At that moment the door of the room flew open and in came four rabbits as black as ink, carrying a small black coffin (棺材) on their shoulders.
“What do you want?” asked Pinocchio.
“We have come for you,” said the largest Rabbit.
“Oh, Fairy, my Fairy,” the Pinocchio cried out. “Give me that glass! Quick, please! I don’t want to die!” And holding the glass with his two hands he swallowed (吞下) the medicine quickly. Then the rabbits had to leave.
After that, the Fairy added, “Pinocchio, tell me how you were in the hands of the robber last time.”
“I had five gold pieces to give to my father, but on the way I met two robbers.” They tied my neck with a rope and hung me to a tree, said Pinocchio. “Where are the gold pieces now?” the Fairy asked.
“I lost them,” answered Pinocchio. As he spoke, his nose became at least two inches longer. “And where did you lose them?”
“In the wood nearby.” At this second lie his nose grew a few more inches.

During my childhood, my mother did something special in the evenings. Sometimes she would make clothes for us, and other times, she made cakes. But one day, she surprised us all by her words. “I’m going to call one neighbor every night.” I was 16 then and couldn’t understand why she would spend her evenings talking to people she hardly knew.

Most foreigners go to the Bund or the Great Wall for their first visit to China. But I have never wanted to follow the crowd. On my friends’ recommendation, I picked an unusual destination: the Tiger Leaping Gorge in Yunnan province. The area is truly one of the country’s natural treasures.
Most visitors to the gorge only took a bus ride along the Jinsha River. To discover its real beauty, however, one must take a hike on the northern side of the gorge. The hike is tiring. It takes most people two days to complete it, and some three. But it would be worth the time and effort. The hike was, for me at least, one of the most memorable trips ever.
The first part of my hike ran through green wheat fields. At this point, it was easy to enjoy the view and take photos. The scenery simply took my breath away.
Then, I reached perhaps the hardest section of the hike. It was called “Twenty-Eight Bends”. Dozens of steep switchbacks (之字形路) snaked up the mountainside. No one was sure where these bends started or ended. Right after I conquered (征服) the 17th bend, I saw a sign that read: “Get ready for another 28 bends!”
There was no need to be afraid, though. Several local villagers were waiting by the side of the path with their donkeys (驴). Anytime a hiker needed a ride, all he or she had to do was hand over a few coins.
After these bends, the hiking path flattened out. The rest of the day was easier. Most people ended their first-day hike at a halfway guesthouse in the early evening, just in time for a beautiful sunset. As another hiker put it, it was “postcard perfect”.
The second day was less tiring. I walked slowly across a bamboo forest that led to a small beach. There were many streams. A waterfall was flowing directly over the path.In the early afternoon, I reached the end of the hike.
If you are looking for natural wonders, plus a bit of adventure, the Tiger Leaping Gorge is definitely for you. And don’t worry—it was named according to a bit of old folklore (民间传说), so you are unlikely to meet a real tiger on your hike!

Teenagers are full of imagination and creativity. Thomas Edison was a teenager when he invented a telegraphic instrument. Tharon Trujillo, 13, of California, is now famous for his new invention in the US.
Trujillo invented a safety device called “the Lock N Block Sliding Door Safety Gate”. It can help keep children and pets from falling through sliding-glass doors.
Trujillo has earned a lot of awards for his invention. Last November, he won the Thomas Edison Innovation Award. He was one of six young inventors introduced into the Student Inventor Hall of Fame in Ohio.
Trujillo was inspired to create the safety gate because of his younger sister. He was watching television one day when his baby sister fell through their open sliding-glass door.
His sister was fine, but “I told my dad there needs to be a safety gate for the sliding-glass door,” said Trujillo. He searched the Internet to see if there was such a device. No other safety gates on the market could fit in a sliding-glass door. So the boy decided to invent one himself.

Pinocchio had a fever. The Fairy took a glass of water with medicine and said lovingly to Pinocchio, “Drink this, and you’ll be up and well.” Pinocchio looked at the glass worriedly and said, “I’d rather die than drink that awful medicine.”

“Ah, now I remember,” replied Pinocchio, “I did not lose the gold pieces, but I swallowed them.”

One evening, I heard her conversation with an elderly lady. She asked about the lady’s dinner and even discussed the flowers in the park. When she finished the talk on the phone, I questioned her what topic she talked, finding them trivial (琐碎). With a kind smile, she explained, “I might be the only person she talked to today. So even the simplest conversations can mean a lot to her.”
It wasn’t until 30 years later that I realized the true meaning of my mother’s nightly calls. The elderly often feel lonely for different reasons. As people age, they may experience the loss of friends and family members. Health problems can make it harder for the elderly to join in social activities. Retirement can also take away everyday activities that were once provided by work. The lonely feeling can be very strong for the elderly. They might feel like they are being forgotten or no longer needed. Without social communication, they may experience sadness and depression.
My mother’s conversations were more than just friendly talks—they were lifelines for lonely old people. Her calls make them know more about the world outside. Her resolution and social skills in communicating were more than I could understand, and I wish I could do better.
1.What unexpected action did the writer’s mother take?
A.She made clothes for her family.
B.She took lessons to learn how to make cakes.
C.She planned to call a different neighbor every night.
D.She wanted to spend more time talking to her family.
2.What did the writer say about her mother and the elderly lady’s conversation at first?
A.It covered a lot of news. B.It was about nothing important.
C.It was only about nature. D.It appeared to be interesting.
3.What does the underlined word “retirement” mean in Chinese?
A.退休 B.社团 C.展览会 D.声誉
4.Why did the writer introduce the living conditions of the elderly in Paragraph 3?
A.To describe their lonely lives.
B.To show their health problems.
C.To show the skills of social communication.
D.To show the importance of her mother’s nightly calls.
5.What can we infer (推断) from the writer’s words at the end of the passage?
A.He didn’t realize the importance of simple kindness.
B.He felt sorry not to spend more time with his mother.
C.He planned to continue doing what her mother did for the elderly.
D.He realized the elderly need experts’ help more than conversations.

1.How many days did it take the author to complete his hike at the Tiger Leaping Gorge?
A.One and a half. B.Two. C.Two and a half. D.Three.
2.Which of the following statements about “Twenty-Eight Bends” is correct?
A.The bends winded up to the top of the mountain.
B.The section is known for its narrow paths.
C.The section wasn’t only made up of twenty-eight bends.
D.The bends started from the green wheat field.
3.According to the article, some villagers were waiting at the end of “Twenty-Eight Bends” to _______.
A.take pictures of travelers for free
B.make money by offering tired hikers a ride
C.introduce the history of the section to travelers
D.warn travelers that the section was very dangerous
4.On the second day of the author’s hike at the Tiger Leaping Gorge, he saw all of the following EXCEPT_______.
A.streams B.a waterfall C.wheat fields D.a bamboo forest
5.Which of the following can be the best title?

1.细节理解题。根据“Most people ended their first - day hike at a halfway guesthouse in the early evening...The second day was less tiring. In the early afternoon, I reached the end of the hike.”可知,作者第一天傍晚在中途的宾馆休息,第二天下午早些时候到达徒步终点,所以作者完成虎跳峡徒步旅行花了两天时间。故选B。
2.推理判断题。根据“Right after I conquered (征服) the 17th bend, I saw a sign that read: ‘Get ready for another 28 bends!’”可知,“二十八弯”这个路段不仅仅只有二十八个弯。故选C。
3.细节理解题。根据“Several local villagers were waiting by the side of the path with their donkeys (驴). Anytime a hiker needed a ride, all he or she had to do was hand over a few coins.”可知,一些村民在“二十八弯”路段等着,通过让疲惫的徒步旅行者骑驴来赚钱。故选B。
4.细节理解题。根据“The second day was less tiring. I walked slowly across a bamboo forest that led to a small beach. There were many streams. A waterfall was flowing directly over the path.”
On November 17, Li Junfei, the 22-year-old winner of the baking event at the 47th World Skills Competition, held a special baking class for 30 students from different countries.
In September, Li competed in the World Skills Competition held in Lyon, France. Often described as the “Olympic of skills”, the competition provides a platform for global youths under the age of 22 to show and exchange their talents.
The competition challenges players to create edible (可食用的) products using limited tools and materials within a set time and space, based on a theme announced two months in advance. This year, with France as the host country, the theme was the Eiffel Tower.
Li Junfei and his team knew that to stand out in a world-class competition, they needed not only solid (扎实的) skills but also a special idea.
They got the idea from traditional Chinese culture, specifically the mortise-and-tenon joints (榫卯结构), commonly used in ancient Chinese architecture (建筑).
Li thought that this creative choice added many challenges because of the nature of baking. “As the bread shrinks (收缩) during baking, its shape changes,” he explained.
