第二节 (满分25分)
【参考范文】
Paragraph 1:
Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised. “Mum, why are you so generous to this stranger while so mean to me when I asked for a yoghurt?” I explained gently that the man had no home or food in the cold, and a little help might warm him up. If we were blind to the poor man’s situation he would be freezing. We could spare five dollars even if we were financially stressed. Finally, my son nodded and fixed his eyes on his yoghurt.
Paragraph 2:
On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn’t have done. He took his yoghurt and handed it to the man outside his window. Even if it was just a matter of a few spoonfuls of yoghurt, it was all he had, and he gave it to someone who needed it more than he wanted it. He showed me that I am doing well as a mother. There are always blessings to count if we open our eyes, and we always have the opportunity to be a blessing for someone else.

When 19yearold Sophia Giorgi said she was thinking of volunteering to help the MakeAWish Foundation, nobody understood what she was talking about. But Sophia knew just how important MakeAWish could be because this special organization had helped to make a dream come true for one of her best friends. We were interested in finding out more so we went along to meet Sophia and listen to what she had to say.
Sophia told us that MakeAWish is a worldwide organization that started in the United States in 1980. “It's a charity that helps children who have got very serious illnesses. MakeAWish helps children feel happy even though they are sick, by making their wishes and dreams come true,” Sophia explained.
We asked Sophia how MakeAWish had first started. She said it had all begun with a very sick young boy called Chris, who had been dreaming for a long time of becoming a policeman. Sophia said lots of people had wanted to find a way to make Chris's dream come true—so, with everybody's help, Chris, only seven years old at the time, had been a “policeman” for a day.“When people saw how delighted Chris was when his dream came true, they decided to try and help other sick children too, and that was the beginning of MakeAWish,” explained Sophia.
Sophia also told us the Foundation tries to give children and their families a special, happy time. A MakeAWish volunteer visits the families and asks the children what they would wish for if they could have anything in the world. Sophia said the volunteers were important because they were the ones who helped to make the wishes come true. They do this either by providing things that are necessary, or by raising money or helping out in whatever way they can.

27. Which of the following is TRUE about MakeAWish volunteers?
A. They are important for making wishes come true.
B. They try to help children get over their illnesses.
C. They visit sick children to make them feel special.

Two billion children in the developing world can’t receive good education—the key to human development. However, technology offers an answer which allows the poor in developing countries to learn. It is a tool which holds the ability to change the lives of the poor, as it provides a means of learning and communicating.
Educational programs must break away from old systems. New companies such as One Laptop(笔记本电脑) Per Child(OLPC), an organization founded by MIT Professor Nicholas Negroponte have been active in solving the world’s education problem.
The Internet has changed the world, allowing educational services to help with the global fight against poverty. Khan Academy is one such service. Like OLPC, it is an organization founded by Harvard Business School graduate Salman Khan with the task of “providing a worldclass education to anyone, anywhere”. The education offered includes a large number of mathrelated topics.
The GMAT Pill Review is another company that trains MBA candidates(应考人) worldwide to prepare for the GMAT exam on both the Quant and Verbal section. Founded by Stanford graduate Zeke Lee, the company offers services which are priced at about 75% less than other similar programs. It allows students from developing countries who might not be able to afford similar courses to have access to these services.
Whether paid or free these services provide educational opportunities to those who would never have had the chance in the past. As a result of the technology revolution(革新), business schools may see more students from different corners of the world. Because of the Internet, people in developing nations have access to better and more affordable educational opportunities. More and more people will try to improve their lives through educational opportunities outside of their homeland—an idea usually uncommon in developing countries.
28. According to the text, technology can ________.
A. improve people’s reading ability B. solve the problems facing the whole world
C. help the poor to reduce poverty D. cause poverty in developing countries
29. We can learn from the text that Khan Academy aims to ________.
A. help the poor pay for good courses B. provide every child with a computer
C. help train MBA candidates D. make everyone receive a good education
30. Which of the following about GMAT Pill Review is TRUE?
A. It only accepts students from developing countries.
B. It was started by Professor Nicholas Negroponte.
C. It charges students about 25 percent of other similar programs.
D. The education includes a lot of mathrelated topics.
31. In the past, people in developing countries ________.
A. had no educational opportunities in their homeland
B. seldom thought of receiving foreign education to change themselves
C. always believed education was of great importance
D. wouldn’t leave their homeland to reduce poverty
D
Students used to be taught shop class, in which they learnt skills like woodworking. Nowadays, most schools have given up shop class in favour of academic subjects. However, the National Science Foundation stem Guitat Project thinks that academic subjects and proficiency(水平/技能)can be combined. This organisation aims to get students excited about science, maths, and the arts all at once, by teaching students how to make a guitar.
Experts forecast that technical skills like the ones used in making the guitars could be in great demand in the future. Unfortunately, many high schools don't offer students access to mechanical design skills, due to the fact that they are not on the list of standardized subjects and the schools can't scientifically assess students' performance. But, is STEM really needed in order to build a guitar? Actually, it's impossible to make a guitar without knowing science and maths.
Joshua Cruz, a design teacher, said that building a guitar also teaches troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. He thinks the STEM Guitat Project provides opportunities to challenge students to apply their own creativity to STEM problems. "I'm still figuring out how we can apply it, "Cruz explained." I think we're going to use a lot of the same theories behind how string and stringed instruments work and try and get them to make stringed instruments of their own, and thus improve their academic performance."
Because of its effectiveness and creativity, the guitar initiative(倡议)was offered the Gerhard Salinger award, which recognises outstanding STEM school programmes."Through this project, we have become part of this community of businessmen, engineers and artists, "said Mark French, one of the six people who received the award for his work with the STEM guitar. "It's a great group and I'm really pleased to be part of it. I get to combine something that I just love doing with an activity that really does make the world a little bit better place. It really does help people."
Thanks to people like Mark French, and to the STEM Guitar Project, the world is a little bit of a better, more educated, and more musical place.
32. Why are mechanical design skills unavailable to high school students?
A. Students are not excited about these skills.
B. Students' performance can't be properly evaluated.
C. They are not necessary for the students' growth.
D. They are of no help to students' academic performance.
33. What benefit can students get from building a guitar?
A. The ability to find faults with others.
B. The skills of making a guitar independently.
C. The opportunity to challenge scientific theories.
D. The improvement of creativity and learning ability.
34. What is Mark French's attitude towards the STEM Guitar Project?
A. Critical. B. Indifferent. C. Positive. D. Doubtful.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. The combination of skills in a project. B. The award for the STEM Guitar Project.
C. The STEM Guitar Project promotes music. D. The STEM Guitar Project benefits students.

Yoghurt
It was a rough week. The price of oil skyrocketed as the temperature dropped sharply in Maine. We were looking at a high of eight degrees that week, and I had missed three days of work so my paycheck was going to be lower than normal. I was stressed, to say the least. I shopped strategically, looking for every possible way to cut pennies so I could buy groceries and keep the house warm.
My eight-year-old son didn’t understand when I told him we were struggling that week. He wanted a special kind of yoghurt, but I didn’t have the extra three dollars to buy it for him. It was the kind of yoghurt with a cartoon kid riding a skateboard on the front of the box, and a mere two spoonfuls in each cup. It was the kind of product that wastes a parent’s money and makes me hate advertising.
I felt guilty as a parent when those big eyes looked at me with confusion, as if to say,“It’s just yoghurt. What’s the big deal?” So I found a way. I put something back as single mothers often do. He got his yoghurt.
On the way driving back from the grocery store, I noticed a homeless man holding a sign by the side of the road. My heart hurt, and I tried not to look at him. I watched people stay away from him on the street and walk by without even meeting his eyes. My son didn’t seem to care much, either. I looked at the man closely then — bare hands grasping a piece of cardboard, snot (鼻涕) frozen to his face, a worn-out jacket. And there I was struggling because I had to buy oil and groceries. But I decided to help. I pulled over to the man and handed him a five-dollar bill.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Paragraph 1:
Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised. ___________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn’t have done. ________________

24. Sophia found out about MakeAWish because her best friend had________.
A. volunteered to help it B. benefited from it
C. dreamed about it D. told the author about it
25. According to Sophia, MakeAWish________.
A. is an international charity B. was understood by nobody at first
C. raises money for very poor families D. started by drawing the interest of the public
26. What is said about Chris in paragraph 3?
A. He has been a policeman since he was seven.
B. He gave people the idea of starting MakeAWish.
C. He wanted people to help make his dream come true.
D. He was the first child MakeAWish helped after it had been set up.
27. Which of the following is TRUE about MakeAWish volunteers?
A. They are important for making wishes come true.
B. They try to help children get over their illnesses.
C. They visit sick children to make them feel special.
D. They provide what is necessary to make MakeAWish popular.
根据第一段中的“because this special organization had helped to make a dream come true for one of her best friends”可知,这个组织帮助了她的一个好朋友。故选B。
25. 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Sophia told us that MakeAWish is a worldwide organization”及“It's a charity (慈善机构) that helps children”可知,MakeAWish是一个国际慈善机构,故选A。
26. 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“She said it had all begun with a very sick young boy called Chris(她说这一切都始于一个名叫克里斯的重病男孩)”可知,创办MakeAWish的想法是由于克里斯,故选B。
27. 细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“Sophia said the volunteers were important because they were the ones who helped to make the wishes come true.(索菲亚说,志愿者很重要,因为他们是帮助实现愿望的人)”可知,所以这些志愿者在帮助人们实现愿望方面是非常重要的,故选A。

【答案】28-31:CDCB
【解析】在发展中国家,众多儿童不能得到优质的教育资源,世界上众多组织试图改变这种现状。
28. 细节理解题。根据第一段中的It is a tool which holds the ability to change the lives of the poor, as it provides a means of learning and communicating.

Thanks to people like Mark French, and to the STEM Guitar Project, the world is a little bit of a better, more educated, and more musical place.
32. Why are mechanical design skills unavailable to high school students?
A. Students are not excited about these skills.

C. They are not necessary for the students' growth.
D. They are of no help to students' academic performance.
33. What benefit can students get from building a guitar?

【答案】32-35:BDCD
【解析】
32. 根据题干原文“many high schools don't offer students access to mechanical design skills, due to the fact that they are not on the list of standardized subjects and the schools can't scientifically assess students' performance”,机械设计技能不可用的主要原因是学校无法科学评估学生表现(选项B)。选项A(学生不兴奋)未提及;选项C(非必要)与文中“technical skills could be in great demand”矛盾;选项D(无助于学术表现)被文中“improve their academic performance”反驳。因此选B。
33. 题干提到“building a guitar also teaches troubleshooting and problem-solving skills”和“apply their own creativity to STEM problems”,以及“improve their academic performance”,这表明学生可提升创造力和学习能力(选项D)。选项A(找别人毛病的能力)错误,因troubleshooting指解决问题而非找茬;选项B(独立制作技能)是过程而非核心益处;选项C(挑战科学理论的机会)未提及,文中强调应用而非挑战。因此选D。
34. Mark French的引语“It's a great group and I'm really pleased to be part of it”和“It really does help people”表达了对项目的积极态度(选项C)。
选项A(技能结合)是手段而非核心;选项B(奖项)是细节;选项C(推广音乐)片面,音乐仅为媒介。因此选D。

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Paragraph 1:
Seeing this, my son became confused and surprised.

Paragraph 2:
On that day, my son performed an act that most adults wouldn’t have done.
