This summer I came face-to-face with three deep-rooted fears: heights, bears, and ageing.
Two friends joined me on a four-day wilderness getaway, and since we were all in our seventies, we decided we’d better go while we still could. Our adventure began with a scary drive up a winding mountain road.
On one hike, I found myself hanging onto a wire on a bridge made of two partly rotten logs, suspended high above rushing rapids. I would never have attempted it without our guide ahead, mouthing encouraging words. Fixing my eyes on her boots, I inched along the shaky logs. Somehow, I made it across, flooded with a rush of intense excitement and huge relief.
Later, after spotting bear tracks, we were told to make loud noises, which soon became a game once the tension faded.
Until suddenly, time stood still.
We had just crossed a stream when the guide whispered, “There’s a bear.” I looked up in disbelief and saw not one, but two, about ten meters above us — the brown mother in front, her cub behind.
Though scared speechless, I couldn’t help noticing how beautiful they looked in their natural setting. I wondered if it would be my last memory. As they started towards us, we recovered enough to shout and wave our hiking poles. Taken aback, they stopped, and then slowly turned away. Another fear was overcome!
On our final morning, after a quiet, thoughtful walk through the forest, we were asked to bring back a “meaningful” stick, rock, and leaf to share what would “stick” with us, what “rocked,” and what we would “leaf” behind. The bond of friendship would stick with me. Women supporting one another truly rocked. And I hoped to leave some fears behind.
Our guide ended by expressing her admiration, praising not only our fitness but also our positive attitude, and saying she hoped to be like us in another thirty or forty years. Those unexpected words warmed my heart and eased my fear of being “over the hill”. Being valued for what we had accomplished felt like winning an Olympic medal — even if just for participation.
21.How did the author cross the bridge?
A.By taking mindful steps. B.By rushing across it bravely.
C.By using her sense of direction. D.By having the guide drag her over.
22.Why did the bears leave?
A.They were attracted by the natural setting.
B.They were afraid of the noise of the rapids.
C.They were surprised at the group’s actions.
D.They were threatened by the guide’s rocks.
23.What does the underlined phrase “over the hill” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Beyond physical limits. B.Past the peak of youth.
C.Out of place in society. D.Too high to go down.
【答案】21.A 22.C 23.B
根据第三段的句子“Fixing my eyes on her boots, I inched along the shaky logs. (我盯着她的靴子,沿着摇晃的原木一步一步缓慢挪动)”可知,作者是通过小心翼翼地、专注地迈步过桥的。
22.推理判断题。根据第七段的句子“As they started towards us, we recovered enough to shout and wave our hiking poles. Taken aback, they stopped, and then slowly turned away.(当它们朝我们走来时,我们缓过神来,大声喊叫并挥舞登山杖。它们吃了一惊,停了下来,然后慢慢转身离开)”可知,熊离开是因为对这群人的喊叫和挥舞登山杖的动作感到惊讶。
23.词句猜测题。根据最后一段的句子“Those unexpected words warmed my heart and eased my fear of being ‘over the hill’.(那些意想不到的话温暖了我的心,缓解了我对‘over the hill’的恐惧)”以及前文提到的“since we were all in our seventies (因为我们都是七十多岁的人)”和“fear of ageing (对衰老的恐惧)”可知,“over the hill”在这里指的是对年老、不再年轻的恐惧,与“Past the peak of youth. (过了青春的巅峰)”意思最接近。
【六、北京清华大学附属中学2026-2027学年高三9月统练三英语试卷】
“Have you checked the oil in the car?” my father used to say to me, his version of “Hello, hope you are well.” Sometimes our phone calls would begin with an inquiry about the oil and end with one about the oil.
Fathers have a lot of love to give, but it’s often supplied through the medium of practical advice. In my experience: it’s mostly about your motor vehicle. My student car — an old green Toyota bought for $500 — was the vehicle for which my father carved his paternal (父亲的) affections. I bet it’s always been so.
Why can’t fathers just say “I love you” or “It’s great to see you”? The point is: You just have to translate from the language that is Fatherlish. Listen closely enough and the phrase “love you” can be heard in the slightly lengthier “I could come around Saturday and replace the seal around the base of your toilet because I assume that thing is getting really smelly.” The affectionate phrase “You made my life better from the moment you were born” may be rarely heard, but there is the more common “I’ll hold the ladder while you get the leaves off the roof.”
When I was 17, I went on my first road trip in that Toyota. My father stood on the corner. “Highways are dangerous,” he said, “so don’t try overtaking anything faster than a horse and carriage. And take a break every two hours. And every time you stop for gas, you really should check the oil.” At the time we thought his speech was pretty funny and would repeat “horse-and-carriage” every time I sped up to overtake some other speeding vehicles.
Dad’s long gone now. But after all these years, I realize that I have owned a copy of the Fatherlish-to-English dictionary. I’d have understood that the speech my friend and I so ignored was simply dad’s attempt at affection.
21.According to the author, a typical father’s greetings may start with “________”.
A.Look who it is!
B.Everything OK?
C.Hi, sweetheart!
D.How’s the leak in the ceiling?
22.What did the author’s old Toyota mean to his father?
A.A symbol of his son’s admiration.
B.A medium for his paternal love.
C.A sign of a modernized lifestyle.
D.A turning point in the family life.
23.Why does the author mention certain daily phrases in Paragraph 3?
A.To show the fatherlish’s influence on kids.
B.To compare different versions of fatherlish.
C.To illustrate a dad’s loving concern for kids.
D.To prove the usefulness of a dad’s greetings.
根据第一段“‘Have you checked the oil in the car?’ my father used to say to me, his version of ‘Hello, hope you are well.’ (“你检查车里的机油了吗?”父亲以前常对我说,这是他表达“你好,希望你一切都好”的方式。)”及第二段“Fathers have a lot of love to give, but it’s often supplied through the medium of practical advice. (父亲们有很多爱可以给予,但往往通过实用的建议来表达。)”可知,典型的父亲式问候往往不直接表达情感,而是通过询问或关心生活中的具体琐事、实际问题来体现。D选项“How’s the leak in the ceiling? (天花板漏水修得怎么样了?)”契合这种通过关心实际问题来表达问候的特征。
22.细节理解题。根据第二段“My student car — an old green Toyota bought for $500 — was the vehicle for which my father carved his paternal (父亲的) affections. (我那辆500美元买来的旧绿色丰田学生车,承载着父亲倾注的父爱。)”可知,这辆旧丰田车对父亲来说,是他表达对儿子父爱的媒介。
23.推理判断题。根据第三段“Why can’t fathers just say ‘I love you’ or ‘It’s great to see you’? The point is: You just have to translate from the language that is Fatherlish. Listen closely enough and the phrase ‘love you’ can be heard in the slightly lengthier ‘I could come around Saturday and replace the seal around the base of your toilet because I assume that thing is getting really smelly.’ (为什么父亲不能直接说“我爱你”或者“见到你真好”?关键在于:你要读懂父亲式语言。只要仔细听,就会听到“我爱你”这句话被稍长一些的表达所替代,比如:“我周六过来帮你换一下马桶底座的密封圈,因为我猜那个东西开始发臭了。”)”可知,作者列举这些日常话语,是为了举例说明父亲是如何通过关心日常琐事来表达对孩子深沉的爱与关心的。

DOWNLOAD THESE APPS
Our brains need challenging tasks to stay sharp. And thankfully, there’s an app for that — many, actually. Alvaro Femandez, CEO of market-research firm Sharp-Brains, suggests trying ones other than the games you usually play. “If you’re doing something that brings novelty, variety and a level of effort, you’re on the right path.” Here are three apps to get your brain going — and three more to help it gear back down.
BrainHQ
This app serves up short tests to identify your weak spots — be it memory or brain speed — and then offers suitable games to help you improve. Studies have shown users have the memory of a person 10 years younger, and have an easier time following a conversation in a crowded room.
Lumocity
Launched in 2007, this popular app with over 100 million users offers dozens of games and puzzles that focus on different brain skills. Completing tangram puzzles will help build your problem-solving abilities, matching games boost memory, and reordering numbers hones your mastery of math.
Cognifit
This app offers fun brain games that help boost a dozen skills, including concentration, memory, reasoning and coordination. (It even promises to help you become a better driver!) Additionally, Cognifit features tailored regimens for specific conditions, including Parkinson’s, “chemo brain,” depression and ADHD.
Calm
True to its name, Calm contains breathing exercises, 3-to-25-minute guided meditation sessions and stories designed to help you fall asleep. Actor Mathew McConaughey voices one such tale, called “Wonder”.
Headspace
This app has hundreds of guided meditations for every need: two-minute mini-sits, SOS sessions for moments of serious stress and versions for walks. For the end of the day, Headspace offers 45-minute podcasts that use calming visualizations and sounds to help you nod off.
10% Happier
Inspired by ABC news anchor Dan Harris’ bestselling book, this app includes more than 500 guided meditations, as well as short videos to keep you motivated — and the option to text with a coach.
21.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.Calm, Headspace and 10% Happier can help users improve sleep quality.
B.The users of BrainHQ are ten years younger than those who don’t use it.
C.Both Lumocity and Cognifit can improve users’ memory through games.
D.In Calm, users can watch Mathew McConaughey act in the story “Wonder”.
22.“Jane is a senior three student. Since the beginning of school, she has been unable to concentrate in class, depressed and not very interested in anything.” Which of the following apps may be best for her?
A.Calm and Headspace. B.Cognifit and 10% Happier.
C.BrainHQ and Cognifit. D.Lumocity and 10% Happier.
23.This passage is more likely to be seen in ________.
A.the health page of a newspaper B.a feature in a technology journal
C.an analysis from a medical magazine D.research from a university publication

根据Cognifit下面的“This app offers fun brain games that help boost a dozen skills, including concentration, memory, reasoning and coordination. Additionally, Cognifit features tailored regimens for specific conditions, including Parkinson’s, “chemo brain,” depression and ADHD.(这款应用提供有趣的脑力游戏,有助于提升十多种能力,包括专注力、记忆力、推理能力和协调能力。此外,Cognifit针对特定状况提供定制疗法,包括帕金森综合征、化疗脑、抑郁症以及注意缺陷多动障碍)”以及10% Happier下面的“Inspired by ABC news anchor Dan Harris’ bestselling book, this app includes more than 500 guided meditations, as well as short videos to keep you motivated — and the option to text with a coach.(这款应用受美国广播公司新闻主播丹·哈里斯的畅销书启发,包含500多个引导式冥想,还有短视频激励用户,并且可以选择和教练短信沟通)”可知,Jane上课无法集中注意力、情绪低落且对任何事提不起来兴趣,Cognifit可应对注意力和抑郁问题,10% Happier有冥想、激励视频并且还可咨询教练,可以帮助提升兴趣,最适合她。

The University of Macau (UM) warmly welcomes exchange students from its global partner institutions to experience academic life in our unique cultural environment. As an incoming exchange student, you’ll have the opportunity to study for one or two semesters without paying tuition fees, while earning credits that can be transferred back to your home institution.
To begin the application process, you must first be officially nominated (提名) by your home institution’s exchange office, as UM doesn’t accept direct applications from individuals. The nomination package should include documents that showcase your academic background and study plans. Academic Immersion (AIM) is a three-week non-credit residential program for students to focus intensively on a single academic topic. All three tracks combine classroom work with hands-on experiential learning activities. Students must be entering Grade 11 or Grade 12 in fall 2027.
Summer Challenge is a two-week residential or online program in which students take two non-credit seminars of their choice and experience college life. Students must be entering Grade 12 in fall 2027.
Summer Preview is a one-week non-credit residential program in which students explore one subject of interest while previewing the college experience. Students must be entering Grade 9 or Grade 10 in fall 2027.
Our Summer Term’s programs provide students with rigorous and collaborative college life experiences that enable them to gain a strong sense of their personal and academic potential.
