I used to believe that only words could catch the essence of the human soul The
literary works contained such distinct stories that they shaped the way we saw the world.
Words were what composed the questions we sought to uncover and the answers to those
questions themselves.Words were everything.
高三年级第三次质量检测三

That belief changed.
In an ordinary math class,my teacher posed a simple question:What's 0.99 rounded
to the nearest whole number?Easy. When rounded to the nearest whole number,0.99=1.
Somehow,I thought even though 0.99 is only 0.01 away from 1,there's still a 0.01
difference. That means even if two things are onty a little different, they are still different,
so doesn't that make them completely different?
My teacher answered my question by presenting another equation 1=0.9,which
could also be expressed as 1=0.99999...repeating itself without ever ending.
There was something mysterious but attractive about the equation. The left side was
unchangeable, objective:it contained a number that ended. On the right was something
endless.number repeating itself limitless times.Yet,somehow, these two opposed things
were connected by an equal sign.
Lying in bed,I thought about how much the equation mirrored our existence. The
left side of the equation represents that sometimes life itself is so unchangeable and so
clear. The concrete, whole number of the day when you were born and the day when you
would die.But then there is that gap in between life and death. The right side means a
time and space full of limitless possibilities, and endless opportunities into the open
futre.
So that's what life is.Objective but imaginative.Unchangeable but limitless.Life is
an equation with two sides that balances itself out.Still,we can't ever truly seem to put
the perfect words to it.So possibly numbers can express ideas as equally well as words
can.For now, let's leave it at that:1=0.99999...and live a life like it
56.What does the author emphasize about words mn paragraph 1?
A.Their wide variety.

A.Life is fully expressible.only through words.
B.Life is a predictable and controllable journey.
C.Life is a balance between certainty and possibilities.
D.Life can be reduced to a simple numerical.calculation.
60.What does the author want to get across in the last paragraph?

When the patient arrives,it can barely move its body The parrot tries to spread its
green wings-一and fails--to fly.It is just one of dozens of rainbow lorikeets(彩虹鹦鹉)
being treated for a mysterious paralyzing()illness-Cases of what is ealled lorikeet
paralysis syndrome(LPS)(鹦鹉庥痹综合征have been mereasing over the past decade,
says vet Claude.Lacasse.But scientists are puzzledas to what is causing it,
Lacasse has partnered with several researcners to try solving the mystery. So far,
they've ruled out hundreds of human-made chemicals as wefl as various infectious
diseases.Their current theory is that LPS is caused by a plant the birds are eating,
something that flowers or fruits between late spring and early fall-when cases always
rise.
But researchers have no idea which plant or plants might be involved.why the
disease is getting worse or whether climate change is playing a role. For now.the main
concern is tiguring out ever yaming the sick lorikeets are eating.
Ecologist Rachele Wilson used a technique involving testing DNA in sick birds'
droppings to match it to specific plant DNA.These data suggest the birds are teeding on
more than i3 ptant species,at least 30 of which are potentially potsonous.Other
researchers are not just looking at piant DNA but also at bacterial and animal DNA to
allow for the possibility that the birds are swallowing a poisonous insect in fruit,or a
poison produced by baeteria found on a plant.
It's possible climate change plays a role by driving rainbow lorikeets to seek out
unusual food sources:Anmmais are broadening their hunting range and going into more
traditionally uninviting areas to find food, including fruit, seeds and, strangely, even
meat.
With climate change causing more extreme weather events and intensely hot
summers, the need to find what's paralyzing rainbow lorikeets and potentially other
species-is of urgent concern.
"They're amazing birds,'Phalen says.'It's hard to see them as sick as they are.'
61.What are researchers trying to find ou first?
A.Why LPS is getting worse.
B.Where rainbow lorikeets usually gather.
C.How human-made chemicals led to LPS
D.What lorikeets are feeding on at present.
62.What does Wilson focus on in her study?
A.Collecting A data from specific animals.
B.Analyzing DNA in the waste of sick lorikeets.
C.Identifying DNA hidden in different plants.
D.Looking at plant, bacterial and animal DNA.

A.It increases te variety of their food sources.
B.It enlarges the range of the habntats ot these birds.

Technology seems to discourage slow, immersive reading.Reading on a screen,
particularly a phone screen, tires your eyes and makes it harder for you to keep your
place. So online writing tends to be more skimmable and list-like than print. The
cognitve neuroscientist Mary Walt argued recently that this new norm'of skim reading
is producing 'an invisible,game-changing transformation'in how readers process words.
The neuronal circuit(神经元▣路)that sustains the brain's capacity to read now favors
the rapid absorption of information, rather than skills developed by deeper reading, like
criticai analysis.
We shouldn't overplay(过度强调)this danger..All readers skim.Skimming is the
skill we acquire as children as we learn to read more skillfully. From about the age of
nine, our eyes start to bounce around the page, reading only about a quarter of the words
properly, and filling in the gaps by inference.Nor is there anything new in these fears
about declining attention spans So far.the anxieties have proved to be fatse alarms.
Ouite a few critics have been worried about attention span lately and see very short
stories as signs of cultural decline,"the American author Selvin Brown wrote. No one
ever said that poems were evidence of short attention spans.
And vet the internet has certainly changed the way we read. For a start,it means that
there is mere to read, because more people than ever are writing. If you time travelled
just a few decades into the past, you would wonder at how little writing was happening
outside a classroom. And digital writing is meant for rapid release and response. An
online article starts forming a comment string underneath.as soon as it is published. This
mode of writing and reading can be interactive and fun.But often it treats other people's
words as something to be quickly harvested as fodder()to say something else.
Everyone talks over the top of everyone else, desperate to be heard.
Perhaps we should slow down.Reading is constantly promoted as a social good and
source of personal achievement. But this advocacy often emphasizes 'enthusiastic',
passionare'or 'eager'reading, none of which adjectives suggest slow, quiet absorption.

To a slow reader,a piece of writing can only be fully understood by immersing
oneseif in the words and their slow comprehension of a line of thought. The slow reader
is-like a swimmer who stops counting the number of pool laps he has done and just
enjoys now his body feels and moves in water.
The human need for this kind of deep reading is too tenacious (for any
new technology to destroy. We often assume that technological change can't be stopped
and happens in one direction,so that older media like 'dead-tree'books are kicked out by
newer, more virtual forms. In practice, older technologies can coexist with new ones. The
Kindle has not killed off the printed book any more than the car killed off the bicycle.
We still want to enjoy slowly-formed ideas and carefully-chosen words.Even in a
fast-moving age, there is time for slow reading.
66.What is the function of Paragraph 1?
A.To introduce a prediction.
B.To expose a debate.
C.To present a phenomenon.
D.To explain a theory.
67.What is the author's attitude towards Selvin Browns opinion?
A.Favorable
.B.Critical.
C.Indifferont.D.Objective.
68.The author would probably agree that
A.advocacy of passionate reading helps promote slow readng
B.digital writing leads to too much speaking and not enough reflection
C.the public should be aware of the impact skimming has on neuronal circuits
D.the number of online readers is declining due to the advances of technology
69.How does the author explain what slow reading is?
A.By showing examples.
B.By making comparison.
By analyzing details.
D.By explaining the concept.
70.Why does the author write this article?
A.To criticize the fast-paced society destroys reading habit.
B.To show how digital technology prevents slow reading.
C.To promote reading and responding on the Internet.
D.To argue that slow reading is and will not be out of date.
