Every month we interview someone about their experiences of living abroad. This month we are speaking to Brian, a British guy, who worked in Aspen, an up-market ski resort in the state of Colorado.
Brian, how did you get the job?
Well, I was working for an oil company in Galveston, Texas, when there was a fall in the industry and I lost my job. I didn’t know what to do and was about to go back to England when a friend phoned to say he needed someone to manage his bar in Aspen, Colorado. I happened to have nothing better to do, so I decided to go for it.
Could you describe a typical day for you in Aspen?
When I first got there, I tried to do as much skiing as possible. I’d get up fairly early, about 8:30, go down to get some breakfast, get all my gear on, and head out to the slopes. I’d come back about 1 p.m and get some lunch. I opened the bar around 3 p.m. But after a few weeks of that, I got pretty tired, so I did a lot less skiing.
What was the work like?
It was all fairly easy. I was in charge of about four other bartenders, and we worked till 12 midnight. After closing the bar, it took about an hour to get everything cleaned up. I usually got to bed about 1:30, unless I decided to go for a night out on the town.
What were the best things about working in Aspen?
Well, I loved the job. I got to meet loads of really interesting people and made lots of useful contacts. Also, the weather is great: blue skies and cold weather—which is great for skiing as the snow doesn’t melt too much in the afternoon. And because Aspen is so expensive, it never gets too crowded.
1. Why did Brian decide to work for the bar?
A. Because he wanted to stay in America.
B. Because he wanted to earn more money.
C. Because he lost his job in the oil company.
D. Because he had experience in managing bars.
2. How long was the bar kept open on a typical working day?
A. 7 hours. B. 8 hours. C. 9 hours. D. 10 hours.
3. What did Brian like about working in Aspen?
A. The convenient transport. B. Meeting interesting people.
C. Getting free ski passes. D. The short working hours.
B
Judith Allen was one historian whose sudden and untimely death in London has shocked and saddened many historians.
I first met Judith in 2006 when I was working at the Menzies Centre at King’s College London. Thrilled to have struck up a friendship with a scholar whose work had been extremely important to my History PhD, I was invited to her London flat for brunch. I was a little surprised to discover on arrival that this would not be an intimate occasion, but the crowd made sense when our hosts announced that this was not an ordinary brunch gathering but their wedding. It was a warm and happy celebration and there was a lot of laughter.
Some months later Judith was invited as a speaker at a conference on feminism (女权主义). Her lecture turned out to be a great success, showing people’s interest in her topic and her fame in Britain. Ours was a short and quick friendship in Judith’s richly connected and intellectually active life, but her generosity and insights have stuck with me.
When I returned to Australia, her ongoing companionship took the form of books, chapters and articles that have always been close to hand. When I had started my PhD in 1999, Allen’s writings were models of feminist history that made it seem possible to write my own history of the pregnant body. Her thoughts in feminist and belief in poststructuralist approaches (后结构主义方式) to historical research offered a path in charting the changing nature of the pregnant body in Australian medicine, law and feminism. As I later restarted my research after receiving my PhD, her historical interventions continued to inform and guide me.
4. What does the underlined part“an intimate occasion” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. A large public celebration. B. A small private gathering.
C. A formal academic exploration. D. A serious business meeting.
5. How did Judith’s work influence the author’s PhD research?
A. It presented large numbers of medical cases.
B. It served to guide her choices of careers.
C. It provided ideas for her own writing.
D. It criticized her research methods.
6. Which of the following can best describe Judith?
A. Strict and serious. B. Friendly and mysterious.
C. Insightful and inspiring. D. Outgoing and distant.
7. Why does the author write the passage?
A. To announce the death of a famous historian.
B. To review a pioneering academic theory.
C. To respond to a widespread doubt.
D. To remember an important friend.

When David Howes thinks of his home city of Montreal, he thinks of the bells and the smell of food being cooked over wood fires. But when he stopped at his local tourism office to ask where they recommend that visitors go to smell, taste, and listen to the city, he just received blank stares. “It seems like they only knew about which things there were to see,” says Howes, the director of Concordia University’s Center for Sensory Studies.
Around the world, researchers like Howes are looking into how nonvisual information defines the character of a city and affects its livability. Oguz Oner, an academic and musician, has spent years organizing sound walks in Istanbul where blindfolded (蒙住眼睛的) participants describe what they hear at different places. His research has figured out locations where vegetation could be planted to reduce traffic noise or where a wave organ could be built to strengthen the comforting sounds of the sea.
Researchers use various ways to get people’s feelings towards the sensory experiences. But as data collection becomes more widespread, many experts warn the public about privacy. Fairness and inclusion also come into play when determining whose sensory experiences should be included into urban planning. Poor urban communities have typically suffered noise and odor pollution from highways and factories, yet they are also often targeted by noise complaints, for example, when their neighbourhoods gentrify (贵族化).
“Sensory perceptions are not neutral, or simply biological; whether we find something pleasant or not has been shaped culturally and socially,” says Monica Montserrat Degen, an urban cultural sociologist at Brunel University London. Degen uses the example of a London neighbourhood where cheap restaurants that served as hangouts for local youth were replaced by fashionable cafes. “It used to smell like fried chicken,” she says, but new comers found it annoying rather than welcoming. “Now it smells like cappuccinos.”
8. Why did Howes receive blank stares?
A. They didn’t know he was an expert.
B. They didn’t understand his language.
C. They focused mainly on visual attractions.
D. They were not trained to answer his question.
9. What is the finding of Oguz Oner’s research?
A. Traffic noise is the largest pollution.
B. Visual tourism can’t define city character.
C. Sound research helps improve city livability.
D. Ordinary people can’t enjoy the wave sound.
10. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Concerns in urban planning. B. Challenges in urban life study.
C. Methods for collecting sensory data. D. Noise pollution in poor communities.
11. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. People decide the smell of his neighbourhood.
B. Technology can solve problems of sensory data.
C. Sensory experiences remain relatively constant.
D. Sensory judgments in urban planning reflect culture.
D
Languages are like living organism, developing over time. Charles Darwin himself noted the similarities.“The formation of different languages and of distinct species,” he writes in The Descent of Man,“are parallel (平行的).”
Now, new research in Nature Ecology & Evolution shows that the similarity runs deeper.Islands, long recognized as drivers of biological diversity (多元化), are just as much engines of linguistic (语言学的) diversity. Drawing on a database of languages from more than 13,000inhabited (有人居住的) islands, the study shows that some of the same patterns hold true in both life and language.
In 1967, biologists proposed that the number of plant and animal species on any given island depends largely on two factors: its size and its distance from the mainland. The larger the island, the closer to continents, the more species it has. In line with the first principle, Lindell Bromham, leader of the study, and her colleagues found that the number of languages on an island increases with area. As for the second, they didn’t find a direct relationship. This is probably because, while plants and animals only come to islands by chance, humans do it on purpose.
Island languages tend to have far fewer phonemes (音位) than mainland ones. Perhaps these languages lose phonemic diversity in the same way that populations lose genetic diversity when they separate from the mainland. Another possibility is that in faraway populations, there are not many neighbouring languages to mix, so speakers don’t need as many. Yet another difference between island languages and species is that plants and animals are going extinct at a worrying speed, with 50 percent of endangered species living on islands. Languages are also in danger, but based on this new study, island languages are no more endangered than those on the mainland.
Nevertheless, Bromham says that protecting island languages is crucial.“We want to highlight how amazing it is that we have all these different solutions to human communication.Any language loss is a loss for all of us,” she says.
12. What does the new research show?
A. Darwin’s theory is supported by linguistic data.
B. Inhabited islands are home to different languages.
C. Languages and species develop at the same speed.
D. Islands drive both biological and linguistic diversity.
13. The reason for the indirect relationship between language and distance to mainland is
A. Islands’ diversified races
B. Species’ accidental death
C. Human’s intentional arrival
D. Languages’ unlimited spread
14. What is the feature of island languages compared with the mainland ones?
A. Globally spread. B. Highly endangered.
C. Linguistically mixed. D. Phonemically reduced.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Island languages are endangered.
B. Island languages are underdeveloped.
C. Islands are the laboratories of biodiversity.
D. Islands are the engines of language and life.

【答案】4. B 5. C 6. C 7. D

【答案】8. C 9. C 10. A 11. D

【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Sensory perceptions are not neutral, or simply biological; whether we find something pleasant or not has been shaped culturally and socially(感官认知并非中立或单纯的生理反应;我们觉得某事物是否令人愉悦,是受文化和社会因素影响的)”可知,从最后一段我们能推断出城市规划中的感官判断反映了文化。故选D。

【答案】12. D 13. C 14. D 15. D

When Modern Technology Meets Intangible Cultural Heritage
Last Friday, our school organized a visit to the City Science Museum, where an exhibition themed “Modern Technology and Intangible Cultural Heritage” was held. More than 200 students took part in the activity, guided by our English teachers.
The exhibition presented traditional crafts such as paper-cutting, shadow puppetry and sugar painting with the help of modern technologies. Through VR headsets, we experienced ancient workshops, while AI screens showed how masters create their works step by step. The most impressive part was the AR interaction—we “painted” virtual sugar art on tablets, with the effect vividly simulating real molten sugar.
This activity bridged tradition and technology, deepening our love for intangible cultural heritage and inspiring us to protect it with innovation.
