Make a Difference to Your School
Your school offers great chances to study, make friends and try new things. Each term, you have time to use these chances. Also, there is time to think of ways to make a difference to your school. 1
Learn more about your school. To learn what happens around your school, join teams to your school or clubs and take part in activities. 2 These people can give you a better understanding of your school. For example, if your school has a student newspaper, check it out or consider joining it. You will know more about what is happening at school through it.
Find a need and take action. 3 Maybe you enjoy playing volleyball after class. Now think about ways to make this activity even better. You might wish your school to provide more volley balls for students to use. Once you have your idea, talk to your school to see if students could help. You could offer to hold a book sale to buy sports equipment (器材).
4 It may seem simple, but being friendly to others can help create a good environment. This includes saying thank you when a student helps you, cleaning up any mess you make, and saying hello to others in the hallways. A good attitude (态度) can spread.

2 So, ask your potential (潜在的) new friends things like where they’re from, or what they think of the homework you were given last night—general questions that are easy to answer. 3

If you ask people of different countries “Could you tell me the way to the post office?”, you will get different answers.
In Japan, people use landmarks (地标) instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. 1 The post office is across from the bus stop.”
In Kansas, America, there are no towns or buildings within miles. So instead of landmarks, people will tell you the directions and distance (距离). For example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn right, and then go another mile.”
People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions. They will often say, “Follow me.” 2
Sometimes if a person doesn’t know the answer to your question, he or she, like a New Yorker, might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don’t know.” 3 They usually give an answer, but often a wrong one. A visitor can often get lost in Yucatan!
4 You might not understand a person’s words, but maybe you can understand his or her body language. He or she will usually point to the right direction. Go on in that direction and you may find the post office!
A.You needn’t walk after them.
B.But one thing will help you everywhere.
C.People there think “I don’t know” is impolite.

China’s Huajiang Grand Canyon (大峡谷) Bridge opened on September 28, 2025. It also sets a new world record. As the highest bridge in the world, its road surface is 625 meters above the river—about twice as high as the Eiffel Tower.
The bridge runs 2,890 meters across a deep canyon called the “Fissure (裂缝) of the Earth”. The main part of the bridge is 1,420 meters long. 1 It’s part of the Liuzhi-Anlong Highway and has cut travel time a lot. Now it takes just two minutes to cross the canyon, but it used to take two hours.
2 Workers had to face sudden strong winds—some as strong as typhoons. But engineers used new technologies to get over these problems. They used a smart cable crane system (缆索起重机系统) and strong steel wires (钢索). 3 This is like a “nervous system” for the bridge. These new ways helped the project get 21 patents (专利) for its new ideas.
Besides helping with travel, the bridge is also China’s first place for “bridge tourism”. It brings together bridge viewing, extreme (极限) sports (like bungee jumping) and tourism services. 4 This will make the area a top place for tourists and help the locals live a better life.
A.Building the bridge was full of difficulties.
B.Officials think it will bring millions of visitors.
C.This makes it the longest bridge of its kind in mountain areas.
D.Traditional bridges usually use wood and stone as main materials.
E.They also put “smart cables” on the bridge to check if its structure is safe.

Learning Chinese is a journey towards understanding and speaking Chinese. It’s easy for English speakers to get upset when studying some foreign languages, especially Chinese. Take a deep breath. 1 Here are some tips to help you.
Develop an interest. Studies show that if you are interested in something, your brain is more active and it’s also easier for you to pay attention to it for a long time. 2 So if you find it boring to learn Chinese, try watching Chinese TV shows, listening to Chinese songs and reading Chinese materials.
Practice every day. Without daily practice, knowledge will flow out of your head like water leaking out of a basket. It’s better to study for half an hour every day than for two hours a week.
3 You can’t remember a word well in a very short time. So make sure to go back and review vocabulary and grammar that you’ve learned. You won’t realize how much you’ve forgotten until you look at them again.
Don’t be afraid of speaking Chinese. 4 If you want to practice speaking Chinese with Chinese speakers, Chinese clubs or Chinese corners are good places to practice your spoken Chinese.
A.Always review.
B.It actually isn’t that scary.
C.It’s as hard as you think.
D.Good learners often connect what they need to learn with something interesting.
E.You can never learn one language well unless you are brave enough to speak it.

2.根据上文“Studies show that if you are interested in something, your brain is more active and it’s also easier for you to pay attention to it for a long time.”
3.根据下文“So make sure to go back and review vocabulary and grammar that you’ve learned.” 故选A。

It is normal to feel a bit nervous about exams. Exam stress can cause you to feel nervous or depressed. If you have any of these feelings or worries about exam pressure, you are not alone. Here are some things you can do.
Open up to others. Let your trusted friends and family know if you’re having a hard time. They can be there to support you, encourage you and offer good advice. 1 Keeping it all to yourself will only make things worse, so don’t be afraid to open up.
Learn to get help. Think about all the practical support you need, and be honest with yourself about it. You are allowed to ask for help. 2 Tell your teachers about your worries. They may have talked to lots of students who are going through similar things, so they can give you some helpful advice.
3 One more thing you can do is to be proud of yourself. Think about all the things you have achieved so far. It can be helpful to write lots of things you like about yourself, and the things other people value about you, too.
Do breathing exercise. Deep breathing can help relax us in both mind and body. We can breathe deeply through our nose, then blow slowly through our mouth. 4
If you follow the things above, I’m sure you will never be worried about exams.

Do you think you are a happy child? What makes a boy or girl happy? As the saying goes, a happy child always has a hobby. We know sayings are wise and true. Having an interest you truly love can fill your days with joy and purpose.
So, do you have a hobby? Countless people have hobbies. Take Albert Einstein, for example. He played the violin very well. This hobby not only brought him happiness but also helped him think better in his work. As for me, I find my greatest pleasure in collecting stamps. 1
Hobbies are also fantastic for bringing people together and building friendships. I have a friend Jenny and she’s from the UK. She likes collecting stamps, too. 2 We love talking about our latest finds. Jenny is interested in the stories behind each stamp. She often asks me about the history and culture shown on Chinese stamps, and shows some of them to me. Through this shared hobby, we have become very close friends.
Nowadays, people mostly send emails to each other. They don’t use stamps often. 3 These small, colorful pieces of paper are like tiny windows to the world, teaching us about history, art and different cultures. Jenny even told me in an email that she uses her stamps to share interesting facts about China with her family and friends.
4 It adds beauty to our lives. As many people say, “A life without a hobby is like food without salt.” It might keep you alive, but it lacks (缺乏) the taste that makes life truly enjoyable.
A.It always makes me very happy.
B.But Jenny and I still like stamps.
C.Truly, a hobby is both fun and useful.
D.She has a lot of little dolls and they make her very happy.
E.Because of stamps, we got to know each other on the Internet.
【答案】1.A 2.E 3.B 4.C
1.根据“As for me, I find my greatest pleasure in collecting stamps!” 故选A。
2.根据“She likes collecting stamps too.”以及后文“We love talking about our latest finds.”
3.根据“They don’t use stamps often.”以及后文“These small, colorful pieces of paper are like tiny windows to the world”可知,此处应体现转折,引出两人对邮票的坚持。
4.根据“It adds beauty to our lives. As many people say, ‘A life without a hobby is like food without salt’”可知,此处位于结尾,需总结全文主旨。
Your friend asks you, “What should I do?” She sits next to you. She waits for your advice. This is hard. If you say the wrong thing, you might let her down.
When a friend has a problem, you want to help. It is easy to just say, “Everything will be OK.” 1 We say it because we feel we must say something. We are happy they asked us for help.
So, should you give advice? 2
Often, a friend just needs someone to listen. First, ask yourself: Do they want advice, or do they just need to talk? Talking can make them feel better. It is okay to ask them, “Would you like my suggestions?”
3 If you cannot think of a solution (解决办法), just say so. Your friend will understand. You can still listen carefully. Try to see the problem from their side. Later, you can think about what you would do. Then, you can come back with a few ideas.
Some problems take time. It can be hard to hear your friend talk about the same problem over and over. But letting them “talk it out” is helpful. 4 They might need to feel sure about their decision. Sometimes, just being there for them is the best help you can give.
A.It is important to be honest.
B.This isn’t what your friend needs.
C.They might be trying to find courage.
D.Yes, but you must do it the right way.
E.But this does not really help your friend.
【答案】1.E 2.D 3.A 4.C
1.根据前句“It is easy to just say, ‘Everything will be OK.’”
2.根据前文“So, should you give advice?”
3.根据“If you cannot think of a solution (解决办法), just say so. Your friend will understand.”, 选项A“诚实是很重要的”是对“想不出办法就直说”这一建议的概括,符合语境。故选A。

Most of us think the telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. However, he wasn’t the first person to think of the idea. In fact, an Italian named Antonio Meucci was officially recognized as the inventor a few years ago. Who is Meucci and why wasn’t he known for his invention at the time?
Antonio Meucci was born in Italy in 1808. He studied engineering and drawing. During his studies, Meucci started to experiment with electricity. 1 When two places were connected with wires, people in those places could hear each other talk.
In 1850, Meucci and his wife, Ester, moved to New York. Meucci was worried about his wife, because she had become very ill. 2 To solve this problem, he connected his home and his workshop with metal cables. This way, they could talk to each other conveniently.
Meucci invited a group of people to see his new invention. They listened in amazement as the voice of a singer came through the wires.
3 Even worse, Meucci never applied for a patent (专利) on his invention. Meanwhile, Alexander Graham Bell was working on the same idea, and in 1876, the patent for the telephone was given to him.
In 2002, more than a century after Meucci’s death, his work was finally recognized by the government. 4
A.He didn’t invent the telephone overnight.
B.He needed to always keep in touch with her.
C.Unluckily, only a few people saw this happen.
D.He will be known all over the world as the telephone’s inventor.
E.He discovered that sound can travel through metal cables
1.根据“During his studies, Meucci started to experiment with electricity.”以及“When two places were connected with wires, people in those places could hear each other talk.”
2.根据“Meucci was worried about his wife, because she had become very ill.”
3.根据“Meucci invited a group of people to see his new invention. They listened in amazement as the voice of a singer came through the wires.”以及“Even worse, Meucci never applied for a patent (专利) on his invention.”
4.根据“In 2002, more than a century after Meucci’s death, his work was finally recognized by the government.”

The Truth About Drinking Water
Every day, we are told to drink enough water. It not only helps our skin look nice but also helps us stay at a healthy weight. No one can live without water. 1
Some people say we should drink eight glasses of water eight times a day. That’s called the “8×8 rule”. Back in 1945, American experts said we should drink one milliliter (毫升) of water for every calorie (卡路里) of food we eat. That’s about two liters (公升) of water, or eight glasses every day. But the truth is that everyone is different. 2
So, do we really need to worry about controlling how much water we drink? Not really. Our body is smart and can tell us when we’re thirsty and need water. We have special systems that help us stay hydrated (含水的). One is called “the thirsty system”. 3 Another system is our kidneys (肾脏). They help our body keep the water and kick in well before we feel thirsty.
Of course, drinking water has lots of benefits (益处). Our body stays at the right temperature because of it. 4 And the food which is difficult to digest (消化) also won’t trouble us as long as we drink water more.
So, next time you feel thirsty, reach for a glass of water. If you are not thirsty, don’t worry too much. Your body knows what it’s doing. Just listen to it.
A.But how much water should we actually drink?
B.It protects our joints (关节) and makes our bones stronger.
C.And those differences decide what kind of water we should drink.
D.It tells us to drink water when our body’s water level is a little low.
E.How much water we need depends on our weight, age, and how active we are.
【答案】1.A 2.E 3.D 4.B
1.根据“No one can live without water.”及“Some people say we should drink eight glasses of water eight times a day.” 故选A。
2.根据“But the truth is that everyone is different.”
3.根据“One is called ‘the thirsty system’.”
4.根据“Our body stays at the right temperature because of it.”
Our road to peace
On Sept 3, a big military parade took place in Beijing. It marked the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931—1945) and the World Anti-Fascist War. 1
In 1931, Japan occupied (占领) parts of Northeast China. In 1937, it started a full invasion (侵略). 2 About 35 million Chinese were killed or injured. China made a great contribution to the victory in World War Ⅱ in 1945 and helped bring peace to the world. These experiences show the Chinese people’s love of peace, not the“law of the jungle (丛林法则)”.
3 For example, Japan is thinking about changing its pacifist Constitution (和平宪法) and the US has left some international agreements and put high taxes on imports (进口关税). These actions are bad for the world economy (经济).
The experience of the World Anti-Fascist War showed that countries must work together to solve common problems.
China now wants to grow strong by improving its economy, science, culture, and relationships with other countries. 4
The parade has shown China’s support for peace, and the country has become stronger after its painful experiences.
A.So far, the economy has developed a lot in many countries.
B.A modern army is also needed to protect China’s safety and world peace.
C.It was a history lesson for the whole world.
D.Today, the world also needs to choose between peace and war.
E.The Chinese people fought bravely for more than 10 years.

Anger is a strong feeling that can make you do and say things you don’t really mean. What can be done to control anger? 1
Firstly, you need to understand that things don’t always go the way you want them to. 2 Realizing that no one is perfect is a good start to avoid getting angry. Learn more about your school. Use rewards (奖励) to mark your progress. If you have completed part of your homework, you could take a break. 4 Or you could even “allow” yourself to go to a movie on Friday.
Ask your parents for help. If you don’t ask, your parents will never know what trouble you have. So they won’t be able to give you helpful advice.
These suggestions above could work on you. Try them out. It’s time to take action now.
A.How can you make a plan?
B.Do difficult homework first.

Having friends at school is a great way to lower the pressure you face every day.
The best way to meet new friends is quite simple: All you have to do is to talk to them. A great way to start a conversation with another person is to find out things you both have in common. 1 Things like this are called conversation starters, and you could start a conversation about anything, from a video game someone’s playing to a song they’re listening to.

D.Turn left at the big hotel and go past a bus stop.
E.Then he or she will take you through the streets of the city to the post office.

B.But Jenny and I still like stamps.
C.Truly, a hobby is both fun and useful.
D.She has a lot of little dolls and they make her very happy.

C.And those differences decide what kind of water we should drink.
D.It tells us to drink water when our body’s water level is a little low.
E.How much water we need depends on our weight, age, and how active we are.
