Maggie, a girl of thirteen years old, lived on the west coast of the United States. She had never experienced an earthquake before; she only prepared for it. As long as she could remember, preparing for an earthquake was common at her school. Her family had made plans as well in case of a natural disaster.
One day, Maggie arrived home from school at the usual time. However, it was not the same as usual. She was home alone. Her mom would be driving home on the busy freeway and her dad was to arrive at the airport. He was coming home from a two-week business trip.
After finishing her homework, Maggie felt a little hungry, so she went to the kitchen to find something to eat. Just then she felt a shake, then the violent shaking. Maggie quickly ran under the large table in the dining room. The sounds of breaking glass and the crashing of many things were deafening, and Maggie hugged herself in fear.
After what seemed like a very long time, the earthquake appeared to be over. Maggie could hear the sound of water rushing below her in the basement. And there was the smell of natural gas in the air. Maggie knew where the main water valve (阀门) was and how to turn it off. Dad had ever shown her before.
Slowly and carefully she came out from under the table. The once tidy home was then almost unrecognizable. Walls had fallen down and many things in the room were in a mess. As Maggie approached the open basement door, she could see the steps. Carefully she made her way down into the dark basement.
While placing her feet firmly on the floor, Maggie felt a sudden pain as a large piece of wood hit her head and shoulder. She fell unconsciously onto a pile of boxes. An hour later, she woke up and found her parents beside her. She smiled weakly at the sight of her parents, her heart filled with a sense of peace after the terrible experience.

The village super league, or “Cun Chao” in Chinese, is a soccer game among different villages in Rongjiang county, Guizhou Province, and it is so down-to-earth but popular that it has attracted not only the attention of football legend Michael Owen but also millions of Chinese netizens, who are paying attention to this non-professional (非职业的) football league.
The players come from a variety of backgrounds. They are shopkeepers, drivers, students, carpenters, and brick factory workers. Their ages range from 15 to over 40 years old. At the game site, representatives (代表) wearing various traditional national costumes play national musical instruments and enter the field with the players, and perform songs and dances.
“This kind of football game is natural and with ‘pureness’ and it is driven by the love of the ordinary people not the economic benefits. When learning a new language, our journey begins with grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Yet the deepest experience happens when language is presented through culture. The recent World Chinese Language Conference (世界汉语大会) in Beijing explained this approach clearly. By presenting language education through cultural experiences — whether through tea, calligraphy or opera — Chinese language instructors worldwide are making use of the richness of tradition to build a connection.
A central idea stressed at the conference was that Chinese characters provide a basis for understanding the cultural logic that shaped the language. At the conference, participants from different corners of the world shared how cultural interest had inspired their language journeys. Alessandro Tosco, Italian director of the Confucius Institute in Sicily, described how Chinese opera offered him a way to understand not only the language but also its philosophical (哲学的) and emotional meanings.
The global spread of Chinese further stresses the link between culture and language. Tea serves as a historical example of this. As it traveled from Yunnan and Sichuan across the ancient Tea Horse Road, so too did Chinese words, philosophies and practices. The Chinese character “cha” developed into “chai” across Central Asia, while the Amoy dialect of Fujian province exported “te” to Europe. A single word thus carries with its centuries of exchange, reflecting both linguistic development and cultural spread. Teaching such word-origin stories not only enriches vocabulary but also develops a sense of historical and global awareness, strengthening the idea that language is closely linked to its cultural basis.
Finally, the World Chinese Language Conference showed that cultural experience is not secondary but basic to effective language teaching. Culture turns the study of a language from an educational task into a journey of understanding — a journey that, in the case of Chinese, links learners to centuries of artistic, philosophical and social tradition.
12. How do we get the deepest language experience?
A. By connecting language with culture.
B. By teaching Chinese with tea culture.
C. By learning grammar and vocabulary.
D. By presenting education through culture.
13. How does Alessandro Tosco see culture’s role in language learning?
A. It is the only reason for language learning.
B. It helps find philosophy in Chinese characters.
C. It helps understand language and its deep meanings.
D. It is an effective way to memorize Chinese characters.
14. Why does the author mention the word “cha” and “te”?
A. To show Chinese words change with places.
B. To explain language and culture connect closely.
C. To suggest dialects matter more than Mandarin.
D. To prove trade routes drive Chinese word spread.
15. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. How to Learn Chinese Effectively
B. Chinese Characters and Culture Meaning
C. The World Chinese Language Conference
D. Language Learning Links to Cultural Origins
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. D

Peter had an English spelling test today. His teacher, Mr White, promised to offer prizes to those who get 100. Peter reviewed the spelling of each word carefully last night. While having the test, Peter wrote every word on his test paper quickly and confidently.
After marking the test papers, Mr White said, “Three of you win a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary get 100 on the spelling test!”
Mr White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered.
After Mr White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribution” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare it with the one on the word list. It turned out that he had spelled it wrong.
Staring at the red sign “100” which was written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him,“We ought to be an honest person.”

【答案】范文
Peter raised his hand slowly and nervously, his fingers trembling slightly as he did so. “Mr. White, I didn’t get 100 in the test. I missed a word,” he confessed, his voice barely above a whisper. He stood up, clutching his favorite dictionary and his test paper tightly in his hands. With a deep breath, he approached his teacher and handed them over. “I spelled ‘contribution’ with an ‘si’ instead of a ‘ti’,” he explained, his cheeks flushing with embarrassment. As Peter walked back to his desk, he could feel the eyes of his classmates on him, their expressions a mix of surprise and curiosity. The room was silent, save for the soft rustling of papers as everyone processed the unexpected revelation.
The teacher, Mr White, praised Peter for his honesty. Mr White held up Peter’s test paper. “Class,” he said, “Peter did something even more important than spelling every word correctly in a test.” Mr White smiled at Peter. “He taught us all a lesson on being honest.” He looked around, finding that many of his classmates were smiling at him. “Peter, I want you to have this dictionary because you set a good example to all of us.” Mr White said.

The game is providing not only values of sports, but also a way of socializing with low costs,” an expert noted. “This kind of atmosphere is very rarely seen and is precious, especially for people in urban areas who are getting increasingly busy and under great work pressure, and when they look at the fun, relaxing and down-to-earth way of life in the countryside, they will naturally be interested,” experts said. There is at least one good effect brought by the “Cun Chao” to Chinese soccer — to make more people see the pureness of joy and encourage them to play soccer.
Today, more and more grassroots sports events are held in the mountains and are using sports as a medium to show the unique charm of the local area, reflecting an energetic lifestyle filled with agricultural activities and rural fun.

After marking the test papers, Mr White said, “Three of you win a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary get 100 on the spelling test!”
Mr White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered.
After Mr White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribution” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare it with the one on the word list. It turned out that he had spelled it wrong.
