Celebrate Your Achievements
A study has found that achievements make the brain think clearly and work well. Celebrating even your small achievements can help you to feel more confident.
What does an achievement mean?
Whether it’s working hard at your favorite subject or baking a cake for your friends, putting effort into something that makes you happy is an achievement. 1 It can be something that no one else sees but you feel, such as making it through a difficult day or speaking up in class. Anything that involves (涉及) hard work, courage or skill can be seen as an achievement.
What achievements should be celebrated?
Both huge and small things should be celebrated. Winning a sports event is a big deal, but getting up early to practice matters, too. 2 This situation happens quite often. For example, when you help others with their study, you have improved as well.
3
Studies show that when you celebrate achievements, your brain becomes active and you feel better about yourself. This makes you encouraged and keep positive. 79
How can you reward (奖励) yourself?
Try making an achievement jar (罐子) where you put a coin every time you succeed in something. When the jar is full, reward yourself. 4 These things are interesting and relaxing. Share your wins with family and friends, too, so they can support you.
A.Why does celebrating matter?
B.Who do you share your achievements with?
C.You’re able to overcome difficulties in the future.
D.You can take a bike ride or play games with friends.
E.It’s a good feeling you can get from all areas of your life.

Active Listening
When we talk, we typically expect others to listen with attention. But when someone else is speaking, are we showing them the same politeness?
Listening well doesn’t come naturally to most people. 1 . This also means we often don’t really focus (集中) on what people are saying. One way to listen with more care and attention is to practice active listening.
2 . Active listening is not only hearing someone’s words but also taking notes of their nonverbal (非口头的) communication. Nonverbal communication can include body language, the tone (语气) and their talking speed. By practicing active listening, we can hold onto important information better and show care to others. This useful skill makes others want to discuss things with us.
To get better at active listening, give the speaker your complete attention. 3 , it is easier said than done. Stopping thinking about your phone and clearing your mind of your own thoughts are the first steps. 4 , it’s easier to give your complete attention to the speaker.
Another way to practice active listening is to notice body language. Research shows that 55% of face-to-face communication is nonverbal, 38% vocal (噪音的) and 7% words. 5 . With that in mind, you can give proper replies like nodding, smiling or looking at them politely.
Now do you know how to listen actively?
A.By forgetting those things that could influence you
B.Although this may seem clear and easy to notice and understand
C.This means we don’t pay attention to what someone is expressing
D.When someone is speaking, their body language is giving information, too
E.Because most of us live in a busy world, we care about certain things and miss the rest
F.Active listening is focusing on what someone is communicating and giving your understanding

When you see someone and they don’t recognize you at first, they may excuse themselves by saying they’re “bad with faces”. 1 You might think they’re just making excuses, but being bad with faces is actually a medical problem called face blindness. A new study shows that we should know more about it.
2 It makes it very hard to recognize people, even if you can see well, think clearly and remember things normally. Their study found that some people with face blindness can’t even recognize their own family or close friends if they meet them in surprising places.
3 These adults were asked to share their experiences of living with the condition. Of these people, 35% said they often fail to recognize their closest family members if they meet them in unexpected places. 4 The researchers said that most people don’t know much about face blindness, which may make it harder for people to understand those who have the condition.
According to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), face blindness can also affect the ability to recognize emotions on other people’s faces and guess their ages. 95
The NHS adds that the difficulty of recognizing faces may make it harder to make friends, or cause problems at work or school, and this could affect the mental (精神的) health of people with the condition.
A.One of the most interesting things was the talking screens.
B.In other words, they have a hard time remembering people’s faces.
C.29 adults with face blindness in the UK took part in an online survey.
D.It may also affect the ability to follow the plots (情节) of TV shows or movies.
E.Researchers from the UK and the US described face blindness as a life-long condition.
F.And 55% said they couldn’t always recognize their closest friends when seeing them in new places.

Understanding Yourself with the MBTI Test
Have you ever wondered why you act the way you do, or why your classmates seem so different from you? 1 This test is based on the theory that we all have different preferences when it comes to how we perceive (察觉) the world and make decisions. 97
The MBTI sorts people into 16 different types, based on four key aspects of how you prefer to experience the world.
Do you prefer to focus on the outer world or on your own inner world? This is called Extraversion (E) or Introversion (I). Do you prefer to focus on the basic information you take in or do you prefer to interpret and add meaning? That’s Sensing (S) or Intuition (N). 2 It’s Thinking (T) or Feeling (F). When you plan or do things, do you prefer to be organized or more flexible? That’s Judging (J) or Perceiving (P).
Once you know your type, you can better understand your strengths and weaknesses. 3 But if you’re an “INFP”, you might be more of a dreamer who values harmony (和谐) and takes your time with decisions.
The MBTI isn’t just for fun. It can help you choose a career that suits you or even help you get along better with your friends and family. 100
So, why not give it a try? There are many free versions of the MBTI test online. Just remember, it’s only a guide and it’s okay if you don’t fit perfectly into one type. We are all unique and complex!
A.For example, if you’re an “ENTJ,” you might be a natural-born leader who loves to take charge and make quick decisions.
B.The MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) test can help you find out!
C.That is hiding your true personality in specific situations.
D.It’s like a fun game that tells you about your personality type.
E.It’s a tool for self-discovery that can make your life more fulfilling.
F.When making decisions, do you prefer to first look at logic or first look at the people and special circumstances (情况)?

How to Be a Successful Language Learner?
“Learning a language is easy. Even a child can do it!”
Most adults who are learning a second language would disagree with this statement (陈述). 1 They need hundreds of hours of study and practice.
Language learning is different from other kinds of learning. 2 Language learning research shows that successful language learners are similar in many ways.
First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher. 3 They try to find the patterns and the rules for themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues (线索): When they guess wrong, they guess again. They try to learn from their mistakes.
Successful language learning is active learning. Successful learners find people who speak the language and they ask these people to correct them when they make a mistake. 4 They are not afraid to repeat what they hear or to say strange things, they are willing to (愿意) make mistakes and try again. It is more important for them to learn to think in the language than to know the meaning of every word.
5 They want to learn the language because they are interested in the language and the people who speak it. It is necessary for them to learn the language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them. They find it easy to practice using the language regularly (有规律地). That’s because they want to learn it.
A.But what does a successful language learner do?
B.They would feel sad learning the language.
C.They discover their own way to learn the language.
D.Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose (目的).
E.Learning a language is very difficult for them.
F.They will try anything to communicate.

We can see circles, squares and triangles (三角形) everywhere in our daily life. Have you thought about their meanings in films? 116
Circles represent things that are soft and natural. The round shape reminds us of things that appear in nature, like the sun, flowers, raindrops and so on. 1 All these things make us feel happy and warm. This is why so many cartoon characters’ bodies—heroes, kids, good people—are round in shape, because circles represent goodness, happiness and friendliness.
2 In Up, Carl, an elderly man, has a square face and wears square glasses, while Russell, an 8-year-old boy with a round face, always wears round medals. These shapes show the characters’ personalities. Carl is stubborn (固执的) and lonely, while Russell is lovely and full of energy.
The angriest shape is the triangle. Every kid who draws a monster with sharp teeth draws a row of triangles, don’t they? 3 Look at the bad guys in cartoons—they are all drawn with plenty of points and triangles, like Shengongbao in Ne Zha. And triangles are stable and don’t easily fall down. In films, this feature makes bad people difficult to deal with.
Not only in cartoons, but also in other kinds of films, different shapes are used for the same purpose. 120
A.That’s because the shape represents fear, distrust and doubt in some way.
B.Squares show things that are unnatural or man-made, or things that are boring or old-fashioned.
C.In this way, these shapes can help make films better.
D.So, next time you see a film, try to find the hidden shapes and you will know what the characters are like.
E.We can also connect circles with beautiful eyes, babies’ round faces...
F.Much like colors, different shapes can show different features of characters in the scenes.
Why Live Near the River?
Imagine pioneers traveling west in the 1800s. In those days, it was hard to find running water and shops to buy things. As time went by, most pioneers had to make their homes near a river so that they could get water easily.
How did rivers help people live in the past?
Back in the pioneer days, people grew their own food, caught their own fish, and collected their own water. 1 People also used rivers as roads, traveling on boats. Traders shipped goods to people from other areas.
2
When building many factories right next to rivers for the water’s power to make machines work, some people choose to live near a river for work. They use the river to ship large goods, and some of them work at these factories where power factories provide electricity to homes and businesses. 3
Who wouldn’t want to live near a river?
Some people are nervous about living near rivers because rivers can cause floods. Every once in a while, floodwaters rise higher than a house, ruining (泡坏) many things in the house.
4 Such waste causes water to smell bad and pollutes the crops we eat. Water and crops in polluted areas can make people very sick.
How do people decide where to live?
5 Rivers can provide jobs and fun activities in a beautiful place. However, those living by rivers should be willing to accept possible problems as well.
A.Why do people live near rivers now?
B.Why did people want to live near a river?
C.Some factories put their waste into rivers.
D.Staying close to a river made it easy to get water for living.
E.People who carry goods onto ships live near the river, too.
F.People should think over the possible risks before deciding where to live.
Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day falls on the fourth Thursday in April every year all over the United States. This holiday shows kids what it means to be a grown-up (成年人) in the working world. 1 They can help their parents do some cleaning, send e-mails and deal with (处理) other everyday things.
I still remember I was very happy when this day started this year. 2 Second, I could sit in my dad’s taxi all day long and we would go to a restaurant for lunch.
But after only forty minutes of driving around the city, I was very bored. I couldn’t read my book in the car as I would get carsick (晕车的). 3 . People wouldn’t get into my dad’s taxi because they thought he already had a passenger—me. So nothing happened. It seemed years before we finally went out for lunch. 4 .
Although the purpose of the day is to give kids a chance to experience possible jobs in the future, I got something completely different from this. 5 Where else can you play with your friends, read great books and write stories all in one day?
Just like you’ll have to learn to love your job later in life, learn to love school from now on.
根据短文内容,选出能填入文中空白处的最佳选项。其中有一项为多余选项。
A.In fact, I started to miss the school.
B.First, I didn’t need to go to school.
C.I decided to do part-time jobs to make money.

Driverless cars have long appeared in science fiction movies and books, but with the development of technology, things have changed a lot. 131
The development of the driverless car actually started in the 1920s. But it wasn’t until the 1980s that the first ones were successfully created, one of which was made by Mercedes-Benz. Since then, the technology has gone from strength to strength. These days, Uber is the latest to show its plan of driverless cars. 1 Google and Tesla already have driverless cars on the road.
But do we really need them? 2 Some would argue “yes” to both. If perfected, it could lead to much safer road conditions for all. It would be of great help to the sick and the disabled. They would also allow roads to increase their capacity (容量) between 200—400%. 3 Google’s self-driving car has had 14 small accidents. Even worse, Tesla’s caused an accident seriously in 2015.
4 And what’s the future? Maybe you can imagine a world of flying cars taking us to work. They’re going to allow people to take long rides at 75 to 150 miles every hour where you’d get stuck in heavy traffic now. It’s really, in a not-too-far future, going to be something that is practical. Wouldn’t that be fine?
A.And are they really safe?
B.Driverless cars are still not perfect right now.
C.They have moved from a dream to a reality recently.
D.It follows Apple and Ford that have shown similar plans.
E.That means they can make the roads safer.
F.Perfection, though, seems to be just out of reach.
Asking for directions is the first thing we do when we arrive in a new place, or even when we are just trying to find a strange place. 1 Here are some tips for you.
Use greetings and polite expressions. Starting the conversation with a greeting is necessary. If you want to get a nice answer, you’d better begin by saying “Hello” first. And some words like “may” “can” and “could” will help you express yourself better.
Build your vocabulary (词汇). You should know the basic words that can be used when asking for directions. Learn the most commonly used prepositions (介词) like “between” and adverbs (副词) like “near”. 2 It’s also useful for you to remember places like High Park, and words like “bank”, “block”... Then try to use the right direction words.
3 Sometimes, it can happen that you are still far from the place you look for and you have to use the public transport. Which kind of public transportation should you choose? You might ask like this, “Is it far? Do I need to take the bus or the subway there?” You also need to remember different kinds of transportation like the underground or the taxi when explaining your need.
Try to know some important landmarks. Don’t be afraid of using symbols. Every city in the world has its own symbols. You can decrease (减少) search time if you know what the most important symbols are in the city. For example, in London, England, you may find that there are many symbols here. 4 Find it and mark it!
Don’t be too shy to ask. Learn to relax if you get lost somewhere. Every person may do that now and then, especially when visiting a new city. 140
A.Get to know the transportation system.
B.But always make sure you can ask others for help.
C.They are very useful when you need to find somewhere fast.
D.Knowing how to ask for them can make our life much easier.
E.And it is also important to know where your house or hotel is on a map.
F.After we know how to get to the final place, we should say “Thanks” to others.

For a long time, many Chinese students have considered physical education as an unimportant part of school life. Teachers of “main subjects” such as Chinese, math or physics often appear during the physical education class. 1 Even if no teacher appears, the students themselves will pay attention to these subjects that are important for competitive examinations later in life. Physical education could wait.
2 The marks for physical education in senior high school entrance exams were raised from 40 to 70. And 14 sports subjects like table tennis, swimming, gymnastics and badminton that students could choose from were added.
However, the goal is not to make sure that students score high. 3 Making such reforms could help change their opinion about physical education.
The 70 marks are made up of 40 marks for the process assessment (评定) and 30 marks as the onsite (现场) score. The process assessment is a test of basic daily sports like 50-meter running, 1-minute rope jumping, 1-minute sit-ups and so on. 4 In this way, your students can be encouraged to exercise more often and develop a habit of exercising.
The onsite score of 30 once seemed very exam-oriented (应试的). Students had limited (有限的) sporting activities to choose from, such as running. (800 m for girls and 1,000 m for boys) or playing football, basketball or volleyball. 5 In a word, through the new plan, students will not only get to score higher but also play their preferred games.
A.But all that can change soon, as the Beijing government office announced a new plan.
B.But now, they can have 14 more choices to choose from.
C.And they will say, “The physical education teacher is unwell.”
D.Instead, it is to make sure that the young form healthy sporting habits.
E.Students are tested for these in the first term of the 4th, 6th and 8th grades.
F.But our children should have a perfect balance between mind and body.
William is a student of mine. His grades were really poor. I often wondered if he’d be able to pass the exam until the last few weeks of the year when we were having a class project. 1 Planting the seeds was exciting for most of the students, but the growing part was much less so. It took long time to see the results, and most kids had little patience for it.
2 Every afternoon, William made sure his seed was taken care of. In years past, few seeds sprouted (发芽). And those that did had never gotten so tall. But William’s seed was different and grew well. So before summer, I asked if he’d mind planting his young plants at school. He agreed with my idea. We picked out the perfect place behind the library. 148
About a month into the summer vacation the next year, I happened to drive by there. I wondered how the sunflowers were growing. To my surprise, behind the library, stood beautiful sunflowers. 3 At that moment, I knew I didn’t have to worry about William. 4 Others would too. And, one day, he would bloom (开花) and shine—just like his sunflowers.
A.They were really as beautiful as the sun.
B.They must have been at least 12 feet tall.
C.But William was totally different from other kids.
D.Because I’d seen that special seed planted inside him.
E.Then we took his young plants there and hoped for the best.
F.In the project, each child planted a sunflower seed in a bottle.

B.Driverless cars are still not perfect right now.
C.They have moved from a dream to a reality recently.

E.That means they can make the roads safer.
