On October 11, over 1,600 athletes started swimming in the 2025 Ironman World Championship Triathlon (铁人三项世界锦标赛). After their long swim, they biked for over 100 miles. Then they ran a marathon. Sixty athletes never finished the race. But 80-year-old Natalie Grabow did, setting the record as the oldest woman ever to finish the race.
Ms. Grabow has long been athletic. But when she was growing up, girls were more likely to be seen as cheerleaders than as athletes. When her kids were young, she began playing tennis. She took up running when she went back to work as a software (软件) developer.
After a while, some of her running partners-the people she’d met at the local park who joined her for morning jogs three times a week-began to take part in triathlons. They believed that doing different activities lowered their chances of getting injured while exercising. Ms. Grabow was also interested. She wasn’t good at it at first, but she improved. In 2005, she took part in a half-Ironman for the first time. In her early sixties, she was good enough to make it to the Ironman World Championship.
Now Ms. Grabow has completed the Ironman 11 times in total. The only thing different in 2025 is that she ran the course as an 80-year-old. There was no one else in her age group. But she ran the same course as everyone else-in the same heat, and up the same hills. She never thought of stopping. It took her 16 hours, 45 minutes, and 26 seconds. But she made it.
As she finished, the announcer called out, “That’s truly amazing!” Ms. Grabow was extremely tired, but she was also pleased, “I am so happy and grateful that I can still race in this sport at my age,” she said.
4. What can we know about Ms. Grabow’s childhood?
A. Girls were seldom recognized as athletes. B. She loved cheerleading.
C. She was good at tennis. D. Boys were better at sports.
5. What was unique for Ms. Grabow in the 2025 race?
A. She changed the course. B. She raced at an advanced age.
C. She was in a special age group. D. She finished earlier than before.
6. What is the announcer’s attitude to Ms. Grabow?
A. Doubtful. B. Caring. C. Admiring. D. Uninterested.
7. Which is the best title for the text?
A. A Software Developer’s Sports Journey B. The Oldest Female Ironman Finisher
C. Stories Behind Ironman Championship D. The Most Impressive Ironman Race

When a child feels sick, one of the first things a parent does is reach for a thermometer (温度计) . That common reaction got one company thinking. But what if the thermometer, in addition to measuring body temperature, could serve as a communication device? Could it then connect people with information about infections (传染病) and gather real-time data (数据) on diseases as they spread? That is the idea behind health data business. A company, called Kinsa, sells such “smart” thermometers.
Over the past several weeks, Kinsa has been following the spread and severity (严重性) of flu-like symptoms across the country. The company says its findings are similar to those reported by the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) .
The CDC collects information about the spread of the flu from state and regional reports. But Kinsa is able to identify high rates of infection in even smaller areas. Fast and detailed information about how disease is spreading can make a difference during a health crisis. If you knew when and where a disease was starting, you could target the people who needed the treatment and potentially prevent pandemics from occurring.
A Kinsa thermometer sells for anywhere between $14. 99 and $49. 99 in the U. S. Users connect the device through Bluetooth wireless technology to a smartphone app. The software program asks questions about a person’s condition.
The user’s personal information is kept private. With its thermometers in 500, 000 homes nationwide, Kinsa says it receives 25, 000 temperature readings every day. The company cannot identify diseases or recognize differences between different kinds of diseases. But by gathering data about individuals’ body temperatures and other information, Kinsa can report where flu-like symptoms are rising.
Some companies, such as drug companies, want to know where and how diseases are spreading. Then they fill stores with products and change marketing plans. Kinsa is also starting an effort with some U. S. businesses, which buy the thermometers for their employees. When an employee has a high temperature, Kinsa can notify the person about available health care help.
8. What drove the rise of “smart” thermometers?
A. The harm of the disease. B. The competition in medicine industry.
C. A company’s creative thinking. D. Modern communication technology.
9. Why is the CDC’s information collection mentioned?
A. To show Kinsa’s advantages. B. To stress the importance of data exchange.
C. To explain the difficulty in collecting data. D. To prove the CDC’s support for Kinsa.
10. What can Kinsa know from the users of the thermometer?
A. The cause of the diseases. B. Areas where diseases spread.
C. The treatment patients need. D. The personal information of patients.
11. What does the underlined word “notify” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Teach. B. Treat. C. Protect. D. Inform.
D
The hike to the lost Incan city of Choquequirao is one of the most difficult in Peru. From the town of Cachora, which is 161km west of Cusco, it's an 18km walk to Capuliyoc Mountain, then down to Playa Rosalina, where travellers camp for the night. Waking early, travelers then have to cross the Apurímac River and walk uphill to camp close to the ruins. Then, the next morning, it's another 2km walk up to the ruins, 3, 100m above sea level. To get back? Well, it's the same way you came.
“I've had people in their 60s and 70s do it,” said Juan Barrios, a guide from the Adventure Life company. “But some people come out thinking that because it's only 28km from the drop off they can do it in a day. Six or seven days for the hike is best.”
It makes sense, then, that Choquequirao draws only about 30 people a day during the high season (June through August). Compare that to the 2, 500 people who arrive each day at the famous Incan city of Machu Picchu.
But for those who make the journey, the rewards (回报) are great: beautiful mountain views at every turn, and the chance to explore the wonderful ruins nearly alone.
Believed to be created around the same time as Machu Picchu, in 1445, Choquequirao is actually larger than better-known Machu Picchu. But very little has been written about Peru's other lost city and researchers are still uncovering new parts of the ruins, leaving life on the mountain relatively untouched.
But officials say that the building of the first cable car (缆车) to Choquequirao will shorten the several-day walk to a 15-minute cable car ride. As a result, the number of travellers that now make the journey each week could turn into 3,000 visitors per day.
Choquequirao is beautiful now because of how untouched it is. Even though the lost city was discovered by Spanish explorer Juan Arias Díaz in 1710, the ruins still make you feel as though you're the first to find them. Will it be the same when more travellers flood in (大量涌入)?
12. What does the first paragraph centre on?
A. How tall Choquequirao is. B. How to get to Choquequirao easily.
C. What great views Choquequirao has. D. How hard the trip to Choquequirao is.
13. In what way is Choquequirao different from Machu Picchu?
A. Choquequirao is older. B. Choquequirao is quieter.
C. Choquequirao is smaller. D. Choquequirao is better known.
14. How are the ruins of Choquequirao?
A. They're still being dug out. B. They're in a generally poor condition.
C. They're being renewed at the moment. D. They've been researched internationally.
15. What does the author think of Choquequirao in the future?
A. It will be more attractive.
B. It will develop at a slow speed.
C. It won't necessarily take a turn for the better.
D. It won't be more popular than Machu Picchu.

A couple of days ago, there were many people on the bus. Halfway down the road, the driver suddenly stopped the bus by the side of the road and said, "I'm going to have dinner first. I'm hungry." Then he began to eat fried rice noodles while talking on the phone. After a while, many passengers urged (催促) the driver to go ahead, but the driver replied rudely, "Can't you see I'm enjoying my noodles? I'm so hungry."
After a few minutes someone wanted to get off the bus, but was refused by the driver. He explained that nobody could get off because it was NOT a bus stop! Standing beside the driver, I watched him have the last of the noodles, thinking that we could finally start now. However, the driver took out another bag of soup!
I began to feel a little angry because I would be late for an important meeting. So I urged the driver to hurry up. However, the driver suggested politely that I should ask for a leave.
When the soup was about to be finished, the driver picked up the phone again, looking in the rear-view mirror (后视镜) from time to time as if he were waiting for someone. At this time all the passengers on the bus began to shout, "We have waited too long. Start right now!" Suddenly, a police car stopped in front of our bus. We all thought that the policemen could help us and we could go at once.

【答案】4. A 5. B 6. C 7. B

A. Teach. B. Treat. C. Protect. D. Inform.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. B 11.

【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. C

【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第三段的“But very little has been written about Peru's other lost city and researchers are still uncovering new parts of the ruins, leaving life on the mountain relatively untouched.(但关于秘鲁另一座失落的城市的报道很少,研究人员仍在发掘废墟的新部分,使山上的生活相对未受影响)”可知,Choquequirao的废墟仍在挖掘中。故选A。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的“Choquequirao is beautiful now because of how untouched it is. Even though the lost city was discovered by Spanish explorer Juan Arias Díaz in 1710, the ruins still make you feel as though you're the first to find them. Will it be the same when more travellers flood in (大量涌入)?(Choquequirao现在很美,因为它是如此的原汁原味。尽管这座失落的城市是在1710年由西班牙探险家胡安·阿里亚斯(Juan Arias) Díaz发现的,但它的废墟仍然会让你觉得自己是第一个发现它们的人。当更多的游客涌入时,情况还会一样吗?)”可推知,Choquequirao在未来不一定会变得更好,故选C。

I'm sorry to hear you got criticized by your teacher for using AI to finish your homework. Using AI in this way isn’t a good idea as it doesn’t help you truly learn. Homework is meant to test and improve your knowledge and skills.
My advice is to be honest with your teacher. Promise to rely on your own efforts from now on. Make a study plan and break tasks into small steps. If you’re stuck, ask teachers or classmates for help. This way, you’ll make real progress.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Much to our surprise, two policemen stepped onto the bus. They quickly scanned the passengers and walked straight toward a man sitting quietly in the back. “You’re under arrest for theft,” one officer said firmly. The man turned pale and didn’t resist. Then the driver stood up and explained calmly, “I got a tip that two suspects were on this bus. I had to keep everyone inside until the police arrived.” We were stunned — his “selfish” meal was actually a clever delay tactic to prevent the thieves from escaping!
With the thieves taken away by the police, all the passengers broke into relieved smiles. Someone even clapped the driver on the shoulder and apologized for misunderstanding him. The driver just grinned and said, “Now that my ‘dinner’ is over, let’s get you all home safely.” As the bus finally pulled away, the atmosphere was warm with gratitude. What had felt like rude behavior turned out to be quiet heroism — and we’d all misjudged him too soon.
