Li Haorong, a 17-year-old student from Beijing, reached the summit of Mount Qomolangma, the world’s highest peak in the Xizang autonomous region on May 25, 2025, becoming the youngest Chinese male to climb the summit from its northern slope. Beyond mountaineering, he is also keen on other sports like basketball, skiing and surfing, thus contributing to his active and open-minded way of thinking.
As a member of the Youmei Youth Mountaineering Team, the world’s first youth team to climb Qomolangma, Li began his mountaineering journey in January 2023. He said the sport has taught him valuable life lessons, the most important of which is “to have a heart of awe”. After returning to base camp, Li kowtowed (叩头) three times to Qomolangma to express his gratitude for a safe climb and for all the lessons it had taught him.
Li Jinghui, the team leader and CEO of Youmei Camp, said the journey took 46 days. After arriving at base camp, the team carried out progressive high-altitude adaptive training, climbing from 5,200 meters to 7,028 meters at Camp1. “This strict training involved walking through real snow and ice environments, practicing crevasse (冰缝) crossing and other high-altitude skills,” he said.
Lobsang Dondrub, an experienced mountaineering guide, told China Daily that spring weather on the mountain remains unstable and risky. He noted that teenagers are generally discouraged from attempting the summit because their developing bodies are less able to deal with the challenges of high-altitude climbing. However, he praised Li Haorong’s performance in particular. “He braved various challenges, such as the crevasses of the Rongbuk Glacier, the steep ice walls of the North Col and the oxygen-deprived (缺氧的) ‘death zone’ above 8,000 meters,” he said.
4. What benefits does sports bring to Li Haorong?
A. Thinking patterns. B. Physical strength.
C. Interpersonal skills. D. Geographical knowledge.

6. Why are teenagers not advised to climb Qomolangma according to Lobsang Dondrub?
A. They are unable to stand long-term training.
B. They are lacking in basic mountaineering skills.
C. They are underdeveloped in physical conditions.
D. They are easy to get lost in snow and ice conditions.
7. Which words best describe Li Haorong according to the passage?

Hundreds of emperor penguin chicks (帝企鹅幼崽) jumped off a 15-meter cliff, as high as a five-story building. This scene was filmed in January at Atka Bay in Antarctica and has been released recently in a documentary series called Secrets of the Penguins. This jump seems brave but could be deadly to these young penguins.
According to National Geographic, emperor penguins usually raise their chicks on sea ice platforms. When these young birds are 5 months old, they lose their baby feathers and grow adult feathers, which are waterproof. Before long, the chicks have to begin their first swim in the sea to hunt by themselves. Normally, they just need to jump from the sea ice, which is less than a meter high.
However, the fast-melting ice in Antarctica changes the situation. The Antarctic summer sea ice has started to decline since 2016, reported the BBC. In February 2023, the total area of sea ice reached a record low of 1.91 million square kilometers.
“Penguins depend on sea ice, a stable platform for them, to bring up their young,” Peter Fretwell from UK’s national polar research institute told the BBC. If the ice platform melts or breaks apart before chicks develop their waterproof feathers, they are more likely to drown or freeze to death. For this reason, emperor penguins are now choosing to raise their babies on the ice shelf, which is firmly attached (附着) to the land. Therefore, chicks must face the challenge of jumping off a high cliff.
According to Live Science, the decrease in the ice has caused thousands of emperor penguin chicks to die in West Antarctica in 2022. The continuing drop of sea ice may force more penguins to make their nests on ice shelves. “It’s heartbreaking to think that the whole species may be gone if climate change continues on the path that it’s on at the moment,” said Fretwell.
8. Which is NOT mentioned about penguin chicks in paragraph 2?
A. Eating habits. B. Living conditions.
C. Changing feathers. D. Jumping behaviour.
9. Why do emperor penguin chicks have to jump off high cliffs now?
A. Their parents force them to jump.
B. They want to challenge themselves.
C. The ice shelves provide more food.
D. The ice platforms are melting rapidly.
10. What does the underlined word “decline” probably mean in the passage?
A. Appear. B. Decrease. C. Move. D. Increase.
11. What is the best title for the passage?
A. A Brave Jump: The First Step to the Ocean.
B. Ice Shelves: The Home of Emperor Penguins.
C. Climate Change: A Threat to Emperor Penguins’ Survival.
D. Secrets of the Penguins: A Documentary about Antarctic.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. B 11. C

根据第二段“According to National Geographic, emperor penguins usually raise their chicks on sea ice platforms. When these young birds are 5 months old, they lose their baby feathers and grow adult feathers, which are waterproof. Before long, the chicks have to begin their first swim in the sea to hunt by themselves. Normally, they just need to jump from the sea ice, which is less than a meter high. (据《国家地理》报道,帝企鹅通常在海冰平台上饲养幼崽。当这些幼鸟5个月大时,它们会失去幼鸟羽毛,长出防水的成年羽毛。不久,雏鸟就必须开始第一次在海里游泳,自己狩猎。通常,它们只需要从不到一米高的海冰上跳下来)”可知,文中提及了生存环境、换羽和跳跃行为,未提及饮食习惯。故选A项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“However, the fast-melting ice in Antarctica changes the situation.(然而,南极海冰的快速融化改变了这一情况。)”及第四段“For this reason, emperor penguins are now choosing to raise their babies on the ice shelf, which is firmly attached (附着) to the land. Therefore, chicks must face the challenge of jumping off a high cliff. (因此,帝企鹅现在选择在牢牢附着在陆地上的冰架上养育幼崽。因此,幼崽必须面对跳崖的挑战)”可知,海冰平台快速融化是幼崽被迫跳高崖的原因。故选D项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“However, the fast-melting ice in Antarctica changes the situation. The Antarctic summer sea ice has started to decline since 2016, reported the BBC. In February 2023, the total area of sea ice reached a record low of 1.91 million square kilometers.(然而,南极洲快速融化的冰改变了这种情况。据英国广播公司报道,自2016年以来,南极夏季海冰开始decline。2023年2月,海冰总面积达到191万平方公里的历史新低)”可知,夏季,南极海冰减少,划线词decline表示“减少”,与Decrease意义相近。故选B项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“It’s heartbreaking to think that the whole species may be gone if climate change continues on the path that it’s on at the moment, (如果气候变化继续沿着目前的道路发展,那么整个物种都可能消失,这让人痛心)”以及文章内容可知,本文介绍了海冰融化、幼崽生存危机,文章核心是气候变化对帝企鹅生存的威胁,所以“气候变化:帝企鹅生存的威胁”适合作为文章标题。故选C项。
D
When it comes to healthy eating, it’s often difficult to eat whatever you want and keep fit at the same time.
According to a July 2021 report by EIT Food, an EU food organization, nearly 2 billion adults are either fat or overweight, while over 800 million are underweight. It’s clear that diverse solutions are needed to meet different dietary needs, and new technologies are offering some help.
Japanese company Kirin Holdings’ newly-developed electric salt spoon is one good example. According to a statement released on May 20, the spoon is made of plastic and metal. It passes a weak electric current through the tip to the tongue, gathering sodium ion molecules (钠离子分子) and enlarging the salty taste of food. This allows salty food lovers to reduce their sodium intake while still feeling the same level of saltiness, thus achieving a win-win for their diet.
Alongside such inventions is the trend of “personalized nutrition (营养)”, one of the top 10 food technology trends in 2024, which focuses on looking into one’s genetic makeup to solve diet issues.
Examples of companies taking advantage of this trend include DayTwo and Nutrino. DayTwo helps people with diabetes eat more freely by using gut microbiome (肠道微生物群) data to make personalized meal suggestions. Meanwhile, Nutrino offers a wearable device that scans meals and uses AI to provide real-time information on nutritional content.
However, some researchers and medical professionals have doubts about this trend. Doctor David Katz at Eating Well, a leading food and nutrition media brand, states that “90 percent of health is a healthy diet that applies to everyone”.
Yet, as more people grow tired of “one-size-fits-all” dietary advice, we can expect increasing demand and progress in the field of nutrition-related technology in the future.
12. What is the function of Kirin Holdings’ electric salt spoon?
A. To scan the nutritional content of food.
B. To change the genetic makeup of users.
C. To increase the amount of sodium in food.
D. To make food taste saltier with less sodium.
13. How does DayTwo help people with diabetes?
A. By promoting a “one-size-fits-all” dietary plan.
B. By sending weak electric current through the tongue.
C. By providing a wearable device for real-time monitoring.
D. By offering individualized meal tips based on gut microbiome data.
14. What is Doctor David Katz’ attitude towards the “personalized nutrition” trend?
A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Optimistic. D. Indifferent.
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Global dietary health problems.
B. Nutrition technology and its trend.
C. Personalized nutrition services.
D. Advantages of electric salt spoon.
【答案】12. D 13. D 14. A 15. B

【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“DayTwo helps people with diabetes eat more freely by using gut microbiome data to make personalized meal suggestions.(DayTwo利用肠道微生物群数据给出个性化的饮食建议,帮助糖尿病患者更自由地饮食。)”可知,该公司通过肠道微生物群数据为糖尿病患者提供个性化饮食建议。故选D项。

As a student who has improved English writing significantly, I’m frequently asked by classmates how to build a solid writing habit. Based on my own experience, I’ve summarized practical tips that really work.
Read widely and take notes. Good writing comes from a lot of reading. Diverse writing styles help you learn from various authors and form your own taste gradually, whether they’re news reports, essays, or short stories. ____16____ Note down useful phrases, sentence structures, and ideas, and they’ll become your writing resources that you can refer to freely, making your expression more vivid and precise.
Write daily, even for a short time. You don’t need to finish a perfect essay every day. A 10-minute journal entry, a book review, or a response to a news topic works. ____17____ The more you practice putting words on paper, the more natural writing becomes. And you will find it easier to express your ideas clearly and smoothly when facing formal writing tasks.
Don’t fear mistakes — revise boldly (大胆地). Many beginners get stuck because they want their first draft to be perfect. In fact, there is no perfect first draft in anyone’s writing process; even famous writers need to correct their works repeatedly. Don’t be afraid of grammar errors, awkward expressions, or logical gaps. Check for them, and revise them. ____18____
____19____ Sharing your writing with teachers, classmates, or online communities can provide you with fresh ideas. Accept constructive suggestions and comments gracefully — they help you realize some blind spots you might have missed.
Building a writing habit is a long process that requires patience. ____20____ Stick to the tips, and you’ll gradually see your writing skills improve.
A. Seek advice.
B. Make comments.
C. Revision might affect your thinking.
D. Reading these materials enriches your vocabulary.
E. Daily practice helps you develop writing fluency little by little.
F. You might face challenges during this period, but don’t give up.
G. Revision is where ordinary writing turns into better writing.

任务型阅读
My parents decided to drive me to the countryside for relaxation after a busy month. Then, on a Saturday morning, my dad started his car and we set off with great expectation.
Before long, we left the noisy city and came to the mountains. There were few cars on the road and the trees alongside were pretty. We felt so excited! As a few hours passed, we drove onto a narrow road. And minutes later, we found a river not far away from the road. The beach was very wide, and we wanted to have a rest there for a while. So my dad turned our car and drove towards it. Soon, we were driving on the sandy beach. Our car wheels were struggling in the increasingly soft sand. But my dad wanted to get closer to the river.
Before he regretted it, our car had got stuck in the sand. My dad tried to turn around or move back but the car didn’t move. We were trapped! Suddenly, I felt extremely worried inside. What’s worse, it began raining. We got out of the car and tried to push it, but failed. We were tired and our hair and coats were wet. But the car only sank further into the sand.
Anxiously, we walked to the road, hoping to stop a car for help. But after a long time, there wasn’t one passing. Just when we were helpless, we saw a farmhouse not far away. “Can they help us?” I asked. My dad was doubtful. Still, we reached there, and found some people chatting happily. They seemed poor but friendly. My dad told them our problem and begged them to help us pull our car out.

5. What does Li Haorong learn from the climbing according to paragraph 2?
A. To express thanks to the team leader.
B. To show appreciation for what he gained.
C. To value the success of climbing Qomolangma.
D. To respect the experienced mountaineering guide.
A. Active and responsible. B. Helpful and creative.
C. Respectful and adventurous. D. Adaptable and honest.

As a student who has improved English writing significantly I’m frequently asked by classmates how to build a solid writing habit.

Before he regretted it our car had got stuck in the sand.
