【中考真题】
13-year-old Sarah sits in her yard, laying out her handmade crafts (手工制品) on the table. There are baskets, flower pots, and cloth bags—all made from recycled materials. They are not just creative objects; they’re part of Sarah’s project to make a greener community.
Two years ago, Sarah would pass by a park near her house every day after school. Plastic bottles, empty cans, and broken toys littered the roadside. Seeing this, Sarah felt sad.
One afternoon, Sarah noticed some kids selling orange juice at the park. People stopped to buy it. That was when Sarah got an idea.
“Mom, what if we sell handmade crafts?” she asked excitedly that evening. “Then we can buy trees for our neighborhood with the money!”
With her mom’s help, Sarah started making crafts with great interest, using old boxes, plastic bottles and empty cans. Every day after school, she sat in her yard, waiting for customers. At first, no one came. Sarah felt down, but she didn’t give up.
Later, people began to stop by. A kind woman bought a cloth bag, saying it was perfect for shopping. Kids liked the flower pots, and one boy even asked Sarah to make him a special basket for his toys. By the end of the first month, Sarah had made $150! She bought 30 small trees. Together with her parents, they planted the trees around the park and along the sidewalks.
Now, the neighborhood looks nicer, and the birds have more places to rest. Sarah even teaches her friends how to make eco-friendly (环保的) crafts after school. They organize sales every month to raise money for new projects like bird feeders.
This year, Sarah shared her story at a local community event. “Making a greener community is important,” she said proudly. “If everyone helps a little, we can make our life better.” She believes that no effort is too small when it comes to caring for the environment.

The Smiths woke up earlier than usual. There was something about hiking (远足) that made them feel wide awake and excited to start the day as their eyes were open.
The family had a simple breakfast. They discussed the plan for the day at table. “Dad and I looked at a map last night,” said Mrs. Smith. “We found a nearby trail (小径). There are many interesting things along the way, and best of all, there will be a surprise at the end of the trail.”
“What kind of surprise?” asked Jenny.
“It won’t be a surprise if we tell you,” laughed her mom. “The sooner you get ready to go, the sooner you’ll find out.”
They set out for hiking soon. It was a good day for seeing wildlife. Along the trail, the trees were filled with kinds of birds flying around. Hearing a noise in the grass, they stopped and saw two rabbits crossing the trail. After a while, Mike noticed several monkeys in the trees and Mr. Smith took photos before they ran away.

Golden apples hanging on the backyard tree finally made me understand my father’s silent love. But three years ago, when I was a 13-year-old boy, I thought adults knew nothing about life.
That warm spring day, Dad came home holding a small apple sapling (树苗). “Let’s plant it together,” he said. I shook my head. “Why waste time? The store sells apples ready to eat!” But he smiled, quietly opened the roots.
For weeks, I complained (抱怨) as we watered the weak tree. “It’ll never grow!” I said angrily when the strong summer storms nearly made it fall over. Father simply saved it with bamboo sticks, saying, “Good things take time, just like building a strong house.” At that time, I didn’t get what he meant.
Our final exams were at the end of the term. Since I failed math, I tore (撕) my test paper angrily. “I’m done!” Father found me sitting next to our knee-high tree. Instead of giving long speeches, he pointed at its new leaves. “Do you remember when it almost didn’t make it through the storm? Now it’s standing tall, all because it refused to give up!”
I realized it all of a sudden. I began to study just as the tree grew, slowly yet surely. My father quietly cheered me on. During late-night studying, he’d put energy drinks beside my books. Even without saying anything, his strong hand on my shoulder said it all.

Can you imagine a whole year away from home, from work and school? Maria and Brian traveled 52, 000 miles and visited 18 countries with their four children Leo, 12, Mia, 10, Colin, 7 and Luke,5.
Over the year, the family created many once-in-a-lifetime memories. They rode camels in Mongolia, kayaked (划皮艇) in Cambodia, and flew in a hot-air balloon in Turkey. The memories really matter because unless science makes a breakthrough soon, their children will become blind. They had been diagnosed (诊断) with retinitis pigmentosa (RP), a genetic (基因) disease that would gradually take away their eyesight. The moment the parents learned the news, one said, “Everything we hope for our children has to change.” So the idea of a yearlong trip was born, one that would show the kids the world — while the kids could still see it.
In the early 2022, Maria and Brian left their jobs, rented out (出租) their home for the next year, packed everything they might need for a year on the go and set out with their children. Because the kids would miss more than nine months of school, the plan was that they would study French and math a few times a week. The rest of the time, they’d be learning from the world around them.
Each day during the trip, Maria and Brian watched their kids change. They grew taller and became more confident and outgoing. The family grew closer. When Leo asked his mother what it meant to be blind. Maria said, “It’s like when you have your eyes closed. Being blind doesn’t mean the end of the world. Loud cheers and laughter filled the hall at St. Paul High School. Everyone was excited because Professor LeBlanc from a famous university was putting on an amazing science show!
Two student volunteers stepped forward. The professor gave each of them a metal half-ball with a handle (把手). When the two halves were put together, they formed a round metal ball. There was a small air valve (阀门) on one half. The professor got the air out of the ball, then closed the valve.
“Now try to pull the two halves apart!” the professor said. The two students pulled hard, their faces turning red, but the ball did not separate. More students joined in, but the metal ball stayed closed.
“This experiment (实验) shows the power of air pressure around us,” the professor explained. “Even though we can’t feel it, the air outside is pushing so hard that even eight horses couldn’t pull them apart!”
Next comes the “Freezing Show”. The professor put cabbages and carrots into liquid nitrogen (液氮)—a super-cold liquid (-200℃) that made white smoke. Then he took the vegetables out and threw them on the floor. They broke into small pieces like glass!
The show got even more exciting. The professor created a “-78℃ snowstorm” that made students shake and turned frozen bananas into fire. Then he used electric machines to send smoke rings flying toward the cheering students!

Then, he took out some seeds and said,“Let’s plant two flowers separately. But I use clean water from the lake, and you water yours with dirty water from the pond(池塘).We will see the results in the coming weeks and at that moment you will cheer up.” The son was pleased as he joined his father in planting the flowers right away.
It took them some days to germinate (使发芽) the flower seeds. They cared for them and watched them grow. Later on, they went to the garden. The father said, “Look at the two flowers and tell me your thoughts.” “The boy said unexpectedly, My flower looks healthier than yours. But you used cleaner water. How is that even possible? ” The father smiled and said, “That’s because dirty water from the pond doesn’t stop a plant from growing. Instead, it serves as organic fertilizer (有机肥料) to help the flower grow. Like dirty water, there are some people who look down upon you in your life. Always remember that there’s nothing wrong with you. So don’t let those bad words influence you. Stefanie Perner has been skateboarding since she was a child, and for her, it’s much more than just a hobby. It’s her way of exploring a city and forming a connection wherever she goes.
When she arrived in Beijing from Germany at the age of 20, she found skateboarding to be her compass (指南针) in exploring this city. Her first impression of Beijing was its blend (融合) of ancient buildings and modern architecture (建筑), which provided an inclusive mix of skate spots. Each spot offered its own set of challenges and opportunities for creative expression.
The skateboarding community in Beijing had also taken her by surprise. She remembered the first time going out on a street skating session with her Canadian friend. She was worried at first, fearing that people might be a bit reserved around her—a foreigner. Yet, her worries turned out to be unnecessary. The skaters here were as welcoming and open-minded as any skaters she had met in Europe. In her opinion, it was this shared love for skateboarding that tightly put this community together all over the world.
Besides, even those outside the skateboarding community showed curiosity and love for the sport. Passers-by often stopped to watch them skate, with some even daring to try it out. This openness and eagerness for exploration left a deep impression on her, and it provided a wonderful opportunity for cultural exchanges and learning from each other.
Her skateboarding journey in China has truly been inspiring, one that bridges the gap (间隙) between Eastern and Western cultures.

Fifteen-year-old Sansa has been working on a book in the past four years. Feeling stuck and unable to write, the girl started searching for writing groups in Los Angeles to get some guidance. She was excited to find WriteGirl.
Keren Taylor started WriteGirl in 2001 as a way to help teen girls who did not have any chance to attend creative writing programs. “Teen girls are especially vulnerable (脆弱的) and sensitive.” Keren said, “They really need to be lifted and inspired.”
At WriteGirl, 400 women writers volunteer to mentor (指导) 700 teenagers a year. Every girl who has gone through the mentorship program has gone to college and several have chosen to be professional writers. As a means for teens to get their ideas out, it enables girls to explore anything meaningful to them. “Not the flowery language, or rather, complicated (复杂的) expressions that sound skillful, but more of the natural, this is what I’m thinking and what I’m feeling.” Keren said.

13-year-old Sarah sits in her yard, laying out her handmade crafts (手工制品) on the table. There are baskets, flower pots, and cloth bags—all made from recycled materials. They are not just creative objects; they’re part of Sarah’s project to make a greener community.

Mrs. Moss has serious hearing loss. Her world has always been silent. Living alone in a town in England, she has often been lonely.
Then one day in 2021, while Moss was reading the local newspaper, a photo of a lovely cat caught her eye. A family was looking for a home for their new-born kitten. Moss immediately fell in love with the cat and contacted the family. She soon brought the cat home and named it Zebby.
Moss had heard about studies showing that pets can help people deal with loneliness. However, she had no idea that Zebby would become her helper and her ears. From their very first night together, Zebby has slept next to her. When he hears noises in the dark, he jumps up.“He has become my night watch cat,” Moss said. “Sometimes he runs around the room until I wake up.”
After a few weeks, Moss noticed that whenever her phone rang or someone knocked at the door, Zebby would tap (轻轻地敲) her. Later, Zebby started collecting Moss’s mails. Now,whenever he hears the mailbox being opened, he runs towards it, carries the mail in his mouth and drops it at Moss’s feet.
In July 2023, Zebby was named Britain’s National Cat of the Year by a cat charity in the U. K. Moss was surprised at the news, Zebby beat out about 3,000 other cats because of the many ways he helps Moss.
This morning, I found the first red apple shining among the leaves. Dad gently handed it to me after picking it. “Hard work makes it sweet,” he smiled. The apple tasted like someone had poured patience, love, and a warm hug into it.

On the evening of March 21, 2025, a 10-year-old boy from Chiling Village, Lingshui, Hainan, went fishing alone in a small boat. He didn’t know that this trip would turn into a dangerous adventure.
After hours in the warm sun, he fell asleep on his small boat. When he woke up, the sky was dark. Suddenly, the wind changed direction, and strong ocean currents (洋流) pushed his boat far from the coast. The boy tried to row back, but the waves were too powerful. His boat drifted (漂流) farther and farther into the open sea. Remembering survival (生存) tips, he followed ocean currents and used stars as guides.
For nearly 16 hours, the boy floated (漂浮) on the sea. He faced terrible challenges, his skin turned red from the sun, and his clothes were covered in salt from the seawater. What’s worse, he has no food or water. He was tired but calm.

Nothing would prevent you from doing most things, including skiing, swimming or even becoming scientists who work on cures (治疗) for RP.” With his eyes shining, Leo nodded and said...

Through the program, girls dive into poetry, fiction, songwriting, plays and so on, learning techniques from professional women writers. This leads to well-rounded training and sets WriteGirl apart from other organizations.
A typical exercise at WriteGirl is mic and rant, a 30-second session before writing for each girl. As a means for teens to get their ideas out, it enables girls to explore anything meaningful to them. “Not the flowery language, or rather, complicated (复杂的) expressions that sound skillful, but more of the natural, this is what I’m thinking and what I’m feeling.” Keren said.
Sansa’s mentor Danyella Wilder is attracted by the long-term nature of mentoring at WriteGirl. “If only I could join in such a program when I was 15! An organization where people are spending their time just tells you, ‘Hey, good job!’ or ‘That was amazing!’ You’re at the age where you need to hear that.”

From school desks to notebooks that stop the natural writing, Beth has faced many challenges from a young age. “My mother used to tie my left hand and make me eat with my right until a doctor warned that this could seriously influence my growth and confidence,” Beth says.
