the glowing lantern, she felt a deep love for traditional crafts and decided to learn more about lantern-making in the future.
第二层 中档(提分篇)
Paragraph 1
Li Hao asked the old teacher for advice and searched for traditional dyeing methods online. The old teacher told him that adding a little vinegar to the dye could make the colors last longer. Li Hao tried this method immediately, and it worked well. He also learned from online videos that carving puppet faces required precise knife skills, so he practiced carving small wooden pieces every day to improve his hand control. With the help of the children in the club, he collected more bamboo and animal skins. They worked together, cutting, carving and dyeing. Finally, they made a set of vivid shadow puppets and built a bigger stage with a colorful curtain.
Paragraph 2
When the new shadow puppet show was performed, the children cheered excitedly. The new puppets, with bright colors and lifelike expressions, looked amazing on the stage. The story was about a brave rabbit fighting a wolf, and the children were completely absorbed in it. Some even clapped their hands and shouted for the rabbit. The old teacher smiled with tears in his eyes, thanking Li Hao for his hard work. After that, more children joined the shadow puppet theater club. Li Hao felt proud, knowing that he was helping to keep this traditional art alive.
第三层 高档(冲高分篇)
Paragraph 1
Chen Jia spent the next month revising her embroidery work day and night. She carefully unpicked part of the original bamboo pattern and sewed tiny LED lights into the leaves, making sure the lights were hidden and wouldn’t damage the silk threads. She also added some modern elements: she embroidered a few small solar panels on the edge of the work to power the lights, highlighting the environmental theme. To make the panda’s fur look more realistic, she used different shades of black and white silk threads and changed her stitching techniques. Every night, she stayed up late, her fingers sore but her heart full of hope. Finally, her revised work was done.
Paragraph 2
When Chen Jia presented her revised work at the final round, the audience and judges were stunned. She turned on the solar-powered LED lights, and the bamboo leaves glowed softly, making the pandas look like they were playing in a magical forest. The judges stood up and applauded, praising her for combining traditional Suzhou embroidery with modern environmental ideas. One judge said it was the most innovative work he had ever seen. Chen Jia won the first prize. Holding the trophy, she thought of her grandmother and felt tears of joy in her eyes. She knew that traditional art could be given new life with a little creativity, and she made up her mind to keep innovating and promoting traditional embroidery.
