A 100-year-old shoe store in Iowa, America, is proving that there is a way to run a business in a small town even if you don’t use the Internet.
Weaver’s Leather Store has been open since 1925 and is still going strong. Their secret is just doing a good job for their customers. They always take time to listen to each customer’s needs and make sure they leave with the perfect fit. “We have shoes in every state,” Tim Weaver said. He is the third generation of Weavers who have made the shoe store their life’s dream.
“We never had a website — just word of mouth and people coming in,” said Tim. The way the store runs has changed little from how Tim’s father, LeRoy Weaver, ran it since he took over the business from his own father. The machines the family uses are from many years ago. One of them was probably built in the 1930s.
Another thing that has given them an advantage is the stacked storage (堆叠式存储) of shoes. They probably have about 13,000 pairs of shoes. A salesman once told Tim, “You can never sell an empty shelf.” Therefore, they always make sure to keep the shelves full.
The future of the store looks bright as the next generation prepares to step in. Colin Weaver, 26, and his brother Tanner, 29, plan to someday take over the store. Colin shared his journey, saying that while he was considering his choices during college, he finally realized, “Nothing else could bring me the same joy and purpose that the store does.”
The family knows just how lucky they have been. In an age where technology and the Internet can make or break a company, this small shop has left a big footprint (足迹) with not so much as an online ad. “Not too many people can say that. It’s an honor,” Tim said. “That’s what we’re here for — to keep the business going through generations.”
24. What is the key to Weaver’s Leather Store’s success?
A. Good online marketing. B. A well-known salesman.
C. Excellent customer service. D. A high-tech production line.
25. What is special about the store?
A. It depends on different machines. B. It often changes its website design.
C. It offers skill development programs. D. It sticks to a time-tested business model.
26. What does Colin’s realization during college mainly show?
A. His pressure from family expectations. B. His love for the family business.
C. His enjoyment of college life. D. His respect for shoemakers.
27. What would be the best title of this passage?
A. Tradition Can Survive in the Digital Age
B. Technology Matters to Business Success
C. Family Members Should Deepen Communication
D. The Younger Generation Prefers Challenging Jobs

France is famous the world over for its wonderful food. If you were lucky enough to enjoy a French meal, you would most likely be offered some bread to eat with it. The most popular bread they bake is called a baguette. Ten million baguettes are sold every year in France. Because the French expect their bread to be super fresh, most of France’s 30, 000 bakers have to end their day by throwing into the waste bin any remaining baguettes.
Frenchman Franck Wallet has thought about this food waste issue for many years. He originally trained to be an urban (城市的) planner and worked in that area for many years. But his mind would regularly turn to the problems of what to do with wasted food — especially baguettes. He began to talk with some engineers to see if they could come up with a solution. In 2016, a solution was found. They called the machine the “Crumbier”.
When a good baguette is just made, it is crispy on the outside and as soft as a cloud on the inside. Once it has cooled down the bread soon becomes hard. Before the Crumbier, this old bread would be thrown away. Today, if that bread is placed into the Crumbier, it is very quickly turned into very fine breadcrumbs (面包屑). These can be mixed with fresh flour (面粉), salt and water and baked again like normal bread.
Bread made with Crumbier breadcrumbs has a darker colour, but just a little bit. The taste is also a little different and has been described as having the flavour of toast. Once the breadcrumbs have been produced, they can last up to six months if they have been packed properly. Because less water is used in Crumbier bread, it will last a little longer. The Crumbier is now on sale and bakers throughout France are making sure they have one. No one wants to waste food.
28. What do most of French bakers do at the end of their day?
A. Prepare the materials for the next day. B. Give the remaining bread out for free.
C. Throw the remaining bread away. D. Sell the bread at a very low price.
29. What did Franck Wallet care about most?
A. The waste of bread. B. The new taste of bread.
C. The freshness of bread. D. The popularity of bread.
30. What is special about the bread made with Crumbier breadcrumbs?
A. It has a much darker colour. B. It keeps for a shorter time.
C. It takes less time to bake. D. It tastes like toast.
31. Which word best describes bakers’ attitude to Crumbier in France?
A. Doubtful. B. Uninterested. C. Supportive. D. Unclear.
D
The jack fruit is a delicious fruit found throughout certain parts of Asia. But there is more to the fruit than just its taste. When considering the fruit’s English name, it is easy to become overwhelmed with questions like: “Who is Jack? And why does he have his own fruit?”
Surprisingly, “jack fruit” isn’t a person’s name at all. The fruit’s name originally comes from the southern Indian word chakka pazham, with India thought to be the fruit’s place of origin. Portuguese explorers who journeyed to this region went on to call it jack, which leads us to the current English name of jack fruit, according to National Public Radio(NPR). Unfortunately, no one called Jack has been proven to be involved at any point in this process.
There is another food, however, that was directly named after a person—the sandwich. In the 18th century, playing card games late into the night became fashionable in British high society. John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, started the habit of ordering pieces of cold beef between two pieces of bread in order to get a late-night snack without having to leave the gaming table or use a knife and fork.
This newly-created snack kept hands clean so card players could continue on without dirtying their cards. The midnight snack quickly became popular among everyday people, and before long everyone was making their own sandwiches. That is how the sandwich was invented and got its name.
Away from the world of food, there are more examples of names inspired by people. Long johns, the warm trousers that keep us warm in winter, are said to have been named after the US boxer John L. Sullivan who took to wearing a similar type of garment in the ring (比赛).
There are many other interesting etymologies(词源) in the English language like these. So the next time you find an interesting name, why not explore its history too?
32. What does the underlined word “overwhelmed” in the first paragraph probably mean?
A. Puzzled. B. Excited. C. Worried. D. Annoyed.
33. Where does the jack fruit’s name come from?
A. A place in India. B. An Indian word.
C. A Portuguese explorer. D. A discoverer of the fruit.
34. What do we know about the sandwich according to the text?
A. It was named after a popular card game.
B. It was once eaten as a snack in the daytime.
C. It was first popular among the UK’s middle class.
D. It was created for the convenience of playing cards.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing this article?
A. To raise readers’ interest in etymology. B. To introduce things named after people.
C. To stress the importance of learning history. D. To explain the effects of people’s names on food.

M: Have you looked for a summer job lately, Maria?
W: Well, things are a bit difficult. I saw some offers for shop assistance, but that seemed boring. I’d love to have a job as a swimming coach because I studied it last summer.
M: I understand.
W: Anyway I found a hotel that’s looking for a receptionist. They were happy to meet with me and I’ll start in two weeks.
M: Oh, good. You’ll meet many interesting people in the hotel.
W: Right. Well, the hotel is not close to my house. There aren’t any buses that go there. I’ll just drive. It’s too far to ride my bike.
M: I see. Is that a problem?
W: Hmm, well, I’ll pay a lot for petrol.
M: Where is the hotel? Is it near the beach?
W: No, it’s in the mountains. It’s got a great view. You can see our town and the forest to the west.
M: Wow, cool. Well, I hope you have a lot of visitors.
W: Me, too. Well, there’s a new movie at seven this evening in West Theater. Would you like to go to see it together? Mike and Tina will go to.
M: Great! I’ll have dinner with my grandparents first and then I’ll meet you there at 6:30.

C 25. D 26. B 27. A
根据第二段中的“Their secret is just doing a good job for their customers. They always take time to listen to each customer’s needs and make sure they leave with the perfect fit. (他们的秘诀就是为顾客做好服务。他们总是花时间倾听每个顾客的需求,确保他们离开时能找到最合适的鞋子)”可知,Weaver’s Leather Store成功的关键是出色的客户服务。故选C项。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中Tim所说的“We never had a website — just word of mouth and people coming in (我们从来没有网站 —— 只是靠口碑和顾客上门)”以及“The way the store runs has changed little from how Tim’s father, LeRoy Weaver, ran it since he took over the business from his own father. (这家商店的经营方式与Tim的父亲LeRoy Weaver接手其父亲的生意后的经营方式相比,几乎没有什么变化)”可知,这家店的特别之处在于其经营方式与父辈、祖辈时期相比几乎没有变化,即坚守经过时间检验的经营模式。故选D项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中的“Colin shared his journey, saying that while he was considering his choices during college, he finally realized, “Nothing else could bring me the same joy and purpose that the store does.” (Colin分享了他的经历,他说,当他在大学期间考虑自己的选择时,他最终意识到,“没有什么能像这家店一样给我带来同样的快乐和目标。”)”可知,Colin在大学期间意识到,没有其他事情能像家族鞋店一样给他带来快乐和目标,这主要体现了他对家族生意的热爱。故选B项。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“A 100-year-old shoe store in Iowa, America, is proving that there is a way to run a business in a small town even if you don’t use the Internet. (美国爱荷华州一家拥有100年历史的鞋店证明,即使不使用互联网,也能在小城镇成功经营企业)”可知,文章主要讲述了美国爱荷华州一家拥有100年历史的鞋店——Weaver’s Leather Store,它证明了即使不使用互联网,也能在小城镇成功经营企业。因此,“Tradition Can Survive in the Digital Age(传统能够在数字时代存续)”最符合文章主旨,适宜作为文章标题。故选A项。

C. Supportive. D. Unclear.
C 29. A 30. D 31. C

A 33. B 34. D 35. A

根据第二段“The fruit’s name originally comes from the southern Indian word chakka pazham, with India thought to be the fruit’s place of origin.(这种水果的名字最初来自印度南部的单词chakka pazham,印度被认为是这种水果的原产地)”可知,杰克果的名字从一个印度词来的。故选B。
