Field trips are offered on weekdays only, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon or from 12 noon to 2 p.m. The rate is $6 per visitor, both children and adults, with a $120 minimum. We offer one free adult per 10 children for groups of 40 or more. Maximum capacity is 120 people per field trip.
Public tours
Guided tours of the STAR Eco Station introduce visitors to over two hundred rescued foreign animals. Each tour is led by an Eco Station staff member, and features fun animal facts, hands-on animal encounters, surprising rescue stories, environmental exhibits, and original approaches to going green. Visitors may only see the animals on a guided tour, for both your safety and the safety of our animals.
The guided tour lasts approximately 45-60 minutes. Public tours are offered on weekends, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.(the last tour begins at 3 p.m.). Our guided public tours start every hour on the hour. When my son Ryan was six years old and in first grade, his teacher, Nancy, talked to his class about developing countries and how they could help people, particularly children, in other parts of the world. She explained that besides not having toys or enough food, some of them didn’t even have clean water. For these children sitting in their comfortable classroom in Kemptville, Ontario, the idea of children not having any toys, or enough food or water, had a huge impact.
The principal had distributed a list that showed the costs of buying supplies in developing countries. A penny would buy a pencil, a dollar a hot meal, two dollars a blanket. Seventy dollars would buy a well. When Ryan heard people died because they didn’t have clean water, he was deeply affected. He came home that day and insisted he needed seventy dollars for class.
Mark and I discussed it, then explained to Ryan that seventy dollars was a lot of money. If he was really interested in doing something, however, he could earn it. He happily agreed, so we put an old cookie tin on top of the refrigerator and started giving him chores. He did chores for the neighbours and his grandparents, too. After four months, Ryan was nearing his goal.
In April 1998 we went for our meeting with WaterCan, a Canadian nonprofit organization providing clean water to people in developing countries. And Ryan brought his cookie tin full of money. Nicole, the director, and Helen, her assistant, thanked him and told him how important his donation was. Then they told us it would cost a lot more than $70 to build a well—in fact, it would cost $2,000.
Ryan wasn’t concerned and replied simply, “That’s okay. I’ll just do more chores!” News about what Ryan was doing got out, and soon we were getting calls from the media. When the Ottawa Citizen did a story on Ryan’s well, we began to receive donations at least once a week. People from all over were catching Ryan’s dream and were inspired to give.
24. What inspired Ryan to help kids in developing countries?
A. Parents’ support.B. Ryan’s warm heart.
C. The principal’s list.D. Nancy’s explanation.
25. What did Ryan decide to do to help the kids?
A. He planned to donate 70$ to a charity.
B. He intended to pay for a well for the kids.
C. He desired to purchase hots meals for the kids.
D. He wanted to buy blankets and pencils for the kids.
26. What happened after the Ottawa Citizen did a story on Ryan’s well?
A. Donations were received once a month.
B. People were inspired to give a helping hand.
C. Ryan did more chores and donated more money.
D. The media called Ryan and his family frequently.
27. What’s the suitable title for the passage?
A. Ryan’s Well of Life.B. A Joint Effort.
C. A Warm-hearted Kid.D. Kids in Need.

Of all the creatures on the planet, the narwhal(独角鲸) has the strangest appearance. It's a whale which has a long tooth coming out of its head; that's how it got its nickname, the unicorn(独角兽) of the sea. They live in the Arctic Ocean off the coast of Canada, Russia and East Greenland. However, experts say some populations of narwhals could be extinct, and it's all due to noise pollution.
Narwhals rely on echolocation(回声定位), which they use to find food and detect their surroundings. They produce a sound wave that travels through water until it encounters an object. They receive this reflected sound with their lower jaws, and obtain the information on features like size and shape.
However, the increase in human activities in the sea, as well as climate change, has resulted in the Arctic Ocean becoming noisier, which means it's more difficult for narwhals to rely on sound. Susanna Blackwell, who studies the effects of underwater noise on sea animals, told the BBC that there is noisier activity in the Arctic Ocean than ever because, as sea ice melts, new routes are opening. And while icebergs' breaking has been part of the ocean sound for hundreds of years, man-made noise is much harder for animals to adapt to, particularly as these changes are so sudden.
Research in 2023 recorded the reactions of narwhals to the imitated noises made by a guard ship. The scientists marked and tracked the creatures and found that, on hearing these sounds, they ended deep dives and stopped clicking, the echolocation signal they use for finding food underwater. This is the same reaction that narwhals have to orcas(虎鲸), which hunt them, meaning man-made noise could touch the creature's “threat button”.
So, what can we do? Charlotte Findlay, a assistant professor at Heriot-Watt University, says, “Noise is actually quite easy to solve. We need to either turn it off or turn it down.”
28.What can be the main factor in causing the extinction of narwhals?
A.Its hunters. B.Noise pollution.
C.Its strange appearance. D.Climate change.
29.How does a narwhal detect its surroundings?
A.By its long tooth. B.By diving deeper.
C.By echolocation. D.By listening to the a sound.
30.Why is it difficult for narwhals to rely on sound?
A.Sea animals affect narwhals' activities.
B.The Arctic Ocean is noisier than before.
C.Human activities cause climate change.
D.Narwhals can easily adapt to sudden changes.
31.What is the best title for the text?
A.The Survival Threat to the Narwhal
B.Great Power of Echolocation
C.Strange Appearance of the Narwhal
D.Effective Ways to Reduce Noise Pollution

A recent global study, which surveyed 10,000 young people from 10 countries, showed that nearly 60 percent of them were extremely worried about the future state of the planet. The report also showed that nearly half of the respondents (受访者) said that such distress affected them daily, and three-quarters agreed with the statement that “the future is frightening.” This, and many other studies, show clearly that climate change is not just a threat to the environment. It also poses a very real threat to our mental health.
Psychologists have classified these feelings of sadness, distress, and worry about the current climate emergency as eco-anxiety. According to the Climate Psychology Alliance, eco-anxiety is defined as the “intense physical and mental discomfort in response to dangerous changes in the climate system.”
Eco-anxiety doesn’t just affect young people. It also affects researchers who work in climate and ecological science, burdened by the reality discovered in their findings, and it affects the poor people across the globe, who hopelessly bear the harmful impacts of climate breakdown.
In recent years, we’ve seen wildfires tear through Canada and Greece, and summer floods destroy regions in Pakistan that are home to nearly 33 million people. Studies have shown that those impacted by air pollution and rising temperatures are more likely to experience mental distress.
The cause of this mental distress is absolutely external. According to Caroline Hickman, a researcher on eco-anxiety from the University of Bath, anyone experiencing these emotions is displaying entirely natural and rational reactions to the climate crisis. Her suggestion? Take eco-anxiety as a tool for good—as an emotion that can urge people to act in protection of our planet.
This is why in 2024, we will also see more people around the world join the fight for climate justice and apply for jobs that seek sustainable development. Eco-anxiety is not something we will defeat with therapy—we will solve it by taking action.
32. What does the underlined word “distress” in paragraph1 mean?
A. Shock.B. Anxiety.C. Fear.D. Anger.
33. What is eco-anxiety according to the Climate Psychology Alliance?
A. It is a strong reaction to the natural disasters.
B. It is a kind of mental disease for the young people.
C. It is a physical and mental discomfort when we meet difficulties.
D. It is a strong physical and mental discomfort for the dangerous climate changes.
34. What is mainly talked about in paragraph3?
A. The process of eco-anxiety.B. The impact of eco-anxiety.
C. The causes of eco-anxiety.D. The benefits of eco-anxiety.
35. What’s the approach to solving eco-anxiety according to Caroline Hickman?
A. Defeat it with a therapy.
B. Just wait for a good solution.
C. Join the fight for climate justice.
D. Use it to urge people to protect our earth.
【答案】32. B 33. D 34. B 35. D
【解析】本文是一篇说明文。气候变化不仅威胁我们所居住的环境,它还对我们的情绪健康构成了非常现实的威胁。本文主要介绍了“生态焦虑”,并分析了它的影响以及应对策略。
32.词义猜测题。根据第一段中的“A recent global study, which surveyed 10,000 young people from 10 countries, showed that nearly 60 percent of them were extremely worried about the future state of the planet. (最近的一项全球研究对来自10个国家的10000名年轻人进行了调查,结果显示,近60%的年轻人对地球的未来状况极为担忧。)”可知,调查结果显示,有近60%的年轻人对地球的未来状况极为担忧。划线词所在的名词短语such distress 指的就是“这样的担忧”,故distress 与上文的worried词义接近,意为“担忧;焦虑”。故选B。
33.细节理解题。根据第二段中的“According to the Climate Psychology Alliance, eco-anxiety is defined as the “intense physical and mental discomfort in response to dangerous changes in the climate system.”(根据气候心理学联盟(Climate Psychology Alliance)的说法,生态焦虑被定义为“对气候系统危险变化的强烈身体和精神不适”。)”可知,生态焦虑指的是人们对于危险的气候变化产生的一种强烈的身体和精神不适。故选D。
34.主旨大意题。根据第三段内容“Eco-anxiety doesn’t just affect young people. It also affects researchers who work in climate and ecological science, burdened by the reality discovered in their findings, and it affects the poor people across the globe, who hopelessly bear the harmful impacts of climate breakdown. (生态焦虑不仅影响年轻人。它还影响了从事气候和生态科学工作的研究人员,他们背负着调查结果中发现的现实,并影响了全球各地的穷人,他们无可救药地承受着气候崩溃的有害影响。)”可知,第3段主要讨论了生态焦虑的影响。故选B。
35.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段内容“According to Caroline Hickman, a researcher on eco-anxiety from the University of Bath, anyone experiencing these emotions is displaying entirely natural and rational reactions to the climate crisis. Her suggestion? Take eco-anxiety as a tool for good—as an emotion that can urge people to act in protection of our planet.

1.保护动物的意义;
2.人类伤害动物的行为;
3.保护动物的措施。
注意:写作词数应为80个左右。
Protect animals
Protect animals
Animals play a vital role in maintaining an ecological balance. They contribute to healthy ecosystems, which humans rely on for clean air, water, and food. Protecting them ensures our own survival and preserves biodiversity.
However, humans harm animals in many ways. Some hunt them for fur or ivory, while others destroy their habitats through deforestation and pollution. These actions can drive many species to the edge of extinction.
To protect animals, governments should enforce strict laws against hunting and habitat destruction. Individuals can help by refusing to buy products made of wild animals and raising awareness of protecting animals. Together, we can create a safer world for all creatures.
第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Alice sat in the car while palm trees seemed to speed by the car window. Eight-year-old Alice began to get nervous, the way she always did in new surroundings. She felt a thin shine of sweat above her lip in spite of the car's cool air. “The aquarium(水族馆) won't be crowded, I bet, and people are going to notice me. I hate wearing this prosthetic leg(假肢),” she thought to herself. “Not being normal is the worst.” She felt tears coming from her eyes.
Entering the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, around a corner of a tank, she noticed an animal that looked unusual. “Is that a dolphin with a prosthetic tail instead of a real tail?” she asked an aquarium staff member. He nodded and replied, “Yes, that's Betty. She's a very special dolphin.” “What happened to her?” “This dolphin was found off the coast of Florida, caught in a crab trap. The ropes from the trap cut off the blood circulation to her tail. So she lost her tail.” Alice caught her breath. “She's just like me.” “But she struggled to survive. Now she wears a prosthetic tail to help her swim as a dolphin's supposed to swim,” the staff member continued. “Every day, Betty shows us anything is possible if we believe in ourselves.”
Alice felt her heart was touched. She waved at Betty. Looking at Alice, Betty raised her flippers(鳍), came to her and lifted her head. “She's swimming right into my arms,” Alice said tearfully. They made eye contact. She seemed to be speaking to Alice, “We're the same.”
Back home, all Alice talked about was Betty. For two weeks, she cried and begged her mother to take her back to Clearwater.
Unfortunately, another blow hit Alice. She fell on the hardwood floor at home and broke her other leg. Alice suffered the pain in her leg. After a thorough examination, the doctor explained bad news to them that she would need some surgery on her leg. Years of a living hell(地狱) came back to her.
She started fearing surgery again and refused to go to hospital for treatment.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
“How can I persuade Alice to undergo the surgery?”Alice's mom said to herself.
Encouraged by Betty,Alice changed her mind and did what her mother and doctor had told her to.
“How can I persuade Alice to undergo the surgery?”Alice's mom said to herself. Then she had an idea and she decided to take Alice back to Clearwater. On arriving at Clearwater, Alice couldn't wait to see Betty, the lovely dolphin that comforted her and boosted her mood. As Alice's mother wheeled Alice towards Betty, she raised her flippers, came to them and lifted her head. Looking at the girl, Betty seemed to say, “Be brave and believe in yourself.” Alice absolutely knew what the caring eyes were conveying, so she decided to keep a more optimistic state of mind.
Encouraged by Betty, Alice changed her mind and did what her mother and doctor had told her to. Finally came the day when Alice was in the hospital again. Though feeling nervous and afraid of the pain the surgery might bring, Alice faced it bravely. The operation was a success. Her mother took her to Clearwater on the day when she was discharged from hospital. Inspired by Betty's swimming like a normal dolphin, Alice practiced walking hard. Her confidence had been improved as she gradually recovered. She had no idea what her future would be like but she would do anything to have a better look at this wonderful world.

The STAR Eco Station is an environmental science museum, a wildlife rescue center, and a shelter for endangered and illegally-traded foreign animals confiscated(没收) by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It carries out the mission “Preservation through Education” by educating visitors on the preservation of the environment and the interdependence of all living things.
Field trips
The STAR Eco Station hosts field trips for schools and camps throughout Southern California. Each field trip lasts two hours, consisting of a one-hour gathering and a one-hour tour of the facility, with lessons associated with California State Science Standards.
Throughout the field trip, students learn about the latest developments in environmental protection and the ways in which wildlife interacts with various ecosystems.

第二节(满分25分)

A.Sea animals affect narwhals' activities.
B.The Arctic Ocean is noisier than before.
C.Human activities cause climate change.
D.Narwhals can easily adapt to sudden changes.
31.What is the best title for the text?
A.The Survival Threat to the Narwhal
