With phones accessible in our pocket, it’s easier than ever to take photos of nature and wildlife, providing we can find it. But what skills do the most successful wildlife photographers have? Talent, patience, curiosity and resilience. 2 The winner of Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2025 was South African wildlife photographer Wim van den Heever. His shot depicts a brown hyena lit up in an abandoned mining town in the Namibian desert and was the culmination of ten years’ work. So why was it so difficult to capture? The subject is a shy creature, mostly active at night, and the Namib Desert often succumbs to thick fog, while easterly winds can pile sand up to a metre high. “I had one or two years where cameras just got absolutely trashed,” he says. 3 The images captured in this competition are not just stunning, they are also powerful glimpses into the fragile, complex and beautiful ecosystems we share. The picture that won Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2025 is of a longhorn beetle appearing to look out at big logging machinery which is chopping down its habitat. The photographer has cleverly framed the beetle and machinery to be equal in size, which one of the judges commented on. “The photographer has given M. asper authority in this image. It does exactly what a strong photograph should do—it increases our understanding.” 4 A strong visual can not only provoke the urgency of conservation but can also give us glimpses into the unexpected. This year a Belgian photographer captured a startling image of one of the world’s only maritime lions. These big cats moved from their traditional hunting grounds in the Namib Desert in 2017 and have since learnt to hunt fur seals along the Atlantic coast. “The photo shows how resilient these animals are…that they change their habitat to survive,” says the photographer, Van Malderen. 5 What wildlife could you capture? Grab your phone, explore nature and see what you can find. 1. The 15-year-old boy from Bedfordshire, a county in the East of England, started his business journey at the age of 9 when he launched his children’s brand, Not Before Tea. The lifestyle brand for young people is based on a storybook called The Adventures of Sherb and Pip, which is about a mouse and an owl who run a sweets shop. Patterson began by selling sweets, but he soon brought all the characters in the book to life — through products such as bags and soft toys. Today, the products are sold internationally, and Patterson has just secured investment to grow the brand further. At 12, his business had earned him 65,000 pounds (566,221 yuan). In fact, Patterson’s early school years were difficult, which he often described as “fire and ice”. He wasn’t consistent with what his peers were like because he saw the world differently and was rarely invited to parties or play dates. He also had a stammer (口吃), which made him feel even lonelier. But these things didn’t hold him back. To cheer himself up, Patterson gradually immersed (使……沉浸) himself in designing different animals and writing interesting stories about them. His characters started to become popular. To battle his stammer, he tried to express himself clearly and even developed a love for public speaking, which eventually enabled him to speak on important stages, such as at the National Retail Business Awards for Teenagers. Storytelling has been a key element in Patterson’s online business journey. Now at 15, Patterson wrote a business book called Young and Mighty, which describes his search for success and happiness and also covers some of the big issues that young people face: self-esteem, finding your voice, education and creativity.   He has also set up an online academy (学院) with the same name. It is for children aged 10 to 14, who are starting to think about their future and what motivates them. He believes that passion is what drives people to achieve extraordinary things. “If you don’t have a passion for what you do and love what you do then you won’t succeed,” he said. 21.What can we know about Not Before Tea? A.It is a sweets shop in Bedfordshire. B.Its birth was inspired by a storybook. C.It is a brand well known around the world. D.It has earned Patterson 65,000 pounds in total. 22.What happened to Patterson during his early school years? A.He struggled to fit in at school. B.He went to a lot of parties. C.He had difficulty writing stories. D.He wrote a business book. 23.Which of the following best describes Patterson? A.Brave and hardworking. B.Creative and strong-willed. C.Humorous and talented. D.Honest and independent. 24.What would Patterson probably agree with according to the text? A.Storytelling ability is key to business success. B.People should plan for their future as early as possible. C.Success cannot be achieved without passion. D.Passion decides whether a person can be extraordinary. 根据第二段中“launched his children’s brand, Not Before Tea (创立了自己的儿童品牌Not Before Tea)”以及第三段中“The lifestyle brand for young people is based on a storybook called The Adventures of Sherb and Pip (这个面向年轻人的生活方式品牌基于一本名为《Sherb和Pip的冒险》的故事书)”可知,该品牌的诞生灵感来自故事书。故选B项。 22. 根据第四段中“In fact, Patterson’s early school years were difficult, which he often described as “fire and ice”. He wasn’t consistent with what his peers were like because he saw the world differently and was rarely invited to parties or play dates. He also had a stammer (口吃), which made him feel even lonelier.(事实上,Patterson早期的学校生活很艰难,他经常将其描述为“冰与火”。他和同龄人不一样,因为他看世界的方式不同,他很少被邀请参加聚会或玩耍约会。他还有口吃,这使他更孤独)”可知,Patterson难以融入早期的学校生活。故选A项。 23. 沉浸) himself in designing different animals and writing interesting stories about them (Patterson逐渐沉浸在设计不同动物、写相关有趣故事的事情中)”可知,Patterson有创造力。根据第五段“To battle his stammer, he tried to express himself clearly and even developed a love for public speaking (为了克服口吃,他努力清晰地表达自己,甚至爱上了公开演讲)”可知,Patterson勇敢面对并解决困难、意志坚定。故选B项。 24. 根据最后一段中““If you don’t have a passion for what you do and love what you do then you won’t succeed,” he said. (他说:“如果你对你所做的事情没有热情,没有爱,那么你就不会成功。”)”可知,Patterson认为成功离不开热情。故选C项。 Teaching is widely recognized to be a stressful occupation, characterized by numerous and varied challenges: administrative burdens, long hours, classroom management difficulties, to name but a few. 25 They are also paid less than other workers with similar experience and education, a gap that has grown from 4.3% in 1996 to 17% in 2015. Further, teachers face significant social and political scrutiny as to how they do their jobs . 26 The statistics on teacher turnover are grim: Research estimates that between 19% and 30% of new teachers leave the field within the first five years of teaching, which can reduce the team spirits of their campus community and negatively affect student learning. In the most recent PDK poll, half of teachers surveyed said they had considered leaving the profession within the last year, with low pay and high stress most frequently cited as the reasons. Of course, teacher stress is not unique to the United States. In fact, research has yielded remarkably consistent findings around the world, with roughly 20-25% of the teaching workforce reporting high levels of stress. But if it’s clear that teacher stress is widespread, it’s not always clear how teacher stress should be defined. Traditionally, educational policy research has focused on working conditions (i.e., school administration) as the main driver of occupational health. That is, teacher stress tends to be viewed as a result of working in a stressful environment, often characterized as lacking sufficient funding or effective leadership. 27 In many schools, some teachers are stressed out while others are not; but if working conditions were all that mattered, then every teacher in the school would be equally stressed. Chris Kyriacou and others have argued that teacher stress is better understood as resulting from a mismatch between the pressures and demands made on educators and their ability to cope with those demands. Workforce conditions alone are not sufficient to explain why some teachers are highly stressed. Rather, what matters most is how each teacher sees the demands they face in relation to the resources they have available to meet those demands. 28 And if this is true, then it should be possible to identify and intervene with teachers who are most vulnerable to stress, above and beyond efforts to improve the larger working environment. A.These demands take a toll, resulting in job dissatisfaction, workplace fatigue, burnout, and reduced occupational commitment. B.Just as beauty is said to be in the eye of the beholder, stress depends on the teacher’s unique view of their classroom. C.For example, this holds true for 25% of teachers in Great Britain and Italy; 20-22% in Malaysia and Germany; and 25-26% in Australia and the U.S. D.However, if only 20-25% of teachers report high levels of stress, then that would suggest that the working environment itself is only part of the issue. E.Teachers are isolated from colleagues for much of the day, spending less than 5% of their work time collaborating with peers. F.Clearly, then, there must be more to the story. 25.根据前句“Teaching is widely recognized to be a stressful occupation, characterized by numerous and varied challenges: administrative burdens, long hours, classroom management difficulties, to name but a few.(人们普遍认为教学是一项压力很大的职业,其特点是面临各种各样的挑战:行政负担、工作时间长、课堂管理困难等等。)”和后句“They are also paid less than other workers with similar experience and education, a gap that has grown from 4.3% in 1996 to 17% in 2015.(他们的工资也低于其他具有相似经验和教育背景的员工,差距从1996年的4.3%扩大到2015年的17%。)” E“Teachers are isolated from colleagues for much of the day, spending less than 5% of their work time collaborating with peers.(教师一天中的大部分时间都与同事隔绝,与同事合作的时间不到5%。)” 26.根据上文和后文“The statistics on teacher turnover are grim: Research estimates that between 19% and 30% of new teachers leave the field within the first five years of teaching, which can reduce the team spirits of their campus community and negatively affect student learning. In the most recent PDK poll, half of teachers surveyed said they had considered leaving the profession within the last year, with low pay and high stress most frequently cited as the reasons. (关于教师流动的统计数据令人担忧:研究估计,19%到30%的新教师在教学的头五年内离开了这个领域,这可能会降低教师队伍的团队精神,并对学生的学习产生负面影响。在最近的PDK民意调查中,一半的受访教师表示,他们在去年考虑过离开教师行业,最常见的原因是工资低和压力大。)”可知,本段主要介绍教师面临各种各样的挑战所带来的影响。所以选择项A“These demands take a toll, resulting in job dissatisfaction, workplace fatigue, burnout, and reduced occupational commitment. (这些要求造成了损失,导致工作不满、工作疲劳、倦怠和职业承诺减少。)”符合上下文语境。故选A。 27.根据前句“That is, teacher stress tends to be viewed as a result of working in a stressful environment, often characterized as lacking sufficient funding or effective leadership. (也就是说,教师压力往往被视为在压力环境中工作的结果,通常以缺乏足够的资金或有效的领导为特征。)”和后文“In many schools, some teachers are stressed out while others are not; but if working conditions were all that mattered, then every teacher in the school would be equally stressed. (一些老师压力很大,而另一些则没有;但是,如果工作条件是唯一重要的,那么学校里的每个老师都会同样的压力。)”可知,这里继续介绍教师工作环境与压力之间的联系。所以选择项D“However, if only 20-25% of teachers report high levels of stress, then that would suggest that the working environment itself is only part of the issue. (然而,如果只有20-25%的教师报告高水平的压力,那么这就表明工作环境本身只是问题的一部分。)”符合上下文语境。故选D。 28.根据前句“Rather, what matters most is how each teacher sees the demands they face in relation to the resources they have available to meet those demands. (相反,最重要的是每位教师如何看待他们所面临的需求与他们所拥有的资源之间的关系,以满足这些需求。)”和后句“And if this is true, then it should be possible to identify and intervene with teachers who are most vulnerable to stress, above and beyond efforts to improve the larger working environment. (如果这是真的,那么除了努力改善更大的工作环境之外,我们应该有可能识别和干预那些最容易受到压力影响的教师。)”可知,不同的教师的压力可能不尽相同。所以选择项B“Just as beauty is said to be in the eye of the beholder, stress depends on the teacher’s unique view of their classroom. (就像情人眼里出西施一样,压力也取决于老师对课堂的独特看法。)”符合上下文语境。故选B。 题型04 概要写作 Flexible Thinking for Your Career Does work ever leave you feeling stuck with limited opportunities to be creative? To prosper, you might want to increase your brain’s flexibility. But is this even possible, and if so, how? Most jobs require the ability to problem-solve and cope with challenges, at least to a certain extent. Imagine a teacher who has a new and very nervous student in the class. If that teacher is a flexible thinker, he or she will be able to adapt the classroom management, even if he or she hasn’t seen this situation before. According to Leonard Mlodinow, author of Elastic, flexible thinkers rely on idea generation and imagination — they are willing to experiment and take risks. “Elastic thinking, or flexible thinking, is what you need when the circumstances change, and you are dealing with something new. It’s not about following rules.” Therefore, instead of following the typical procedure for welcoming a new student, the teacher might come up with a tailored response, based on prediction and previous experience. So, how can you become a more flexible thinker? According to Dr Lisa Feldman Barrett, it’s all about exercising the brain. One way of doing this, she says, is through exposure to a variety of experiences, which make it easier to adjust to new situations. A lot of companies now consider flexible thinking in the workplace, especially when it comes to design. Workspaces may have couches where workers can lie down and relax, giving them the space to come up with and process new ideas. Mlodinow says it’s very important to take time to daydream, listen to ideas and concepts you disagree with and spend time doing activities outside of your comfort zone. This will help you understand multiple points of view and therefore blossom in many different aspects of your career. So, if you want to make a change, you can become a flexible thinker too, with a little practice. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】       Flexible thinking is essential for career prosperity, as it helps people adapt to new situations and solve problems with imagination rather than rigid rules. 1. Qi is part of a team working on HS2, a new high-speed railway that will eventually connect some of the UK’s biggest cities using trains that can travel up to 224 miles per hour. “The most rewarding thing about construction for me is getting to see a design on paper become a(n) 11 project,” says Qi. With HS2, she also enjoys working on a project that is bringing new opportunities and creating new jobs. Seeing something go from an idea to a visible part of the world is something she finds incredibly 12 Qi studied architecture at university before taking a job with an engineering company. Architecture involves designing buildings and structures, but Qi discovered that her true passion was in engineering, where she could work on 13 projects like railways. In her job, she feels 14 about connecting people, and she believes that trains and railways are a vital part of that connection. Teaching is widely recognized to be a stressful occupation, characterized by numerous and varied challenges: administrative burdens, long hours, classroom management difficulties, to name but a few. Flexible Thinking for Your Career Does work ever leave you feeling stuck with limited opportunities to be creative? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ $
