"Are you still climbing all those stairs?" The question comes after friends say, "You're looking good," considerately not adding, "for your age."
"Yup. Still tapping up and down." I do a little soft shoe dancing for emphasis. "Just like Shirley Temple and Bill Whatzisname in that musical years ago."
They shake their heads. Same old question, same old response. They've been joking with us about our hardwood stairs ever since we bought this old farmhouse 50 years ago.
There were three flights, one from the main floor bending to the second, a narrow flight to the third—floor rooms, and narrow stairs down to the basement. The stairs didn't seem a problem when we moved in. We were younger, livelier and ran up and down many times a day without concern. Though as we grew older, carrying a load of freshly washed clothes from the basement to the third floor could be tiring and we'd have to pause to catch our breath on the landings.
Our daughter brought a friend over to meet the "old folks at home" and on his very first visit he looked up at the stairs and said, "These could be dangerous. Have you ever thought about putting rubber treads on them?" We did so at the request of my daughter, but we removed them later because they were dust collectors.
Our son, home from the West Coast for a visit but really to check on his aging parents, suggested, "You might investigate one of those lifts where you sit down, press a button and rise up."
"What happens if there's a power failure?" we protested. "And our legs have weakened because of no exercise."
Some people run, some drive to the gym, and others wear watches to count their steps. But a few trips up and down stairs after breakfast get my blood flowing and the muscles working and I'm set for the day. Occasionally my back aches and I'm reduced to a snail's pace. But speed is no longer a priority.
24.Why does the author respond to her friends with a humorous and playful manner?

25.Why did the family remove the rubber treads from the stairs?
A.They collected too much dust.

D.They made the stairs harder to climb.
26.How do the stairs contribute to the author's daily life?
A.They excite cherished memories of her youth.
B.They show her resistance to modern conveniences.
C.They function as a practical alternative to daily exercise.
D.They strengthen her connection to the farmhouse's history.
27.Which of the following words might best describe the author?
A.Athletic and stubborn.
B.Sensitive and traditional.
C.Practical and economical.
D.Optimistic and independent.

In the early 1990s, in a small back room of London's Zoological Society, change was underway. An ecologist named Georgina Mace had invited a group of her workmates to cooperate on a project. Right there would emerge what the journal Nature has called "the most used and trusted source for assessing trends in global biodiversity."
Around the world, it's known by wildlife advocates simply as the Red List, a detailed list of life on Earth. Evaluated species receive one of seven color-related labels based on how endangered they are, according to data; categories range from the green "least concern" through levels of increasing threat to, finally, "extinct," symbolized by a black circle. Born in London in 1953, Mace spent much of her career at the Society's Institute of Zoology, including a period as its director for six years in the 2000s. But back in the 1980s, she focused on how to manage small populations of animals both in the wild and in captivity (圈养).
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List started in the mid-1960s. Its nomination (提名) process was then highly subjective. Beloved animals like the cheetah (猎豹) were more likely to be nominated than lesser-known species, such as the Andean catfish. In 1991, Mace coauthored a paper with*American biologist Russell Lande, calling for a reworking of the Red List based on evidence-based data. The paper would become the foundation of the modern Red List.
Revising the Red List was just one of many projects Mace advocated from the United Nations' Millennium Ecological Assessment to campaigning for more cooperation between disciplines, including the integration of economics into modern ecology. She was named a Fellow of the Royal Society, the highest honor given to British scientists, and, in 2016, a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
28.What is the primary purpose of the Red List?
A.To document the total number of species on Earth.
B.To track the migration patterns of wildlife globally.
C.To assess a species' situation based on extinction risk.
D.To promote captive programs for endangered animals.
29.What was the focus of Georgina Mace's research in the 1980s?
A.Studying the causes of species extinction.
B.Developing the Red List's classification system.
C.Advocating for global wildlife conservation policies.
D.Managing small animal populations in captivity and the wild.
30.What can be inferred about the cheetah according to paragraph 3?
A.It was endangered in the mid-1960s.
B.It was the first to be on the IUCN Red List.
C.It was lesser known than the Andean catfish.
D.It was more fortunate than the Andean catfish.
31.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.An ecologist made biodiversity count.
B.A list helped categorize newfound species.
C.An incident inspired Mace to pursue zoology.
D.A society brought wildlife advocates together.

In recent decades, experiments have begun to catch up with what people who work closely with animals have always known—that animals have an inner life, and consciousness isn't uniquely human.
Consciousness is a concept that is extremely difficult to define. There have been many attempts: is it awareness, or awareness of that awareness, or self-awareness instead? But a useful working definition might be that it is any kind of subjective experience, ranging from how we perceive the external world to our inner thoughts and emotions. Because you can never be inside another living being's head, questions of consciousness are both hard to answer and open to bias (偏见).
Findings of experiments inspired a group of scientists in April to write The New York Declaration Animal Consciousness, which now has over 300 supporters. It states that there is "strong scientific support for conscious experience" in mammals and birds and "at least a realistic possibility of conscious experience" in fish and other species.
That animals have some form of inner life must surely be self-evident to many people who live or work with them, just as I would guess that most carers of newborn babies don't see these infant as senseless automatic machines. The experiences of people with thorough knowledge of either have historically, been viewed as subjective and biased, as emotional connection tends to influence logical reasoning. Our consciousness leads us to over-empathize with others we cannot truly know, the argument goes.
But, as the biologist Marc Bekoff wrote, if we humans have something, then other animals are likely to have it too. I personally feel that attempts to divorce emotion, feeling and experience from how we see animals can be as unscientific. For too long, we assumed that humans are unique and animals don't feel pain or emotions the way that we do, a convenient but cruel null hypothesis (无效假设), when we could have started from the position that perhaps they do instead.
32.Which is a key characteristic of consciousness according to the passage?
A.It means any emotional experience of humans.
B.It refers to an individual's subjective experience.
C.It is all about how we perceive the external world.
D.It refers to a common quality shared by all animals.
33.Why are the carers of newborn babies mentioned?
A.To show that animals are just as conscious as human babies.
B.To help readers understand why animals possess consciousness.
C.To argue against the view of people living or working with animals.
D.To explain why animal carers would assume animals have an inner life.
34.What might be the author's attitude towards Marc Bekoff's assumption about animal emotions?
A.Doubtful.
B.Objective.
C.Supportive.
D.Uncertain.
35.Which can be the best title of the passage?
A.Consciousness Improved Through Practice
B.Questions of Human Consciousness Answered
C.Factors Affecting Animal Consciousness Discovered
D.Conscious Experience Found in Certain Animal Species

Encouraging kids to make handmade gifts teaches valuable lessons and adds meaning to presents. 36 Handmade gifts are thoughtful and show care, making them extra special. Working together on these projects can be fun and rewarding for both parents and children.
Handmade Gifts Express Love.
Handmade gifts are a perfect way to show you care without spending much. They reflect your creativity and can be tailored to the receiver's preferences. Even simple DIY projects with home supplies are often more meaningful than store-bought items. If time is tight, consider unique handmade goods from online stores. 37

Handmade gifts are cost-effective and eco-friendly, often made with materials you already have at home. This approach saves money and reduces environmental impact by using fewer resources. 38 These thoughtful self-made presents still provide a special memorable touch.
Teaching Life Skills.
Giving handmade gifts teaches children valuable life skills like budgeting, problem-solving, organization, and planning. By planning and creating a gift, they practice these skills in a hands-on way. 39 Instead of buying something from a store, they'll come up with creative ideas, sourcing materials or making items themselves, encouraging critical thinking about what kind of gift would be most meaningful for their loved ones.
40
Giving handmade gifts is also a wonderful way for you and your children to spend meaningful time together doing something productive and enjoyable. Taking time out of busy schedules can often be difficult, but creating thoughtful gifts together is not only fun but also teaches important values like working hard on tasks until completion, which builds determination as well as patience.

第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Visiting a museum or going on a study tour is a fast developing social trend, which has significantly increased footfalls (客流) at major, popular museums. Such has been the rush of visitors that many museums have extended 56 (they) opening hours. What's more, the visitors comprise not only history lovers, but also 57 increasing number of ordinary people. All this suggests the cultural tourism sector 58 (show) strong recovery at present, which in turn has accelerated culture-tourism integration.
However, the 59 (rapid) rising footfalls have presented new challenges for the museums, as they have to cater to the visitors' demand for special cultural services, and take measures to better facilitate academic research.
The experience of the Suzhou Museum in Jiangsu province may give readers an idea about 60 the museums should do to deal with the onrush of visitors. First, the museums should consider 61 (extend) their role beyond the traditional field of education and research, and integrate into the local tourism sector. They could, for example, conduct surveys 62 (determine) what sort of cultural services they should provide to meet the needs of the visitors. Second, the 63 (apply) of digital technology can promote reform in the cultural relic and artwork field. Third, cross-border integration of cultural and 64 (education) resources has become a new trend at a time when China is promoting long-term learning and education. And fourth, museums should develop services for elderly people too, given the fact that elderly people account 65 more than 20 percent of China's total population.

Holidays are not necessarily for fun or rest. Doing something meaningful can also gain special pleasure.
When the final bell rang, the students were reminded that there was no school on Monday—the Labor Day. "Enjoy your extra day off" said the teacher to her class.
An extra day off suited Kayla just fine. She loved breaks. She wanted to go out to play with her friends. When the school bus dropped Kayla off, she ran into the house happily.
"How was school, Kayla?" asked her mom.
"It was great, Mom. I am excited about no school on Monday."
"You just started back to school two weeks ago. Already in need of a break, huh?" asked Kayla's mom with a laugh.
Kayla slept in the next morning. Saturday was her favorite day of the week. I trained most of the day, so Kayla enjoyed playing videogames inside. On Sunday, her friends came over and they played basketball for several hours.
Then it was Labor Day, you know, the extra day off that Kayla was so looking forward to. But Kayla was awakened early that morning by her dad. He told Kayla that in honor of Labor Day, the family would be cleaning both inside and outside the house. Kayla couldn't believe it. This was a holiday. A day when she was supposed to be enjoying freshly squeezed lemonade while playing in her tree house. As Kayla wiped here yes, she began to wonder if this was just a bad dream.
"Kayla, your breakfast is ready. We have a lot of work to do today. Let's get a move on," said Kayla's mom.
As she sat down at the kitchen table, Kayla asked her parents,
"Are you serious about working today? Isn't Labor Day a holiday?"
"Yes, Kayla. It is," replied her dad. "But your mom and I thought working hard today would make you appreciate why Labor Day was observed in the first place."
