A food chain is a way to show the relationships among living things in the nature. It shows the path the energy takes from the sun through producers and consumers to decomposers. Everything needs energy to live on.
A producer is a living thing that makes energy from the sun. It absorbs sunlight, turns it into energy and keeps it. A perfect example of a producer is a vegetable or fruit. These plants take in sunlight through their green leaves, produce energy, and keep it in the other parts of the plant, such as its fruit and flowers — what is most useful to consumers.
A consumer is a living thing in the food chain that eats producers or other consumers for energy. These consumers can be insects, animals and humans. Insects, like grasshoppers (蚱蜢), eat producers and take in their energy. Consumers can also eat other consumers. For example, consumers like lions and tigers often eat other animals below them in the food chain. In this way, energy can be passed to other consumers.
A decomposer (分解者) is a living thing in the food chain that gets its energy from both consumers and producers by eating dead plants and animals. Ants and some other insects are good examples of decomposers. These living things eat dead plants and animals, take in the energy to live on and put new energy into the earth. Plants use the energy to make energy of their own to start the cycle again.
The food chain includes all living things on the earth and is difficult to understand. We can make an easy picture of the food chain by choosing just one groups of living things. Here is an example of a simple food chain.
1. Which of the following living things may be a decomposer?

2. What does the word “absorb” mean in paragraph 2?
A. 制造 B. 吸收 C. 消耗 D. 储存
3. Which of the following picture shows how the food chain works?
A. B.
C. D.
4. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Consumers are animals living on meat. B. Producers can only live on the sunlight.
C. Decomposers are dangerous to other life. D. Every living thing is important to the earth.

Have you heard the latest news? China has just entered a La Neta (拉娜尼娜) state! It’s a completely natural climate phenomenon (现象). It happens when the ocean surface in the central or eastern Pacific (near the equator) turns unusual.
What does La Nina mean for us in China? Well, it usually brings some changes to the weather. In winter, most places are likely to be colder than usual, and cold waves may come more often. Northern areas might also get more snow — great for snowball fights, but we still need to be careful! In summer, the rainfall could be uneven: more rain in the north and less in the south. Besides, coastal areas might face more typhoons than normal.
Don’t worry, though! There are some simple preparations we can do. First, keep warm in winter! Wear thick coats, scarves and gloves when you go out, and make sure the heating at home works well. Second, pay attention to the weather forecast, especially before going out to play or travel. If there’s a heavy rain or typhoon warning, just stay indoors and keep away from dangerous places like riversides. Third, if you live in southern areas that might get dry, save water in daily life. Farmers also need to prepare against drought measures for their crops.
Remember, La Nina is just a normal part of the Earth’s climate system. As long as we prepare properly, we can easily deal with its impacts and keep ourselves safe.
1. How does the passage start?
A. By listing numbers. B. By giving examples. C. By asking questions. D. By telling stories.
2. When may La Nina happen?
A. When the ocean surface in the central and eastern Atlantic turns unusually hot.
B. When the ocean surface in the central and eastern Atlantic turns unusually cold.
C. When the ocean surface in the central and western Pacific turns unusually cold.
D. When the ocean surface in the central and eastern Pacific turns unusually cold.
3. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “uneven”?
A. Not flat. B. Not balanced. C. Not heavy. D. Not smooth.
4. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. What’s La Nina? B. Let’s ready for La Nina!
C. A usual climate state. D. Serious climate changes.

There was magic in the secret garden that, spring and summer. At first everything turned green. Then the green changed to colours — blue, purple and red. There were flowers everywhere. Dickon and Mary’s seeds grew and produced poppies. And the roses — the roses! From small buds they grew into large flowers and filled the air with their perfume (香味).
Colin saw it all. He watched the changes as they happened. Dickon pushed his wheel chair to the garden every morning and he spent the day there. Sometimes he sat on the grass watching the insects. One morning he watched a mole (鼹鼠) digging a hole. He learnt a lot of things about the ways of these insects and animals. And Dickon taught him about the animals in the wood. One morning the children were in the secret garden as usual. When Ben Weatherstaff arrived, Colin said, “Good morning, Ben Weatherstaff. I want you and Dickon and Mary to listen to me because I’m going to tell you something very important.”
“Yes, sir!” answered Ben Weatherstaff.
“I’m going to do a scientific experiment (实验),” he said proudly. “When I grow up, I’m going to make scientific experiment about magic and I’m going to start with this experiment. Do you understand?”
“Yes, sir!” said Ben Weatherstaff, but he didn’t really understand.
“I believe that there is magic in everything,” added Colin. “Dickon knows some magic. He attracts animals and people. Mary also knows a bit of magic because she was born in India. There’s magic in the garden, too. I’m going to try and put some in me because I want to be well and strong. I’m going to say, ‘Magic is in me!’ And you must all say it, too. That is my experiment. Are you going to help, Ben Weatherstaff?” “Yes, sir!” said Ben Weatherstaff.
They sat down in a circle. The crow, the fox, the squirrels and the lamb were very curious. “Now let’s begin,” Colin said, and they all started chanting (吟唱). “Magic is in me. Magic is in me. Magic is in all of us.”

Can you imagine going to school on a boat? That is just what students at a Bangladeshi boat school do! Every morning, a boat travels along the river and picks them up. When all the students are on board, the boat stops at the side of the river and the class begins.
Bangladeshi boat schools aren’t just an interesting idea — they are necessary for many local children. The rainy season in Bangladesh causes heavy flooding every year. Because of high water levels, many children can’t get to school. For years, these children simply missed school during the rainy season. The boat school changed all that. It became a way for children to keep going to school during the yearly floods.
A teacher at the boat school said, “Teaching on the boat is a wonderful experience. Children don’t miss classes and fall behind. That makes it easier for them to learn.” The students are excited too. “I love my boat school,” said Dev, a 10-year-old boy. “My teachers and classmates are friendly. And the boat itself is great! It has a computer and a small library — there’s even a playground on the upper level!” His classmate Mila agreed. “I love being on the boat. It fills me with a sense of adventure!” she said.
This kind of exciting and creative school is helping Bangladeshi children learn — even in the most difficult weather.

A. Butterflies. B. Bamboos. C. Cranes. D. Ants.
