【中考真题】
Mary Armstrong was a pretty little girl, but she did not pay attention to her things. She usually left her books and playthings everywhere, and it gave her mom much trouble in picking them up and putting them in the proper places. Some of her books and toys became spoiled(损坏). Her mom had often told Mary the bad result of being so careless. The growing habit of carelessness would make her unhappy, and sometimes annoy her friends. Even worse, it would be of great harm to her all her life. But Mary didn’t listen to her mom. So they argued a lot.
One day, Mary made a beautiful toy, a gift for her best friend’s birthday. When her mom asked her to go out into their yard to play, Mary put the toy in her room casually(不经意地). She ran around and played happily there. An hour later, it was time to go to her friend’s birthday party. Mary went back to get the toy. But she couldn’t find it anywhere. Finally, she found the toy broken in the corner. At once she realized that Dash, her pet dog had done this, and she was very angry. Carrying the broken toy to her mom, she couldn’t help crying.
Mrs. Armstrong asked Mary if she had left the toy in the place where Dash could easily get it, and Mary answered, “Yes, mom.”
“Then you should not be irritated, Mary, because the dog does not know it is wrong to play with your toy. I hope this will be a lesson to you hereafter, to put your things away when you finish.”

Many people dream of going on a challenging travel. Most of them keep dreaming; others make it happen. Gregg Bleakney dreamed of going bike riding from North America to South America after finishing a pleasant bike ride. So did Gregg's friend, Brooks Allen.
To pay for the trip, the two friends worked for years. When they were on the road, they often camped outdoors or stayed in cheap hotels. In many places, local people opened their homes to the two friends and gave them food.
During their trip, Gregg and Brooks rode through deserts, rainforests and mountains. They visited modern cities and ancient buildings. On the way they met other bicyclists from all over the world. Brooks had to return to the USA near the bottom of South America and Gregg continued without him. In May 2007, Gregg finally reached his goal. He traveled twelve countries and finished the 30,500-kilometer trip.
Gregg and Brooks kept a record of their trips in a blog. The trips taught both men a lot about traveling. Here is some of Gregg s advice:
Travel light. The less baggage(行李)you have, the less you'll worry about.
Be flexible. Don't plan everything. Always be ready for something unexpected. Then you'll be more relaxed and happy, even when there are challenges along the way.
Be polite. As one traveler told Gregg, "Always remember that nobody wants to fight or cheat a nice person."
Anything worth doing requires time, energy and action. There is no exception. If you hold on to your dream, you can make it like Gregg and Brooks and have fun while you're at it.

One day, she told us that our class would put on a play she had written, “I need someone to play the lead role. Does anyone want to try?” she asked. A few hands were raised—mine wasn’t one of them. Mrs. Smith walked up to me and said. “I think you’re perfect for it, but you didn’t raise your hand.”

When I was a little girl, my parents were busy working, so I was always staying with my grandmother. She was a fan of Qinqiang Opera and would often hum the opera while cooking dinner. The sound of her voice, rich and filled with feelings, attracted me a lot. I would follow her, standing on a small chair in the kitchen. My voice filled the rooms, even though I seldom understood the lyrics.
One day, my grandmother noticed my interest and decided to teach me the basic singing skills. She showed me how to project my voice, how to move my hands and eyes to express feelings. At first, I had a hard time keeping up, but with her patience and encouragement, I performed well gradually.
As I grew older, my grandmother introduced me to more skills about performing Qinqiang Opera, including facial expressions and costume designs. She also told me that the performer’s feelings built the character, so I learned to put them into my performances, making each character come alive on stage (舞台).
Years passed, and I became more confident in my abilities. I started performing at local events, where my grandmother would proudly watch. Her smile of support filled me with joy and energy.
Today, Qinqiang Opera is not just a hobby for me but a lifelong journey of learning and growth. It has taught me the importance of hard work, the power of expression, and the beauty of cultural tradition. Every time I step onto the stage, I am reminded of my grandmother’s love and guidance, and I am thankful for the chance to carry on her legacy (遗产) through the art of Qinqiang Opera.

It was September of 1825. Jane ran out of her house and raced to the woods. She passed by a tree and fell over a pair of long legs. It was her neighbor, Abe Lincoln. Abe was sitting under the tree, reading a book. He smiled, stood up and held out his arm to help Jane up.

“Why are you running so fast?” Abe asked. “Are you hurt?”

Abe looked down at her book and then at Jane. “Reading can change one’s life,” he said quietly. Then he showed her the book about George Washington, a great leader in the US. He began to read aloud while Jane listened carefully.
“Someday I want to be as great as Washington,” said Abe. “I will be the President (总统) of the United States, too.”
“I believe you will,” said Jane. “Look at what a good leader you are now. You’ve changed my mind about reading!”
Abe smiled. “Let’s meet here every day after school and I will help you.” From then on, Jane began to read with Abe. Slowly, her hatred for reading went away. “Thank you, Abe,” Jane said. “I will never stop reading.”

Lucas was quiet but very smart. Max was good at solving computer problems. Noah used a wheelchair, but he never let it slow him down.
One day at school, Ethan heard stories about a group of bullies (霸凌者) who did bad things to others.
It wasn’t long before Ethan first met the group. One afternoon, he stayed late to finish a project. As he was leaving the school, he saw the bullies were asking for some money from a younger student.

That evening, Ethan told his parents about the bullies, and they talked to his teachers. Ethan also shared his experience with his friends. “We’ll work together,” Noah said. The four friends then joined the school’s anti-bullying (反霸凌) groups to spread kindness.
By the end of the year, the bullies stopped troubling people. The school felt safer because students stood up for each other. On the last day, the friends smiled in celebration. “We did it together,” Lucas said.

For most freshmen, August is the month for military training (军训). It serves as a good chance to meet and know our classmates and get ready for school life.
Our school’s training took place from Aug 23 to 29. One of the challenges was to make a blackboard newspaper for our new classroom. When I found out that I was in charge of (负责) this project, I was nervous. Could I try to complete this project and rehearse for the closing concert at the same time? What if my classmates wouldn’t follow my instructions?
The project began on Aug 24. The three other girls in the group were versatile (多才多艺的). My group gave up our lunch break so that we would have more time to work. One girl in my group asked about my design, saying that we should shorten the text and leave more space for pictures. The arguments between us upset me from time to time, but whenever there was an argument, I tried to be calm. I thought hard about whether or not to take her suggestions and then made some changes. I found that she had a lot of good ideas. As time went by, even when I was absent for practice, I wasn’t worried about leaving the project to her.
Finally, it was time for our project to be judged (评判). Our teacher said that no matter what the results might be, our efforts were still admired.

Tom lived on Maple Street, where most neighbors kept to themselves. One rainy Saturday, he noticed an old wooden box outside Mrs. Hale’s house. It had “Free Books—Take One, Leave One painted on the side.” Curious (好奇的), Tom opened it and found a dog storybook. He’d always loved dogs, so he took it, leaving his old science book in return.
As weeks passed, Tom checked the box every weekend. He swapped (交换) adventure novels for poetry books and even left a small note that read, “This made me laugh” in a funny storybook. One afternoon, he saw Mrs. Hale standing by the box. “I started this library 10 years ago,” she said. “After my husband died, I felt lonely. But sharing books has brought people together.”
That day, Tom met Mia, who had left a drawing of a cat in a book. They talked about their favorite stories and decided to fix the box—its paint was peeling, and the door was sticking. They repainted it blue and added a small shelf. Soon, more neighbors stopped by: Mr. Lee left gardening books, and Ms. Carter brought children’s tales.

A student stuck a note on his classmate’s back while they were at the break one day. The note said “I’m Stupid”. He asked the rest of his classmates not to tell the boy. The other students started laughing at the boy, but wouldn’t say why.
Soon, it was time for their afternoon math class. Their teacher wrote a difficult problem on the blackboard. No one was able to solve it except the boy with the note on his back.

When I was young, I was very scared of dogs. Every time I passed by a dog on the street, I would hold my grandma’s hand and step back, too scared to make a sound. My grandma, who was always patient, would calm me down and say that dogs are humans’ friends. She told me a story about a life-saving dog to help me overcome my fear.

I used to be very shy, so I usually just listened to other people’s conversations and didn’t dare to speak in public. My teacher Mrs. Smith always encouraged me to communicate with others.
Me, the lead? Was she crazy? Mrs. Smith continued, “I was thinking of you when I created the role! If you really don’t want to, I won’t force you.” Suddenly, I thought it was time to deal with my shyness and show the world who I really was. I looked at Mrs. Smith and said, “OK, I’ll try.”
After five months of practicing, the big day finally arrived. My knees shook and my heart beat as if I’d just run a mile. “It doesn’t matter how the performance will be,” said Mrs. Smith. “You’ve already shown yourself how wonderful you are. That’s the most important thing. No matter how your performance will be, I will be proud of you.”
I smiled because I knew she was right. When I stepped on the stage (舞台), I showed that I could take chances and be brave enough to make a big change for myself—a girl with new-found confidence (信心).

I was driving my friends back from a party. A bottle was passed around in the car. Everyone was taking a drink. The bottle got to me. Without too much thinking, I took a swig (一大口). It turned out to be the biggest mistake of my life.
At a stop sign, I saw a policeman sitting in the parking lot across the street. I knew he was going to follow me because the alarm light on his car turned on. All I could think was, oh no, that swig!
I pulled over and waited for him to come to my door. It felt like forever. “Can I see your driver’s license, please, Miss?” I gave it to him. He took it and went back to his car for a while. When he returned, he asked if I had been drinking.
“No,” I said. He asked me to step out of my car.
“Walk heel to toe down the white line, please.” I passed the test. Then he asked me to take an alcohol (酒精) test.
That was where I messed up. I told him I didn’t want to and didn’t understand why I had to. The officer asked me three more times, and I continued to refuse. Then he took me to the police station and called my parents.

I found that she had a lot of good ideas. As time went by, even when I was absent for practice, I wasn’t worried about leaving the project to her.
Finally, it was time for our project to be judged (评判). Our teacher said that no matter what the results might be, our efforts were still admired.

The little library wasn’t just about books anymore. It became a place where neighbors chatted, shared smiles, and started to feel like a family. Tom realized kindness doesn’t need to be big. Sometimes, a small box of books can turn a quiet street into a warm community.

“Where’s the milk, Alvin?” Jamal asked. “Hey, why are you crying?”
“No, I’m not crying,” Alvin replied. “I’m cutting onions. It makes my eyes water.”
“Let me help you,” Jamal said. He sat down at the table and searched on the Internet with his smartphone. “This website says if you chew gum (嚼口香糖) while cutting onions, you won’t cry.”
“I have tried that. It didn’t work,” Alvin said. “Any other ideas?”
“This website says if you put the onions into the fridge for fifteen minutes before cutting them, you won’t cry.”
“Too late for that now, ” Alvin said. “Anything else?”
“You can put vinegar (醋) on the cutting board,” Jamal said.
“Too bad. We are out of vinegar,” Alvin said. He was just about to head back to the cutting board when he had an idea. “There’s one more thing we could try,” he said. “Can I look at something on the Internet?”
“Sure,” Jamal said. He got up from the table and let Alvin use his smartphone.
“Thanks,” said Alvin. “You start cutting the onions, and I’ll give you an idea to try out.”
Jamal went over to the cutting board and picked up the knife. He started cutting onions as Alvin began to search. After a few minutes, Jamal’s eyes were tearing. “Any luck?” he said to Alvin.
“With what?” Alvin asked.
“With ideas for cutting onions without crying, remember?”
“Oh yeah. I’ve solved that problem.”
“How?”
“Thanks for cutting my onions, big brother!”
