One day, Dr. Simpson was lecturing, and we were dutifully taking notes. Suddenly he stopped and fixed a cold stare on a student in the second row. The student stared back, crossed his arms over his chest, and lifted his chin. “What is your problem, young man?” the professor demanded. “You,” the student replied. “Me?” “Yeah, you and the boring course you’re teaching.” I sat in terror and surprise. I had never seen such a scene. “Get out of my class!” Dr. Simpson thundered. The student snatched up his books and headed toward the classroom door. The door slammed shut, and Dr. Simpson continued his lecture. I didn’t hear a word he said. My complete attention was on the student who had stormed out of the room. Five minutes or so went by; Dr. Simpson stopped his lecture. He scanned the class and asked, “What have I been lecturing about for the last five minutes?” I didn’t know. Nobody knew. The class was silent. Then, Dr. Simpson said, “John, go tell Fred that he can come back in.” As Fred was making his way back to his seat, Dr. Simpson thanked him and complimented him on an excellent acting job. As it turned out, they had cooked it up ahead of time. We sat in stunned silence. And then, Dr. Simpson said something I would never forget. “You weren’t listening to my lecture. None of you were. You were all thinking about Fred and our little dust-up. Remember that when you start teaching, any time there is a disruption in class, you lose your students’ attention.” It was one of the most useful lessons I ever learned in college. Over the years, my class was interrupted by fire alarms and other distractions. Every time I lost the class’s attention, I flashed back to the lesson Dr. Simpson taught me that day. I gave my students five minutes to discuss what had happened and then said cheerfully, “Let’s get back to today’s lesson plan!” 61. Why didn’t the author hear Dr. Simpson’s lecture after Fred left? C Across northern Australia, a great number of freshwater crocodiles are dying, with some populations down by 70%. That’s because the animals are eating a kind of super-poisonous toad (蟾蜍) that humans brought to the continent decades ago. Georgia Ward-Fear, an ecologist at Macquarie University in Sydney, has witnessed the death of the crocodiles first-hand. The loss of so many crocodiles is a problem because they sit atop the food web, “When they decline,” Ward-Fear says, “we see this huge hole in the ecosystem.” When about a hundred cane toads were first brought from Hawaii to Australia in 1935 people had high hopes that the toads would feast on the beetles damaging the local sugarcane crop. But the toads were a total failure. “They didn’t control the beetles,” says Ward-Fear. “Instead, they started spreading across Australia.” Today, an estimated 200 million cane toads are hopping around the continent. She says that at first, no one really noticed the invasive toads’ spread. But then a whole range of animals started dying—including lizards, snakes, a furry cat-size marsupial called a quoll and lots of freshwater crocodiles. The cause of death was a potent brew of toxins (一种强效毒素混合物) that the cane toads produce and store in their bodies. A crocodile’s first encounter with a toad is always deadly, so the animal has no chance of learning. But Ward-Fear and her colleagues wondered whether there might be a way to warn the crocodiles somehow. To teach the crocodiles, the team members needed bait (诱饵). But they couldn’t use a full cane toad loaded up with poisons. “So we cut off the top half of their body,” says Ward-Fear, “so that crocodiles are still getting the smell and the taste, but we’ve taken the most poisonous parts off. We injected something that makes the crocodiles feel sick. It’s essentially food poisoning.” In a study published in Proceeding of the Royal Society B, Ward-Fear and her colleagues report that they’ve managed to reduce crocodile death rates by as much as 95%—by feeding the animals dead cane toads that have been changed to cause food poisoning. The crocodiles came to associate the toads with a temporarily unpleasant feeling, making them less willing to eat a deadly toad in the future. 66. What would be a suitable title for the text? A. Crocodiles Are Suffering from Food Poisoning. B Cane Toads Present a Great Threat to Crocodiles. C. Scientists Find a Way to Save Crocodiles in Danger. D. Scientists Try to Control the Number of Cane Toads. 67. Why can’t crocodiles learn to avoid cane toads naturally? A. They are not smart enough to recognize dangers. B. Their first contact with toads is always deadly. C. Cane toads spread too quickly across Australia. D. Toxins from toads are hard to detect. 68. What did Ward-Fear’s team do to the cane toads when making bait? A. They used live cane toads with reduced toxins. B. They removed the most poisonous parts and added a sick-inducing substance. C. They injected the toads with a chemical that kills crocodiles. D. They only kept the top half of the toads’ bodies. 69. What result did Ward-Fear’s study achieve? A. Crocodiles completely stopped eating cane toads. B. The number of cane toads decreased by 95%. C. Crocodile death rates dropped sharply. D. The ecosystem in northern Australia recovered. 70. We can infer from the text that cane toads _______. A. were originally introduced to Australia to protect local animals B. have become a threat to multiple species in Australia C. are now mainly distributed in southern Australia D. produce toxins only when they are attacked D If you’ve ever found yourself scratching your head over a decision when the answer is obvious, now there’s a scientific reason behind it. “The problem is ‘decision fatigue’—a psychological phenomenon that influences the quality of your choices after a long day of decision making, causing indecision or poor choices.” says Evan Polman, a leading psychologist. Physicians who have been on the job for several hours, for example, are more likely to prescribe antibiotics (开抗生素) to patients when it’s unwise to do so. “Probably it’s because it’s simple and easy to write a prescription and consider a patient case closed rather than investigate further.” Polman says. But interestingly, decision fatigue goes away when you are making the decision for someone else. When people imagine themselves as advisers and imagine their own choices as belonging to someone else, they feel less tired and rely less on decision shortcuts to make those choices. “By taking upon the role of adviser rather than decision maker, one does not suffer the consequences of decision fatigue,” he says. “It’s as if there’s something fun and relieving about making someone else’s choice.” “Getting input from others not only offers a fresh idea and thought process; it often also includes riskier choices. While this sounds undesirable, it can be quite good,” says Polman. “When people experience decision fatigue, they have a tendency to choose to go with the status quo (现状).” he says. “But the status quo can be problematic, since a change in the course of action can sometimes be important and lead to a positive outcome.” In order to achieve a successful outcome or reward, some level of risk is almost always essential. “People with decision fatigue will likely choose to do nothing over something,” he says. “That’s not to say that risk is always good, but it is related to taking action whereas decision fatigue certainly leads to inaction.” “Just because you can make good choices for others doesn’t mean you’ll do the same for yourself,” Polman cautions. “Research has found that women negotiate higher salaries for others than they do for themselves.” he says, adding that people slip in and out of decision roles. 71. Decision fatigue may cause people to make decisions that are _______. A. reasonable B. objective C. unwise D. smart 72. Which of the following may be made by a person with decision fatigue? A. A consumer buys a lot of food to prepare for a dinner. B. A judge makes a less convincing judgment late in the day. C. A student plans to finish his math homework in the morning. D. A physician advises the patient to drink more water after examination. 73. When do people feel less decision fatigue? A. When they take decision shortcuts. B. When they have advisers to turn to. C. When they have major decisions to make. D. When they help others to make decisions. 74. What are people likely to do when decision fatigue sets in? A. They stop trying anything new. B. They adopt a totally new idea. C. They tend to make risky decisions. D. They turn to physicians for advice. 75. What does Polman say about taking some risks in decision making? A. It will often end in regret. B. It is likely to cause serious consequences. C. It will enable people to be more creative. D. It is necessary to achieve successful outcome. 五 将表格中单词短语的对应字母选项填涂到答题卡对应题号中。(每题0.5分,共5分) A. missing out B. taken away C. catching up on D. taken over E. occurred to F. concerned with G. have a say on H. was up to 76. It’s clear that people have a lot of misconceptions (误解) about community colleges. Many people think community colleges are only for people who couldn’t get into a four-year school. But it is not true. In high school, I always got A’s. But when it came to applying to colleges, I had no idea what I wanted to major in and couldn’t justify spending thousands of dollars at a 4-year school until I knew what I wanted to do. My parents were very supportive of my decision to attend the community college. Some people will ask, “Since the community college is cheaper, will you get a good education?” I found that nearly all of my professors taught the same courses at 4-year colleges. My professors were knowledgeable and experienced, and I found many of the courses challenging. Some people think if I attend the community college, I will miss out on the “college experience”. I must admit that this is something I worried about a great deal the summer before college. But I soon learned that the community college, just like any other college, is what you make of it. I strived to make the most of my time at the community college. I also made tons of friends by joining clubs and attending student government meetings. I took a lot of different courses. I had an amazing professor who suggested I take her journalism class. Never having written for my high school newspapers, I dared not take it, but since she was so enthusiastic, I eventually decided to have a try. That one course was all it took for me to realize that I wanted to become a journalist. I look forward to graduating this May to pursue a career in broadcast journalism. Community colleges may not be for everyone, but for me it is a life-changing experience that has helped me discover who I am and the person I hope to become. 86. This beautiful story follows a young prince who leaves his tiny planet and his beloved rose. He journeys through space, visiting several strange planets and meeting different adults. Finally, he arrives on Earth, where he talks with a pilot who has crashed in the desert. Here, he also meets a wise fox who teaches him important lessons about friendship and responsibility. Although it looks like a simple children’s book, its meaning is very deep. It gently reminds us of what truly matters in life: caring for others, seeing with our hearts, and keeping a sense of wonder. The prince’s questions make us think about our own world and choices. It is a short book, but its ideas about love and loss are powerful and stay with you long after reading. I found it both moving and meaningful. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
