For hundreds of years, people thought humans were above nature, not part of it. They believed only humans could make and use tools, and only humans could speak and communicate meaningfully. That changed when Jane Goodall came.
In 1957, 23-year-old Goodall knew a lot about animals and wanted to work with them. Three years later, with anthropologist (人类学家) Louis Leakey’s help, she went to Africa’s Gombe forest. There, she watched chimps (黑猩猩) closely and named them instead of using numbers—no researcher had done that before.
Soon, Goodall saw surprising things. A male chimp named David Greybeard broke a dry stick to get insects. Other chimps used tools too. She also found they had a good communication system and different personalities—some kind, some tough.
These discoveries made people rethink being human and drew other scientists to study apes (猩猩). Later, Goodall left Gombe to protect chimps, because forests were cut and apes were hunted. She traveled to share her experiences. In 1991, she started Roots & Shoots, a program now in over 60 countries. It has inspired millions of students to make the world better for all.
Goodall is gone, but her voice still guides us to care for nature.
37.What can we learn about Jane Goodall’s work in Gombe forest?
A.She went to the forest alone in 1957.
B.She only studied chimps’ personalities.
C.She was the first to use numbers to call chimps.
D.She found that chimps could use tools to get food.
38.Why did Jane Goodall leave the Gombe forest?
A.She wanted to protect chimps and their homes.

39.Which of the following is the right order of Jane Goodall’s events?

40.What’s the best title for this passage?
A.How to Study Chimps in Gombe forest. B.Why Chimps Can Use Tools Like Humans.

How is everything going? It’s January 1st tomorrow. It is a tradition to set a new goal for the coming year in my country. I am writing to tell you about my New Year’s resolutions.
The first one is about my self-improvement. I am going to take part in some social practice activities in my free time. I want to learn something new and get good experience from these activities. At the same time, I can make new friends to have a colorful life.
The second resolution is about my study. We will have art and music tests in the high school entrance exam (中考). I feel a little worried because I only know how to paint, sing and dance, but the tests are also about the ability to appreciate (欣赏) artistic beauty. I need to do more art and music practice before the tests.
The last one has to do with my health. I am busy with my study on schooldays. Sometimes I feel tired so I need to do something different on weekends. I think yoga (瑜伽) can be a good activity. It can not only help relax my body and mind but also make me healthier. And there are also many yoga videos online, so I can try it at home.
What are your New Year’s resolutions? Please write to me soon.
Happy New Year!
Yours,
Anna
