The jump to senior high school is a major step. You will face new challenges, but also exciting opportunities. Here is some advice to help you navigate this transition.
Firstly, be open to making new friends. A simple “hello” can start a conversation. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to your classmates. Everyone is in the same situation, feeling a mix of nerves and excitement. Joining a club is another fantastic way to meet people who share your interests.
Secondly, get organized. The workload will increase. Using a planner or a calendar app to track your assignments and deadlines is highly recommended. Managing your time effectively is the key to reducing stress.
Finally, don’t be shy about asking for help. If you’re struggling with a subject, talk to your teacher. They are there to support you. You can also form a study group with your classmates. Helping each other is a great way to learn.
Remember, senior high is not just about grades; it’s about growth and discovery. Embrace the experience!

Yesterday, my 6-year-old son taught me a valuable lesson that stayed with me for hours. It might sound surprising, but he taught me a powerful lesson.
A few weeks ago, I had to travel for work, and I couldn’t spend much time with my son. Even though he is a bit stubborn, he is growing up fast. That’s when the lesson happened. While I was eating dinner, he was in the bath, and suddenly he started crying. I asked him what happened, and he said, “Shampoo (洗发水) got in my eyes.”
I got really worried and rushed into the bathroom. I tried to help by splashing water on his eyes, but things got worse when he rubbed his eyes with his soapy hands. I was nervous, telling him not to use his hands.
Out of the blue, he said, “Calm down! Dad.” It amazed me. I realized I was making things worse. I stopped splashing water, washed his hands, and calmly told him to use his hands to clean his eyes while blinking. It worked, and he felt better.
I’m not sure where he learned to stay calm, maybe from me or somewhere else. But the bigger lesson is that when we face problems, acting emotionally and quickly might not be best. Staying calm and thinking about the right solution is better.
In today’s tough job market with many people losing their jobs, it’s easy to feel worried. My son’s lesson reminded me that staying calm and taking a moment to relax can help us face challenges with a clear mind, more energy, and better solutions.
4. Why did the author’s son start crying during the bath?
A. He fell down in the bath.
B. Shampoo got into his eyes.
C. He didn’t want to take a bath.
D. His dad splashed water on his eyes.
5. What did the author realize after his son said “Calm down! Dad”?
A. His son was too stubborn to listen to him.
B. His son could solve the eye problem by himself.
C. He needed to call a doctor for his son right away.
D. His own way of helping was making the problem worse.
6. What can we infer about the author from the passage?
A. He used to act emotionally when facing problems.
B. He gets angry with his son too often.
C. He spends most of his time with his son.
D. He taught his son to stay calm on purpose.
7. In which situation can we use the lesson the author learned?
A. When we are facing a tough exam.
B. When we are shopping in a mall.
C. When we are playing games with friends.
D. When we are watching a movie.
C
Search and rescue (SAR) dogs have been used for years to help find lost or injured people. They officially made their first appearance in World War II when they were used to locate humans trapped under rubble piles after bombings. These well-trained dog heroes were able to find victims much faster than human search teams, making them incredibly valuable tools when time was important to the survival of trapped individuals. Since then, these amazing dogs have been used in natural disasters because they can search an area quickly and find people efficiently.
The science behind how dogs find lost humans is complex. However, we can understand it by learning how their olfaction works. Dogs are born to smell things. Almost one-third of their brain is used to handle all the smells they detect. They have a highly developed sense of smell that allows them to separate mixed smells and focus on just one smell at a time. They can also tell where a smell is coming from by using each nostril independently, and they can recognize different smells.
Urban disaster rescue dogs work using a method called air scenting. It requires dogs to search a large area for the purpose of locating specific, condensed human smell coming from under the rubble. Therefore, the dogs’ natural hunting ability must be focused on human smell, whether the person is alive or dead. To achieve this, trainers typically use a toy or food to establish a connection between finding humans and the reward.
With consistent, high-quality training and by using the dog’s powerful sense of smell, SAR teams can successfully locate and rescue people trapped under rubble or in other dangerous situations where humans alone cannot help.
8. Why were SAR dogs considered valuable in World War II?
A. They had a lot of experience. B. They could search very efficiently.
C. They could survive in tough conditions. D. They were excellent diggers.
9. What does the word “olfaction” in paragraph 2 most likely mean?
A. The ability to see. B. The ability to hear.
C. The sense of smell. D. The sense of touch.
10. Why do trainers use toys or food during the training of SAR dogs?
A. To make the dogs physically stronger for the rescue work.
B. To help the dogs find human beings more quickly.
C. To let the dogs recognize human smell and link it to a reward.
D. To help the dogs remember the correct way back home.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The ways to train SAR dogs for effective victim search.
B. The history, working principle and value of SAR dogs.
C. The reasons why SAR dogs are needed in natural disasters.
D. The role of dogs’ sense of smell in daily and rescue life.

Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally (心理上) healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine.
The study used information collected from more than 28,000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time after school, including how much time they spent watching TV or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programmes. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale.
Researchers said in the study some of the results were expected. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And girls would score higher on negative indicators of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who did not take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers.” the study said, “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic development, the new study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
12. What were the students asked to do first in the study?
A. They talked about their mental health with researchers.
B. They answered questions about their after-school screen time.
C. They reported how often they joined after-school activities.
D. They drew pictures to show their daily life at school.
13. According to the study, which of the following is true about teenage girls?
A. They were more likely to feel satisfied with their daily life.
B. They showed a very low rate of joining after-school activities.
C. They were less likely to have higher levels of anxiety than boys.
D. They were more seriously affected by too much screen time mentally.
14 What is the purpose of the numbers (46% and 67%) used in paragraph 4?
A. To challenge the accuracy of previous research on screen time.
B. To support the claim that high screen time is widespread among teens.
C. To prove that students with no activities have no screen time
D. To argue that screens are more engaging than after-school activities.
15. What can we learn from the findings of the study?
A. Girls are more mentally unhealthy than boys.
B. Screen time should be completely avoided.
C. After-school activities are important for teenagers’ mental health.
D. Most Canadian teenagers spend too much time on sports.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How to look good in pictures
Everyone wants to look great in pictures, but it can sometimes be a little hard to know what will make you look your best. 16
Posing for professional photos
When you’re taking a professional headshot or a photo where you need to look serious, try to sit or stand so your face is turned toward the brightest light in the room. 17 As a result, your eyes will appear brighter and more expressive.
Take several deep breaths to relax. If you feel nervous in front of the camera, that’s going to show in your photos.
18
Hold the camera slightly above your eye level. Then, look up into the camera, and lift your eyebrows slightly. That will give you a wide-eyed, fresh look that’s picture-perfect.
Look for interesting backgrounds to include in your selfies. Don’t just recreate the same shoot all the time. 19 That way, every selfie will offer something new to the viewer — and it’s a great way to keep track of your favorite experiences, too!
Shooting pictures outdoors
When you’re taking pictures outside, it gives you a unique chance to incorporate the natural world into your shoot. Try taking a picture where you are smelling a beautiful flower, for instance, or climbing up on a nearby large rock. Remember to always keep an eye on your safety.
Try big, bold poses to make the most of the space. 20 Get out and get moving to see what inspires you during your photo shoot!
A. Looking great in selfies.
B. Looking up into cameras.
C. The location of your photo shoot can greatly influence the final result.
D. That way, there won’t be any shadows obscuring your face in the finished photo.
E. Luckily, there are a few quick tricks that can help you feel more confident in any photo.
F. You can run, jump, throw your arms up in the air, and interact with the world around you.
G. Instead, take selfies in different spots, and try to include a little of the background in the frame.
