The club also runs a recycling program at school. They put special bins in every hallway for paper, plastic, and cans. The money from selling the recycled materials is used to buy books for a school in a poor area.

A Meaningful Summer
Last summer, instead of playing video games all day, I volunteered at "Sunshine Home", a care center for the elderly. At first, I felt a little nervous. I didn’t know what to say or do.
My job was simple but important. I helped serve meals, read newspapers to those who had poor eyesight, and most importantly, just talked with them. Many of the old people there felt lonely because their families were busy or lived far away. They loved having someone to talk to.
I remember Mr. Li, a 90-year-old man. He taught me how to play Chinese chess and told me stories about his youth. His stories were like history lessons coming to life! I also helped Mrs. Zhang write letters to her granddaughter.
That summer, I learned that helping others doesn’t always mean doing something huge. Sometimes, it just means spending time with someone and listening. I received much more than I gave – friendship, wisdom, and the feeling that I had made a real difference in someone’s life. I will never forget that summer.

The Ripple Effect of Kindness
Have you ever thrown a small stone into a pond? You see a small splash, and then circles of water – ripples – spread out far beyond where the stone hit. A single act of kindness can work in the same way. This is sometimes called the "ripple effect".
It starts with one person. Imagine you help a classmate with a difficult math problem. That classmate feels grateful and later helps another person carry heavy books. The person who received help with the books might then be inspired to volunteer at a community center. The kindness keeps spreading, often in ways you never see.
Scientific studies support this idea. Acts of kindness can improve the mood of both the giver and the receiver. They can even reduce stress and make people feel more connected to their community. In schools where students regularly practice kindness, there is often less bullying (欺凌) and a happier atmosphere.
You might think, "I’m just one person. What can I do?" But history is full of examples where one person’s idea or action started a big change. Starting a recycling program, standing up for someone who is being treated unfairly, or simply smiling at a stranger – these all create ripples.
The next time you have a chance to do something kind, big or small, remember the stone and the pond. Your action might be the one that starts a wave of positive change.
36. What is the "ripple effect" compared to in the passage?
A. A big wave in the ocean.
B. Circles of water spreading from a thrown stone.

D. The sound of a splash.

D. Make people feel stressed.

A. It makes people richer.
B. It improves people’s mood and reduces stress.
C. It helps people get better grades.
D. It makes people famous.
39. What does the author say about "being just one person"?
A. One person cannot do anything.
B. One person’s action can start a big change.
C. We should always wait for others to act first.
D. It is not important.
40. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this article?

1. A
2. C
解析: decide 后接动词不定式 (to do) 作宾语,即 decide to do sth.(决定做某事)。
3. C
elderly(年长的)、disabled(残疾的)、lonely(孤独的)虽然也需要帮助,但根据“live on the streets”的提示,最直接对应的是“无家可归”。
4. A
spend(花费)、cost(花费)、use(使用)均不符合为动物收容所“筹”钱的语境。
5. C
It is + adj. + to do sth.
6. A
possible(可能的)、different(不同的)不符合语境;homeless(无家可归的)完全不相关。

A Small Action, A Big Difference
Last month, our class decided to make a difference. We noticed our school park was full of litter. So, we organized a clean-up activity.
One Saturday morning, about twenty of us gathered there with gloves and bags. We worked in teams to pick up plastic bottles, paper, and cans. Some students even made signs reminding people to keep the park clean.
After three hours of hard work, the park looked beautiful again. We felt tired but very proud and happy. This experience taught me that protecting our environment starts with small actions. Everyone’s effort matters. Together, we can make our community a better place.
