Every country is different, and every country’s laws are different. Here are some interesting laws of some countries.
It’s illegal (非法的) to wear a mask in public in Denmark
Not only masks, the Danish government wants to stop anyone from covering their faces in any way in public places. This includes masks, helmets, scarves, hats, fake beards and so on.
The law went into effect in August 2018. Officials say the law helps to properly identify people during crowded events, if anything negative happens and someone needs to be identified.
It’s illegal to feed pigeons in Venice, Italy
In 2008, Venice lawmakers made it illegal to feed pigeons in Saint Mark’s Square and Venice. This was because many tourists were giving them food in exchange for taking pictures for social media.
It is said the clean-up from the birds cost each citizen €275 per year, so now, the tables are turned. If you’re caught feeding the pigeons, you could face fines of up to €700. Better to get the picture-perfect shot of Venice’s beautiful bridges instead.
It’s illegal to ride a cow while drunk in Scotland
Before you get any crazy ideas—and have too much wine—you should know you could get a ticket (罚款单) for drunk cow riding. Technically, the full 1872 law mandates (授权) people not to be drunk when in charge of a cow, horse, carriage or steam engine.
If you are wondering, the same law states people there cannot have a loaded (上膛的) gun on them while drunk, though people are usually allowed to take a gun with them in Scotland. (We have to admit, that’s a pretty good rule.)
41. Why did Venice lawmakers make it illegal to feed pigeons in Saint Mark’s Square and Venice?
A. Because it was dangerous for pigeons to be fed them there.
B. Because you’ re going to be fined for feeding pigeons there.
C. Because the environment there is not suitable for pigeons.
D. Because the pigeons that get together there usually bring trash to the place.
42. What can we infer about Venice, Italy?
A. People in Venice hate pigeons.
B. There may be fewer and fewer pigeons in Venice.
C. People in Venice don’t like taking photos of pigeons.
D. If you take pictures with pigeons, you will be fined.
43. The underlined phrase “went into effect” in Paragraph 1 probably means _________.
A. was made public B. started to be used C. was completely forgotten D. was strongly opposed
44. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. In Denmark, hats are not allowed to be worn in public at all.
B. The fine for feeding pigeons in Venice can be as high as €700.
C. The Scottish law about drunk management only applies to cows and horses.
D. People in Scotland are not allowed to take loaded guns with them at any time.
45. Where may you read this passage?
A. In a newspaper. B. In a novel. C. In a diary. D. In a science textbook.
B
Many of us have seen rainbows in the sky once the sun starts shining again after a rain. For us to see a rainbow, the conditions need to be just right. We need some water drops in the air, like rain or even fog, and we need the Sun to be behind us and quite low to the ground. This is because a rainbow is created by light passing through water drops.
The light that comes from the sun seems white to us. But the white light we see is made up of a mix of different colors. When the light goes through a raindrop, these colors can separate out.
Each of the colors in the rainbow has a different “wavelength” (波长). Raindrops look like little balls. When light hits one of these little balls of water, the light can change direction. We call this “refraction” (折射). Each of the different wavelengths is refracted differently. If the light hits the raindrop at the right angle, the refraction separates the wavelengths out into their different colors.
We are taught there are seven colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. But this isn’t exactly true. Blue and green are next to each other in the rainbow, which is why we can see turquoise (a mix of blue and green). Brown is a mix of red and green. But they aren’t next to each other in the rainbow, so we don’t see them mix to make brown.
We would never see black and white in a rainbow. Black is what we see when there’s no light at all. On the other hand, white is a mix of all the colors together. When light is refracted by raindrops, it separates the white light out, meaning it is no longer white.
46. How does the passage begin?
A By introducing a common natural phenomenon (现象).
B. By asking a question to get readers’ attention.
C. By stating a scientific fact.
D. By telling a story.
47. We can see a rainbow under the right conditions because _________.
A. the raindrops are like little balls B. the light goes through raindrops
C. the sunshine seems to be colorful D. the weather is foggy after it rains
48. According to the passage, what can we know about the colors in the rainbow?
A. They can become brown or black. B. There are only seven colors in all.
C. They mix to make the white light. D. Their own places can be changed.
49. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. How are the colors received in the rainbow?
B. When can the colors turn blue in the rainbow?
C. Which colors aren’t covered with light in the rainbow?
D. Why can’t we find white, black and brown in the rainbow?
50. Which of the following is the best division of the passage?
A. ①②/③/④⑤ B. ①/②③/④⑤ C. ①/②③④/⑤ D. ①②③/④/⑤

Volunteering is a great way to help others, whether it’s a friend who is struggling (斗争) with their homework or an elderly person who feels lonely. Helping others can actually help you, too.
If somebody volunteers, they do something for the good of another person or the world around us, without being paid. Volunteering comes in all shapes and sizes. It can be organized, such as work for a charity, or informal (非正式的), like helping your neighbors with their food shopping.
Volunteering increases your happiness. It can give you a sense of purpose, which can in turn develop your self-confidence and make you active. Volunteers always say, “Volunteering is our way to get started in making a difference, instead of waiting for someone else to do the work.”
By giving help to others, you feel what’s been called “the helper’s high”—an excellent feeling. Volunteering can make you happier over time, too. It has been shown to reduce feelings of worries, because many people find that they are moving away from their personal worries by paying attention to the needs of others. “Volunteering also gives a chance to meet and connect with people, which is good news for our spirit health,” says Jolie Goodman of the Mental Health Foundation.

A. By introducing a common natural phenomenon (现象).
A. ①②/③/④⑤ B. ①/②③/④⑤ C. ①/②③④/⑤ D. ①②③/④/⑤
【答案】46. A 47. B 48. C 49. D 50. B

推理判断题。根据最后一段中“On the other hand, white is a mix of all the colors together. When light is refracted by raindrops, it separates the white light out, meaning it is no longer white.”

Studies have shown that volunteering can improve your physical health, too.
